Two suspected criminals, identified as Fayyaz Butt and Rehan Butt, were killed in an exchange of fire with police in Sheikhupura, while a case has been registered at Muridke Police Station in connection with the incident.

According to police and details mentioned in the First Information Report (FIR), the two suspects were among armed men allegedly involved in a recent attack in Lahore in which three police personnel were martyred and three others were injured. The suspects had reportedly fled the scene following the attack and were later traced to a house in Sheikhupura.

The FIR states that a group of three armed suspects entered the residence of a citizen, identified as Abdul Hafeez, and held his family hostage at gunpoint. Abdul Hafeez’s wife and their three children were reportedly inside the house when the suspects entered and took control of the situation.

After receiving information about the presence of the suspects, police surrounded the house and launched an operation to secure the area and rescue the hostages. Police officials reportedly called upon the suspects to surrender their weapons and come out of the house peacefully.

However, instead of surrendering, the suspects allegedly opened fire on the police, resulting in an exchange of gunfire between the two sides. During the confrontation, a police vehicle was also damaged by gunfire.

According to the FIR, the exchange of fire continued for some time before the shooting eventually stopped. When police personnel entered the house and searched the premises, they found two bodies lying in the courtyard. Weapons were also recovered from the scene near the bodies.

Police have registered a case against the suspects and other alleged accomplices under several serious charges. The FIR includes provisions of the Anti-Terrorism Act along with sections relating to the possession of explosive material, murder and attempted murder.

The case has been registered at Muridke Police Station and further investigation is underway to determine the suspects’ alleged involvement in the Lahore attack and other criminal activities.

Authorities are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the hostage situation and the suspects’ presence at the residence. Police are expected to examine evidence recovered from the scene, including weapons, and determine whether other individuals were involved in the incident.

The development comes after the reported killing and injuries of six police personnel in Lahore, with authorities alleging that the suspects involved in that incident escaped and later took refuge in the Sheikhupura area.

The police operation ultimately ended with the deaths of two suspects, while the condition and whereabouts of the hostages were not detailed in the FIR information provided.

Officials said the investigation would continue to establish the complete sequence of events, identify any other people involved and determine the suspects’ connection with the earlier attack on police personnel.

The incident has also raised concerns over the use of firearms and explosives by suspected criminals and the risks faced by law enforcement personnel while responding to armed confrontations. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.

He maintained that Pakistan’s judiciary was independent and was delivering decisions on merit. The federal minister said the courts remained the legal route for obtaining relief and securing release. He noted that people had received relief through judicial decisions in the past. According to Chaudhry, the prime minister could not use executive authority to act against a court order. He said the government was bound to respect and implement judicial decisions. The minister also spoke about ongoing political contacts with the opposition. He said the opposition leaders involved in the process were not members of the PTI. However, they had the confidence of Imran Khan, according to him. Chaudhry said the government had made its position clear. The opposition leadership taking part in talks should have the confidence of the PTI leadership. He said the government did not want a situation in which it was engaged in negotiations while PTI leaders continued issuing statements against the process. The minister welcomed the PTI parliamentary party’s expression of confidence in the opposition leadership involved in the talks. He further said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was expected to respond to the opposition leader’s letter within one or two days.     KARACHI: Petrol pump dealers across Pakistan have announced an indefinite closure of fuel stations from August 15. The decision comes amid an ongoing strike by goods transporters. Talks between the government and transport representatives have failed to resolve their differences. The Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association announced the decision on Tuesday after a meeting of representatives from different parts of the country. Association Chairman Malik Khuda Baksh said dealers had given the government 72 hours to address their concerns. He warned that petrol stations would remain closed until the dealers’ demands were accepted. The dealers are mainly seeking an increase in their commission on petrol sales. They are demanding an 8% margin on petrol, saying the existing rate is no longer sufficient to cover rising operating costs. Baksh said the association represents around 14,000 dealers and that members were under growing financial pressure. He said dealers had previously postponed their strike after receiving assurances from the government that their concerns would be addressed. According to the association, the government was given additional time to resolve the issue, but the deadline passed without a satisfactory outcome. The dealers had earlier agreed to delay a planned nationwide shutdown following talks with Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik. At the time, government representatives assured the dealers that their longstanding concerns would be considered. However, the latest announcement indicates that no final agreement has been reached. He subsequently handed over charge of the assembly to the newly elected speaker. Farooq then chaired the election for the deputy speaker’s office. The PML-N nominated Ahmed Raza Qadri, while the PPP fielded Amir Abdul Ghaffar Lone. The voting pattern remained unchanged, with 46 lawmakers casting ballots. Qadri secured 32 votes against Lone’s 13, while one vote was declared invalid. Farooq administered the oath of office to the newly elected deputy speaker after the announcement of the result. The successful elections give the PML-N control of the two most important parliamentary offices in the AJK Assembly. The party emerged as the largest political force in the recent AJK elections. They said preserving the rights of its residents and safeguarding its holy sites should remain an international priority. The appeal was signed by several organisations, including the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad, the Al Quds International Institution, the Arab National Congress, the European Palestinian Conference, and the Islamic National Conference. The statement comes as tensions continue to rise across the occupied West Bank, where Israeli military raids and settler related violence have increased since the start of the Gaza conflict in October 2023. Palestinian officials say thousands of people have been injured or arrested during this period, while violence has intensified further following recent deadly clashes near Nablus involving Palestinians, Israeli settlers, and Israeli forces.
