AJK poll body issues strict election warning

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Election Commission has warned political parties and election candidates against violating the electoral code of conduct ahead of the upcoming general elections.

The commission said strict action would be taken against anyone found using government resources or machinery for election campaigning.

An AJK Election Commission spokesperson said federal and provincial ministers could participate in election campaigns but would not be allowed to use official protocol, vehicles or government resources for political purposes.

The commission also prohibited the announcement of new development schemes, financial packages and public welfare projects during the election campaign. Any such announcement would be treated as a violation of the electoral code.

The spokesperson warned that vehicles, equipment and relief supplies provided by the federal or provincial governments could be confiscated if they were used for electoral purposes. Legal action would also be taken against those responsible for violations.

The warning came during a meeting in Mirpur chaired by AJK Chief Election Commissioner Ghulam Mustafa Mughal to review preparations for the upcoming polls.

Senior officials from the Election Commission, district administrations and police departments attended the meeting. Officials briefed the chief election commissioner on security and administrative arrangements in Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber.

Mughal expressed satisfaction with the preparations and stressed that the elections must be conducted in a peaceful, free, fair and impartial manner.

He said all relevant institutions would have to work together to ensure the smooth completion of the polling process and counter rumours surrounding the elections.

The chief election commissioner said security agencies were responsible for protecting polling stations, voters and election staff. He added that security forces had begun arriving at polling stations ahead of the phased voting process.

Mughal also rejected concerns that holding elections in phases could allow results from one division to influence voting in another. He said AJK had its own political and local dynamics and that the phased polling arrangement would not affect the integrity of the election process.

The AJK Election Commission had earlier announced that polling would begin on July 27 and take place in three phases.

Voting in Mirpur Division is scheduled for July 27. Muzaffarabad Division and 12 refugee constituencies will vote on August 2, while polling in Poonch Division will be held on August 10.

OGDCL confirms Pakistan’s first lithium disc…

Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has announced a major scientific breakthrough by confirming the presence of lithium in underground geothermal formation water, also known as brine. The discovery is the first of its kind in Pakistan and is being seen as an important step towards exploring new sources of critical minerals needed for clean energy technologies. The discovery was made under OGDCL’s pilot geothermal programme. According to officials, advanced geochemical testing was carried out on formation water collected from a successfully tested high-temperature geothermal well. The analysis confirmed the presence of lithium in concentrations comparable to those found in some of the world’s well-known lithium-bearing geothermal brine resources. Senior OGDCL officials said this is the first confirmed lithium discovery from geothermal brine in Pakistan. They described the development as a significant achievement for the country’s energy and mineral exploration sector. The finding places Pakistan among a growing group of countries investigating geothermal resources as a potential source of lithium. Lithium has become one of the world’s most sought-after minerals due to the rapid expansion of clean energy technologies. It is a key component in rechargeable batteries used in electric vehicles, energy storage systems, smartphones, laptops and many other electronic devices. Global demand for lithium has increased sharply as countries move towards renewable energy and low-carbon transportation. Experts say geothermal brine is emerging as an alternative source of lithium in several parts of the world. Unlike traditional mining, lithium extraction from geothermal water has the potential to combine energy production with mineral recovery, although commercial development requires extensive research and investment. Officials stressed that the latest discovery does not mean commercial production will begin immediately. Further geological studies, laboratory testing and feasibility assessments will be required to determine the size of the lithium resource, the concentration of the mineral and whether extraction would be commercially viable. The discovery is expected to encourage more investment in Pakistan’s geothermal and mineral exploration sectors. Researchers believe additional exploration could identify other areas with similar geological conditions and expand the country’s knowledge of its underground mineral resources.

Scarlett Johansson is opening up about the evolution of Hollywood’s red carpet culture, revealing how the expectations placed on actors have shifted dramatically since she began her career. The Oscar-nominated actress says today’s approach to fashion and public appearances is far more polished and strategic than it was when she first entered the entertainment industry. Speaking in a recent interview, Johansson reflected on the early years of her career, recalling a time when red carpet events felt more relaxed and less focused on creating viral fashion moments. According to the actress, celebrities once had greater freedom to express themselves without the intense scrutiny that now comes with every public appearance. (People) Johansson explained that, in the past, actors often selected outfits based on personal preference rather than carefully planned branding strategies. Today, however, red carpet appearances have become an important part of celebrity image-building, with stylists, fashion houses, and social media all playing significant roles in shaping a star’s public identity. The Black Widow star acknowledged that fashion remains an exciting part of the entertainment industry, but she believes the pressure surrounding high-profile events has increased considerably. Every outfit is now analyzed instantly across social media platforms, where fans and fashion critics closely examine every detail. She noted that celebrities were able to experiment with different styles without worrying that every fashion choice would become the subject of widespread online discussion. The actress also reflected on how digital media has transformed celebrity culture. Before the rise of social media, red carpet moments were largely limited to television broadcasts and magazine coverage. Today, images circulate around the world within seconds, making fashion an even bigger part of an actor’s public presence. (Vanity Fair and People) Despite the changes, Johansson said she still enjoys attending premieres and industry events. She praised the creativity of designers and stylists while emphasizing that confidence and authenticity remain more important than following every trend. For her, the best fashion moments are those that genuinely reflect a person’s personality rather than simply chasing headlines. Johansson’s comments have resonated with many fans, who praised her honest perspective on the realities of modern Hollywood. Some agreed that celebrity fashion has become increasingly commercialized, while others argued that social media has also given stars more opportunities to connect directly with audiences and showcase their individual style. As one of Hollywood’s most recognizable actresses, Johansson has attended countless premieres, award shows, and international film festivals throughout her career. Her reflections offer a rare behind-the-scenes look at how celebrity culture has evolved over the past two decades. Nationwide petrol pump shutdown announced

The All Pakistan Petrol Pumps Association has announced a nationwide shutdown of petrol stations from tonight after negotiations with the government failed to resolve the dispute over daily changes in petroleum prices. Association General Secretary Nauman Butt said talks between the Petroleum Minister and petrol pump owners ended without reaching any agreement. He said the association raised concerns over the government’s decision to revise petroleum product prices on a daily basis. However, the discussions did not produce a solution acceptable to both sides. The association has now decided to close petrol pumps across the country as a protest against the unresolved issue. The shutdown announcement has raised concerns about possible disruptions in fuel supply and difficulties for consumers if the strike continues. Further developments are expected as the government and petrol pump representatives may hold additional talks to resolve the matter and restore normal fuel services. The government had earlier decided to introduce a daily petroleum pricing mechanism in view of the deteriorating regional security situation. Under the new policy, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) will announce petroleum prices on a daily basis without requiring approval from the prime minister or the federal government. However, fuel prices announced on Fridays will remain unchanged on Saturdays and Sundays. The All Pakistan Petrol Pumps Association (APPPA) has rejected the petroleum price deregulation policy and urged the government to reconsider its decision. Association Chairman Nauman Ali Butt said the burden created by the new pricing system should not be placed on petrol pump owners. He stressed that all stakeholders should be consulted before finalising fuel prices with Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). Butt added that nearly 15,000 petrol pump owners across Pakistan have expressed serious concerns over the new policy and called on the government to address their reservations before implementing the system.
