A major inter-provincial drug smuggling attempt was foiled in Karachi after a joint operation by a federal civil intelligence agency and Mochko Police resulted in the seizure of 66 kilograms of hashish and the arrest of two suspects.

According to District Keamari Police, authorities received intelligence indicating that a large quantity of narcotics was being transported from Balochistan to Karachi. Acting on the tip-off, law enforcement officials established a checkpoint on Hub River Road to intercept the suspected vehicle.

During the operation, officers signaled a Toyota Land Cruiser to stop. Instead of complying, the occupants attempted to flee at high speed by diverting onto an unpaved road. However, the vehicle lost control and overturned, allowing police to quickly move in and apprehend the suspects.

The arrested individuals were identified as Faisal and Abdul Wali. A thorough search of the overturned vehicle led to the recovery of 66 kilograms of hashish, which had been concealed in multiple packages inside the Land Cruiser. The vehicle was also taken into police custody as part of the investigation.

Police officials stated that the narcotics were allegedly being smuggled from Balochistan into Karachi as part of an inter-provincial trafficking operation. Investigators believe the suspects may be linked to a larger drug trafficking network operating across provincial borders.

A case has been registered against the accused under the relevant anti-narcotics laws. Authorities have launched further investigations to identify other members of the network, determine the intended destination of the seized drugs, and uncover the full scope of the smuggling operation.

Law enforcement agencies described the operation as a significant success in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking. Officials reiterated their commitment to carrying out intelligence-based operations to dismantle narcotics networks and strengthen public safety across Karachi and other parts of Pakistan.

The successful seizure highlights the growing coordination between intelligence agencies and local police in combating organized crime. Authorities have urged the public to continue reporting suspicious activities, emphasizing that community cooperation remains essential in preventing drug trafficking and maintaining law and order.

    Punjab Police Chief Abdul Kareem has said the deaths of two women at Lahore’s Township Police Station were caused by combined drug toxicity, ruling out physical violence or police torture as the cause of death. Addressing a press conference at the Central Police Office in Lahore, the Inspector General of Police said a detailed investigation had been conducted into the deaths. The Lahore CCPO and DIG Investigation also attended the briefing. According to the IG, the Medical Board found no signs of physical assault, external injuries or wounds on either woman. A separate magisterial inquiry conducted under Section 176 of the Code of Criminal Procedure also found no evidence of torture by police officials. The police reviewed complete CCTV footage related to the incident and recorded statements from police personnel and witnesses. The two women had been brought to Township Police Station following action on a 15 emergency call. A case under Sections 379 and 420 of the Pakistan Penal Code was subsequently registered after a written complaint was received. Police said both women had previously been involved in several alleged fraud and cheating cases registered in Lahore and Gujrat. CCTV footage also showed that their clothes appeared to have been torn before they were taken into police custody. The Medical Board had earlier observed several injection marks on the women’s arms. Samples were subsequently collected by the Punjab Forensic Science Authority for detailed examination. The final forensic report has now confirmed the presence of nine different types of drugs in samples obtained from both women. The Medical Board concluded that the combination of drugs caused toxicity, leading to cardiopulmonary arrest and death. IG Punjab Abdul Kareem said the police would continue to follow the law and ensure transparent accountability. He stressed that no individual would be treated as being above the law. The police chief also briefed the media on several other cases. He said significant progress had been made in the Hina Javed murder investigation in Rawalpindi, where three suspects were nominated and two had been arrested. Investigators, he said, established that an incident initially reported as suicide was actually a murder. Regarding the Abdullah Tahir murder case, the IG said police were working to arrest the suspected shooters. The suspects reportedly fled towards Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and efforts were underway to trace their whereabouts. On police reforms, Abdul Kareem said the Dolphin Force was being reorganised, with its command and control to be placed under local station house officers. The department is also considering modern electric motorcycles for the force, while new motorcycles have already been provided to Murree Police for improved patrolling. The IG further announced stronger measures against corruption within the police department. He said the Internal Accountability Branch was being strengthened and regional and district police officers had been directed to take strict action against officials involved in corrupt practices. Speaking about the Ghaziabad rape case, the IG said police had arrested the nominated suspect and secured relevant medical, forensic and CCTV evidence. Footage from the police station, Safe City cameras and other local cameras was collected, while statements from the victim, complainant, relatives and other relevant individuals were recorded. Police personnel found negligent in the case were suspended and departmental inquiries were initiated. The Punjab Institute of Mental Health also conducted assessments of the victim.

    LAHORE: In a major step towards prison reform and prisoner rehabilitation, the Punjab government has launched the “Naya Aaghaz” (New Beginning) Programme, an initiative designed to provide interest-free loans to eligible inmates after their release, enabling them to start small businesses and successfully reintegrate into society. The programme, introduced under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s prison reform agenda, is being implemented through a partnership between the Punjab Home Department and Akhuwat Islamic Microfinance. The agreement aims to support former prisoners by helping them achieve financial independence using vocational skills acquired during their imprisonment. Under the initiative, eligible released prisoners will be able to obtain interest-free loans of up to Rs200,000 to either establish a new business or expand an existing one. The loans will be repaid in equal monthly instalments over 36 months, while recovered funds will be recycled to support future beneficiaries. An initial revolving fund of Rs5 million has been allocated by Akhuwat Islamic Microfinance to launch the programme. All administrative and operational costs will be borne by Akhuwat, ensuring that neither the Punjab Home Department nor the Punjab Prisons Department faces any financial burden. The Punjab Prisons Department will identify inmates expected to be released within the next three months and assess their eligibility based on their conduct in prison and the vocational training they have successfully completed. Final verification of loan applications will be carried out independently by Akhuwat in accordance with its lending policies. Officials said Punjab’s prisons currently offer certified vocational training programmes across all correctional facilities, with inmates receiving technical education in 23 different trades. More than 28,000 prisoners have already earned vocational certificates through TEVTA and PVTC training centres, while approximately 6,500 inmates are presently undergoing skills training. Additionally, 74 psychologists are working in Punjab prisons to encourage rehabilitation through counselling and positive engagement. The agreement was signed by DIG Prisons Ahmed Naveed Gondal and Akhuwat CEO Dr Kamran Shams in the presence of Chairman of the Chief Minister’s Task Force on Prisons Rana Manan Khan, Punjab Home Secretary Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi, Akhuwat Foundation Chairman Dr Amjad Saqib, Inspector General Prisons Mian Salik Jalal, senior Home Department officials and other representatives. Speaking at the ceremony, Rana Manan Khan said the programme would enable released prisoners to become financially self-reliant and lead respectable lives after completing their sentences. He described prison reforms as one of the Punjab government’s highest priorities and said the administration was committed to transforming prisons into genuine rehabilitation centres. Punjab Home Secretary Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to reducing poverty, promoting social reintegration and ensuring that former prisoners return to society as productive and self-sufficient citizens. He added that education, vocational training and discipline were central to the government’s vision of modern prison reforms. Akhuwat Foundation Chairman Dr Amjad Saqib said the programme is entirely based on the principle of Qarz-e-Hasna (benevolent, interest-free loans) and will provide released inmates with a dignified opportunity to rebuild their lives. He noted that Akhuwat has so far disbursed over Rs500 billion in interest-free loans to around 4.5 million families across Pakistan. Officials also clarified that individuals listed under the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) or designated under United Nations Security Council sanctions will not qualify for the scheme. They further stated that the Punjab government and the Prisons Department will not be responsible for loan defaults, business losses or repayment issues, as all lending decisions and monitoring will remain the responsibility of Akhuwat Islamic Microfinance.

According to the report, US Central Command initially provided regular updates on troop injuries during the early stages of the conflict but has since stopped routinely announcing non fatal casualties. As a result, the Defence Casualty Analysis System has become the main official source for casualty information, although its updates have reportedly lagged behind events. A Pentagon official told CNN that documenting military injuries can take several days or even weeks because cases must go through medical evaluations and administrative reviews before being entered into official records. The official maintained that the casualty database is updated regularly despite the delays. The report said that since the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding in mid June, the database initially recorded one new military death and 14 wounded personnel. The fatality was identified as Navy Commander Gabriel Edwards, a helicopter pilot who was lost at sea in the Arabian Sea on July 1. CNN reported that casualty figures appeared to be added in batches rather than immediately after incidents. One injured Air Force member was reportedly listed in a July 13 update, while another update on July 17 included 10 wounded soldiers and three injured sailors. After CNN published its report, the casualty database was updated again on July 20 with four additional military deaths and 20 more wounded service members. Despite those updates, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said the official database still did not fully reflect the total number of injuries. In a statement posted on social media, he said nearly 100 US service members had been injured since July 7, adding that most suffered minor concussions. Parnell defended the Pentagon’s approach to releasing casualty information, arguing that providing immediate details about non fatal injuries could give valuable information to adversaries and potentially place more military personnel at risk. He also said the Pentagon and US Central Command have continued providing regular updates on military operations against Iran. According to Parnell, public statements by President Donald Trump and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth have also kept the public informed about the objectives and progress of the campaign. The report also highlighted several recent attacks involving US forces in the region. An Iranian missile strike on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan reportedly killed two American service members and left another missing. In a separate incident in northern Iraq, another US soldier died during the controlled destruction of a downed Iranian drone. US Central Command confirmed that one service member was injured during the Iraq operation. It also said four personnel who were treated in hospitals in Jordan following the airbase attack had been discharged after receiving medical care. Officials added that several other military personnel suffered minor injuries but were able to return to duty after medical evaluation. The latest report has renewed questions about the speed and transparency of casualty reporting during military operations, with critics arguing that delayed disclosures make it more difficult for the public to understand the human cost of the conflict.

More than 172 million shares changed hands during the session, while the total value of traded shares exceeded Rs9 billion, indicating continued participation by investors despite market weakness. The latest decline came a day after the stock market ended slightly higher following a volatile session. On Tuesday, the KSE-100 Index had climbed more than 2,000 points during intraday trading before profit-taking erased most of the gains, allowing the market to close with only a modest increase.

Authorities have directed college administrations to take necessary steps to prevent students and staff from using prohibited substances on campus. The Directorate of College Education has also contacted deputy commissioners to help control the sale and use of tobacco products and drugs around college areas.
