War leaves Gaza zoo animals malnourished

GAZA/CAIRO: The war in Gaza has taken a heavy toll on animals, with shortages of food, medicine and vaccines leaving many of them weak and malnourished.

At a zoo near the Nuseirat refugee camp, visitors found animals showing clear signs of the difficult conditions. A lion remained largely inactive inside its cage, while chimpanzees sat quietly in their enclosure.

The zoo is being operated by Mahmoud Gomaa, who has worked to keep the animals alive despite the continuing crisis. He previously ran a zoo in Rafah but was forced to leave the area after Israeli military operations reached the city in 2024.

Gomaa said saving the animals became a priority for him during the war. He moved the surviving animals from one location to another before eventually settling in Nuseirat, where he reopened the zoo earlier this year.

He said he had faced enormous difficulties in finding food and providing basic care for the animals.

Before the war, Gaza had several zoos that housed wild and exotic animals. The conflict, however, has made maintaining such facilities extremely difficult.

Veterinarians say the shortage of suitable food has affected the animals’ health. Some zoo owners have been forced to feed animals frozen meat because fresh food is difficult to obtain.

The war has also caused direct losses among Gaza’s animals.

When Gomaa left Rafah, he said he had to abandon three lions, several crocodiles and African ostriches. When he later returned, he found only the bones of the crocodiles and ostriches. The lions had also disappeared.

Animal welfare experts say the impact of war extends beyond food shortages and physical injuries. Continuous explosions, aircraft noise and fighting can cause severe stress among animals.

Veterinarian Amir Khalil, who has visited Gaza with the animal welfare organisation Four Paws, said animals can detect sounds and disturbances that humans may not notice. He said the constant conflict creates fear and extreme stress for them.

Despite the harsh conditions, the zoo has become a temporary place of relief for some children.

Children visiting the facility were able to interact with parrots and smaller monkeys. For many, it offered a rare opportunity to step away from the destruction surrounding them.

Residents say children have few places left where they can play. Large parts of Gaza have been reduced to rubble, while many families continue to live in tents.

The zoo therefore serves a purpose beyond displaying animals. It provides children with a brief moment of normality amid a devastating humanitarian crisis.

Yet keeping the facility operating remains a major challenge. Limited supplies, damaged infrastructure and the continuing conflict threaten both the animals and the people caring for them.

Alleged thieves fail to steal tube well

A unique and unusual theft case has been registered in Pakistan’s Punjab province after a resident alleged that suspected thieves, who failed to steal a tube well from his agricultural land, fled the scene with his pet dog instead. According to the police, the incident took place in Kot Addu district, where the complainant reported that unknown suspects entered his farmland during the night with the apparent intention of stealing a tube well. Tube wells are commonly used in Pakistan’s agricultural sector to pump underground water for irrigation and are considered valuable equipment by farmers. The complainant stated that he became aware of the presence of the suspected thieves while they were attempting to carry out the theft. Upon realizing that intruders had entered his property, he reacted immediately by releasing his pet dog in an effort to chase and stop them. However, according to the complaint filed with the police, the dog never returned after being sent after the suspects. The owner believes that the alleged thieves took the animal with them when they fled the scene after failing to steal the tube well. The complainant expressed suspicion that the suspects, unable to accomplish their original objective, decided to take the pet dog instead. He requested the police to investigate the incident and recover the missing animal. Police officials confirmed that a formal First Information Report (FIR) has been registered based on the complainant’s statement. Investigators have launched an inquiry into the unusual case and are working to identify the individuals allegedly involved in the incident. Authorities said they are examining all available evidence and gathering information from the surrounding area to determine what exactly happened on the night of the alleged theft. At this stage, police have not confirmed whether the dog was actually stolen or wandered away during the chase. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials say further details will emerge once the inquiry is completed. The incident has attracted attention because of its unusual nature. While cases involving the theft of agricultural machinery, livestock, and farm equipment are relatively common in rural parts of Pakistan, allegations involving the theft of a pet dog after an unsuccessful attempt to steal a tube well are highly uncommon. Residents in agricultural communities often rely on watchdogs to protect their farms and livestock from theft. Such dogs are considered valuable companions and play an important role in safeguarding rural properties, especially during nighttime. Police have appealed for any information that could help locate the missing dog and identify the suspects. Officials emphasized that the investigation will continue until all aspects of the case are examined. The unusual complaint has sparked curiosity among local residents, but authorities have urged the public not to speculate about the incident while the investigation is in progress. Police say they will proceed in accordance with the law and take appropriate action if the allegations are supported by evidence.

    7.4-magnitude quake strikes Colombia

A powerful earthquake struck Colombia and several other parts of Latin America on Monday, causing injuries, damaging buildings and forcing evacuations in the capital, Bogota. The earthquake was recorded at different magnitudes by geological agencies. Colombia’s geological service measured it at 6.6, while the United States Geological Survey estimated its magnitude at 7.4. The epicentre was located in western Colombia at a depth of around 100 kilometres. Strong tremors were felt across large areas of the country. The shaking was also reported in neighbouring Ecuador and as far north as Panama. In Bogota, residents rushed out of buildings as emergency sirens sounded. Some people were seen gathering in the streets after leaving their homes and workplaces. Authorities ordered evacuations from a number of buildings as a precaution while emergency teams assessed possible structural damage. The situation was particularly serious in the western parts of Colombia. The governor of Choco province reported injuries and significant damage to buildings in Quibdo, the provincial capital. Cali, one of Colombia’s largest cities, also suffered substantial damage. Mayor Alejandro Eder said at least 20 buildings had collapsed and that people were believed to be trapped inside some of the structures. Rescue operations were launched in the affected areas. Cali authorities requested additional emergency teams from Bogota and Medellin to assist with search and rescue efforts. Images broadcast by local media showed buildings with damaged facades and sections of structures affected by the powerful tremors. Emergency authorities continued to assess the extent of the destruction as rescue teams searched damaged buildings for survivors. Officials have not yet released a complete account of casualties or property losses. The number of injured people is expected to change as assessments continue. The depth and strength of the earthquake allowed tremors to be felt across a wide area, including outside Colombia. Authorities urged residents to remain cautious and follow instructions from emergency services, particularly in buildings that may have suffered structural damage. The earthquake comes as parts of northern South America remain vulnerable to major seismic activity. In June, two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela, with reported magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, causing widespread destruction and thousands of deaths.

Iqra Aziz and Fawad Khan’s film pairing sparks mixed reactions

Pakistani actors Iqra Aziz and Fawad Khan are set to share the screen in an upcoming feature film, marking one of the most talked-about new collaborations in the entertainment industry. While many fans are excited to see two of the country’s biggest stars working together, the announcement has also triggered mixed reactions across social media. Iqra Aziz has built a successful career with memorable performances in popular television dramas, earning praise for her versatility and natural acting style. Over the years, she has delivered several hit projects that established her as one of Pakistan’s leading actresses. Fawad Khan, meanwhile, remains one of the industry’s most celebrated stars, admired for his performances in iconic television dramas as well as his work in films at home and abroad. The actors are expected to appear together in a feature film backed by the Sindh government. The project will reportedly be produced by Maida Azmat and directed by Murtaza Chaudhry. Although details about the storyline and the characters have not yet been officially revealed, the casting announcement has generated considerable interest among fans. In addition to the film, both Iqra Aziz and Fawad Khan are also part of the upcoming Netflix original series Jo Bachay Hain Sang Samait Lo, which has already attracted attention for bringing together several well-known Pakistani actors in a global production. Soon after news of their film collaboration surfaced, social media platforms were flooded with reactions. While many users welcomed the fresh pairing and expressed curiosity about seeing the two actors together, others questioned whether they would look convincing as an on-screen couple. A large number of comments focused on the age difference between the actors. Some users felt that the gap could affect their on-screen chemistry, with a few suggesting they might appear more like family members than romantic leads. Others argued that casting should prioritize visual compatibility alongside acting talent. Some social media users also commented on Iqra Aziz’s petite appearance, claiming that she might not complement Fawad Khan’s screen presence in a romantic role. However, many fans defended the actress, pointing out that her acting abilities should be the primary factor in judging the project rather than physical appearance or height. Several viewers also proposed alternative actresses whom they believed would have suited the role alongside Fawad Khan. Names such as Maya Ali and Saba Qamar were frequently mentioned in online discussions, with fans sharing different opinions about possible casting choices. Despite the criticism, many entertainment fans urged others to wait until the film’s trailer or official promotional material is released before forming conclusions. They argued that successful on-screen chemistry depends on performances, direction, and storytelling rather than assumptions based on photographs or casting announcements alone. As anticipation continues to grow, audiences are now waiting for more details about the film, including its title, storyline, release schedule, and the roles that Iqra Aziz and Fawad Khan will portray. Whether the pairing wins over skeptics or continues to divide opinion, the project has already become one of the most discussed upcoming releases in Pakistan’s entertainment industry.

PayPal’s coupon extension loses millions of users amid scandal

PayPal-owned coupon extension Honey is facing a sharp decline in its user base. The drop comes amid mounting criticism and legal action from online creators. According to reports, the browser extension has lost millions of users as accusations of affiliate misconduct continue to draw scrutiny. PayPal acquired Honey back in 2020 for $4 billion, and the tool has faced repeated controversy in the years since. Data from MegaLag shows Honey’s user base has dropped by more than seven million. The extension has fallen from roughly 20 million users on the Chrome Web Store down to about 13 million. In a significant legal development, US District Judge Beth Labson Freeman allowed a second amended complaint from content creators to move forward. The ruling marks another setback for PayPal as it continues defending the extension in court. Alongside the drop in users, Honey’s coupon database has also shrunk considerably. Its collection of active codes has fallen from 90,000 to around 50,000, with roughly 10,000 of the remaining codes reportedly already expired. In response to the broader controversy, Google has updated its Chrome Web Store policies to curb similar link-manipulation practices. The updated rules now require clearer transparency around how extensions monetise user activity. Separately, Rakuten Advertising has rolled out a new system aimed at preventing extensions from claiming last-click credit on purchases. The move is seen as a direct response to the kind of practices Honey has been accused of. Honey had built its reputation by promising users automatic savings, claiming it could scan the internet to find the best available coupon codes for any purchase. That promise, heavily promoted through YouTube sponsorships, helped the extension attract millions of downloads over the years. However, growing legal pressure and declining trust appear to be reshaping how both users and industry regulators view coupon-finding tools going forward. With lawsuits ongoing and user numbers continuing to slide, Honey’s reputation looks set to remain under scrutiny in the months ahead.

    Pakistan clarifies Afghan deportation policy

Pakistan has clarified that Afghan citizens with valid visas and travel documents have not been expelled from the country. Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi said the government was following a legal process regarding Afghan nationals staying in Pakistan. Addressing the weekly press briefing, Andrabi said cases of around 89,000 Afghan citizens were currently being reviewed under the Illegal Foreigners Repatriation Plan (IFRP). He explained that the process was being carried out according to established procedures and legal requirements. The spokesperson added that Pakistan was also providing humanitarian relief by extending the stay of nearly 16,000 Afghan nationals. The extension applies mainly to vulnerable groups, including women, children and elderly citizens, he said. Commenting on reports of an incident near the Chitral border areas, Andrabi said the Foreign Office had no confirmed information about the matter. He stated that reports coming from Afghanistan needed proper verification at the ground level before any official response could be given. The spokesperson stressed that Pakistan would avoid commenting on unverified reports and would share information only after confirmation from reliable sources.
