PPL strikes 1st-ever Chiltan formation gas find in…

KARACHI: Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has announced a significant hydrocarbon discovery at its operated Sarani Block in Sindh’s Sujawal district, opening fresh prospects for exploration in the country’s shallow offshore and swampy onshore regions.

The discovery was made at the Dolphin X-1 exploratory well, where PPL identified hydrocarbons in the Chiltan Formation of the Lower Indus Basin. The company described it as the first reported hydrocarbon discovery from the Jurassic-age Chiltan Formation in the basin.

PPL said the find could expand exploration opportunities in adjoining shallow offshore areas and strengthen the hydrocarbon potential of Pakistan’s low-depth marine zones. The region had remained largely unexplored for years because of its challenging geological and geographical conditions.

Drilling of Dolphin X-1 began on April 17, 2026, with the well reaching a measured depth of 3,850 metres to evaluate the hydrocarbon potential of the Chiltan Formation. Analysis of drilling results and wireline logs subsequently identified a hydrocarbon-bearing zone.

During testing, the well produced gas from the Chiltan Formation at a rate of 0.942 million standard cubic feet per day. The gas recorded a heating value of 1,000 British thermal units per standard cubic foot, with a wellhead flowing pressure of 211 pounds per square inch gauge through a 64/32-inch choke.

PPL holds a 75 per cent working interest in the Sarani Block and serves as its operator, while Government Holdings (Private) Limited owns the remaining 25 per cent stake.

The company said the well was drilled and tested using the expertise of its technical teams. The results have led to the identification of a new hydrocarbon play within the Chiltan Limestone, potentially providing a foundation for further exploration in the surrounding onshore and shallow offshore areas.

Indian celebrities voice support for Cockroach Janta Party protests

A growing number of prominent Indian celebrities and public figures have publicly voiced their solidarity with the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests, amplifying the movement’s demands for educational reform, transparency, and youth empowerment. What began as a viral, satirical social media campaign addressing systemic issues like exam irregularities and widespread unemployment has rapidly evolved into a major political and cultural phenomenon across the nation. In recent days, several high-profile figures from the entertainment industry have used their platforms to condemn the harsh government response to peaceful student demonstrators at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Actor Sonu Sood called for compassion and understanding from authorities, emphasizing that young students require supportive hands rather than force. Meanwhile, actor and comedian Vir Das urged fellow artists and performers not to remain silent, highlighting the hypocrisy of relying on young audiences for ticket sales while failing to stand up for their rights during moments of crisis. Joining the chorus of support, actor Dia Mirza strongly criticized the use of police force against peaceful marchers, expressing her distress over reports of harsh measures used against students and citizens demanding accountability. Actors Aditi Rao Hydari and Soha Ali Khan also shared messages advocating for constructive dialogue, dignity, and the fundamental right to peaceful protest, framing the issue as an urgent matter of human welfare and youth rights rather than partisan politics. Veteran actor Prakash Raj went a step further by physically joining demonstrators on the ground in Delhi, addressing crowds alongside activists and waving the Indian Constitution to demand accountability from political leadership. Raj openly challenged the broader film industry’s hesitation to speak up, noting that public judgment will fall on those who choose to remain silent during critical moments of youth struggle. The CJP movement—initially launched by digital activist Abhijeet Dipke—has resonated deeply with millions of young Indians frustrated by entrance exam scandals, job scarcity, and administrative indifference. Despite facing account suspensions, digital censorship, and heavy security measures at protest sites, the movement continues to build significant momentum both online and in public spaces. With influential cultural figures now lending their voices to the cause, the student-driven agitation has successfully pushed youth issues to the center of national debate.

Trump rebukes CNN reporter over aide question

The White House has criticised CNN reporter Kristen Holmes after she questioned US President Donald Trump about his relationship with executive assistant Natalie Harp. The confrontation took place during an Oval Office event on Monday honouring 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams, who recently rescued a child from dangerous ocean swells off California. Holmes asked Trump about remarks made by Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff, who had recently referred to Harp during a campaign speech. The question drew a sharp response from the White House, which accused the reporter of using an event honouring a young hero to raise an unrelated political issue. Trump also confronted Holmes when she later asked a question about North Korea. He called her “very disrespectful” and told her to remain quiet, accusing her of being “fake news.” The White House’s Rapid Response team separately criticised Holmes on social media, describing her question as inappropriate and directing strong personal remarks at the journalist. CNN strongly defended Holmes and condemned the White House’s response. The network said the attacks were inappropriate and “beneath the office” of the presidency. It also said it stood firmly behind its reporter. The dispute comes amid increased public attention surrounding Harp, a former television news personality who has become a prominent member of Trump’s staff. She is frequently seen accompanying the president and has gained attention for regularly providing him with printed information, earning her the nickname “human printer.” Harp was also reportedly among a small group of aides present during a secret Air Force One aircraft change in July, prompting speculation and discussion online. Ossoff recently criticised Trump over his focus on a planned $400 million White House ballroom and his association with Harp. Trump dismissed the senator’s remarks and attacked him personally while defending the ballroom project. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung also criticised Ossoff, calling him a political loser. The latest clash adds to growing tensions between the Trump administration and journalists, particularly female reporters who have faced public criticism from the president and his allies.

    Kuwait welcomes Pakistan-Saudi-Türkiye Makkah def…

ISLAMABAD: Kuwait has congratulated Pakistan on the signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, signalling growing regional interest in the new security arrangement. Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar received a telephone call from Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah late on Sunday, during which the two officials discussed the agreement as well as the wider regional situation. According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the Kuwaiti foreign minister felicitated Dar on the agreement signed in Makkah on Friday. The two ministers also exchanged views on developments in the region, including the situation in occupied East Jerusalem. Their conversation also covered bilateral relations and ways to expand cooperation between Pakistan and Kuwait, particularly in investment and other key sectors. The officials also discussed follow-up to Sheikh Jarrah’s recent visit to Pakistan. “The two sides agreed to remain closely engaged,” the Foreign Office said. The development comes as Pakistan continues to explain the objectives and scope of the landmark defence pact, which brings Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye closer together on security matters. Dar has stressed that the agreement is defensive in nature and is not directed against any particular country. Under the pact, an armed attack against any one of the three signatories would be treated as an attack against all three. The foreign minister said the arrangement was designed to strengthen collective deterrence while supporting regional peace, stability and security. He also maintained that the agreement was consistent with the right of individual and collective self-defence recognised under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. Importantly, Dar clarified that the Makkah agreement does not replace or cancel existing bilateral or multilateral defence arrangements involving the three countries. The pact could also have a broader regional dimension. Dar said the agreement remains open to other countries in the region that are willing to respect its principles and resolve differences through dialogue, cooperation and peaceful means. His comments came amid reports that Egypt could potentially join the arrangement. Earlier, Dar also spoke with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, with the two officials discussing regional developments and the newly signed agreement. Pakistan has presented the Makkah accord as part of its broader foreign-policy objective of promoting regional stability and peaceful conflict resolution. With Kuwait now extending its congratulations, attention is increasingly turning to how the new defence framework could influence cooperation and security across the wider region.
