5 terrorists killed in Panjgur operation

Security forces have killed five suspected terrorists, including a key commander of Fitna al-Hindustan, during an intelligence-based operation in Balochistan’s Panjgur district, according to security sources.

The operation took place in the Sarkini and Chhedgi areas of Panjgur under Operation Radd-ul-Fitna 3. Security forces conducted the raid after receiving intelligence about the presence of armed militants in the area.

According to the sources, the operation resulted in the death of Fitna al-Hindustan commander Wazir, son of Jamal, along with four other militants. The security forces also recovered four motorcycles, machine guns, other heavy weapons and a large quantity of ammunition from the militants’ possession.

Security sources said the militants had allegedly been involved in a range of criminal and terrorist activities, including extortion, kidnapping, robbery and attacks against traders and local residents. Their activities had created fear and insecurity among people in the area.

Following the successful operation, security forces have launched a clearance operation in the surrounding areas to locate and eliminate other members of the militant network. Officials said the security operation would continue until the area was fully cleared of remaining threats.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi praised the security forces for their successful intelligence-based operation in Panjgur and commended their professional capabilities.

Naqvi said the country’s security personnel remained a source of pride for the nation and were working to eliminate terrorism from Balochistan. He said the entire nation stood united against terrorism and supported the security forces in their efforts to restore peace and stability.

The latest operation comes as security forces continue intelligence-led actions against militant groups across Balochistan as part of broader counterterrorism efforts.

    Pakistan’s National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has registered a case against Nooreen Niazi, the sister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan under various sections of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) and the Pakistan Penal Code. The FIR alleges that Nooreen Niazi made “false and baseless accusations” against the state of Pakistan and its institutions including the armed forces, during a podcast interview and attempted to undermine public trust in state institutions. A few days earlier, a clip from Nooreen Niazi’s interview went viral on social media in which she allegedly discussed the Pakistani military, “Battle of Haq,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Donald Trump and the Abraham Accords. After the clip went viral, the NCCIA issued a notice summoning Nooreen Niazi. According to the FIR, the controversial interview was shared from various accounts on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and later went viral. The case alleges that Nooreen Niazi attempted to deny the achievements of the Pakistan Army during the Pakistan-India conflict in May 2025 while also allegedly spreading a false narrative to create hatred, fear and distrust against state institutions among the public. The FIR further states that her statements were allegedly aimed at deliberately damaging the reputation of state and defence institutions. According to the NCCIA, Nooreen Niazi was issued multiple notices directing her to record her statement and join the investigation. However, a case was registered against her based on initial evidence. The agency said that the involvement of other possible individuals would be determined during the investigation. The case against Nooreen Niazi has been registered under Sections 20 and 26A of PECA 2016 along with Sections 505 and 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code. PTI and Nooreen Niazi’s response Neither Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf nor Nooreen Niazi has issued an official response regarding the case so far. However, in a video shared by PTI’s official X account, Nooreen Niazi can be heard saying in response to a journalist’s question that she was unaware of the matter. She further said: “I have never done anything in my life that would result in an FIR being registered against me.” Earlier, on Saturday (18 July), the NCCIA had issued a notice to Nooreen Niazi over allegations of spreading “false, defamatory and provocative content” on social media and allegedly damaging state institutions. The Cyber Crime Reporting Centre of the NCCIA had directed Nooreen Niazi to appear on 20 July at 12 noon and provide an explanation regarding the controversial statement. Federal Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry condemned Nooreen Niazi’s statements, accused PTI leadership of promoting an anti-state narrative and said that legal action had been initiated. What was mentioned in NCCIA notice? The Cyber Crime Reporting Centre of the NCCIA, Islamabad issued a summons notice to Nooreen Niazi on 18 July 2026. According to the notice, she was called to appear at the NCCIA office in Islamabad on 20 July 2026 at 12 noon. The notice stated that an inquiry was being conducted into allegations of spreading “false, provocative and defamatory content” on social media and promoting a negative narrative against state institutions. The agency instructed Nooreen Khan Niazi to appear on the given date so that her statement could be recorded. It also warned that legal action could be taken under relevant sections of the Pakistan Penal Code if she failed to appear. Government’s position State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry condemned Nooreen Niazi’s remarks and alleged that Imran Khan’s sister had repeated statements similar to those previously made by members of his family. He claimed that their politics and actions give the impression that their aim is to harm Pakistan. He further said that after the recent interview, “there is no room left to deny that the PTI founder is a proxy of foreign powers.” He repeated allegations regarding foreign funding, Imran Khan’s personal life, the upbringing of his children and claims related to his former wife’s family, alleging that he had received support, funding and lobbying from foreign circles. Talal Chaudhry said: “This is no longer a hidden matter. Their target is not only the army or Pakistan’s institutions; their target is Pakistan itself.” He added that legal proceedings against Nooreen Niazi had been started and that she was issued a notice to present her viewpoint. Journalist’s explanation: “The editorial team decided not to upload interview” Journalist Ehtishamullah Behlam who conducted the interview told BBC Urdu that the interview was recorded on 15 May, when one year had passed since the May 2025 Pakistan-India clashes. He said that Nooreen Khan was asked questions in this context and gave her response. According to Ehtishamullah, the interview was recorded for a YouTube channel. He explained that after listening to Nooreen Khan’s remarks, he and the channel owner decided not to upload the interview. He said that only two short portions of the interview were separated and sent to the editorial team not for publishing but for consultation. According to him, one of those clips was the same one that later went viral. However, he did not explain how the video was uploaded on social media.

    President delays assent for 19 high court judges

    The appointment of 19 additional judges to four high courts remains pending as President Asif Ali Zardari has yet to approve the summary. The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) approved the nominations during meetings held on July 20 and 21. The proposed appointments involve the Lahore High Court, Sindh High Court, Balochistan High Court and Islamabad High Court. Nine days have passed since the JCP approved the nominations. However, the president has not yet given his assent to the summary. The delay has caused concern within the government. A senior cabinet member questioned why the approval had not yet been granted. The official argued that the summary was initiated by the JCP rather than the prime minister. Therefore, according to the government’s position, the president could not send it back to the prime minister for reconsideration. The official also warned that continued inaction could create further tension within the superior judiciary. The government’s legal team is reportedly examining possible options to address the issue. The matter has also exposed differences between the government and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). According to government officials, the PPP leadership is unhappy with the JCP because some of its preferred nominees were not considered for judicial appointments. The PPP had shown particular interest in securing the appointment of two candidates to the Sindh High Court. However, neither the judicial nor executive members of the JCP supported their nominations. Officials said the candidates were below the age of 45. Both government and judicial representatives reportedly agreed that nominees below that age should not be approved. PPP Senator Farooq H Naek, a senior legal figure and member of the JCP, had proposed 33 candidates for the four high courts. His proposed list included 16 candidates for the Sindh High Court, 10 for the Lahore High Court, five for the Balochistan High Court and two for the Islamabad High Court. A member of the commission said the PPP could potentially have secured appointments for other candidates from interior Sindh. Some of those candidates were considered sympathetic to the party. However, the commission member claimed that the party’s insistence on its two preferred nominees affected the outcome. The dispute comes amid wider political and judicial developments involving Sindh. JCP judicial members have already reached a consensus on the performance of constitutional benches in the Sindh High Court. The judges serving on those benches were given three months to demonstrate their performance. The commission’s judicial members also opposed the confirmation of Sindh High Court Additional Judge Syed Fiaz ul Hassan Shah. The development was viewed by some political circles as another setback for the PPP. The party has historically sought influence over judicial appointments in Sindh and other provinces. Last year, the PPP was able to influence appointments in several high courts, including the Sindh High Court, Peshawar High Court and Lahore High Court. The judicial landscape has also changed following the 27th Constitutional Amendment. After the amendment, Justice K K Agha was elevated to the newly established Federal Constitutional Court. Another judge of the Sindh High Court was transferred to the Islamabad High Court.

    ISLAMABAD: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has asked Pakistan’s provincial governments to generate an additional Rs430 billion in tax revenue during the current fiscal year, as part of broader efforts to strengthen public finances and increase provincial own-source revenues. According to official details, the proposed increase in tax collection is equivalent to 0.3 per cent of Pakistan’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and is expected to be shared among the four provinces in line with their allocations under the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award. The move is aimed at improving fiscal sustainability by encouraging provinces to rely more on locally generated revenues rather than transfers from the federal government. Officials believe stronger provincial tax collection would also help create greater financial discipline and support long-term economic reforms. Sources said each province would contribute to the additional revenue target based on its respective share under the NFC formula, although specific collection targets for individual provinces have yet to be announced. The recommendation comes as Pakistan continues implementing economic reforms under its programme with the IMF, with revenue mobilisation remaining one of the key priorities for both the federal and provincial governments. Meanwhile, the federal government has decided to establish an inter-ministerial committee, to be headed by the prime minister, for the implementation of decisions made by the National Economic Council (NEC). According to officials, the committee will include federal and provincial ministers along with senior government representatives. It will be responsible for monitoring the execution of national policies, reviewing progress on major development initiatives and ensuring timely implementation of decisions taken by the NEC. The committee is also expected to strengthen coordination between the federation and the provinces, particularly on economic planning, fiscal reforms and development projects that require close cooperation among different levels of government. Government sources said improved coordination is considered essential for achieving national economic objectives and ensuring that development programmes are implemented efficiently across the country. Economists say increasing provincial tax revenues has long been a key recommendation of international financial institutions, which argue that greater fiscal autonomy can improve governance, reduce dependence on federal transfers and create a more balanced financial system. The IMF’s latest recommendation is likely to shape upcoming provincial budgetary decisions as governments evaluate measures to expand their tax base while balancing the need to protect economic activity. The proposed revenue measures are expected to remain a major focus of fiscal policy discussions in the months ahead.

    District judge, security guard killed in gun attac…

    A district and sessions judge and his security guard were killed after unidentified gunmen opened fire on their vehicle on the national highway in Balochistan’s Mastung district on Thursday. The attack also left an additional sessions judge and another passenger seriously injured, according to local authorities. Deputy Commissioner Bahram Saleem said District and Sessions Judge Abdul Hakeem Kakar was travelling from Quetta to Mastung when armed assailants ambushed his vehicle. The attackers opened fire, killing Judge Kakar and his security guard on the spot. Additional Sessions Judge Tariq Lashari and another individual sustained critical injuries and were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, where they continue to receive medical treatment. Following the incident, security forces and law enforcement agencies sealed off the area and launched a large-scale search operation. Checkpoints were established along key routes in an effort to track down and arrest those responsible for the attack. The incident drew strong condemnation from Pakistan’s political leadership. President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and offered prayers for the recovery of the injured. He stated that anti-state elements backed by foreign interests would never succeed in destabilizing Pakistan and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to eliminating terrorism. He stressed that terrorist groups and those supporting them could not weaken Pakistan’s institutions or its determination to maintain peace. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also condemned the attack, calling it another attempt by anti-state forces to undermine national stability. He reiterated the government’s resolve to eliminate terrorism in all its forms and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti described the attack as a direct assault on the state and its institutions. According to the chief minister, the sacrifice of those protecting the law would not be forgotten, and the government would intensify operations against terrorist networks across the province. He further emphasized that there would be no safe haven for militants in Balochistan and that the state’s authority would be upheld at all costs. Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Information and Political Affairs, Shahid Rind, also denounced the attack, calling the killing of a judge and his security guard a deeply tragic incident. He said targeting members of the judiciary and legal community was part of a broader attempt to weaken the rule of law but insisted such efforts would fail. He added that the provincial government had directed authorities to provide the best possible medical care to the injured while extending full support to the victims’ families. Balochistan Home Minister Mir Ziaullah Langove expressed grief over the attack and ordered an immediate investigation. He directed the Inspector General of Police and the provincial commissioner to submit a detailed report and ensure the swift arrest of those responsible. He reaffirmed that protecting citizens and state institutions remains the government’s highest priority. The Balochistan Bar Council strongly condemned the attack, describing it as an assault on the judiciary, the legal profession, and the rule of law. In protest, the council announced a two-day boycott of court proceedings and declared three days of mourning. Lawyers across the province will wear black armbands while appearing before courts. The council also demanded enhanced security for judges, lawyers, and court staff, reaffirming the legal community’s commitment to defending justice and standing united against terrorism.
