Tom Holland’s Spider-Man shatters box office with $927m opening

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has delivered one of the biggest box office debuts in cinema history, earning an impressive $927 million worldwide during its opening weekend and cementing its place as one of Marvel’s most successful launches.

The superhero blockbuster collected $355 million across the United States and Canada, making it the second-largest domestic opening weekend of all time, trailing only Avengers: Endgame, which earned $357 million during its debut in 2019, without adjusting for inflation.

International audiences also turned out in huge numbers, helping the film earn $572 million overseas. China led all international markets with $121 million in ticket sales, while Australia recorded the country’s biggest opening weekend of 2026 with $30.4 million. Combined, those figures lifted the movie’s global opening weekend total to $927 million.

The latest installment marks Tom Holland’s fourth appearance as Peter Parker, also known as Spider-Man. The story follows Parker after the events that left the world with no memory of his superhero identity. Forced to navigate life in isolation, he continues fighting crime while searching for meaningful human connections and struggling with loneliness.

Zendaya reprises her role as MJ, Parker’s greatest love, while the film explores themes of friendship, emotional resilience, and hope. The emotional storytelling has been widely praised for adding depth to the superhero spectacle and connecting with audiences beyond its action sequences.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige described the film’s opening weekend as a remarkable achievement, celebrating the overwhelming response from audiences around the world.

The success also strengthens Marvel Studios’ dominance at the global box office. The studio now holds the four biggest worldwide opening weekends in history, led by Avengers: Endgame with $1.22 billion, followed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day with $927 million, Avengers: Infinity War with $640 million, and Spider-Man: No Way Home with $600 million.

Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman and CEO Tom Rothman said the film’s emotional focus on friendship and human connection has resonated with audiences of every generation and across different cultures, contributing to its extraordinary commercial success.

Despite growing concerns in recent years about superhero fatigue, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has received an overwhelmingly positive reception. The movie currently holds a 90% critics’ score and an impressive 98% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting strong support from both reviewers and moviegoers.

Entertainment analysts believe the film’s exploration of loneliness, friendship, and overcoming personal struggles has struck a chord with Generation Z, particularly younger audiences seeking relatable emotional stories alongside blockbuster action.

The film’s blockbuster performance has also boosted an already strong summer movie season, joining successful releases such as Toy Story 5 and The Odyssey in driving audiences back to cinemas. Industry experts say the combined success of these films produced one of the biggest weekends ever for movie theaters.

Although the domestic box office has continued to recover, overall ticket sales in 2026 remain below pre-pandemic levels. However, the exceptional performance of Spider-Man: Brand New Day has provided another major boost for theaters and demonstrated that major franchise releases continue to attract massive global audiences.

At Small Heaven School in Chitwan, candles were lit and flowers placed before a portrait of the celebrated British-Nepali climber, creating an emotional tribute to a man whose remarkable achievements inspired millions around the world. The ceremony took place as rescue teams recovered the 43-year-old’s body following the avalanche that claimed the lives of ten climbers last Thursday. Fuego volcano forces evacuations in Guatemala as l…

Guatemalan authorities have ordered residents in at least two villages to evacuate after the Fuego volcano erupted, sending lava and ash shooting into the air. Fuego, regarded as one of the most active volcanoes in the Western Hemisphere, began erupting on Monday. The country’s volcanic monitoring agency reported that pyroclastic flows, fast moving currents made up of hot gas, volcanic ash and rock fragments, continued rushing down the volcano’s south eastern slope into early Tuesday. Guatemala’s disaster management agency, known as Conred, raised a nationwide orange alert, the second highest level on its warning scale, and cautioned residents to remain prepared as further eruptions could generate additional pyroclastic flows and large ash clouds. The agency advised people living nearby to keep their doors and windows shut, and officials canceled classes at schools located close to the volcano. Fuego sits roughly 16 kilometers, or about 10 miles, west of Antigua, a city that draws large numbers of tourists each year for its well preserved colonial era architecture and status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The volcano itself has also become a popular destination for hikers in recent years, drawing visitors who trek its slopes for views of the surrounding region. Conred urged both tourists and local residents to avoid approaching the volcano or lingering in areas considered at risk, particularly along its slopes, as the situation continues to develop. The eruption has revived memories of a far deadlier event in 2018, when a sudden eruption of Fuego killed more than 200 people. Many of the victims were overtaken by fast moving pyroclastic flows that swept down the Las Lajas ravine with little warning, a disaster that remains one of the deadliest volcanic events in the country’s recent history. Fuego’s frequent activity has long made it one of Central America’s most closely monitored volcanoes, with authorities maintaining routine surveillance given its proximity to populated areas and popular tourist destinations.

Anya Taylor-Joy shares unfiltered take on method a…

Anya Taylor-Joy is sparking fresh conversation about one of Hollywood’s most debated acting techniques. During a recent interview with Complex News, the acclaimed actress shared her candid thoughts on method acting, explaining why she believes many women approach the craft differently from their male counterparts. Rather than staying in character around the clock, Taylor-Joy said she prefers maintaining a healthy balance between her work and personal life.  The Queen’s Gambit and Furiosa star argued that women often have responsibilities outside of work that make it difficult to fully immerse themselves in a role 24 hours a day. “If you’ll notice, women don’t method act because we have things to take care of. We can’t completely lose our minds,” she explained during the interview. Her comments quickly gained attention online, with many fans praising her practical perspective on the demanding acting technique.  Although Taylor-Joy acknowledged that acting requires deep emotional commitment, she described it as a form of “controlled psychosis” rather than a lifestyle that should continue once filming stops. She believes actors must fully understand their characters while still remaining grounded in reality. According to the actress, maintaining that balance helps performers deliver authentic performances without allowing their roles to consume their everyday lives.  Taylor-Joy also stressed the importance of professionalism on set. She said actors have a responsibility to create a positive working environment for everyone involved in a production. Staying in character between takes, she suggested, should never come at the expense of treating fellow cast and crew members with kindness and respect. While some performers believe the technique helps them deliver unforgettable performances, others argue that it has occasionally been used to justify disruptive behavior on set. Taylor-Joy’s perspective adds another voice to the ongoing discussion about whether complete immersion is truly necessary to create compelling performances.  The actress has built a reputation for portraying emotionally complex characters in projects such as The Witch, The Queen’s Gambit, Last Night in Soho, and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Despite taking on psychologically demanding roles, she says she relies on self-awareness and support from those around her to stay emotionally healthy throughout the filmmaking process.  As Taylor-Joy prepares for future projects, including The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum and Dune: Part Three, her latest comments offer fans a revealing look into her creative philosophy. Rather than embracing extreme methods, she believes great performances come from empathy, discipline, and emotional control. Her thoughtful approach suggests that, for her, the best acting happens when talent and professionalism work hand in hand.

Acting US Attorney General rescinds $1.8 billion initiative to clear path for Senate confirmation

Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche has issued an official order rescinding the controversial $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponisation Fund”, resolving a key point of friction ahead of his confirmation vote before the Senate Judiciary Committee. The action follows extended negotiations with Republican Senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis, who had withheld support for the nomination pending written assurances that the initiative would be permanently discarded. Although Blanche previously indicated in Congressional testimony that the department would not move forward with the program, lawmakers sought a formal rescission to prevent its potential revival. The directive also clarifies terms surrounding a related legal settlement, stipulating that provisions concerning tax audit protections apply exclusively on a retroactive basis to open claims active at the time of the agreement and do not extend to future tax filings.
