Over 80,000 flee as escalating wildfires ravage south-west France and Spain

More than 80,000 people have been forced to flee their homes and holiday accommodation across south-west France and central Spain as fierce, uncontained wildfires continue to sweep through the region. Fanned by relentless winds and intense heatwave conditions, the blazes have triggered national emergency declarations and prompted urgent requests for international military and civilian aerial support.

In France, authorities ordered the total evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula on the Atlantic coast as a vast wildfire in the Gironde department consumed over 12,500 hectares of forest and destroyed at least 80 homes. With the main access road threatened by advancing flames, hundreds of residents and holidaymakers were evacuated by sea using ferries and local boats. A secondary blaze further south near Biscarrosse has burned an additional 2,500 hectares, leaving coastal emergency services struggling to contain the perimeter.

Across the border in Spain, the central government declared a national emergency after two massive blazes merged outside Madrid and threatened to join a third active fire in the neighbouring province of Ávila. Over 19,000 people were evacuated overnight across affected municipalities as thick acrid smoke reached the capital’s outskirts. Spanish officials described the convergence of high temperatures, parched terrain, and strong winds as an unprecedented crisis for the region.

Both nations have activated the European Union’s Civil Protection Mechanism to request specialized firefighting aircraft, with reinforcements deployed from Portugal, the Czech Republic, Croatia, and Slovakia. Environmental scientists highlight that Europe is warming at roughly twice the global average rate, warning that prolonged droughts and extreme seasonal weather patterns are driving wildfire destruction to historic levels across the continent.

North Korean hackers develop AI tools for cyberattacks

SEOUL: A North Korean-linked hacking group has reportedly expanded its use of artificial intelligence to strengthen cyberattacks, automate operations and analyse stolen data. The group, identified as Kimsuky, has developed and collected a range of AI-related tools that could help its operators conduct attacks more efficiently, according to a South Korean cybersecurity company. The company said it discovered infrastructure linked to Kimsuky containing several programs designed to run and manage artificial intelligence models locally. These included Ollama, GPT4All and Msty. The hackers also appeared to be using retrieval-augmented generation technology. The system can help AI models search and process large collections of documents. Researchers said the use of locally operated AI models could allow the group to analyse sensitive information without sending data to external AI services. This could give hackers greater control over stolen material and reduce their reliance on third-party platforms. The investigation also uncovered AI agent development frameworks, speech-to-text software and an AI-assisted coding tool called Cursor. According to the cybersecurity firm, the findings indicate that Kimsuky may be moving beyond the simple use of generative AI for creating phishing messages. The group could now be seeking to integrate existing AI models into different stages of its cyber operations. These may include malware development, stolen-data analysis and attack automation. Researchers also identified documents related to finance and cryptocurrency on the infrastructure. Some of the files appeared to have been generated using artificial intelligence. The documents were designed to look like legitimate investment reports and other professional workplace material. Such files could potentially be used as decoys or to make malicious campaigns appear more credible. The findings have not been independently verified. However, cybersecurity researchers and government agencies have repeatedly linked North Korean state-backed groups to international cyber operations. North Korean cyber units have been accused of conducting espionage campaigns, stealing money and targeting cryptocurrency-related assets. Authorities in the United States and South Korea have previously warned about the activities of such groups. Kimsuky has long been associated with cyber-espionage operations targeting governments, organisations and individuals. The group has also been accused of gathering intelligence to support North Korea’s strategic interests. The latest findings point to a growing role for artificial intelligence in cyber operations. Security researchers have warned that AI tools can make phishing campaigns more convincing and help attackers process information and develop malicious software more quickly.

Riteish Deshmukh slams Yogesh Rawat, ends Lock Upp journey

A dramatic turn of events unfolded on Lock Upp after contestant Yogesh Rawat returned to the reality show by defeating Dheeraj Dhoopar in a challenge. However, his comeback was short-lived as co-host Riteish Deshmukh confronted him over remarks about the show’s popularity and ultimately asked him to leave the competition. After re-entering the jail, Yogesh was seen interacting with fellow contestants Akanksha Choudhary, Ram Kapoor, Akanksha Chamola, and Pamala. During the conversation, he claimed that the show’s TRP had dropped after his eviction and suggested that the makers had no choice but to bring him back because of his popularity. His comments did not go unnoticed. Riteish Deshmukh, who had been listening from outside, addressed the contestants and questioned Yogesh over his statements. The actor appeared visibly upset and challenged Yogesh’s claim that the show depended on his presence. Riteish reminded him of the exact remarks he had made, saying that Yogesh had implied the show suffered after his exit and that his fans had forced the makers to bring him back. He strongly objected to the attitude behind those comments and asked Yogesh whether he genuinely believed the show existed because of him. The host further clarified that Yogesh’s elimination had not been a personal decision. He pointed out that the contestant had lost a task and was evicted based on the format of the game, not because of any individual choice made by the hosts or the platform. When Yogesh tried to explain that he had merely expressed his personal feelings, Riteish interrupted and stressed that every statement made on the show reflected not only on the contestants but also on the hosts, the streaming platform, and the program itself. He said that claiming the show’s ratings had fallen and would rise again because of one contestant showed an inappropriate level of arrogance. Riteish then delivered a firm response, telling Yogesh that the show did not need him and announcing that he was being terminated from the house. He added that contestants must take responsibility for every word they speak and understand the impact of their public statements. The confrontation marked the climax of an already tense episode. Earlier, Yogesh had also clashed with Riteish during a separate exchange. As the contestant questioned the way events had unfolded, saying, “Sir, if this was what you wanted to do, then…,” Riteish immediately cut him off. The host firmly replied, “Don’t tell me. Don’t put this act with me,” making it clear that he was not willing to entertain further arguments. The heated exchange quickly became one of the episode’s biggest talking points among viewers, with fans reacting strongly to the unexpected termination. Yogesh’s dramatic return, bold claims about the show’s ratings, and his confrontation with Riteish Deshmukh ensured that the episode remained packed with controversy and intense emotions, making it one of the most talked-about moments of the current season of Lock Upp.
