Lahore ranked among the world’s dafest major…

Lahore: Pakistan’s cultural capital has earned international recognition after being ranked among the world’s safest major cities in the 2026 Numbeo Crime and Safety Index. The latest report shows that Lahore recorded one of the lowest crime index scores among several globally recognized metropolitan areas, reflecting continued improvements in public safety and law enforcement.

According to the 2026 rankings, Lahore outperformed a number of major international cities in terms of safety. The city ranked ahead of Karachi, New Delhi, Paris, London, Washington, New York, and Mexico City, highlighting its growing reputation as a comparatively secure urban centre. The results suggest that residents and visitors perceive Lahore as offering a safer environment than many other large cities included in the global survey.

The report also indicates measurable progress over the past year. Lahore’s crime index declined from 36.8 in mid-2025 to 36.2 in mid-2026, while its safety index improved from 63.2 to 63.8during the same period. A lower crime index reflects reduced concerns about criminal activity, while a higher safety index indicates increased public confidence in personal security and the overall law-and-order situation.

The improvement in these indicators demonstrates a positive trend for the city, suggesting that ongoing efforts to enhance public safety have produced encouraging results. Although no major city is completely free of crime, Lahore’s steady progress has strengthened its position among the safer urban centres included in the international rankings.

Deputy Inspector General (Operations) Muhammad Faisal Kamran welcomed the report, saying the improved ranking reflects the Lahore Police’s continued commitment to maintaining peace and protecting citizens. According to the senior police official, the department has implemented a range of security measures designed to reduce crime, improve emergency response, and strengthen law enforcement across the provincial capital.

He noted that increased police patrols, intelligence-based operations, the use of surveillance technology, and closer coordination between law enforcement agencies have all contributed to improving the city’s security environment. Authorities have also focused on enhancing community policing initiatives, encouraging greater cooperation between residents and police to help prevent criminal activities.

Officials believe that these efforts have not only improved public confidence but have also made Lahore a more attractive destination for business, tourism, and investment. A safer urban environment is considered an important factor in promoting economic growth, encouraging commercial activity, and improving the overall quality of life for residents.

The Numbeo Crime and Safety Index is widely referenced for comparing perceptions of crime and safety across cities around the world. The rankings are based on user-contributed data and reflect public perceptions of crime levels, personal safety during the day and at night, concerns about violent and property crimes, and confidence in local law enforcement.

While authorities welcomed the latest ranking, they emphasized that efforts to improve security will continue. Police officials said they remain committed to further reducing crime through modern policing strategies, technological innovation, and stronger public engagement.

Lahore’s improved standing in the 2026 Numbeo Crime and Safety Index represents a significant achievement for the city. The latest figures highlight continued progress in public safety and reinforce Lahore’s growing reputation as one of the safer major cities in the world, while authorities pledge to build on these gains in the years ahead.

PAC flags Rs19bn BISP payment irregularities

A subcommittee of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has raised concerns over financial irregularities in the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) after audit officials revealed that more than Rs19 billion was paid outside the beneficiaries’ respective provinces or districts. The meeting was chaired by subcommittee convener Moeen Aamir Pirzada. Members reviewed a series of audit objections related to BISP covering the financial years from 2010-11 to 2022-23. During the briefing, audit officials informed the committee that payments worth over Rs19 billion had been made in locations different from the beneficiaries’ registered districts or provinces. The audit team said the transactions required further scrutiny to determine whether they resulted from administrative weaknesses, verification gaps or possible misuse of the programme. Committee members expressed concern over the findings and stressed the need for stronger monitoring and accountability in the country’s largest social welfare programme. They said public funds intended for deserving families must be distributed through a transparent and well-monitored system. The subcommittee examined the audit observations in detail and sought explanations from the relevant BISP officials regarding the irregular payments. Officials were asked to clarify how such payments were processed and whether adequate checks were in place to prevent similar cases. The committee also discussed measures to improve the verification process, strengthen oversight and ensure that future payments are made only to eligible beneficiaries through proper channels. Members emphasized that any financial irregularities should be investigated thoroughly and those responsible should be held accountable.

Avatar: Seven Havens gets October premiere date

The Avatar universe is expanding in a bold and dramatic new direction. Paramount+ has unveiled the first teaser for Avatar: Seven Havens, a new animated series set in a world shattered by catastrophe, and confirmed that the show will premiere on October 9, 2026. The teaser is dark, atmospheric and immediately striking in tone, a significant departure from the warmth and adventure that characterised the original Avatar: The Last Airbender. What it offers instead is a world in ruins, a new Avatar burdened by a deeply complicated legacy, and a story that promises to push the franchise into grittier and more urgent territory. The October 9 date itself carries a certain significance. It had originally been earmarked for the release of Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, a separate project within the franchise, before that film’s schedule shifted following an online leak. Seven Havens has now stepped into that slot. The series follows a young earthbender who discovers she is the new Avatar after Korra, emerging in a world that has been devastated by a cataclysmic event. In this dangerous and fractured era, being the Avatar is not a source of hope or admiration for those around her. It marks her instead as a figure of fear, seen by many as humanity’s destroyer rather than its saviour. Hunted by both human and spirit enemies, she and her long-lost twin must uncover the truth about their origins and find a way to save the Seven Havens before the last remaining strongholds of civilisation collapse entirely. The cast assembled for the series is a strong one. Saheli Khan leads as Pavi, joined by Aishu Devan as Nisha, Akshay Khanna as Karthik, Major Curda as Jae, Sakina Jaffrey as Agam, Darren Barnet as Daemin, Dianne Doan as Zi, and Dee Bradley Baker, the beloved voice of Appa and Momo from the original series, voicing Geet and Ruhi. The show follows the two-book structure familiar to fans of the original series, with 26 episodes ordered in total, each book comprising 13 episodes. Avatar Studios and Nickelodeon are producing the series, with original franchise creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko serving as executive producers alongside director Ethan Spaulding and co-executive producer Sehaj Sethi. The original Avatar: The Last Airbender, which first aired in 2005, is widely regarded as one of the greatest animated series ever made. It was followed by The Legend of Korra in 2012. Seven Havens now continues that legacy into a darker and more complex chapter, and if the teaser is any indication, it has every intention of earning its place in that company.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day star Jacob Batalon revea…

Jacob Batalon is shining a spotlight on one of the most talked-about additions to Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The actor, who reprises his beloved role as Ned Leeds, recently opened up about the film’s innovative “Spidey Tracker” and explained why the feature perfectly reflects his character’s personality. Speaking to People magazine, Batalon shared that Ned’s intelligence has always been one of his defining qualities, making the new technology a natural extension of his journey.  “I think what’s really cool about Ned is that they never really lost his intelligence,” Batalon said during the interview. Since making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Ned has been known as Peter Parker’s trusted “guy in the chair,” using his technical skills to help Spider-Man behind the scenes. Even after the emotional events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the latest film continues to showcase Ned’s sharp mind in a fresh and exciting way.  In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Ned develops the Spidey Tracker, an app designed to help locate Spider-Man across New York City. Ironically, because of Doctor Strange’s memory spell in No Way Home, Ned no longer remembers that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. As a result, he unknowingly spends his time tracking his former best friend without realizing their shared history. The emotional twist adds another layer to the character while staying true to the franchise’s ongoing storyline.  Beyond its role in the movie, the Spidey Tracker has also become a real-world experience for fans. Sony Pictures and Samsung partnered to launch an interactive version of the tracker, allowing fans to follow Spider-Man-themed events, explore global sightings, and connect with the film’s promotional campaign. Batalon praised the collaboration, saying Samsung’s foldable devices fit perfectly with Ned’s tech-loving personality and made the fictional app feel even more believable.  The actor also reflected on how much the Spider-Man franchise has meant to him over the past decade. Batalon expressed gratitude for growing alongside Tom Holland and Zendaya, describing his co-stars as family. He said the films not only shaped his career but also allowed him to build lasting friendships both on and off the screen.  Ned has long been a fan favorite because of his humor, loyalty, and intelligence, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to build on those strengths. Rather than changing who the character is, the new film gives him another opportunity to showcase the skills that audiences have loved since 2017. With the Spidey Tracker serving as both a clever story element and an engaging fan experience, Batalon believes the feature captures everything that makes Ned special. As Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues its successful theatrical run, Batalon’s latest comments offer fans a deeper appreciation for one of the franchise’s most relatable characters. His enthusiasm for Ned’s evolution suggests there is still plenty of room for the character to grow in future Marvel adventures.

Global food prices hit three-year high in July

Global food prices reached their highest level in three years in July. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said global food prices rose significantly due to weather conditions and the Iran-US war reaching a three-year high. The FAO Food Price Index tracks monthly changes in international prices of major food commodities. According to the index, global food prices rose to 131.1 points in July compared with 130.3 points in June. This was the highest level recorded since January 2023. The FAO’s chief economist had told a news agency in recent days that the world was once again facing food price inflation due to the wars in Iran and Ukraine as well as the El Niño climate phenomenon which can affect crop production. El Niño is a climate pattern in which a large part of the Pacific Ocean becomes unusually warm contributing to an increase in global temperatures. According to the international organization, wheat prices increased by 5.8% resulting in an overall 3.4% increase in commodity prices. Wheat exports through the Black Sea were affected while rising temperatures disrupted crop production in major wheat-growing regions. The FAO Vegetable Oil Price Index increased by 2% reaching its highest level since June 2022. Vegetable oil prices rose due to the Iran war and increased demand for biodiesel. Sugar prices increased by 5.6% amid weather-related concerns in Europe and Asia. However, meat prices declined by 2.8%.

Houthis claim missile and drone attack on Saudi oil tankers

Yemen’s Houthi movement has claimed responsibility for attacking two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, marking a major escalation in regional tensions and raising fresh concerns over the security of one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group targeted the tankers, identified as ENCELA and LAYLIA, because they allegedly violated the maritime blockade the Houthis imposed on Saudi Arabia earlier this week. According to the spokesperson, the operation involved ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones. He claimed the strikes caused fires aboard both vessels and forced nearly 10 other commercial ships to abandon their planned routes and turn back. Saudi authorities have not officially commented on the Houthi claims. However, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which monitors maritime security in the region, confirmed receiving a report from the captain of a tanker that an unidentified projectile had struck the vessel, sparking a fire. The crew managed to respond to the incident, and no casualties or environmental damage have been reported. The attack comes just days after the Houthis announced a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia, saying the move was retaliation for recent military actions in Yemen. The group accused Riyadh of maintaining a long-standing blockade on areas under Houthi control and vowed to respond with similar measures at sea. The latest developments have increased fears over shipping through the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a strategic waterway linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. The route is vital for global energy supplies and international trade, carrying millions of barrels of crude oil and petroleum products every day. Shipping security in the region has already been under pressure because of wider Middle East tensions. Any prolonged disruption in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait could further affect global oil markets, increase transport costs and delay commercial shipping.
