Terrorist killed in joint operation in Bannu

A terrorist was killed during a joint intelligence-based operation in Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, police said on Monday.

The operation was carried out by district police, the Counter-Terrorism Department, the Quick Response Force and security forces.

The operation took place in the Miryan area after intelligence reports indicated the presence of suspected terrorists.

Security personnel conducted searches in Khani Kalay, Barakzai and nearby areas. The areas fall within the jurisdiction of Miryan police station.

An exchange of fire took place during the operation. One unidentified terrorist was killed.

Police said the identity of the deceased was being established.

A Kalashnikov was recovered from the scene. Three magazines and a bandolier were also found in the possession of the killed terrorist.

Security personnel later conducted search operations in surrounding areas. Several suspected individuals were detained for questioning.

Bannu District Police Officer Captain (retd) Muhammad Furqan Bilal praised the personnel who participated in the operation.

He described the security and police personnel fighting terrorism as the country’s real heroes.

The DPO said intelligence-based operations would continue across Bannu. He said the objective was to eliminate terrorism and crime from the district.

He also urged local residents to cooperate with law-enforcement agencies. Citizens were asked to report suspicious individuals and activities to police.

The latest operation is part of intensified security efforts in Bannu. The district has witnessed several terrorist incidents and counterterrorism operations in recent months.

On July 20, another joint intelligence-based operation was conducted in Bannu. Police said one suspected terrorist was killed and eight others were detained during that operation.

The operation involved district police, the Elite Force, CTD personnel and Pakistan Army troops.

Security forces had also established checkpoints and cordoned off the area during the operation.

Police said the killed suspect was allegedly attempting to plant an improvised explosive device. A Kalashnikov, magazines and ammunition were recovered.

Security concerns in Bannu have increased following several attacks targeting police and security installations.

On July 15, terrorists attacked the Miryan police station using an explosives-laden vehicle. A prolonged exchange of fire followed the attack.

Six police officers and four civilians were injured in the incident.

The attackers also damaged a bridge leading to the police station. Authorities believed the move was intended to slow the arrival of reinforcements.

The wider security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has remained challenging. Balochistan has also witnessed an increase in militant activity.

Security forces have responded with intelligence-based operations against suspected militant networks.

Authorities have repeatedly stressed the need for public cooperation to counter terrorism. Officials have also raised concerns about militant groups operating from across the Afghan border.

The latest operation in Bannu reflects the continued efforts of law-enforcement and security agencies to prevent further attacks.

TTP-linked suspect arrested in Karachi joint operation, weapons and explosives recovered

KARACHI: Pakistan Rangers (Sindh), in coordination with the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), have arrested a suspected militant allegedly affiliated with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) during an intelligence-based operation in Karachi, according to the Rangers spokesperson. The security agencies also recovered weapons and explosives from the suspect, who was allegedly involved in collecting funds for a TTP-linked faction and transferring money to its leadership, the spokesperson said on Sunday. The suspect was identified as Shahzad alias Dunger and was taken into custody during a joint operation conducted in the Jacob Lines area of Jamshed Town. Suspect allegedly joined TTP-linked group in 2025 According to the Rangers, Shahzad became associated with the Mansoor group of the TTP in 2025 after allegedly being influenced by the group’s leader, Mansoor. Investigators believe that the suspect was subsequently assigned the task of generating financial resources for the organisation in Karachi. The Rangers spokesperson said Shahzad allegedly approached individuals in the Manghopir area and persuaded them to make regular monthly payments to the militant group. The collected funds were then allegedly transferred to Waziristan through Easypaisa accounts provided by Din Muhammad, an alleged associate of Mansoor who was based in Tank. During interrogation, Shahzad reportedly told investigators that the money was ultimately transferred to Mansoor and used to support the group’s militant activities. Alleged meetings with militant leader The Rangers said the suspect had travelled to Waziristan several times and held clandestine meetings with Mansoor. According to the investigation, Shahzad allegedly met Mansoor in Birmal in June 2026, where he was instructed to expand and strengthen the group’s network in Karachi. The alleged objectives included carrying out terrorist activities and raising money through extortion, the Rangers said. Following the meeting, Mansoor allegedly arranged for weapons and explosives to be delivered to Shahzad through another unidentified associate. Security officials said the recovered material was allegedly intended for use in planned attacks against sensitive installations and locations in Karachi. Raids launched to trace other suspects The Rangers said further investigations were underway and raids were being conducted at different locations to identify and arrest other members of the suspected network. The operation comes amid continued efforts by law-enforcement and security agencies to disrupt militant financing, recruitment and operational networks in Karachi. Officials have increasingly focused on financial channels used by militant organisations, as investigators seek to prevent funds from reaching groups involved in terrorism. Karachi has witnessed several major security incidents The latest arrest comes against the backdrop of a series of major terrorist and militant attacks in Karachi in recent years. On June 28, security forces foiled an attempted attack on a Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) camp in the city. Three Rangers personnel were killed and four others were injured in the incident. According to the military’s media wing, the assault was carried out by militants described as “Khwarij belonging to Indian proxy, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar”. The attackers reportedly detonated an explosive at the main gate of the Rangers camp before attempting to penetrate the security perimeter. Security personnel resisted the assault, killing three attackers and capturing another militant in an injured condition. The captured suspect was identified as an Afghan national. The incident was described as one of the most serious attacks targeting security personnel in Karachi in recent years. Previous attacks raised security concerns Karachi has experienced several significant security incidents over the past few years, highlighting the continuing challenges faced by law-enforcement agencies in the country’s largest city. In April 2022, a suicide bombing outside Karachi University’s Confucius Institute killed several people, including Chinese nationals. The attack was claimed by the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA). In February 2023, militants launched an assault on the Karachi Police Office, leading to a prolonged security operation before the attackers were neutralised. Another major incident occurred in October 2024, when a bombing near Karachi Airport targeted a convoy and killed several people, including Chinese engineers. The incident further intensified concerns over the security of foreign nationals and critical infrastructure in the city. Against this backdrop, security agencies have continued intelligence-based operations aimed at dismantling militant networks before they can carry out attacks.

Trump hits back at Canada as tariff war escalates

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has lashed out at Canada after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced retaliatory tariffs on American goods, deepening a trade dispute that threatens to further strain economic ties between the two neighbouring countries. Trump responded sharply on Sunday after Canada confirmed that new tariffs targeting US products would take effect on September 8. “Canada wants the benefits of being a state, without being one!!!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social, while also accusing Canada of imposing heavy tariffs on American farmers for years. The latest escalation follows the introduction of new US tariffs covering around $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. The measures, which took effect on Saturday, impose tariffs of up to 50 per cent and affect products ranging from hockey sticks and cement to other Canadian exports. Carney announced Canada’s response a day earlier, saying Ottawa would impose new tariffs particularly targeting American steel and dairy products. The Canadian prime minister described the situation in unusually forceful terms, saying the country had effectively been “attacked” and was responding accordingly. The confrontation follows the collapse of recent trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa. Earlier discussions had appeared more constructive, with Trump saying he believed the United States could reach an agreement with Canada and pointing to his positive relationship with Carney. But Carney said the latest US demands had crossed a line. According to the Canadian leader, Washington proposed terms that were “uneconomic” and “unfair” while undermining the benefits Canada expected from a potential agreement. Ottawa ultimately rejected the proposal. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer offered a different account of the negotiations. He told The New York Times that Washington had offered to reduce tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminium and automobiles while also removing a recently imposed tariff on Canadian lumber. Greer said the proposed measures would have provided Canada with exceptionally favourable treatment compared with other US trading partners. However, the offer failed to produce a breakthrough. Greer also told Fox News that Washington was preparing measures in response to Canada’s retaliation, signalling that the dispute could escalate further rather than return immediately to the negotiating table. A senior US official described the latest talks as candid but not acrimonious, suggesting that despite the increasingly hostile public statements, both sides had maintained communication during negotiations. The economic stakes are significant. The United States and Canada share one of the world’s largest trading relationships, with businesses and consumers on both sides relying heavily on cross-border commerce. The latest tariffs could therefore raise costs for companies, disrupt supply chains and put additional pressure on industries already facing uncertainty. With Canadian counter-tariffs scheduled to take effect in September, attention will now turn to whether Washington and Ottawa can find a compromise before the measures trigger a wider trade confrontation.

PPP rejects Azad Kashmir election results, alleges…

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Secretary General Nayyar Bukhari has strongly rejected the election results, declaring that his party will not accept what he described as a flawed and manipulated electoral process. Addressing a press conference in Muzaffarabad, Bukhari alleged that the elections were marred by widespread irregularities, voter manipulation, and violence, making them neither free nor fair. Bukhari claimed that the PPP possesses evidence of electoral misconduct. According to him, ballot papers were allegedly distributed among supporters of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and party workers were seen providing ballot papers outside polling stations. He argued that such practices seriously undermined the credibility of the electoral process and violated the principles of transparent and democratic elections. Speaking to journalists, Bukhari questioned the fairness of the election, stating that a truly transparent election should allow voters to cast their ballots freely without interference or manipulation. He accused the authorities and political rivals of attempting to ensure victory for their preferred candidates through unfair means. As a result, he emphasized that the PPP does not recognize these elections as free and fair and therefore refuses to accept the announced results. The PPP leader also made serious allegations against a PML-N candidate, claiming that the individual was involved in a murder case. He urged the relevant law enforcement agencies and government institutions to take immediate notice of the matter and ensure that those responsible are arrested and brought to justice. According to Bukhari, allowing such individuals to contest elections raises serious concerns about the rule of law and the integrity of the democratic process. Bukhari further alleged that law and order in Azad Jammu and Kashmir had significantly deteriorated. He pointed to what he described as increasing incidents of violence and political intimidation during the election period. Referring to recent events, he claimed that even the President of Azad Kashmir had been attacked, calling it evidence of the worsening security situation and the failure of the authorities to maintain peace. He also highlighted attacks on members of his own party. Bukhari stated that PPP Member of the National Assembly Salahuddin Junejo was attacked, while PPP worker Mushtaq Hussain Shah was killed. He described these incidents as tragic examples of political violence and intimidation aimed at discouraging democratic participation. Furthermore, he alleged that in constituency LA-31, the PPP candidate was attacked by PML-N workers and was subsequently hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the incident. Describing the elections as fraudulent and heavily rigged, Bukhari argued that the overall electoral environment was neither peaceful nor impartial. He maintained that the democratic rights of voters had been compromised and that the results failed to reflect the genuine will of the people. He stressed that elections conducted under such circumstances cannot earn public confidence or democratic legitimacy. Concluding his remarks, Bukhari stated that governments established through coercion and manipulation cannot gain lasting public acceptance. He reaffirmed that the PPP respects the will of the people and believes that democratic principles must always be upheld. However, he alleged that the public mandate, particularly in the Mirpur Division, had not been respected. According to Bukhari, the people of Azad Kashmir had rejected the PML-N, and the election results did not accurately represent the voters’ true choice.

  • 46 Passport officials overstay foreign postings, audit flags irregular payments

Islamabad: Forty six officers and employees of the Directorate General Immigration and Passports remained posted at Pakistani missions abroad after completing their allowed three year tenure, while audit declared salaries, allowances and other benefits paid after the expiry of their foreign assignments irregular and unauthorized. The issue triggered strong criticism in the Public Accounts Committee, where members demanded to know why the officials were not called back and who was responsible for failing to implement the approved policy. The existing foreign posting policy clearly states that Immigration and Passport staff sent to Pakistani missions abroad are to serve for 36 months. The policy states this period is not extendable. It further states that the posting automatically ends after 36 months and pay should stop at that point. The replacement process is also required to begin at least one year before an official completes the foreign posting so that passport operations at missions are not disturbed. Audit found that the department did not follow these requirements. The department provided a list of 46 officials and employees who had served at different Pakistani missions abroad. The locations included Dubai, Jeddah, Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Doha, Kuwait, Milan, London, Barcelona, Paris, Rome, Frankfurt, Manchester, Toronto, New York, Madrid, Hong Kong, Washington, Sydney, Chicago, Berlin, Bangkok, Copenhagen, Los Angeles, Stockholm, Tokyo, Tehran and Vancouver. Audit said the officials had not returned to Pakistan after completion of their foreign assignments. It also said management had failed to arrange their replacements in time. According to the audit, payments of salaries, allowances and other benefits after the completion of the approved foreign posting period were irregular and unauthorized. Audit said failure to follow the foreign posting policy violated instructions issued by the Establishment Division and the Ministry of Interior. It recommended an investigation to determine responsibility and called for regularizing the period during which the officials remained abroad beyond their approved tenure. The matter became more controversial during discussion before the Public Accounts Committee. Members repeatedly asked Immigration and Passport officials why the employees were not recalled after completing three years. Officials said the staff had originally been posted under the existing policy. They explained that proposals for a new policy had later been sent to the Ministry of Interior but had not been finalized. Committee members were not satisfied with that explanation. They argued that until a new policy was formally approved, the existing policy remained binding. Members said government departments could not stop following an approved policy simply because another policy was being prepared. One member said the rules had to be followed as written and officials could not decide for themselves whether an approved policy was right or wrong. The member said a clear violation had taken place because the officials remained abroad after their tenure without proper regularization or recall. Questions were also raised over who had the authority to approve any extension when the existing policy itself described the foreign posting period as non extendable. Members said the matter may have required approval from a higher forum if the government wanted to keep the officials abroad after their original tenure expired. The committee also questioned why the department had not started the replacement process before the officials completed their assignments. Officials acknowledged during the discussion that requests concerning replacements and policy changes were sent after some tenures had already ended. Members pointed out that the department already knew from the start that every foreign posting would end after three years. They therefore questioned why replacement planning was not started earlier. Criticism sharpened when members discussed the scale of the issue. The committee was told that the matter involved 46 officials, not one or two exceptional cases. One member remarked that it appeared as if a large part of the department was enjoying extended stays outside the country. Another member said the handling of the policy showed a troubling level of carelessness and called for the case to be treated as an example so that other departments do not ignore government rules in the same way. A further concern involved the money spent on officials after their approved tenure had ended. One committee member argued that if the officials were staying abroad in violation of the policy, questions would also arise about the legality of expenditure on their salaries, allowances and other benefits during that extra period. The member said the matter could not be solved simply by deciding whether to call the officials back or allow them to remain abroad. The period already spent beyond the approved tenure would also have to be regularized through the proper authority. The Interior Secretary acknowledged that the policy had not been implemented and suggested taking the matter to the appropriate forum for regularization. He also said approval from the Finance Division could be needed for expenditure incurred during the additional period. Officials suggested that the Cabinet or another competent authority might have to decide how to treat the overstayed period. Management had earlier told the Departmental Accounts Committee that the foreign posting policy was under review. It also said the Interior Minister had approved the continuation of currently posted officials until their replacements joined. According to management, official passports could also be renewed under the relevant rules to avoid legal complications in host countries. Audit did not accept this explanation as a settlement of the objection. It maintained that the existing approved policy had been violated because the revised policy had not yet been finalized and the continued foreign postings were unauthorized under the policy that remained in force. Committee members also stressed that responsibility could not simply disappear once the overstay was regularized. They said officials who failed to implement the approved foreign posting policy should also be identified. The committee called for accountability from those who allowed the situation to continue. Members also demanded a transparent selection process for replacement officials. They said employees whose tenure had already expired should be brought back according to the existing rules while new staff should be selected
