Why young minds internalize being a burden

When a child begins to internalize the belief that their presence is an obstacle, the transformation rarely happens in an explosive moment. Instead, it is a gradual, quiet erosion of their sense of self-worth. Recent reports surrounding youth mental health have drawn urgent attention to how children absorb socio-economic pressure, domestic tension, and emotional distress. The youth has convinced themselves that their families would simply be better off without them.

Psychological research identifies a specific mindset known as perceived burdensomeness. It’s the distorted cognitive belief that one’s existence imposes an unmanageable drain on loved ones.  Adults often process household stress out loud through financial worries or fatigue. However, children are acute observers but poor interpreters of these adult struggles.

When young minds witness prolonged arguments over money, household strain, or family burnout, they frequently externalize the blame onto themselves. Rather than recognizing systemic or situational issues, a child’s natural self-referential worldview leads to a heartbreaking conclusion.

If I weren’t here, my parents wouldn’t be so stressed.

Triggers for Emotional Withdrawal in Children

  •  Hearing constant worry over basic living costs or healthcare expenses.
  • Feeling as though love or acceptance is tied strictly to high achievement or complete emotional compliance.
  • When overwhelmed caregivers unintentionally treat basic parenting duties as exhausting chores.
  • Receiving persistent feedback that their emotional or physical needs are too much to handle.

How Burden Beliefs Manifest in Everyday Behavior

Unlike adults, who might voice feelings of worthlessness directly, children express this weight through shifts in conduct. Identifying these subtle indicators early can make the difference between early intervention and severe psychological crisis.

From Obligation to Belonging

Addressing this internal crisis requires shifting household culture from transactional survival to unconditional emotional safety. Child mental health advocates emphasize that reassurance must go beyond simple verbal praise. It requires active, structural validation within the home.

A child needs to know that their value isn’t dependent on their convenience to adults. Love is not a debt they owe back to the family, but a foundation they stand upon.

Explicitly reassure children that adult challenges such as bills, jobs, or adult relationships are strictly the responsibility of grown-ups. Validate their requests for help, space, or care as healthy and welcome parts of growing up. Spend unhurried, non-evaluative time together where no performance or chore is expected.

Rebuilding a child’s foundational sense of belonging takes consistency, but by recognizing the early signals of perceived burdensomeness, parents and educators can intervene before silence turns into deep-seated trauma.

    The return of physical books in a digital world

    ​When e-readers and digital publishing exploded in the late 2000s, tech prognosticators predicted the rapid demise of the printed book. Paper was deemed inefficient, heavy, and outdated. An analog relic doomed to follow the cassette tape and the encyclopedia into obscurity. Yet, decades into the digital revolution, the physical book has successfully survived. It is thriving, driven by a growing cultural hunger for tactile experiences in an increasingly virtual world.   ​The persistence of print comes down to a fundamental human reality. Sensory experience matters. A digital screen, no matter how crisp its resolution, flattens every piece of content into the same glass surface. A tweet, a work email, a news alert, and a classic novel all look and feel virtually identical. In contrast, a physical book offers a distinct multi-sensory landscape. The weight of the volume in your hands. The subtle texture of the paper stock. The faint scent of ink and binding glue. Above all, the visual progress of physical pages moving from right to left. Reading a physical book creates an immersive environment that screens simply cannot replicate. British writer Roald Dahl who is known for such classic children’s books as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964) and Matilda (1988). His other notable works include James and the Giant Peach (1961), The BFG (1982), and The Witches (1983). He famously said, So please, oh please, we beg, we pray, go throw your TV set away, and in its place you can install a lovely bookshelf on the wall. Modern digital life is characterized by fragmented attention and constant micro-interruptions. Reading a book on a tablet or smartphone means constantly resisting the urge to check email, glance at social media, or reply to a text message. A physical book possesses no hyperlinks, no pop-ups and no algorithmic distraction loops by default. It demands a single-tasking mindset and offers a meditative refuge from digital fatigue.   ​There is also a social and aesthetic dimension to the print resurgence. Bookshelves in a home are not just storage units. Rather, they are visual representations of identity, curiosity, and intellectual history. Browsing a physical bookstore or sharing a physical copy with a friend fosters spontaneous community connections that digital files cannot mirror.   e-books certainly offer undeniable convenience for travel and instant access. However, they have become a supplement to print rather than a replacement. Readers are making a conscious choice to slow down. The deliberately disconnect from screens, and hold stories in their hands. The physical book stands high not for some reason of nostalgia. Rather, it fulfills a psychological need that technology has only managed to heighten.

Classic items such as button down shirts, straight cut jeans simple suits and smart shoes can remain stylish for many years. Small details matter Simple details can make an outfit look much more polished. Match your belt with your shoes choose suitable socks and select a tie that works well with your shirt collar. These small choices can take your overall look to the next level. Never ignore your shoes A great outfit can lose its appeal if you wear dirty or unsuitable shoes. Treat your footwear as an important part of your outfit rather than an afterthought. Try different colors and patterns Men’s fashion does not have to be limited to black white, grey and blue.  Try different colors and patterns that suit your skin tone and personality. The key is balance. Avoid wearing too many bold pieces at the same time. Consider your body shape skin tone and personal preferences when choosing clothes. The best style is one that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Get ideas from social media Platforms such as Instagram can provide plenty of fashion inspiration.  However you do not need to copy someone else’s entire look. Take ideas from different styles and create a look that feels personal and unique to you. Confidence completes the look The most important style rule is to feel comfortable and confident in what you wear. You do not have to follow every popular trend.

  • The hallucination trap – information convincing but factually incorrect

    By Syeda Samar Zahra Zaidi When you ask an AI chatbot a question it does not know the answer to, an odd thing can happen: instead of hesitating or saying, “I am not sure!” it confidently delivers a tidy, well-structured, completely fabricated response—often with fake citations, fictional figures, and an authoritative tone. This phenomenon is known as the ‘hallucination trap ’, and it may be the most significant barrier between trust and artificial intelligence. I was introduced to the term “AI hallucination” for the first time in the workshop under the project titled “Digital Trust and Free Expression in the AI Era” at Department of Media and Development Communication, University of the Punjab, supported by the U.S. Mission to Pakistan in partnership with the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN). I learned that a “hallucination” occurs when a language model produces information that sounds convincing but is factually incorrect or completely made up. Examples include inventing a legal case that never existed, citing a research paper that doesn’t exist or boldly misrepresenting a historical date. What is disturbing is not merely that AI can be wrong-humans make mistake too- but rather the way it presents that incorrect information with clearly, confidence and without a trace of doubt. Large language models are essentially highly complex pattern predictors trained to produce the most likely next word in a sequence. As a result, when a model has encountered a topic thousands of times in its training data, the predictors are typically accurate. However, when it comes across a gap, an unidentified fact or a question at the outer edge of its knowledge, it doesn’t shift into a hesitant mode. Instead, it continues doing exactly what it was trained to do: generate a logical, fluent piece of writing, producing a response that is structurally sound and grammatically correct but based on nothing. In human communication, confidence is generally perceived as a sign of strength which is important. We naturally prefer to trust a calm, reliable voice over a hesitant one. AI systems unintentionally exploit the tendency because their language remains confident whether they are right or wrong. The risks increase with the use of AI, as students may unintentionally include false information into their work and journalists have published articles citing artificially created sources and quotes, negatively affecting the credibility of their publications. Such inaccuracies influence what millions of people see, believe or share, thereby amplifying fabricated content. The reason AI does not simply say “I don’t know” is partly due to the way these systems are trained. Many models are designed to provide helpful, comprehensive-sounding answers and are rarely rewarded for expressing doubt during training. This means that a model that frequently acknowledges uncertainty may be judged as less helpful than one that consistently provides an answer, even when that confidence is occasionally misplaced. Such incorrectly aligned incentives arise when the training process gradually teaches the model that sounding confident is more valuable than being accuracy. Retrieval-augmented generation, which relies on responses in actual, verifiable records rather than internal memory alone, improved training techniques that explicitly account for uncertainty; and systems built to simply cite sources. So, users can independently verify claims are just a few of the ways developers are using to addresses this problem. While none of these solutions fully eliminate hallucination yet, taken together they represent a major shift from blind confidence toward earned trust. The most dangerous outcome is not an AI that makes mistakes but a culture of users who stop questioning because the system always sounds so sure of itself.   Therefore, until AI becomes more reliably aware of it own limitation, part of the responsibility falls on the people who use it: treating AI-generated output as a starting point rather than an endpoint, cross checking important facts against credible sources. In the end, the hallucination trap serves as a reminder that illusion is not the same as truth. As AI becomes increasingly common in education, digital media and everyday life, understanding why it occasionally lies with confidence is not only a technical curiosity but also a fundamental aspect of digital literacy. We must strengthen our ability to verify the information provided by AI as they become more persuasive.   • Science explains why ancient Egyptians worshipped the baboon

    In the vast pantheon of ancient Egypt, deities were frequently portrayed as living creatures. Anubis assumed the form of a sleek jackal, Hathor appeared as a majestic cow, and Horus was depicted as a fierce falcon. In almost every instance, a single animal species was tied to a single divine figure. However, the deity Thoth who’s the ancient Egyptian god of wisdom, writing, magic, and the moon stood out. Ancient artists and priests portrayed Thoth in two completely different animal forms. First, the slender, wading sacred ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus). Second, the stocky, silver-furred sacred baboon (Papio hamadryas). For centuries, Egyptologists and anthropologists struggled to explain why two such different animals were chosen to represent the exact same lunar god.  The sacred ibis seemed to make intuitive sense. Its curved, arching beak resembles a delicate crescent moon. Its black-and-white plumage aligns with classical lunar motifs. The sacred baboon remained an enigma. Baboons were not even native to the Nile Valley. Egyptians had to import them from regions thousands of miles to the south at immense expense and difficulty. Furthermore, across most neighboring African cultures, baboons were viewed with hostility as agricultural pests that destroyed crops. A groundbreaking study published in the journal Time and Mind by a team of researchers from the University of St Andrews and Dartmouth College has finally understood the case. The researchers caught a glimpse into the psychological and spiritual world of ancient Egypt. Professor Catherine Hobaiter at the University of St Andrews led the research team sought to move past human visual perception. Human color judgment is naturally subjective and heavily influenced by cultural assumptions. To eliminate this bias, the scientists utilized spectroscopy. It’s a technique that measures the precise light wave frequencies reflected off physical surfaces. Using spectroscopic measurements, the researchers analyzed the physical light signatures emitted by the plumage of the sacred ibis and the thick coat of the sacred hamadryas baboon. Then, compared those measurements to the light wave frequencies given off by actual moonlight. The findings were astonishingly clear. Both the silver-white fur of the hamadryas baboon and the bright feathers of the sacred ibis possess spectral profiles that are practically identical to the reflected light of the moon. This discovery reveals that the ancient Egyptians were intentional in their religious symbolism. Ancient Egyptians had access to multiple bird and primate species. They were well-acquainted with at least three distinct types of ibises and several other monkey species, including green vervet monkeys and patas monkeys. Yet, out of all available animals, they specifically selected the single white ibis species and the single silver-furred baboon species. The new research demonstrates that the ancient Egyptians recognized an inherent physical connection between these animals and the night sky. To the Egyptian mind, divinity was not an abstract concept restricted to invisible realms. In fact, it was tangibly embodied in the natural environment. When an ancient observer looked upon a hamadryas baboon sitting under the night sky, its coat reflected the exact spectral radiance of the full moon shining overhead. Physical artifacts, temple walls, and mummified remains have revealed much about what ancient Egyptians built and worshipped. However, opportunities to understand how they perceived the world around them are exceptionally rare. Scientists have provided a rare window into ancient human consciousness. Science proved that to the people of the Nile, a baboon’s silver coat was quite literally the embodiment of heavenly light on Earth.

    China introduces brain-controlled robot technology

    Several countries are actively developing Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology which enables people to interact with devices using only their thoughts without the need for physical movement. Now, a Chinese company is working to integrate this technology into robots. According to BrainCo, the company has developed the world’s first brain-to-robot interface system allowing robots to be controlled directly through human thought. The company said the system works using EEG headsets which are worn by human operators. These headsets monitor brain activity and translate it into commands that are sent to the robot. Like other BCI technologies, the system relies on extensive training data that maps specific patterns of brain activity to corresponding actions. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms are then used to accurately interpret a person’s intended action and convert it into the correct robotic response. The technology called the Brain-Controlled Robot AI Platform was unveiled at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai. BrainCo said the system can be used not only to control robots but also to operate robotic arms and other connected devices. The platform continuously collects data which is used to further improve its AI algorithms and enhance performance over time. According to the company, rapid advances in AI have enabled robots to perform many tasks independently. However, it believes the next major challenge is ensuring that robots can effectively understand and collaborate with the humans working alongside them.
