Xabi Alonso backs Morgan Rogers to boost Chelsea attack

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso believes new signing Morgan Rogers has the quality to make the team more competitive and expects the England international to build a strong partnership with Cole Palmer.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s pre-season friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers, Alonso praised the club’s latest acquisition, describing Rogers as an important addition who strengthens the squad ahead of the new campaign.

The 23-year-old midfielder completed a blockbuster move from Aston Villa last week in a deal worth £117 million, making him the most expensive British player in football history. Chelsea secured his signature after a long pursuit, with the club reportedly tracking the talented playmaker for the past two years.

Alonso expressed his delight over the transfer, saying Rogers was exactly the type of player Chelsea needed.

“It’s a great signing. We needed an important player in that position, and there were very few better options than Morgan. We are delighted to have him with us,” Alonso said.

Chelsea are looking to bounce back after a disappointing Premier League season in which they finished 10th and failed to qualify for European competition. The arrival of Alonso as manager signals the start of a new era at Stamford Bridge, with the former midfielder aiming to rebuild the club into title contenders.

Rogers joins an attacking group that already includes Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Estevao, Willian and fellow summer signing Geovany Quenda. Despite having several creative players available, Alonso is confident he has a clear tactical plan to get the best out of his squad.

The Spanish coach believes Rogers and Palmer can form a highly effective partnership because of their technical ability and understanding of the game.

“I have an idea of how they can play together. They can link really well. It’s about creating the right balance between players who provide stability and those who have the freedom to express themselves,” Alonso explained.

He added that if Chelsea manage to position their attacking players effectively, the team will become stronger both in possession and when defending.

Alonso also highlighted Rogers’ versatility as one of his greatest strengths. Throughout his career, the England international has demonstrated the ability to operate in several attacking roles, giving Chelsea greater flexibility in different tactical setups.

According to Alonso, Rogers is capable of playing behind the striker, on either wing, or in advanced midfield positions. However, he believes the player is most effective when attacking from the left side while drifting into central areas.

“We want him to play where he enjoys his football the most and where he feels comfortable. If we build good relationships between our attacking players and they understand each other’s movements, it will improve the overall quality of our game,” Alonso said.

Rogers is not part of Chelsea’s pre-season tour of Australia after representing England at the FIFA Club World Cup, where the national side finished third. The coaching staff are expected to integrate him into the squad once he returns from international duty.

Chelsea begin their pre-season preparations with matches against Western Sydney Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur before travelling to Hong Kong, where they will face Juventus as they continue building fitness and tactical cohesion ahead of the new season.

Haris Khokhar denies Dr Nabiha Ali Khan’s allegations

Haris Khokhar has publicly broken his silence to firmly refute the allegations made by his estranged wife, social media personality and medical professional Dr. Nabiha Ali Khan, labeling her claims as entirely baseless and deeply damaging to his family’s reputation. The high-profile rift between the couple—whose viral wedding celebrations previously captivated Pakistani social media—escalated into a public controversy after Dr. Nabiha appeared on a live television show. During the broadcast, she broke down in tears while accusing Khokhar and his family of subjecting her to severe mental stress, alleging domestic interference from her mother-in-law and sister-in-law that ultimately led to their separation. Responding through an exclusive interview and subsequent online statements, Khokhar offered his side of the story, categorically denying any mistreatment or domestic misconduct. He expressed deep dismay over having his private domestic matters aired on national television, asserting that he never abandoned his wife as claimed. Instead, Khokhar maintained that Dr. Nabiha chose to leave their marital home voluntarily after failing to adapt to married life and the household dynamics. Defending his family against what he described as targeted character assassination, Khokhar pointed out that his sister is happily married with children and that his parents had consistently welcomed Dr. Nabiha into their home. He rejected accusations that his family caused friction in the marriage, emphasizing that the disputes stemmed from personal incompatibilities and unrealistic expectations rather than systematic abuse. ”I will not engage in a toxic public blame game, but dragging my mother and family onto live broadcasts with false allegations is completely unacceptable. I never abandoned my wife; she chose to walk away. She needs to acknowledge the reality of our personal differences instead of maligning my parents on social media for content and sympathy.” Khokhar further revealed that he has initiated formal legal notices regarding the dissolution of their marriage, stating that reconciliation is no longer a viable option following the public defamation his family endured. Addressing the media circus surrounding their split, he urged content creators, digital news portals, and netizens to stop sensationalizing their personal tragedy for online views and engagement. As formal legal proceedings move forward, Khokhar reiterated his call for privacy, urging both sides to handle the final resolution through legal courts rather than continuing trials on digital platforms.

PSX opens higher as KSE-100 index gains over 500 points

KARACHI: Buying activity dominated trading at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Thursday, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index rising more than 500 points during the early session. At around 9:45am, the benchmark index was trading at 180,864.26 points, recording an increase of 553.05 points, or 0.31%, from the previous close. The positive trend reflected renewed investor interest in several major sectors. Strong activity was witnessed in cement, commercial banking, fertiliser, oil marketing companies (OMCs) and power generation stocks. Several index-heavy companies also contributed to the upward movement. HUBCO, Fauji Fertilizer Company (FFC), MCB Bank, National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) and United Bank Limited (UBL) were among the stocks trading in positive territory during the early hours. The latest gains come after the stock market staged a recovery in the previous session. On Wednesday, the PSX rebounded as investors returned to buying after two consecutive sessions of profit-taking. Market sentiment also improved toward the end of Wednesday’s trading session following reports regarding an extension of the US-Iran ceasefire, which helped ease some concerns among investors about geopolitical developments and their potential impact on regional markets. The KSE-100 Index ultimately closed Wednesday’s session at 180,311.22 points. Global markets provide positive cues The positive momentum at the domestic bourse was also supported by a broadly upbeat trend in Asian equity markets. Asian stocks advanced on Thursday after fresh US inflation data broadly matched market expectations. The figures reduced some expectations of an immediate tightening move by the US Federal Reserve and provided support to investor sentiment. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.97%, while South Korea’s benchmark market climbed sharply, gaining 4.4%. Japan’s Nikkei index also advanced 1.86%. US stock futures remained relatively stable, with S&P 500 E-mini futures up 0.02% during the Asian trading session. US inflation remains in focus According to data released on Wednesday, US consumer prices increased by 0.1% in July, broadly matching economists’ expectations. The modest increase in consumer prices has lowered expectations of an immediate interest-rate hike by the Federal Reserve. Market participants are closely monitoring inflation figures as they assess the central bank’s next policy move. According to CME Group’s FedWatch tool, financial markets were pricing in around a 40% probability of a rate hike next month, down from approximately 54% a week earlier. Oil prices remain near $80 Meanwhile, international oil prices remained close to the $80-per-barrel level, as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran remained unresolved. Developments in oil prices remain important for Pakistan’s economy and financial markets because changes in global crude prices can influence the country’s import bill, inflation outlook, exchange-rate pressures and corporate earnings. Investors at the PSX are expected to closely monitor both domestic economic developments and international market cues as trading progresses on Thursday.
