80 Years, still no justice

Chiniot: A family in Chiniot is still waiting for justice in a theft case that was reportedly registered shortly after Pakistan came into being in 1947.

The case dates back nearly 80 years. According to the affected family, a large amount of gold silver expensive clothes and other valuables were stolen from their home on the night between August 14 and 15, 1947.

The family says the case was among the first cases registered in Chiniot after independence and was recorded as FIR No. 8.

According to the family, around 112 to 120 tolas of gold, silver items, Boski fabric and other expensive clothes were stolen.  The value of these items would be worth millions of rupees today.

Despite the passage of almost eight decades the stolen property has never been recovered and the family says there is still no clear record of what happened to the case.

To mark 80 years of waiting for justice the family held a unique protest. They had a cake made featuring the text of the old FIR and cut it to draw the attention of the authorities.

Family members say their elders spent years visiting police stations and courts in the hope of recovering their belongings.  However several generations have passed without any clear result.

A family member Sajid Ismail Dar, said that applications had also been submitted to senior Punjab Police officials in the past.  Some officials took notice of the matter but the case later went quiet again.

The family has now appealed to the Inspector General of Punjab Police and the Chief Minister of Punjab to review the decades old case investigate whether the stolen property can still be traced and provide justice to the family.

    Pakistan names first lunar rover “Jinnah-1”

    Islamabad: The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has officially announced the name of Pakistan’s first lunar rover. According to SUPARCO, Pakistan’s first lunar rover has been named “Jinnah-1.” The name was selected from suggestions submitted through a nationwide competition. More than 4,000 proposals were received from across the country. SUPARCO stated that seven participants had suggested the name “Jinnah-1.” The winner was selected through a lucky draw and 17-year-old Tayyab Karim from Bahawalnagar was declared the winner for proposing the name. Tribute to Quaid-e-Azam The Chairman of SUPARCO said that “Jinnah-1” is a tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He added that the name represents Pakistan’s determination, progress and pursuit of new frontiers in space exploration. It is worth mentioning that Pakistan’s first lunar rover is scheduled to be sent to the Moon in 2029 as part of China’s Chang’e-8 mission. The Jinnah-1 rover will conduct scientific research on the Moon’s south pole.

  • Int Youth Day – concerns, challenges of Pakistani youth

The day is observed on the recommendation of the United Nations to highlight the problems faced by young people, recognise their important role in economic and social development, and ensure their meaningful participation in decision-making. The theme of International Youth Day 2026 is “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.” The theme recognises that young people live in different national, local and social conditions, but their basic hopes are almost the same everywhere. They want a dignified life, equal opportunities, good employment, quality education and a safe and secure future. Pakistan has 64% of those who are under the age of 30, out of the 64% half of the numbers are in educational institutions and rest of them are out with some of the reasons. We are among the countries that spend the least on education, allocating around 2% of its total budget to the education . India spends around 4% while Sri Lanka and Bangladesh allocate around 2% or less. The United Nations recommends that 4% should be allocated to education. Pakistan has more than 190 universities including private and government over 100 sub-campuses, with nearly two million students studying in higher education. Providing four to five million jobs for these students in the coming years will be essential. University students face many problems in their daily routine on campus, These include rising fees, low quality of education, a lack of research opportunities, shortage of hostels and transport, inequality and harassment. At the school level, more than 15 million children are still out of school, these stats are same for years . Poor educational facilities, shortage of furniture, lack of clean drinking water, shortage of teachers and limited funding are among the main reasons. The state of higher education is also worrying. Only one Pakistani public university, Quaid-i-Azam University is among the world’s top 500 universities, while around 10 Indian universities are included in the same list. These figures raise serious questions about government priorities and the gap between official claims and the actual condition of education. Theme of International Youth Day directly connects with the problems faced by Pakistani youth. Quality education, decent employment, mental health and meaningful participation in decision-making have remained major issues for young people for decades. These problems have also increased frustration, intolerance and extremism among youth . When an educated person fails to achieve his or her goals because of a lack of merit and fair opportunities frustration naturally grows. Unfortunately, youth in Pakistan still lack a clear vision for their future and meaningful government support. The Prime Minister’s Youth Programme has mainly focused on initiatives such as laptops and scholarships, but there is a need for a much broader plan covering employment, career development, mental health and future opportunities for youth . Holding one or two youth conferences during the year cannot be enough to address these issues.Climate change has become a major challenge for the world, but Pakistan still needs a stronger plan to involve young people in dealing with it. There is also a lack of awareness and practical programmes through which young people can contribute to tackling climate change. Mental health is another serious issue. The United Nations continues to highlight the importance of addressing mental health problems among young people, but in Pakistan the issue has not received the attention it deserves. In many countries, educational institutions have dedicated departments and support systems for students’ mental health and wellbeing. Pakistan needs similar facilities. Reports of serious mental health problems and suicides among students should be treated as a national concern. Today’s students wants to see solutions to its problems through its own participation and leadership. Across Asia, the growing role of Generation Z in political and government affairs has been remarkable. India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka have witnessed major youth movements in which youth have challenged governments and demanded political and social change. Youth are also important stakeholders in educational institutions. Around the world students participate in student unions and societies, which help them develop both academic and personal skills. Debates, dialogue, sports and other activities help students build confidence, leadership and communication skills. In countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada, students are generally allowed to form unions and societies in educational institutions. These organisations are supported by universities and provide students with opportunities to develop leadership and democratic skills. Many people who later become successful in medicine, science, social sciences, sports, politics and other fields gain valuable experience through such activities during their student years. The well-known historian Dr Mubarak Ali wrote in his book Tareekh Ke Naye Zaviye that when ideological politics began among young people in the subcontinent, nationalism was one of its early forms. Students became divided between the political right and left. However, this ideological debate also encouraged students to read and study different ideas. They began to understand society and its structure through different political and social perspectives. This process helped young people develop stronger intellectual and political awareness. Democratic societies recognise the right of students to participate in political and democratic activities. In Pakistan, however, student unions have faced restrictions for almost three decades. They were banned mainly because of allegations of political violence and clashes on campuses. As a result, universities lost an important platform for political discussion, debate on social issues and dialogue on national affairs.The culture of student unions in the 1990s are very different from the environment today. In the age of artificial intelligence, social media and digital communication, educational institutions can develop a new and more responsible model of student representation. Pakistan needs to create an environment where youth can discuss their problems through dialogue and democratic participation. Students should be represented in educational decision-making bodies and given a meaningful role in consultation. Instead of taking their problems to the streets, young people should have proper platforms where they can present their concerns directly to policymakers and

  • Not all green foods are healthy

    Vegetables and fruits are generally considered an important part of a healthy diet.  Health experts also recommend including them in a balanced meal. However not everything that is green is automatically good for everyone. Some raw undercooked artificial or  rich green foods may cause health problems in  certain people. People with weak immune systems may be more sensitive to some foods and could experience allergies food reactions or other health problems. Green potatoes some green seafood products and foods with artificial green coloring are examples that may require extra care. Some people can also develop an allergy or intolerance to certain green foods. For example spinach may cause skin rashes or other allergic symptoms in sensitive individuals. In rare and serious cases a food allergy can lead to a dangerous reaction called anaphylaxis. Anyone who notices allergy symptoms after eating a particular food should seek medical advice. People with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) may also need to be careful with certain green vegetables.  Foods such as cabbage broccoli and Brussels sprouts can cause gas bloating stomach discomfort and pain in some people. People with kidney problems should also pay attention to their food choices. Spinach and Swiss chard contain high amounts of potassium. Eating too much of these foods may be risky for people with advanced kidney disease because their kidneys may have difficulty removing extra potassium from the body. This can lead to an unhealthy electrolyte balance. Eating too much of any food can cause problems and green foods are no exception. Large amounts of raw vegetables may cause bloating, constipation stomach pain or digestive discomfort in some people. In certain cases excessive intake of particular foods may also increase the risk of kidney stones electrolyte problems low blood sugar or allergic reactions. Some green fruits and vegetables may also cause digestive problems when eaten raw.  For example raw bananas and papaya may cause gas or stomach discomfort in some people. People who take warfarin a blood thinning medicine also known by the brand name Coumadin should talk to their doctor about eating large amounts of green leafy vegetables. These vegetables are often high in vitamin K, which can affect how warfarin works. The important thing is usually to keep vitamin K intake consistent rather than suddenly changing the amount. Spinach, Swiss chard and beetroot are also high in oxalates.  For some people who are prone to kidney stones, eating large amounts of these foods may increase the chance of developing stones again. Raw or lightly cooked green vegetables can provide many nutrients but they can sometimes be difficult to digest.  Vegetables such as cabbage broccoli and Brussels sprouts contain fiber that may cause digestive discomfort in some people especially when eaten in large amounts. Green potatoes are another important exception. When a potato turns green it may contain higher levels of a natural chemical called solanine.  Eating a large amount of solanine can cause nausea, vomiting, and in severe cases nervous system problems. Green potatoes should therefore be handled with care. Green tea is also not completely harmless in every situation. Poor quality green tea may contain unwanted impurities or low quality ingredients. Drinking very strong or very hot green tea may cause stomach discomfort in some people. Green tea also contains caffeine and too much caffeine can lead to nervousness shaking sleep problems or other side effects. Artificially green foods are not necessarily healthy either. Green colored candies sweet drinks and other processed foods may contain large amounts of sugar and provide little nutritional value.  Eating these foods regularly can contribute to tooth damage high blood sugar and other health problems. The main point is that green color alone does not make a food healthy.  The type of food the amount eaten how it is prepared and a person’s health condition all matter. People with food allergies, IBS, kidney problems or those taking certain medicines should be especially careful and seek medical advice when needed.

  • New breakthrough against superbugs

    Bacteria that cause infections are becoming harder to treat because many of them no longer respond to common antibiotics. These bacteria known as superbugs have developed resistance to medicines that once killed them easily.  As a result infections that were once simple to treat are becoming much more dangerous. Health experts say that every year thousands of people die from antibiotic resistant infections. This growing problem also makes surgeries cancer treatments and many hospital procedures riskier because patients are more likely to develop infections that are difficult to cure. Now scientists have made a promising discovery that could help solve this problem. Instead of creating entirely new antibiotics researchers have found a way to make existing antibiotics work again. The new approach uses special compounds called antibiotic adjuvants. These compounds do not kill bacteria on their own. Instead they help antibiotics become effective again by weakening the bacteria’s defenses. Researchers at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) in the United States discovered a compound called PGHI-4. When they combined it with the powerful antibiotic vancomycin it successfully killed bacteria that had already become resistant to vancomycin. Vancomycin is commonly used to treat serious bacterial infections including those caused by MRSA and Clostridioides difficile (C. diff.). Over time however some bacteria developed resistance to this important medicine making treatment much more difficult. During laboratory tests, scientists found that PGHI-4 blocks an important bacterial enzyme called SagA. Without this enzyme the bacteria’s protective cell wall becomes weaker allowing vancomycin to destroy the bacteria once again. The treatment was especially successful against drug resistant Enterococcus faecium a bacterium known for causing difficult hospital infections. Professor John Moses of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory said the discovery was the result of years of chemistry research. He explained that the newly found compound blocks an enzyme that helps bacteria resist antibiotics opening the door to more effective treatments. The research team also used a modern chemical method called Diversity Oriented Clicking (DOC) to create a library of more than 150 chemical compounds. Scientists believe this technique could speed up the discovery of new medicines, not only for antibiotic resistant infections but also for diseases such as cancer. Experts say that if future studies confirm these results the same strategy could eventually help treat other dangerous drug resistant infections including tuberculosis (TB). Doctors also warn that the misuse and overuse of antibiotics have made antibiotic resistance much worse. They advise people to take antibiotics only when prescribed by a doctor and to always complete the full course of treatment. This helps reduce the chances of bacteria becoming resistant to medicines. Scientists say this research is an important reminder that many of the biggest medical breakthroughs begin in laboratories where new discoveries can lead to better treatments and save lives in the future.

    The rise of Alfred, Lord Tennyson

    On August 6, 1809, one of the defining literary voices of the 19th century was born: Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Tennyson came to embody the doubts, solemnity, and romantic ideals of the Victorian era. He served as Britain’s Poet Laureate for more than four decades during the height of Queen Victoria’s reign. Early Brilliance and Sharp Criticism Tennyson’s journey to becoming a beloved national figure was anything but smooth. Raised in a large, tumultuous household by a clergyman father, young Alfred sought escape through verse. His talents surfaced early; while studying at Cambridge, he won the prestigious Chancellor’s Gold Medal in 1829 for his poem Timbuktu. Shortly thereafter, he published early collections containing works such as Mariana and Claribel. These early publications showcased his extraordinary musicality and eye for detail, yet contemporary critics were not entirely impressed. Severe reviews dismissed his work as overly melancholic, affected, and sentimental. The hostility of these early critiques shook Tennyson deeply, prompting a decade-long period of publishing silence. A phase scholars often refer to as his ten years’ silence. Crafting the Masterpieces Rather than abandoning his craft, Tennyson spent those quiet years refining his technique, studying philosophy, and confronting personal tragedy. The sudden death of his closest friend, Arthur Henry Hallam, plunged Tennyson into profound grief. This loss became the catalyst for his most famous masterpiece, In Memoriam A.H.H. Published in 1850, the massive elegy explored faith, mortality, and scientific progress, striking a deep chord with a Victorian public navigating rapid industrialization and societal change. The immense success of In Memoriam transformed his standing almost overnight. That same year, following the death of William Wordsworth, Queen Victoria appointed Tennyson as Poet Laureate. He went on to compose iconic works that defined the national consciousness, including The Charge of the Light Brigade, Ulysses, and his epic Arthurian cycle, Idylls of the King. A Lasting Literary Legacy While early critics painted him as a sentimentalist, history remembers Tennyson as a master craftsman of English rhythm and sound. Lines like; “To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield” (Ulysses) have woven themselves permanently into the modern lexicon. His ability to blend intimate personal emotion with grand societal themes elevated him from a criticized young poet to an enduring pillar of world literature.     Robot phone launch date announced for August 12

    Beijing – A Chinese company is set to introduce what is being described as the world’s first robot phone and its unique feature is likely to surprise many people. Robots are gradually becoming part of everyday human life and now a Chinese company has announced the launch of its first robot phone. According to foreign media reports, the company will launch the phone in China on August 12. Its most distinctive feature is its camera which is not fixed like the camera on a conventional smartphone. The phone features a unique robotic camera system that can rotate while recording videos offering movements similar to those of a professional camera. In addition, a special camera module is installed on the top of the phone. It can pop out when needed and rotate in different directions. The phone’s camera system does more than simply move. It also uses artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically track a person or object in front of it. Similarly, if someone is walking or recording a video, the camera can automatically follow their movements. This can make video recording smoother and give the footage a more cinematic appearance. The Chinese company has confirmed that the robot phone will feature a triple rear-camera setup. Its primary camera will have a resolution of 200 megapixels. This means the phone will not only be capable of taking high-resolution photos but will also be able to capture better images of objects from a distance.
