How Gen Z turned India’s NEET protests into a vi…

NEW DELHI: What began as a protest over alleged exam paper leaks in India has evolved into something far bigger—and far more digital. Instead of relying solely on slogans and marches, Generation Z is using memes, Instagram Reels, viral trends, and pop culture references to transform street demonstrations into a social media movement.

The demonstrations, centered around alleged irregularities in the NEET medical entrance examination and concerns over transparency in recruitment and education, have continued for weeks at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, where students are demanding accountability and reforms.

At the heart of the campaign is the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), a youth-led movement that initially emerged after a sarcastic remark reportedly linked to India’s Chief Justice. What started as an online response quickly expanded into a broader campaign highlighting alleged examination leaks, recruitment irregularities, and calls for reforms in India’s education system.

Protesters are demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and a comprehensive overhaul of the country’s examination process, arguing that repeated controversies have undermined students’ trust in competitive exams.

Memes Become a Powerful Protest Tool

Unlike traditional demonstrations, Gen Z participants are blending activism with internet culture. Viral memes, trending audio clips, and humorous videos have become powerful tools for spreading their message beyond protest sites.

Rather than using conventional political messaging, young creators are adapting popular online formats to explain their frustrations in a way that resonates with millions of social media users.

The strategy has helped the movement gain significant attention on platforms such as Instagram, where short-form videos often reach audiences much larger than traditional news coverage.

‘Get Ready With Me’—For a Protest

One of the movement’s most recognizable trends is the adaptation of the viral “Get Ready With Me” (GRWM) format.

Normally associated with makeup tutorials or fashion content, the videos now begin with captions such as, “Get ready with me to join the NEET paper leak protest.”

Instead of cosmetics, creators show themselves preparing protest placards, packing water bottles, carrying first-aid kits, and heading to demonstration sites with friends.

The creative twist has struck a chord with young viewers, turning ordinary protest preparations into relatable and widely shared content.

Romance Trend Gets a Political Twist

Another viral internet format, “Who Said I Love You First?”, has also been reimagined.

Typically featuring playful romantic questions between couples, protesters have replaced the dialogue with sarcastic exchanges about exam leaks, government policies, and student frustrations.

The humorous approach allows serious concerns to be communicated through entertaining content, making the videos highly shareable while keeping attention focused on the movement’s demands.

Real Life Meets ‘Subway Surfers’

Perhaps the most eye-catching trend compares protesters running from police with the popular mobile game Subway Surfers.

Several Instagram Reels feature demonstrators moving through streets while the game’s iconic background music plays, creating a humorous parallel between the game’s endless chase sequences and real-life protest scenes.

For many young Indians who grew up playing the game, the comparison instantly resonated, helping the videos spread rapidly across social media.

Digital Activism Enters a New Era

Analysts say the movement highlights a broader shift in youth activism, where online engagement is becoming as influential as demonstrations on the ground. Memes, viral challenges, and short videos are no longer just entertainment—they have become tools for mobilizing support, shaping public conversations, and amplifying calls for change.

Whether these creative online campaigns translate into policy reforms remains uncertain. But one thing is clear: Gen Z has rewritten the rules of modern protest, proving that in the age of social media, a viral meme can sometimes carry as much impact as a protest banner.

Nawaz Sharif summons PML-N meeting in Murree to di…

President of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Nawaz Sharif, has summoned an important party meeting in Murree on Saturday, August 15, to discuss the formation of a new government in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). According to party sources, the meeting will focus primarily on the political situation in AJK and the formation of the government following the recent elections to the AJK Legislative Assembly. Senior PML-N leaders are expected to hold detailed consultations on the party’s strategy and discuss possible arrangements for forming the government in the region. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, former Punjab Chief Minister and senior PML-N leader Hamza Shehbaz, federal ministers and other senior party leaders are expected to attend the meeting in Murree. All nine newly elected PML-N members of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly have also been invited to participate in the meeting, according to sources. Their presence is expected to be particularly important as the party leadership considers its options for government formation and seeks their input on the political situation in AJK. The meeting is likely to provide the PML-N leadership with an opportunity to assess the election results and discuss the next political steps. Party leaders are expected to deliberate on potential candidates for key positions and determine how the party will proceed with its government-formation efforts. Nawaz Sharif, as president of the PML-N, is expected to lead the consultations and seek the views of senior party figures as well as the newly elected AJK assembly members. The participation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also indicates the importance the party leadership is attaching to developments in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The political situation in AJK has gained significant attention following the elections, with political parties assessing their positions in the newly elected legislative assembly. The formation of the next government will depend on the numerical strength of the parties and the political alliances that emerge following the election results. The PML-N’s leadership meeting in Murree is therefore expected to play an important role in determining the party’s immediate political strategy in AJK. Discussions may also focus on maintaining coordination between the federal leadership, the Punjab government and the party’s elected representatives in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Sources said the meeting would involve consultations rather than a routine party gathering, with the leadership expected to carefully examine the political developments before reaching decisions on government formation. The participation of all newly elected PML-N members from AJK is also expected to help the central leadership understand the ground situation and political dynamics within the region. Their recommendations could contribute to the party’s decision-making process as it moves toward forming the next government. The Murree meeting on August 15 is consequently being viewed as a significant gathering for the PML-N, as the party leadership prepares to determine its course of action in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and coordinate its political strategy with its elected representatives.

HARIPUR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has honoured Ammad Ali, founder and Chief Executive Officer of RankingGrow, with the Youth Excellence Award for his contributions to youth development, digital skills training and efforts to create greater opportunities for young people, particularly those living in underserved areas of the province. The award was presented by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Taj Muhammad Khan Tarand during a ceremony organised by the Directorate of Youth Affairs to mark International Youth Day. Ali founded RankingGrow, a digital marketing and IT services company that has been involved in initiatives aimed at equipping young people with practical digital skills and improving their access to professional training and employment opportunities. Through RankingGrow and other youth-focused initiatives, Ali has supported training programmes, workshops and community-based activities in different parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. These programmes have particularly targeted areas where young people have fewer opportunities to access modern technology, professional education, career guidance and exposure to the digital industry. The training initiatives have focused on practical and market-oriented skills that can help young people become financially independent and participate in the growing digital economy. Areas covered by these programmes include digital marketing, search engine optimisation, social media marketing, graphic design, video editing, web development, artificial intelligence, freelancing and entrepreneurship. The programmes aim to bridge the gap between traditional education and the skills increasingly demanded by employers and clients in the digital marketplace. By providing young people with relevant technical and professional skills, the initiatives seek to help participants explore employment opportunities, start freelancing careers or establish their own businesses. Ali has also received recognition for his work on other occasions. He was previously awarded the Pride of Pakistan Award under the patronage of the President of Pakistan in acknowledgement of his services and contributions. In addition, he has received other recognitions for his efforts in youth empowerment, digital skills development and community-oriented initiatives. Speaking at the award ceremony, Ali said the recognition would encourage him and his team to expand their efforts to provide young people with skills that are relevant to the changing job market. He expressed his commitment to continuing initiatives that can help young people gain access to professional opportunities and participate more effectively in the digital economy. Ali emphasised the importance of ensuring that young people from smaller cities and underserved communities are not left behind as digital technology continues to transform the employment landscape. According to him, access to digital skills and professional opportunities should not be limited to young people living in major urban centres. The Youth Excellence Award also highlights the growing importance of cooperation between government institutions, private-sector organisations and community-led initiatives in addressing challenges related to youth employment, entrepreneurship and skills development. With Khyber Pakhtunkhwa having a large and growing youth population, initiatives focused on digital education and employable skills can provide young people with alternative pathways to employment and entrepreneurship. The recognition of Ali’s work reflects the contribution of such initiatives towards creating opportunities for young people and strengthening their participation in the province’s economic and social development.

Karachi seals 200 shops in Saddar over fire safety…

The Karachi administration has sealed 200 shops in Saddar for violating fire safety regulations, as authorities intensify efforts to enforce safety standards across commercial areas. The action was taken after inspections revealed that several businesses were operating without complying with mandatory fire safety requirements. The action was taken after inspections revealed that several businesses were operating without complying with mandatory fire safety requirements. According to officials, Deputy Commissioner South Javed Nabi Khoso submitted a report to Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi detailing enforcement measures taken against businesses found in violation of fire safety laws across the district. The report stated that the sealed shops are primarily located on the ground floor of Bilal Centre and Koh Noor Centre in Saddar. Authorities found that these commercial units failed to meet prescribed fire safety standards and were operating in conditions considered unsafe for customers and employees. The crackdown forms part of a broader campaign to improve compliance with fire prevention regulations in Karachi’s busy commercial districts. Officials have emphasized that ensuring public safety remains a top priority, particularly in crowded shopping centers where inadequate emergency measures can increase the risk of serious incidents. Following the inspection drive, Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi directed all deputy commissioners in the city to strictly enforce fire safety regulations and take action against businesses that fail to comply with legal requirements. The directive aims to improve safety standards in markets, shopping centers, and commercial buildings throughout Karachi. Fire safety regulations typically require commercial establishments to maintain functioning fire extinguishers, emergency exits, alarm systems, and other protective measures designed to reduce the risk of fire-related accidents. Authorities have warned that businesses found violating these requirements may face sealing, fines, or additional legal action until the necessary safety measures are implemented. The latest enforcement drive reflects growing efforts by the city administration to strengthen public safety following concerns over fire hazards in commercial areas. Shop owners whose businesses have been sealed will be required to address the identified deficiencies and meet the prescribed safety standards before they can resume operations. Officials have indicated that inspections will continue across Karachi to ensure compliance with fire safety laws, with similar action expected against other businesses that fail to meet the required standards. The administration has urged commercial property owners and traders to fully implement fire safety measures to avoid penalties and help create a safer environment for workers and the public.

Rashid Latif urges PCB to shield Babar from English media

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to reduce Babar Azam’s media commitments during the upcoming Test tour of England, warning that the Pakistan skipper could face intense scrutiny from the English press. Pakistan have arrived in England for a three-match Test series, with Babar returning to the leadership role in red-ball cricket. The series begins at Headingley in Leeds on August 19 and will continue at Lord’s before concluding at Edgbaston in September. Speaking on a television programme, Latif described an England tour as a challenging assignment and suggested that the PCB should carefully manage Babar’s interactions with the local media. According to the former wicketkeeper-batter, the English press can generate considerable attention around visiting teams, potentially creating distractions away from the cricket. “An England tour is a difficult assignment,” Latif said, adding that the PCB should consider keeping Babar away from frequent media appearances. His suggestion is not to isolate the captain completely, but rather to share the responsibility of representing the team with other experienced players. Latif specifically recommended Shan Masood, who previously led Pakistan in Test cricket and has considerable experience of playing in England. He believes Masood is well equipped to handle difficult questions and media pressure. The former captain also identified Imam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Abbas as players who could take on media duties during the tour. Babar was reappointed Pakistan’s Test captain in July, replacing Shan Masood after his stint in charge. The PCB confirmed Babar as captain for both the West Indies and England Test tours. Pakistan’s immediate challenge will be to carry the momentum from their recent Test victory over the West Indies, where they secured an eight-wicket win in Port of Spain to level the two-match series 1-1. The England assignment will test Babar both as a batter and captain. With the spotlight likely to remain firmly on him, Latif’s advice raises an interesting question: could fewer media commitments help Babar focus more sharply on Pakistan’s battle in English conditions? The first Test will be played in Leeds from August 19–23, followed by Lord’s from August 27–31 and Birmingham from September 9–13. Pakistan squad for England Tests Babar Azam (captain), Aamir Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Ali Usman, Azan Awais, Imam-ul-Haq, Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Rizwan, Muhammad Awais Zafar, Muhammad Ghazi Ghori, Sajid Khan, Salman Ali Agha, Saud Shakeel, Shan Masood and Ubaid Shah.

Spider-Man tops Endgame box office record

Avengers directors Joe and Anthony Russo have congratulated the team behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day after the film surpassed one of Avengers: Endgame’s biggest domestic box office records. The filmmakers shared a public message on social media, praising the cast and crew after the latest Spider-Man film crossed the $1 billion mark globally and achieved the highest domestic opening weekend in box office history, overtaking the long-standing record previously held by Avengers: Endgame. In their message, the Russo brothers congratulated director Destin Daniel Cretton, lead actors Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, along with producers and the entire production team. They described the achievement as a historic moment and declared that “the gauntlet has been passed,” referencing Marvel’s iconic Infinity Gauntlet. Although Spider-Man: Brand New Day has broken several records set by Endgame, it has not yet become the fastest film to earn $1 billion worldwide, leaving that milestone intact. Industry observers believe the competition could intensify later this year when Marvel releases Avengers: Doomsday, directed by the Russo brothers. The highly anticipated superhero film is expected to arrive in cinemas in December and is already being viewed as a potential record-breaking blockbuster. The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day has further strengthened the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with strong audience turnout and impressive global ticket sales continuing to drive its performance at the box office.
