Pakistani pensioners can now obtain their Proof of Life certificate free of charge without having to visit a bank or pension office, thanks to a new digital and nationwide service introduced by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).

The facility is available through the Pak ID mobile app, NADRA Registration Centres, Union Councils, e-Sahulat franchises and NADRA’s mobile services across Pakistan.

The initiative has been introduced on the special directions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control Ministry of Defence Controller General of Accounts (CGA) and Military Accountant General (MAG).

The service is particularly aimed at helping elderly bedridden and differently abled pensioners who may find it difficult to travel repeatedly to banks or pension offices to fulfil the Proof of Life requirement.

How to Get Proof of Life from Home

The easiest option for eligible pensioners is the Pak ID mobile app. Pensioners can complete the required identity verification process through the app and obtain their Proof of Life certificate from home.

Pensioners who cannot use the Pak ID app themselves can also receive assistance from a family member. A family member may use their own Pak ID account to complete the prescribed identity verification process for the pensioner.

For those who require in-person assistance, the service is available free of charge at more than 5,000 e-Sahulat franchises across the country. Pensioners can also visit more than 988 NADRA Registration Centres and around 500 Union Councils, where priority services are being provided without requiring them to wait in the regular queue.

Pensioners who cannot easily travel to a service point can use NADRA’s mobile registration vans, biker services and main pack services.

National Pensioners Register

The Proof of Life facility is part of a wider reform initiative under which NADRA has established a National Pensioners Register. In its first phase pensioners administered by CGA and MAG have been included in the database.

The digital register provides pension authorities with a reliable source for verifying a pensioner’s identity and life status. It can also reduce the need for families to repeatedly report the same information to different government departments.

If a pensioner’s death is reported through NADRA’s death notification system or recorded in the Civil Registration Management System, the relevant pension controller can receive a digital notification.

NADRA has also introduced a verification service for authorized banks, allowing them to directly check a pensioner’s Proof of Life status through the National Pensioners Register.

The new system is expected to make pension verification easier while reducing paperwork, repeated physical visits and inconvenience for elderly pensioners.

    LAHORE: The Lahore High Court ( LHC) has overturned the life imprisonment sentence of a man convicted of murdering his wife, ruling that the prosecution failed to establish his guilt beyond reasonable doubt. Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh issued a detailed 19-page written judgment, allowing the appeal filed by the convict, Tanveer, and ordering his immediate release. According to the verdict, Tanveer maintained that he was on duty at a petrol station at the time of the incident and denied any involvement in the killing of his wife. The court observed that the prosecution had failed to produce reliable and convincing evidence to support the allegations against him. The judgment concluded that the available evidence was insufficient to sustain the conviction, leading the court to set aside the trial court’s decision and acquit the appellant. Tanveer had been sentenced to life imprisonment in 2022 by a trial court after being found guilty of his wife’s murder. In addition to the prison term, he was fined Rs400,000. He later challenged the conviction before the Lahore High Court, which has now ruled in his favor.

    Pakistan weekly inflation rises as 20 essential items get costlier

    Weekly inflation in the country has recorded a slight increase. According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), weekly inflation increased by 0.28%. During the week, prices of 20 essential commodities increased while nine items became cheaper and the prices of 22 items remained stable. According to the PBS, onion prices increased by 10.1% and chicken by 9.19%. The prices of gram lentils rose by 2.4% while the prices of ghee, flour and several other commodities also increased. The PBS said that tomato prices decreased by 6.82%. LPG, sugar, eggs and potatoes also became cheaper. Meanwhile, the price of a 20-kilogram bag of flour increased by up to Rs100 in one week. According to the PBS, the maximum price of a 20kg flour bag in the country is Rs3,133. In Karachi, the price increased by up to Rs100 to reach Rs3,000. In Larkana, the price of a 20kg flour bag also increased by up to Rs100 during the week reaching Rs2,600 in Khuzdar and Larkana. In Sukkur, the price of a 20kg flour bag increased by Rs60 while in Bannu it increased by Rs50. Following the increase, the price of a 20kg flour bag reached Rs2,950 in Bannu and Rs2,560 in Sukkur. In Islamabad, the price of a 20kg flour bag reached Rs3,133 while it stood at Rs3,100 in Peshawar and Rs3,093 in Rawalpindi. According to the PBS, a 20kg flour bag was priced at Rs2,960 in Bahawalpur while it reached Rs2,800 in Hyderabad, Multan, Sialkot and Gujranwala. In Sargodha, the price of a 20kg flour bag reached Rs2,793. In Quetta, a 20kg flour bag was priced at Rs2,750 while the price stood at Rs2,300 in Lahore and Rs2,200 in Faisalabad.

    Police have arrested a husband and wife in Punjab’s Layyah district in connection with a Karachi murder case involving the killing and burning of a man’s body. According to police, the Keamari Investigation Police arrested the alleged main suspects during an operation in Layyah. The case relates to the murder of Faizan alias Faizi in the Mochko area of Karachi in April. Police said the victim was allegedly killed and his body was set on fire. The remains were completely burned and were later identified as those of Faizan. A case had initially been registered against unidentified suspects at the Mochko police station. A special investigation team was formed to investigate the incident. Using technical investigation methods, police had previously arrested two suspects identified as Akram, the victim’s father-in-law, and his son, Ataullah. Police said the alleged main suspects, identified as security institution employee Joon Abbas and his wife, Samreen, had fled and remained in hiding following the incident. The investigation team reportedly traced the couple through technical means and arrested them in Layyah. Further investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the murder and the alleged burning of the body.
