New breakthrough against superbugs

Bacteria that cause infections are becoming harder to treat because many of them no longer respond to common antibiotics.

These bacteria known as superbugs have developed resistance to medicines that once killed them easily.  As a result infections that were once simple to treat are becoming much more dangerous.

Health experts say that every year thousands of people die from antibiotic resistant infections.

This growing problem also makes surgeries cancer treatments and many hospital procedures riskier because patients are more likely to develop infections that are difficult to cure.

Now scientists have made a promising discovery that could help solve this problem.

Instead of creating entirely new antibiotics researchers have found a way to make existing antibiotics work again.

The new approach uses special compounds called antibiotic adjuvants. These compounds do not kill bacteria on their own.

Instead they help antibiotics become effective again by weakening the bacteria’s defenses.

Researchers at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) in the United States discovered a compound called PGHI-4.

When they combined it with the powerful antibiotic vancomycin it successfully killed bacteria that had already become resistant to vancomycin.

Vancomycin is commonly used to treat serious bacterial infections including those caused by MRSA and Clostridioides difficile (C. diff.).

Over time however some bacteria developed resistance to this important medicine making treatment much more difficult.

During laboratory tests, scientists found that PGHI-4 blocks an important bacterial enzyme called SagA. Without this enzyme the bacteria’s protective cell wall becomes weaker allowing vancomycin to destroy the bacteria once again.

The treatment was especially successful against drug resistant Enterococcus faecium a bacterium known for causing difficult hospital infections.

Professor John Moses of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory said the discovery was the result of years of chemistry research.

He explained that the newly found compound blocks an enzyme that helps bacteria resist antibiotics opening the door to more effective treatments.

The research team also used a modern chemical method called Diversity Oriented Clicking (DOC) to create a library of more than 150 chemical compounds.

Scientists believe this technique could speed up the discovery of new medicines, not only for antibiotic resistant infections but also for diseases such as cancer.

Experts say that if future studies confirm these results the same strategy could eventually help treat other dangerous drug resistant infections including tuberculosis (TB).

Doctors also warn that the misuse and overuse of antibiotics have made antibiotic resistance much worse.

They advise people to take antibiotics only when prescribed by a doctor and to always complete the full course of treatment.

This helps reduce the chances of bacteria becoming resistant to medicines. Scientists say this research is an important reminder that many of the biggest medical breakthroughs begin in laboratories where new discoveries can lead to better treatments and save lives in the future.

    Echoes of 1971 in Pakistan’s Kashmir policy

    History rarely repeats itself in exact terms, but it frequently rhymes through patterns of power, dissent and state responses. In Pakistan, analysts and political observers are increasingly highlighting the parallels between historical missteps. It is specifically the events leading up to the loss of East Pakistan in 1971 and the contemporary public grievances in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The Cost of Ignoring Electoral Mandates In 1970, General Yahya Khan permitted general elections across Pakistan. The Awami League in East Pakistan secured a decisive democratic victory by winning 162 out of 300 national seats. However, rather than facilitating a peaceful transfer of power, military leaders stalled negotiations in Dhaka through early 1971. This breakdown in dialogue culminated in Operation Searchlight, a military crackdown targeting intellectuals, students, and Bengali civilians. The resulting violence triggered a massive refugee crisis. Approximately ten million people were sent to India. A war that ultimately led to the creation of Bangladesh. Pakistan’s own Hamoodur Rahman Commission concluded that political failure and operational excess by military leadership were central to the catastrophe. Despite these official findings, the report remained suppressed for decades, leaving fundamental lessons about the dangers of military overreach largely unexamined within state institutions.  Unrest in Pakistan-Controlled Kashmir Today, army leadership under General Asim Munir continues to champion strong nationalistic rhetoric regarding Kashmir. He has been asserting it as the nation’s core and a willingness to fight further conflicts over Indian-administered territory. Yet, a  different internal dynamic has been evolving since 2025 within the territories Pakistan actually controls. Local populations have mobilized in widespread demonstrations driven by clear economic and political grievances. Unmanageable costs for basic essential goods. Disproportionately high pricing for local power distribution. Legislative structures that assign disproportionate authority to mainland administrators rather than local residents. State institutions responded with heavy-handed measures rather than operating for meaningful negotiation. The organizing groups were banned, communication blackouts were implemented and arrests occurred. Security forces deployed live fire against demonstrators  and caused dozens of civilian casualties. The Danger of Ignoring Unheard Grievances The concern raised by historians is not that history will reproduce the exact outcome of 1971, but that the state is relying on the same flawed logic. State is again attempting to suppress domestic economic and political grievances through state force. When state policy prioritizes coercion over political engagement, it risks alienating populations. The lingering question for Pakistan’s establishment is whether the lessons of past governance failures will finally be integrated, or whether suppressed grievances will once again lead to deep institutional crises.

Experts also highlight that the monsoon season itself is not dangerous. The real risk comes from ignoring existing health conditions. Keeping blood pressure diabetes cholesterol and heart diseases under control throughout the year can greatly reduce the risk of stroke and other complications.

    Pakistan names first lunar rover “Jinnah-1”

    Islamabad: The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has officially announced the name of Pakistan’s first lunar rover. According to SUPARCO, Pakistan’s first lunar rover has been named “Jinnah-1.” The name was selected from suggestions submitted through a nationwide competition. More than 4,000 proposals were received from across the country. SUPARCO stated that seven participants had suggested the name “Jinnah-1.” The winner was selected through a lucky draw and 17-year-old Tayyab Karim from Bahawalnagar was declared the winner for proposing the name. Tribute to Quaid-e-Azam The Chairman of SUPARCO said that “Jinnah-1” is a tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He added that the name represents Pakistan’s determination, progress and pursuit of new frontiers in space exploration. It is worth mentioning that Pakistan’s first lunar rover is scheduled to be sent to the Moon in 2029 as part of China’s Chang’e-8 mission. The Jinnah-1 rover will conduct scientific research on the Moon’s south pole.

  • Humans may live up to 194 Years

    How long can a human live? No one knows the exact answer but scientists believe there is a natural limit to the human lifespan. According to a study a person could possibly live as long as 194 years although reaching that age would be extremely rare. Researchers say living forever is not possible. Even if science discovers new ways to slow aging the body cannot avoid the natural damage that builds up over time. The study published in the journal Nature looked at how our DNA and genes change throughout life. Scientists found that many genetic changes are harmless but some damage cells and reduce how well they work. Over time this damage increases the risk of age related diseases. The researchers explained that these genetic changes cannot be completely prevented.  They happen naturally when cells divide and can also be caused by viruses certain chemicals and ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight. To estimate the maximum human lifespan the team created a scientific model that included reversible signs of aging while keeping permanent genetic changes in place. The results suggested that even if future technology slows the aging process the longest a human could live would likely be between 146 and 194 years. Scientists also noted that some organs such as the skin and liver regularly replace old cells helping repair some damage. However the heart and brain do not replace most of their cells making genetic damage in these organs much harder to reverse. The researchers stressed that genetic changes are not always harmful but as they build up over time they may gradually shorten a person’s lifespan. They also believe that other biological processes may affect aging and more research is needed to better understand them. At present the longest confirmed human lifespan belongs to Jeanne Calment of France who died in 1997 at the age of 122 years making her the oldest verified person in recorded history.
