Modi’s Education Minister quits as Indian yo…

Indian youth protesters called off weeks of demonstrations and celebrated in the streets on Saturday after Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government bowed to demands including calls to fix a cheating-prone exam system. The worst political crisis of Modi’s third term had peaked this week when thousands of protesters marched on parliament, with police using tear gas to control them.

Young voters form a critical base of Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. But youths calling themselves “cockroaches” had taken to the streets since late June, after national exam papers were leaked forcing a resit which affected 2 million students and galvanised anger about the lack of prospects for young Indians. The resignation of Pradhan, the students’ primary demand, came as a surprise because Modi’s government had refused to fix the exam system.

Celebrations erupted at the Jantar Mantar protest site in the capital Delhi, with thousands of youngsters chanting victory slogans and dancing. The youth-led Cockroach Janta Party movement, which spearheaded the demonstrations, said it would end its protests. “We have done it,” said Abhijeet Dipke, CJP’s founder, to loud cheers at the site. Youngsters shouted “Jai Hind” as the national anthem played on loudspeakers and sweets were distributed.

Roads around the central business district of Connaught Place near the protest site were shut amid celebrations and a swelling crowd of thousands of protesters. Delhi Metro rail stations in and around the area that were closed for much of four days this week were also opened. “Young generation is here. This is a win for the constitution,” protester Tluanga Ralte said, walking with a copy of the Indian constitution at the protest site after Pradhan’s resignation. “We are not a lazy generation.”

Pradhan, 57, a senior member of Modi’s BJP and the son of a veteran party leader, had been education minister since 2021. He is only the second minister to resign following a scandal since Modi came to power in 2014. Pradhan said he resigned to prevent anti-national forces from exploiting the situation. His resignation marks a significant victory for the youth-led movement, which has highlighted the systemic failures in India’s education system and the broader challenges facing young people in the country.

The protests and their resolution reflect the growing political consciousness and mobilisation of India’s youth, who are increasingly demanding accountability and transparency from their leaders. The government’s concession to the protesters’ demands signals a recognition of the power of youth activism in shaping the country’s political landscape. The movement, which began as a response to exam paper leaks, has grown into a broader critique of the government’s education policies and its approach to addressing the concerns of young Indians. The victory at Jantar Mantar has inspired other youth movements across the country, with activists hoping that this momentum will lead to further reforms. The resignation of Pradhan represents a turning point in the relationship between the government and the younger generation, offering a glimmer of hope for a more responsive and accountable governance system in India. The celebrations in Delhi serve as a reminder of the power of peaceful protest and the importance of listening to the voices of the youth, who are the future of the nation. The coming months will be critical in determining whether the government will follow through on its promises to fix the exam system and address the broader concerns of India’s young population. The youth-led movement has shown that collective action can bring about change, and its legacy is likely to inspire future generations to continue fighting for their rights and aspirations. The resignation of Pradhan is a significant milestone, but the journey towards a more equitable and just education system in India is far from over. The country’s youth remain hopeful that this victory will pave the way for meaningful reforms and a brighter future for all.

    Spain declares national emergency

MADRID: Spain has declared a national emergency after a series of fast-moving wildfires spread across areas near Madrid and the neighboring province of Ávila, forcing more than 10,000 residents to flee their homes. The fires, fueled by extreme heat and dry conditions, have overwhelmed emergency services and prompted one of the country’s largest wildfire responses in recent years. The Spanish Interior Ministry announced the emergency declaration late Thursday, citing the simultaneous outbreak of multiple wildfires, challenging weather conditions, and the need to coordinate large-scale resources from various government agencies. Officials said the combination of several active fire fronts had significantly complicated firefighting operations and civil protection efforts. Authorities explained that placing the situation under a national emergency allows the central government to take direct control of the response. Under Spain’s National Civil Protection System, the Interior Minister now oversees the coordination of firefighting teams, emergency services, and military support. Officials noted that this is the first time a wildfire has led to such a declaration under the current emergency framework. The regional government of Madrid described the situation as one of “extreme gravity” and requested immediate assistance from the national authorities. Officials warned that active wildfires burning in Villa del Prado, San Martín de Valdeiglesias, and Almorox, located in the neighboring region of Castilla-La Mancha, were spreading rapidly and could exceed the current firefighting capacity. Another major blaze in Burgohondo, in the province of Ávila, was also moving toward the Madrid region due to strong winds and unfavorable weather conditions. As a precaution, more than 10,000 people have been evacuated from several communities, including Villa del Prado, San Martín de Valdeiglesias, Pelayos de la Presa, and Aldea del Fresno. Emergency shelters have been established to accommodate displaced residents, while authorities continue to monitor the movement of the fires and issue evacuation orders where necessary. To combat the crisis, more than 270 emergency personnel and at least 40 ground firefighting units have been deployed across the affected regions. Specialized teams from Spain’s Military Emergency Unit (UME) have also joined the operation, providing additional manpower, equipment, and logistical support to local firefighters battling the flames. Spain, along with many other countries in southern Europe, has experienced increasingly severe wildfire seasons in recent years. Scientists attribute the growing intensity of these fires to climate change, which has contributed to prolonged heatwaves, drought conditions, and unpredictable weather patterns. Experts also note that unusually heavy rainfall during the spring encouraged abundant vegetation growth. As temperatures soared during the summer, this vegetation dried out, creating vast amounts of highly combustible fuel that has allowed fires to spread rapidly. The environmental impact has already been devastating. More than 100,000 hectares of land have burned across Spain so far this year, roughly matching the country’s average annual burned area over the past decade. The current wildfire season has also become one of the deadliest in recent history, with 13 people losing their lives. Authorities have urged residents in high-risk areas to follow evacuation orders and remain alert as firefighters continue working around the clock to contain the blazes. Weather conditions remain challenging, raising concerns that the fires could continue to spread in the coming days despite the large-scale emergency response.

Italy faces growing childhood obesity crisis as diets change

Italy is confronting a growing childhood obesity problem as traditional Mediterranean eating habits are increasingly replaced by calorie-heavy and highly processed foods. The issue is particularly serious in southern Italy. In parts of the Campania region, more than 40% of children aged eight and nine are reported to be overweight. Naples and surrounding communities have become major areas of concern for health professionals. Doctors say they are seeing increasingly younger patients with severe obesity. At a hospital in Naples, specialists who once mainly treated adults are now treating teenagers with serious weight-related problems. In severe cases, patients may require bariatric surgery to reduce the size of the stomach. However, doctors say some teenagers are now arriving at weights that make such procedures too risky. Some are first given medical treatment to help control appetite and lose enough weight to undergo surgery safely. Health experts point to major changes in Italian eating habits as one factor behind the trend. The traditional Mediterranean diet, built around vegetables, legumes, whole grains, olive oil and fish, is becoming less common. Instead, children are increasingly exposed to processed snacks, sugary drinks, refined carbohydrates and calorie-dense foods. Experts say the problem is not necessarily one particular meal but the cumulative effect of frequent snacking and poor diet quality. Doctors also say many parents struggle to recognise when their children are overweight. In some communities, a heavier child may traditionally be viewed as healthy or well-fed, making it harder for families to identify a potential health problem early. Physical activity can also be difficult for some children. Many schools operate in historic buildings that were not designed to provide adequate space for modern sports and exercise. Authorities are now attempting to address the problem through schools and community programmes. A regional initiative in Campania plans to involve more than 17,000 students across 25 schools in nutrition education and healthy lifestyle programmes, with families also receiving guidance. Italy has also taken a broader approach to obesity. In 2025, it became the first country to introduce a national law recognising obesity as a chronic, progressive and relapsing disease. Campania is also being used to test new approaches, including a controlled “fast-mimicking” diet for overweight adolescents. Researchers hope the programme could improve metabolic health, although some paediatric specialists have raised concerns about the limited evidence and possible psychological effects of restrictive diets on young people. Health experts stress that tackling childhood obesity will require more than simply telling children to eat less or exercise more. Families, schools, healthcare providers and policymakers all have a role in changing the environment around young people.

Taylor Swift reveals the biggest stress of cheerin…

Taylor Swift has become a familiar face at NFL stadiums while supporting Travis Kelce, but according to new reports, game days are far from relaxing for the global music superstar. Swift has attended numerous Kansas City Chiefs games since her relationship with Kelce became public, often drawing as much attention as the action on the field. While fans love spotting her in the stands, those close to the singer say watching her husband play is one of the most nerve-racking experiences she faces. According to reports, the hardest part for Swift is seeing Kelce put his body on the line every week. Football is one of the most physically demanding sports, and every tackle, collision and fall leaves her worried about his safety. Despite enjoying the excitement of the games, she reportedly spends much of the time hoping he walks off the field healthy.  The concern is understandable. Kelce has built a career as one of the NFL’s elite tight ends, a position that involves constant physical contact. While he has proven remarkably durable throughout his career, injuries are always a possibility in professional football. Swift’s presence at Chiefs games has also become a headline of its own. Television cameras frequently cut to her reactions, and every expression is analyzed by fans across social media. That level of public scrutiny adds another layer of pressure to an already emotional experience. Reports have suggested that she has intentionally kept a lower profile at some games to avoid becoming the center of attention and to keep the focus on Kelce and the team.  Despite the stress, Swift continues to show up whenever her schedule allows. Friends say supporting Kelce remains important to her, even if every game comes with anxious moments. The singer understands the demands of elite performance herself, while Kelce has previously spoken about admiring the dedication and physical endurance required during her record-breaking tours.  For Swift, the cheers, celebrations and victories are worth the nerves. But behind every smile from the VIP suite is the hope that the final whistle brings the same outcome she wants most—not just a Chiefs win, but seeing Kelce leave the field safe and healthy.
