Protest erupts in Washington over Netanyahu visit

WASHINGTON: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington has sparked a fresh wave of protests, with demonstrators taking to the streets to oppose U.S. support for Israel and demand that the Israeli leader be arrested. Pro-Palestinian protesters gathered in the U.S. capital carrying Palestinian flags and banners criticising Washington’s backing of Israel. The demonstrations came as Netanyahu arrived in the United States for a scheduled meeting with President Donald Trump. At the heart of the protest was a demand that U.S. authorities enforce the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant against Netanyahu. Demonstrators argued that the United States should not provide protection to an Israeli leader facing allegations before the international court. The protest reflects the wider political and public debate in the United States over Washington’s relationship with Israel and its approach to the conflict in Gaza. Trump rules out Netanyahu arrest The demonstrations gained additional attention because Trump has already made his position clear. The U.S. president has said Netanyahu will not be arrested while he is in the United States, directly rejecting calls for his detention. Trump has also strongly defended Israel and Netanyahu in connection with the ongoing regional conflict. Netanyahu’s visit comes at a particularly sensitive moment. His meeting with Trump on Tuesday is the first between the two leaders since their joint war against Iran, with tensions reportedly emerging over how the conflict should be handled. Protest adds pressure ahead of Trump meeting The Washington demonstration adds another layer of political pressure surrounding Netanyahu’s visit. Protesters say U.S. support for Israel should be reconsidered and that international legal proceedings should not be ignored. The issue of Netanyahu’s potential arrest has also become prominent in U.S. politics. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said his administration is examining whether the city could enforce the ICC warrant if Netanyahu visits New York for the United Nations General Assembly in September. For now, however, Trump’s administration has made clear that Netanyahu will not face arrest during his stay in the United States. With protests continuing and the Trump-Netanyahu meeting attracting international attention, the visit is likely to keep the debate over Gaza, U.S.-Israel relations and international accountability firmly in the spotlight.

Independence Day stalls bring festive rush

With Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day approaching, markets across the city have come alive with stalls selling national flags, badges, flag-themed clothes, toys, caps, horns and other decorative items. Vendors have set up stalls at major commercial centres, markets, streets and residential areas. Children, youngsters and families are visiting these stalls to buy flags, badges, dupattas, ladies’ suits and children’s outfits featuring the national colours. Large and small horns remain among the most popular items, particularly among children and students. However, the continuous and often extremely loud “pee-pee” sounds have disturbed residents in several neighbourhoods, affecting their peace and sleep. Youngsters and children have also been setting off firecrackers, including Chinese-made varieties, adding to the noise in residential areas. Rising inflation has also pushed up the prices of Independence Day items, with vendors saying the cost of flags and flag-themed clothing has nearly doubled. Large horns that produce particularly loud sounds are selling for around Rs150 to Rs200.

Petroleum Levy collection hits record Rs1.57 trill…

Pakistan’s petroleum levy collection reached a record Rs1.567 trillion during the fiscal year 2025-26, exceeding both the government’s target and the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) projection, according to sources. The government also collected an additional Rs50.16 billion as Climate Support Levy during the fiscal year, adding further revenue from petroleum products. Sources said petroleum levy collections increased by Rs347.24 billion compared with the previous fiscal year. The total collection stood nearly Rs100 billion above the government’s target of Rs1.468 trillion for FY2025-26. The collection also surpassed the IMF’s estimate. The global lender had projected petroleum levy revenues of around Rs1.546 trillion for the fiscal year, meaning the actual collection exceeded the projection by approximately Rs21 billion. Petroleum levy revenues have continued to rise sharply in recent years. The government collected Rs1.220 trillion in FY2024-25, compared with Rs1.019 trillion in FY2023-24. In FY2022-23, petroleum levy collection stood at around Rs580 billion. The latest figures reflect the government’s growing reliance on petroleum-related revenues to strengthen its fiscal position and meet revenue requirements under its economic programme. At present, the government charges a petroleum levy of Rs80 per litre on petrol, while high-speed diesel carries a levy of Rs77.28 per litre. In addition, the government imposes a separate Climate Support Levy of Rs5 per litre each on petrol and diesel. The record collection comes as the government continues to seek higher revenues while managing fiscal pressures and meeting commitments under its agreement with the IMF. The increased levy revenue provides additional funds for the federal budget but also adds to the overall cost burden on consumers through petroleum prices.

Rana Sanaullah dismisses AJK rigging claims, calls…

Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah  has strongly rejected allegations of electoral rigging in Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s LA-27 constituency, calling the claims baseless and politically motivated. Speaking to reporters, Rana Sanaullah said a fake video was being circulated on social media to create the impression that irregularities had taken place during polling in the Muzaffarabad constituency. He alleged that the video was being used as part of a campaign to mislead the public and damage the credibility of the electoral process. He challenged the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) to produce credible evidence if it believed rigging had occurred. He said accusations alone were not enough and urged the party to present proof before making such serious claims. Rana Sanaullah said polling in LA-27 had been conducted peacefully since the morning. He added that no complaints had been received regarding polling staff or the administration of any polling station during the voting process. The adviser also questioned whether the PPP had filed any formal complaint with the Election Commission regarding the alleged irregularities. He said the appropriate legal and constitutional forum was available for any political party that wished to challenge the election process. According to Rana Sanaullah, the PPP had adopted a narrative of election rigging from the very beginning instead of waiting for the electoral process to conclude. He maintained that if the party had evidence, it should submit it to the Election Commission for investigation rather than relying on unverified videos and public statements.
