water during meals

Water during meals may increase food intake

A new study suggests that drinking water again and again while eating may not help with weight loss.

Instead it could actually make people eat more food. Many people believe that taking sips of water during a meal helps them feel full faster leading them to eat less.

However the new research challenges that common belief.

Researchers at Cornell University found that for every extra 100 milliliters of water people drank during a meal they ate about 40 grams more food on average.

This equals roughly 50 extra calories.

The study also found that people who frequently switched between eating and drinking water consumed more food overall than those who did not.

Earlier studies have also shown that people with obesity are more likely to drink water for longer periods during meals drink it more quickly and take frequent sips throughout the meal.

Researchers say these findings suggest that the relationship between drinking water during meals and the amount of food people eat may be different from what was previously believed.

However they stress that more research is needed before any firm conclusions can be made.

Ducky bhai questions parents’ role in children?…

Pakistani YouTuber Ducky Bhai has questioned the growing criticism of YouTubers over their alleged negative influence on children, arguing that parents must also take responsibility for their children’s upbringing and online activities. In his recent remarks, Ducky Bhai rejected the idea that YouTubers alone are responsible when children are exposed to inappropriate or negative content. He questioned where parents are when children are spending significant amounts of time online and consuming digital content. According to Ducky Bhai, content creators should make an effort to keep their videos clean and appropriate. However, he stressed that YouTubers cannot be expected to act as parents for every child watching their content. He argued that parents have a key role in deciding what their children watch and how much time they spend online. Monitoring internet activity, setting boundaries and discussing appropriate content with children, he suggested, should be part of responsible parenting. Ducky Bhai also referred to his own childhood while explaining his perspective. He recalled that his father encouraged him to focus on his studies and used rewards, including the promise of a PlayStation for good performance, as motivation. He further revealed that his father had installed security measures on his computer that allowed him to monitor his activities. According to Ducky Bhai, this close supervision helped his parents remain aware of what he was doing online. His comments have renewed discussion about the responsibilities of parents and digital content creators in an age when children have easy access to YouTube and other online platforms. While creators can influence young audiences through the content they publish, Ducky Bhai believes parents cannot simply shift the entire responsibility onto YouTubers. Instead, he says families should actively monitor children’s digital activities and guide them toward appropriate content. The debate highlights a broader challenge for modern families: balancing children’s access to entertainment and technology with parental supervision. As online platforms continue to become an important part of children’s daily lives, both content creators and parents face increasing pressure to ensure that young viewers are exposed to safe and suitable material.

Tradition, impersonality and mythic structure in “The Waste Land”

Eliot’s masterpiece The Waste Land is published in 1922 just three years after “Tradition and the Individual Talent“. The poem serves as the ultimate practical demonstration of his theoretical ideas. Rather than describing tradition abstractly, Eliot uses allusion, polyphony, structural juxtaposing, and mythic framing to explain how a modern poem can absorb European history to process post-WWI disillusionment. Eliot argued that a poet must possess a historical sense. It is an awareness of the past’s presence alongside the contemporary moment. In The Waste Land, centuries of literary tradition exist on a single plane. In Section I (The Burial of the Dead), the speaker encounters acquaintance in modern London named Stetson and asks:    That corpse you planted last year in your garden, Has it begun to sprout?  In the very next line, Eliot links this modern London scene directly to the Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage. You who were with me in the ships at Mylae!   Modern industrial London and ancient Rome are collapsed into the same spiritual wasteland. The historical sense allows Eliot to treat human trauma across millennia as simultaneous rather than sequential. In his Impersonal Theory, Eliot argued that the poet’s mind acts as a catalytic medium. It’s  fusing disparate feelings and literary artifacts into a new substance without injecting personal bias. Throughout the 433 lines of The Waste Land, Eliot incorporates over 35 distinct literary references, 6 foreign languages, and references to sacred texts across Eastern and Western traditions. Eliot quotes Edmund Spenser’s Renaissance poem Prothalamion: Sweet Thames, run softly, till I end my song. He juxtaposes Spenser’s idyllic, nymph-filled river with the industrial Thames of 1920s London, scattered with silk handkerchiefs, cardboard boxes, cigarette ends. As commuters cross London Bridge, Eliot echoes Dante’s Inferno (Canto III): I had not thought death had undone so many. The modern office workers are literally mapped onto the souls trapped in Hell’s vestibule. He isn’t relying on a traditional narrative arc or a subjective personal narrative. Eliot uses what he famously called the Mythic Method (a technique he also praised in James Joyce’s Ulysses)..Eliot grounds the entire poem in two scholarly texts on mythology and ritual. From Ritual to Romance (the Grail Legend and the sterile Fisher King). The Golden Bough (ancient fertility cults, dying-and-rising gods). The underlying archetype, a sterile land awaiting a spiritual rain to restore fertility, unifies the fragmented scenes of modern decay (mechanized sex, empty conversations, spiritual apathy). Therefore, the individual talent grounds chaos in timeless mythic order. In order to achieve the extinction of personality, Eliot abandons a central I persona. Instead, he speaks through a chorus of shifting voices. A Marie in Munich, a hyacinth girl, a cockney woman in a pub, and Saint Augustine. In his famous explanatory notes to line 218, Eliot exposes he unifying center of the poem:  Tiresias, although a mere spectator and not indeed a ‘character’, is yet the most important personage in the poem, uniting all the rest… What Tiresias sees, in fact, is the substance of the poem. Tiresias: the blind, bisexual prophet of Greek myth (from Sophocles and Ovid). It has lived as both man and woman and seen the depths of classical tragedy. Eliot submerges his own biographical ego into an ancient, collective consciousness by adopting Tiresias as the central perspective Eliot’s concept of tradition is not narrowly provincial. His concept relates to the broader heritage of human thought. In the final section “What the Thunder Said”, the modern mind seeks a cure for its spiritual dryness not in the West, but in the Upanishads. The thunder speaks the Sanskrit syllables: Datta (give), Dayadhvam (sympathize) and Damyata (control). The poem concludes with the solemn formal chant: Shantih shantih shantih The Peace which passeth understanding. The final line: “These fragments I have shored against my ruins” summarizes Eliot’s entire philosophy of tradition. Modern civilization may be in ruins, but the individual poet reconstructs meaning by gathering and rearranging the enduring fragments of global tradition.

  • Vaping may be as harmful as smoking

Smoking is well known to cause lung cancer heart disease and breathing problems.  However many people believe that vaping is a safer alternative. New scientific research suggests this belief may be misleading. Studies show that using e-cigarettes can also harm the body and may cause damage similar to that seen in cigarette smokers. Experts say switching from cigarettes to vaping should not be considered completely safe. Although e-cigarettes do not contain traditional tobacco they still expose the body to harmful substances. Research published in 2026 by the University of New South Wales along with findings from scientists at the University of Southern California found that vaping can damage the DNA in cells of the mouth and lungs. DNA is the body’s genetic blueprint. It controls how cells grow and function. When DNA is damaged the risk of serious diseases including cancer can increase. Researchers also found that sweet and fruit flavored vape products may contribute to DNA damage. People who use pod based vaping devices showed even higher levels of cell damage in the study. According to the scientists vaping may increase the risk of cancers of the mouth and lungs.  The research also found that DNA damage in people who vape was almost as severe as the damage seen in cigarette smokers. Although vaping and smoking work differently both can seriously affect health. Health experts advise people not to think of vaping as a harmless option. Every vaping session may damage important cells in the body. They recommend avoiding vaping altogether and raising awareness about its possible health risks.

  • The Cost of Carelessness

Through the columns of your newspaper, I would like to draw attention to the growing problem of carelessness in our society. Many accidents and difficulties could be prevented if people and authorities took their responsibilities seriously. Careless driving, ignoring traffic rules, poor road conditions, and negligence by concerned departments are putting innocent lives at risk. People often drive at high speed, use mobile phones while driving, or ignore traffic signals. At the same time, damaged roads and a lack of proper safety measures make the situation worse. The cost of such carelessness is very high. Families lose their loved ones, people suffer injuries, and society faces unnecessary financial and emotional burdens. These problems cannot be solved unless everyone understands their responsibility. I urge the authorities to strictly enforce traffic rules, improve road conditions, and take action against negligence. Citizens should also follow safety rules and act responsibly.

The architecture of world-building in fiction

When readers choose a speculative novel or immerse themselves in a literary landscape, they are considering than following a character’s journey. They are stepping into a fully realized alternate reality. The imaginary reality is complete with its own geography, social hierarchies, natural laws, and cultural mythologies. While world-building is often discussed as a technical craft of maps, timelines, and terminology, its true power lies in psychology. The most compelling fictional universes merely inform readers. They subtly reshape how the human brain processes space, identity, and meaning. Psychologists refer to the mental phenomenon of becoming lost in a narrative as narrative transportation. When world-building is executed with precision, readers undergo a temporary shift in consciousness. Their immediate physical surroundings fade, and their working memory fully commits to the sensory and spatial details of the fictional environment. This process relies heavily on cognitive schemas. The mental blueprints the brain uses to organize information about the real world. Effective authors exploit these schemas. They purposefully present familiar elements of human behavior or physics to evoke wonder. What makes world-building psychologically resonant is the sheer volume of factual detail an author creates. Above all, the emotional truth that lies within those details. A fantasy city or distant alien colony feels authentic. Especially, its architecture, customs, and laws reflect the lived anxieties and aspirations of its inhabitants. Consider how fictional societies address scarcity, power, memory, or grief. When a setting’s internal logic mirrors fundamental human dilemmas, the brain accepts the setting as tangible. The world becomes a living stage rather than a static backdrop. Furthermore, immersive world-building fulfills a profound psychological need for safe exploration.  Well-crafted settings safely ask readers to navigate complex political systems, environmental collapses, or unfamiliar norms from a comfortable distance. Fiction acts as cognitive testing where readers can process real-world existential fears without experiencing direct danger. The sense of discovery that comes from decoding a world’s hidden rules releases dopamine. The experience rewards the reader’s curiosity and keeps them engaged across hundreds of pages. Ultimately, world-building is an exercise in mutual trust between writer and reader. The author provides the architectural framework. However, the reader’s mind brings the bricks and mortar. They use their own memories, visual imaginations, and emotional experiences to bring the landscape to life. When done right, a well-built fictional world never truly leaves the reader. Long after the final page is turned, its echoes linger in the mind. The immersive imagination forever alters how we view the boundary between what is real and what can be imagined.
