66kg hashish seized in Karachi, major drug smuggli…

A major inter-provincial drug smuggling attempt was foiled in Karachi after a joint operation by a federal civil intelligence agency and Mochko Police resulted in the seizure of 66 kilograms of hashish and the arrest of two suspects.

According to District Keamari Police, authorities received intelligence indicating that a large quantity of narcotics was being transported from Balochistan to Karachi. Acting on the tip-off, law enforcement officials established a checkpoint on Hub River Road to intercept the suspected vehicle.

During the operation, officers signaled a Toyota Land Cruiser to stop. Instead of complying, the occupants attempted to flee at high speed by diverting onto an unpaved road. However, the vehicle lost control and overturned, allowing police to quickly move in and apprehend the suspects.

The arrested individuals were identified as Faisal and Abdul Wali. A thorough search of the overturned vehicle led to the recovery of 66 kilograms of hashish, which had been concealed in multiple packages inside the Land Cruiser. The vehicle was also taken into police custody as part of the investigation.

Police officials stated that the narcotics were allegedly being smuggled from Balochistan into Karachi as part of an inter-provincial trafficking operation. Investigators believe the suspects may be linked to a larger drug trafficking network operating across provincial borders.

A case has been registered against the accused under the relevant anti-narcotics laws. Authorities have launched further investigations to identify other members of the network, determine the intended destination of the seized drugs, and uncover the full scope of the smuggling operation.

Law enforcement agencies described the operation as a significant success in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking. Officials reiterated their commitment to carrying out intelligence-based operations to dismantle narcotics networks and strengthen public safety across Karachi and other parts of Pakistan.

The successful seizure highlights the growing coordination between intelligence agencies and local police in combating organized crime. Authorities have urged the public to continue reporting suspicious activities, emphasizing that community cooperation remains essential in preventing drug trafficking and maintaining law and order.

  • Welfare pharmacy seal-off adds to poor patients’ woes

GUJRAT: The District Health Authority (DHA) has shut down the medical store of the Patients’ Welfare Association at Jalalpur Jattan Civil Hospital following the recent visit of Punjab Secretary for Health and Population Nadia Saqib, a move that has drawn concern from patients, civil society representatives and local residents. The medical store, which had been providing medicines to poor and needy patients on a welfare basis, was closed after Secretary Nadia Saqib’s visit to Gujrat last week. Medical stores at THQ hospitals in Kharian and Kunjah were also closed following the health secretary’s directions, according to official sources. The Health Department’s position is that medicines should not be distributed without a Drug Testing Laboratory (DTL) report. Officials said the Jalalpur Jattan store was sealed because the medicines available there did not have the required DTL reports. They maintained that the department could not allow medicines to be provided to patients without ensuring their quality through the prescribed testing process. However, the closure of the patients’ welfare association’s medical store has raised concerns among local residents, particularly because the association had been supplementing the medicines officially provided by the hospital and helping poor patients who could not afford medicines from private pharmacies. Sources said the official medicine budget of Jalalpur Jattan Civil Hospital was already very low, even when compared with hospitals functioning at the THQ level. Local authorities had therefore engaged civil society and philanthropists to supplement the officially provided medicines and facilitate poor and needy patients. The development has also triggered protests by civil society representatives, who have demanded immediate attention to the shortage of medicines and other healthcare facilities at the hospital, particularly now that the welfare pharmacy is no longer operational. Representatives of the Patients’ Welfare Association have also urged Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to take notice of the situation and ensure the establishment of a proper THQ hospital at Jalalpur Jattan, permission for the resumption of medicine provision through appropriate channels, and an increase in the hospital’s medicine budget. The association’s representatives have also criticised the frequent changes of medical superintendents at Jalalpur Jattan Civil Hospital and demanded more medical officers and other staff to improve healthcare services. Jalalpur Jattan was upgraded as a tehsil headquarters by former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi in 2022. Despite being the second major urban centre of Gujrat district, the tehsil has yet to get a THQ-level hospital for its population of around 700,000, according to local sources. The issue has become particularly sensitive for residents because the Patients’ Welfare Association had emerged as an important support system for poor patients seeking treatment at the civil hospital. While the Health Department insists that medicines must undergo the required testing process before being distributed, local residents argue that the closure has further reduced an already limited source of medicines for needy patients. The situation has now put the spotlight on both the quality-control requirements for medicines and the broader shortage of healthcare resources at Jalalpur Jattan Civil Hospital.

Public projects are people’s right, not a gift: …

ISLAMABAD, July 26: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said that facilities and development projects built for the public should not be described as gifts. He said these projects are the people’s right. In a video statement, Bilawal said people were being told about promises involving buses, roads and airports. He welcomed every project aimed at improving public facilities. He said he would welcome every new bus service. He would also welcome every road, hospital and airport built for the people. However, Bilawal stressed that such facilities should not be presented as gifts to the public. He said the people have a right to better transport, healthcare, roads and other basic services. The PPP chairman said his party had also taken practical steps instead of making only promises. He claimed that around 3,000 new employment opportunities had been created through PPP initiatives. Bilawal also spoke about Mirpur Airport. He said he had personally worked to secure funds for the airport in the previous budget. He said the allocation was made during the budget process to support the airport project. He presented the initiative as part of efforts to improve facilities for the people of the region. Bilawal also criticised his political opponents while discussing development work in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He said it appeared that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leaders Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz were standing with their minister. The PPP chairman also referred to a stadium where his political opponents had recently addressed a gathering. He said the stadium was constructed during a previous PPP government. Bilawal said his focus was not limited to development projects. He said he wanted the people of Kashmir to receive their fundamental political and economic rights. He specifically mentioned the right to governance, ownership and employment. According to Bilawal, providing these rights to the people would be more important than announcing development projects as gifts. He said people should have ownership over the resources and development of their region. They should also have access to employment opportunities. Bilawal maintained that governments must fulfil their responsibilities towards citizens. Public infrastructure, he said, should be viewed as an entitlement. He added that roads, hospitals, transport services and airports are built using public resources. Therefore, they should not be used as political gifts.

Govt hikes petrol by Rs4.4, diesel by Rs3.62 as gl…

The federal government on Thursday increased the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel by Rs4.40 and Rs3.62 per litre, respectively, effective July 24. Following the latest revision, petrol now stands at Rs331.52 per litre, while HSD is priced at Rs378.66. The price hike comes amid a surge in global oil prices, with Brent crude jumping 6% to $100.50 a barrel following attacks on tankers in the Red Sea, which have choked off a second crucial Middle East artery for global oil supplies alongside Iran’s near-closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This is the fourth consecutive day the government has revised fuel prices after switching to a daily review mechanism last week to reflect volatility in international markets. The new system bases daily fuel prices on a seven-day average of international market rates, ensuring timely adjustments to align with global trends. The latest increase was anticipated as oil prices surged to their highest level since May, driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East. The price revision came after the government and the All Pakistan Petrol Pump Owners Association reached an agreement a day ago to postpone the association’s planned nationwide shutdown for two weeks. The agreement followed successful negotiations with Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, who assured dealers that their long-pending concerns, including demands for a monthly pricing mechanism and an increase in dealer commissions, would be addressed. The surge in global oil prices has been fueled by Houthi attacks on oil tankers in the Red Sea, which have raised fears of a wider regional conflict. The attacks have disrupted shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb strait, a vital alternative route for Saudi oil exports, adding to the supply concerns already triggered by the near-closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The dual disruptions have put energy markets on edge, with fears of a global supply crunch intensifying. The spike in oil prices has also impacted global stock markets, with major tech giants knocking US stocks lower and Europe’s borrowing costs spiking to long-term highs. The unsettling day across markets reflects the broader economic implications of the Middle East conflict, which continues to disrupt global energy supplies and threaten economic stability. As the situation remains volatile, further price revisions are likely in the coming days. The government has assured the public that it is monitoring the situation closely and will take necessary measures to mitigate the impact on consumers. However, with global oil prices expected to remain elevated, Pakistani consumers are likely to face continued pressure on fuel costs, affecting transportation, goods, and services across the country. The government’s daily price revision mechanism aims to provide transparency and responsiveness to market changes, but it also means that consumers will face more frequent price adjustments as global oil markets remain volatile. The coming days will be critical in determining whether the situation stabilizes or whether further hikes are needed to reflect global trends.

Murkowski opposes Blanche, putting Trump’s AG pick at risk

WASHINGTON: Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has announced that she will vote against Todd Blanche’s nomination for US attorney general, dealing another setback to President Donald Trump’s choice and leaving his confirmation prospects increasingly uncertain. Murkowski’s decision makes her the second Republican senator to oppose Blanche, following Senator Susan Collins. With the Republican majority in the Senate already facing a narrow margin, even one more GOP defection could put the nomination in serious jeopardy. Murkowski said concerns surrounding an $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund played a major role in her decision. Although the fund was rescinded while Blanche’s nomination was under consideration, she questioned whether it could be restored if Blanche is confirmed. “The country needs an Attorney General who will check the worst impulses of this administration,” Murkowski said, adding that she did not have sufficient confidence that Blanche would fulfil that role. Her opposition adds to a growing political challenge for Blanche, who is seeking Senate approval to lead the Justice Department. The nomination has faced scrutiny over questions surrounding the department’s independence and its handling of politically sensitive matters. The situation is particularly delicate because Republican Senator Mitch McConnell is absent from the Senate. That leaves Blanche with little room for further defections, while attention has turned to Republican Senator Bill Cassidy, who has yet to make his position clear. Murkowski, a longtime Alaska senator known for occasionally breaking with her party, said she had met with Blanche several times and viewed him as capable. However, she ultimately concluded that his nomination raised concerns she could not overlook. Her decision could force Senate Republican leaders to intensify efforts to secure support for Blanche before the chamber’s August recess. For Trump, a failed confirmation would represent a significant political setback in his effort to shape the Justice Department with his preferred leadership. The Senate battle is now expected to remain closely watched as Republicans work to determine whether Blanche can secure enough votes.

ECC to review Rs1.34 hike in dealers’ margin

ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) is set to consider a proposal to increase the margin of petroleum dealers. The meeting will be held on Friday evening. Federal Finance Minister will chair the session. The meeting is scheduled for 6pm. According to sources, the increase in petroleum dealers’ margins is the only item on the agenda. The committee will examine a proposal for a Rs1.34 per litre increase. Petroleum dealers currently receive a margin of Rs8.64 per litre on petroleum products. If approved, the proposed increase will raise the margin to Rs9.98 per litre. The proposal comes after discussions between the government and representatives of petroleum dealers. During those talks, the government had assured dealers that their margin would be increased. Dealers have been seeking an adjustment in their margin amid rising operational expenses. They argue that higher costs have affected the profitability of their businesses. The ECC will review the proposal and decide whether the increase should be approved. The committee’s decision will determine the next steps for implementing the proposed adjustment. Any increase in the dealers’ margin could also affect the overall pricing structure of petroleum products. The final impact will depend on how the government incorporates the additional margin into the pricing mechanism.
