Over 33,000 candidates to appear for MDCAT in Sind…

More than 33,000 candidates will appear for the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) in Sindh as students compete for 5,100 medical and dental seats across the province. The entrance examination for admission to medical colleges will be held on Sunday, August 16, across various centres in Sindh.

The MDCAT examination in the province will be conducted under the supervision of Sukkur IBA Testing Service. According to Vice Chancellor Sukkur IBA Professor Dr Asif Sheikh, more than 33,000 candidates are expected to participate in the test, including 20,934 female candidates and over 12,600 male candidates.

Vice Chancellor Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) Dr Siraj Memon stated that a total of 5,100 seats have been allocated for medical education in Sindh. These include 2,300 MBBS seats and 2,800 BDS seats, including seats reserved under different quota categories.

This year, the responsibility for managing medical college admissions has been assigned to Jinnah Sindh Medical University. The university will oversee the admission process following the MDCAT results.

Karachi will have the highest number of candidates appearing for the examination, with 10,661 students registered. Among them, 8,186 are female candidates and 2,475 are male candidates. Other major examination centres include Hyderabad, where 9,470 candidates will participate, including 5,287 female and 4,183 male students.

In addition, 3,066 candidates will appear in Larkana, 2,067 in Mirpurkhas, 2,511 in Shaheed Benazirabad, and 5,462 in Sukkur. An additional examination centre has also been established in Islamabad, where 300 candidates will take part.

The MDCAT centre in Karachi will be established at NED University. Special seating arrangements have been made for parents at the adjacent banquet facility. Candidates have been instructed to reach their examination centres by 6:30 a.m., while the test will begin at 10:00 a.m.

The MDCAT will consist of multiple-choice questions carrying a total of 180 marks, with a duration of three hours. Candidates seeking admission to medical colleges will require a minimum of 55 percent marks, while dental college applicants must secure at least 50 percent marks. There will be no negative marking in the examination.

Sukkur IBA officials stated that the answer key will be uploaded after the test. To ensure transparency, students will be allowed to solve the paper using a carbon copy, which they can keep for verification purposes. The MDCAT results are expected to be announced by August 22.

Federal Finance Minister confirmed the development, describing it as a timely boost for Pakistan’s economy. The financial support, which was initially arranged to help Pakistan meet its payment obligations to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), was originally granted for a three-month period. With the extension now in place, Pakistan has gained additional fiscal breathing space as it continues to manage its external liabilities and strengthen foreign exchange reserves. Officials at the State Bank of Pakistan said the rollover of external financial support, amounting to $5 billion in total, has further reinforced the country’s foreign exchange position while easing short-term external payment obligations. According to government officials, Saudi Arabia currently holds $8 billion in deposits with Pakistan. They added that Pakistan had secured the $3 billion facility from the Kingdom in April this year. For the fiscal year 2026–27, Pakistan’s external financing requirement has declined to $21.5 billion, reflecting an improvement in the country’s financial outlook. Officials also noted that interest payments on foreign debt have fallen by nearly half a billion dollars, helping reduce the overall debt-servicing burden. The State Bank further revealed that Pakistan repaid $2.2 billion in external loans during July. Despite these repayments, Saudi Arabia’s decision to extend the loan has provided a crucial financial cushion, supporting economic stability and strengthening investor confidence.

    At least three people lost their lives and three others were injured in rain-related incidents across Punjab as heavy monsoon showers triggered urban flooding, damaged homes, and disrupted daily life in several cities. According to the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), one man died and another person was injured after a house collapsed in Uch Sharif, Bahawalpur district. Two additional people sustained injuries in separate roof collapse incidents reported in Mandi Bahauddin and Lodhran. The PDMA also confirmed damage to at least one house in Bahawalpur. Officials clarified that nine other deaths reported on the same day were not directly linked to rain or flooding. These incidents included drownings in canals and rivers in Kot Addu, Narowal, and Attock, while four children tragically died of suffocation after becoming trapped inside a parked vehicle in Mianwali. PDMA Director General Saif Anwar Jappa directed deputy commissioners across Punjab to remain on high alert as heavy rainfall is forecast to continue. He said Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is personally monitoring the situation and has instructed district administrations, Rescue 1122, Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa), and other departments to remain fully prepared for emergencies. Lahore experienced several hours of intense rainfall, leaving many roads and residential areas submerged. Water levels reached up to 23 inches in some areas, prompting Wasa teams to continue dewatering operations throughout the day. Heavy rainfall also affected Gujrat and Mandi Bahauddin, where roads were inundated and drainage operations remained underway. In contrast, Jhelum recorded only light rainfall, and officials reported that all waterlogging points had been cleared by the afternoon. Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, stay away from electricity poles and damaged buildings, and keep children away from floodwater and fast-flowing canals as monsoon conditions persist across the province.
