BANGKOK, Thailand — Tropical Storm Maysak is bringing severe weather conditions to several regions of Thailand, prompting heavy rainfall warnings and marine advisories, even as the storm system itself remains centered over China and will not make direct landfall in the Kingdom.

Tropical Storm Kalmaegi Set to Extend Rainfall Across Thailand

According to the Thai Meteorological Department, the severe tropical storm made landfall in the Quang Ninh district of Vietnam in the early hours of the morning before moving inland into China’s Guangxi province. While the system is tracking northeastward and away from Thai borders, its residual atmospheric influence is interacting with a persistent monsoon trough across the upper North and northern Laos. This weather pattern, combined with a strong southwest monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, is expected to unleash heavy to very heavy rains across the Northern, Upper Northeastern, and Eastern regions throughout Sunday and Monday.

The deteriorating weather conditions have prompted urgent maritime warnings, particularly for the upper Andaman Sea, where thundershowers are forecast to generate dangerous waves reaching two to three meters in height or more. Authorities have strongly advised operators of small boats to remain ashore to ensure safety during this period of turbulent seas and reduced visibility.

In addition to the coastal and inland flooding risks, the persistent and intense rainfall has caused a significant and rapid surge in the Mekong River. Water levels in Nakhon Phanom province rose by 80 centimeters within a single day, reaching a depth of 4.90 meters by Sunday morning. This rapid increase has raised concerns for riverside communities and agricultural zones as the monsoon conditions continue to saturate the region.

    Two policemen injured in Peshawar IED attack

    PESHAWAR: Two police personnel sustained minor injuries after an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded near a police vehicle in Peshawar on Sunday, officials said. The blast occurred near Pir Zakorhi Bridge, close to the Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway toll plaza, where a police van was travelling on routine duty. The explosion damaged the vehicle and left the driver and a police constable with minor injuries. Rescue teams and law enforcement officials quickly reached the site and shifted the injured officers to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Authorities said both policemen were in stable condition and suffered only minor wounds. The Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) launched a search operation in the surrounding area after the explosion. Initial findings suggested that the explosive device had been planted along the roadside in a green belt and was detonated as the police vehicle passed by. Security personnel thoroughly scanned the area to ensure no additional explosive devices were present. Police cordoned off the scene and began collecting evidence to determine those responsible for the attack. An investigation has been launched, while officials are examining the nature of the explosive and the method used in the incident. The latest attack comes amid a surge in militant violence across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In recent days, several security personnel have lost their lives in separate terrorist attacks and counterterrorism operations in different parts of the province.

Another major fireworks display was organised at Liberty Chowk. Families and young people attended the event in large numbers. Hyderabad also witnessed fireworks soon after midnight. Residents came out onto the streets to celebrate the national occasion. Multan joined the celebrations with a fireworks display at Ghanta Ghar Chowk. The district administration organised the event. A large crowd gathered at the historic location. The official celebrations continued after midnight. Special prayers were offered during Fajr prayers across the country. Prayers were made for Pakistan’s development and prosperity. People also prayed for national unity and peace. Special prayers were offered for the country’s security and stability. In Lahore, the day began with a 21-gun salute. The salute was held to mark the beginning of Independence Day. A similar 21-gun salute was held at the cantonment in Quetta.     PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court has directed a citizen named Quaid-e-Azam to appear before the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) Board after his Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) was blocked. The matter came before the court after the citizen challenged the blocking of his CNIC through a petition. A division bench comprising Justice Waqar Ahmed and Justice Inamullah Khan heard the case. During the proceedings, the petitioner’s lawyer told the court that his client was a businessman. He said the citizen’s CNIC had been blocked and requested the court to intervene in the matter. The lawyer sought relief against the action taken against his client. He maintained that the blocking of the identity card had affected the citizen and required judicial consideration. A NADRA representative also appeared before the court. The Director Legal of NADRA informed the bench that the CNIC had not been blocked without reason. He said the authority had found the petitioner’s identity record suspicious. According to NADRA, the issue required further verification of the citizen’s record and identity documents. After hearing both sides, the court did not immediately order the restoration of the CNIC. Instead, the bench directed the petitioner to appear before the NADRA Board. The court’s direction means that the petitioner will have an opportunity to present his position before the relevant authority. NADRA will then examine the matter in accordance with its verification process. The case highlights the importance of accurate identity records and the procedures followed when questions arise over a citizen’s documentation. The court’s order also provides a formal channel for the petitioner to address the concerns raised by NADRA
