Federal Shariat Court to hear challenge to under-1…

ISLAMABAD: A legal challenge to Punjab’s recently enacted law criminalising marriages involving individuals under the age of 18 has moved forward after the Federal Shariat Court cleared procedural objections and directed that the petition be fixed for hearing.

The petition, filed by Mufti Muhammad Aslam through his counsel Mudassar Chaudhry Advocate, questions key provisions of the Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Act 2026. The Governor of Punjab, through the provincial secretary, and other relevant authorities have been named as respondents in the case.

According to the petition, Sections 2(d), 2(c) and other provisions of the law are inconsistent with the Constitution and Islamic principles. The petitioner argues that declaring marriages involving individuals under the age of 18 as a criminal offence is contrary to Shariah and contends that the state has no authority to interfere in matters governed by Islamic law.

The petitioner has requested the court to declare the provisions prescribing criminal penalties for under-18 marriages unlawful and strike down the disputed sections of the Act. The plea also seeks a stay on the implementation of the law until the Federal Shariat Court reaches a final decision.

The case had initially faced a procedural objection because it challenged an ordinance that has since been passed by the Punjab Assembly and enacted as law. After the legislation was formally approved, the petitioner amended the plea to challenge the Act instead of the ordinance and resubmitted it before the court.

Following the amendment, the Registrar of the Federal Shariat Court removed the objection and ordered that the matter be scheduled for hearing before the bench.

The upcoming proceedings are expected to attract significant legal and public attention, as they concern the interpretation of child marriage laws, constitutional provisions and Islamic jurisprudence. The court’s eventual ruling could have important implications for the implementation of the Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Act 2026 and the broader debate surrounding the legal age of marriage in Pakistan.

Until the court hears the matter, the law remains in force unless a stay order is granted during subsequent proceedings.

Major US financial firms targeted in extensive phone-phishing campaign

Ransom-seeking cybercriminals have launched a coordinated campaign targeting high-profile US financial institutions, including Blackstone, Apollo Global Management, KKR, Bain Capital, and CME Group. A technical report from Google’s Threat Intelligence Group revealed that hackers created 72 malicious websites designed to steal corporate login credentials. Operatives used social engineering tactics, reaching employees directly on personal mobile phones while spoofing corporate IT helpdesk numbers. Under the guise of urgent system updates, callers guided staff to fraudulent domains such as “passkeyhelpdesk” or “secure-passkey” to capture login credentials and multi-factor authentication passcodes in real time. According to threat intelligence analysis, the campaign represents a strategic pivot toward private equity firms, law practices, and financial rating agencies, driven by the assessment that these targets hold sensitive commercial data worth paying substantial ransoms to protect. While digital intelligence data identified fake portals created for over 200 organisations, including Uber, Levi Strauss, and several major law firms, it remains unconfirmed which specific financial targets experienced compromised systems. The threat actors operating under names such as Redact, Falcon, Helix, and Pink share common digital infrastructure. Analysts noted that despite advanced enterprise perimeter security, direct voice-phishing techniques exploiting human trust continue to rank among the most effective cyber-intrusion vectors.

US, Saudi forces strike Iran allies in Iraq

The conflict involving Iran, the United States and its regional allies has entered a new and more dangerous phase, with fresh military strikes reported across the Middle East. US and Saudi forces carried out coordinated airstrikes against Iran-aligned armed groups in eastern Iraq, according to US Central Command (CENTCOM). The operation came after a series of drone attacks that Washington and Riyadh attributed to groups linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). CENTCOM said American and Saudi fighter jets targeted weapons and logistics facilities used by the armed groups. The US military claimed the groups had carried out more than 30 IRGC-directed drone attacks in recent days, including strikes targeting Saudi energy infrastructure. Saudi Arabia also confirmed the operation, saying its forces acted alongside CENTCOM after drones were launched from Iraqi territory toward petroleum facilities in the kingdom’s Eastern Province and Riyadh region. Riyadh said it did not seek a wider escalation but warned that it would respond to further attacks. The latest strikes were followed by an explosion at the headquarters of Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) in Basra. The PMF is an umbrella organisation containing several armed factions, including groups closely aligned with Iran. The cause of the blast and any casualties were not immediately confirmed. Meanwhile, tensions escalated further after the US military reported that Iran had launched multiple ballistic missiles toward American military positions in Jordan. CENTCOM said the missiles were intercepted and that US forces remained on heightened alert. Iranian authorities had not immediately issued an official statement regarding the missile launches. However, an Iranian military official rejected claims that Tehran was responsible for projectiles fired toward Saudi Arabia, warning that attributing attacks on US interests to Iran could be a serious miscalculation. The developments threaten to derail diplomatic efforts aimed at containing the conflict. Iran has repeatedly warned that any attempt to restrict its control over the Strait of Hormuz could trigger a renewed military confrontation. The latest escalation also comes as US President Donald Trump met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Their discussions reportedly focused on Iran and the possibility of renewed military action

Secret Service probes alleged leak of JD Vance tra…

WASHINGTON: A member of US Vice President JD Vance’s security detail is under investigation over allegations that sensitive information related to the vice president’s travel arrangements was leaked to the media, raising concerns about security protocols surrounding one of the country’s highest-ranking officials. The US Secret Service confirmed on Friday that an administrative investigation is underway into the conduct of an officer assigned to Vance’s protective unit. Officials said the inquiry could potentially lead to a criminal investigation depending on the findings. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said the agency takes any breach of operational security seriously and would not tolerate actions that could compromise the safety of protected government officials. “The Secret Service maintains strict standards regarding operational and informational security,” Guglielmi said in a statement. “Any violation of those standards is thoroughly reviewed and investigated.” The controversy emerged after a US media outlet published a report claiming that Vance had made several unusual requests involving his security team and travel arrangements. The report cited unnamed sources who alleged that some members of the vice president’s protective detail had expressed frustration over certain personal travel-related requests. One of the claims attracting significant attention involved an alleged proposal to use Marine Two, the official helicopter designated for the vice president, to transport Vance’s son to a secure golf course for golf lessons. According to the report, discussions about using the government aircraft for the trip were considered but never materialized. The proposed flight was ultimately canceled due to severe weather conditions, including thunderstorms that made flying unsafe. While the report has fueled debate in Washington, no evidence has been publicly presented showing that any rules were broken regarding the proposed transportation arrangements. The focus of the investigation currently remains on how details of the vice president’s security operations allegedly reached the media. The Office of the Vice President has not issued a detailed response to the report, and Vance’s team has so far declined to comment publicly on the allegations. Political analysts say the case highlights two sensitive issues often facing senior government officials: the appropriate use of official resources and the protection of confidential security information. Security experts warn that unauthorized disclosures about the travel plans or protective measures of top government leaders can create significant risks, even when the information appears routine. As investigators continue reviewing the matter, attention remains fixed on whether the alleged leak violated federal regulations and what consequences could follow if wrongdoing is confirmed. The findings could have broader implications for security procedures protecting senior US officials.
