“My Dad had a ‘61 in this color and with roof rack. VW advertised they would float. I was 15 and a friend and I tried to drive it in a local reservoir that was just being impounded. It did float but wouldn’t steer and bogged down due to back pressure. Crawled out window and pushed it back to shore. Cranked it watching pea shooters squirt water. It cranked up. We drove it until the floorboards were dry. Did not tell Dad until 10 years later. He couldn’t kill me then, I had kids of my own”

“Styling of this era Accord still looks fresh to my eyes. If it ends up on display at a Honda dealer showroom, will it make customers think, “God, new cars sure are ugly now.” But then again, I may be biased. My daily drivers are 35-year old Hondas.”

In fact there is an online forum dedicated specifically to the Honda Ridgeline (https://www.ridgelineownersclub.com/).
My personal belief is that they are so robust and long lived because they utilize proven engines, transmissions (mostly), AWD design, and even body engineering.
They’re not mechanically high strung, cutting edge, uber fashionable vehicles.
You’re getting solid engineering and time-proven design.
Just the kind of vehicle you can picture…”

“Somewhat related, gearhead Nick Mason (Pink Floyd) took part in a documentary “La Carrera Panamericana” in the early 1990s, which is just awesome. Wonderful cinematography of the actual race, with Pink Floyd as the soundtrack.
I stumbled upon the VHS in a bargain bin in the mid-’90s, but it’s all over YouTube now.

“@volvoracer9 – That is an excellent question. The guy who created this went to great lengths to make it accurate. As far as I have found, everything is correct except the brakes/wheels/hubs. A true MC850 will have 4 bolt wheels and hubs with a different front brake caliper. I put on adjustable Spax shocks but the original Koni shocks come with it. “My father was in the Army from 1939 until 1969 when he retired as a Colonel. He was active duty thru WWII and then in the reserve until he retired. He drove a split window VW like this to his reserve meetings and drills. I once asked him why the VW? He said it was reliable and got great gas mileage. Having been raised during the depression he was very frugal. This auction brings many fond memories. GLWTA.”
