The limits and depth of human consciousness

For millions of years, the survival of living species depended almost entirely on practical adaptations. The core of living was finding food, securing shelter, avoiding predators, and reproducing. Yet, at a crucial juncture in evolutionary history, Homo sapiens began engaging in a behavior that offered no immediate physical utility like making art. From red ocher hand stencils on cave walls in Sulawesi and Western Europe to intricate bone flutes and sculpted figurines, early humans devoted valuable time and energy to symbolic creation. Today, neuroscientists, cognitive psychologists, and evolutionary anthropologists increasingly view art not as a secondary cultural luxury, but as a foundational hallmark of human consciousness.

The Evolutionary Emergence of Symbolic Thought

The birth of artistic expression marks a profound cognitive transition. While many animals exhibit complex behaviors, these actions are largely instinctual and functional. Human art, by contrast, relies on abstract symbolic thinking. The capacity to let one object, shape, or sound represent an idea, emotion, or absent reality.

When an early human carved a figure or painted a thundering herd of bison onto rock, they were not merely copying their surroundings. They were projecting an internal mental world onto an external physical canvas. This ability to externalize subjective experience required a sophisticated architecture of consciousness, including robust working memory, metacognition (thinking about one’s own thinking), and a developed theory of mind. It’s the understanding that others possess distinct mental states and can interpret shared symbols.

The Neurobiology of Aesthetic Experience

Modern neuroimaging reveals that creating and contemplating art engages large-scale, interconnected brain networks. When a person immerses themselves in a painting, music, or literature, the Default Mode Network (DMN) works with sensory and emotional circuits.

Artistic engagement triggers a dynamic dialogue between the visual or auditory cortex, the limbic system (which processes emotion), and executive regions in the prefrontal cortex. This complex cross-talk allows humans to experience qualia. The subjective, qualitative feel of conscious experiences. A visual composition does not simply register as light wavelengths in the brain; it evokes nostalgia, awe, melancholy, or inspiration. This capacity to synthesize raw sensory inputs with deep emotional resonance and reflective thought is a unique feature of high-level conscious awareness.

Lived Experience versus Machine Patterning

In an era dominated by artificial intelligence algorithms capable of generating hyper-realistic images and musical compositions in seconds, the relationship between art and consciousness has taken on renewed urgency. While generative models analyze billions of data points to predict and replicate aesthetic patterns, they operate entirely without subjective awareness, intent, or emotional feeling.

Human art originates from a grounded biological reality: the lived experience of mortality, joy, heartbreak, bodily sensation, and social existence. The power of a masterpiece lies not merely in its formal technique, but in the implicit bridge it constructs between the inner world of the artist and that of the observer. Art is fundamentally a dialogue of consciousnesses. It is a mechanism through which one conscious entity communicates what it feels like to exist.

A Mirror to Human Identity

Ultimately, art serves as both a product and a mirror of conscious awareness. It enables individuals to simulate hypothetical scenarios, process complex social dynamics, and navigate existential questions about purpose and mortality. By translating internal emotional states into tangible forms, humans construct shared cultural meaning and foster deep social cohesion.

 

As science continues to explore the mystery of how physical brain matter generates subjective experience, art remains our most visible and enduring cognitive fingerprint. It stands as compelling proof that human consciousness is defined not just by how we perceive the objective world, but by our infinite capacity to imagine and construct new ones.

    Press freedom across South Asia faces significant structural constraints. Media environments throughout the region share a common historical legacy often relying on inherited colonial-era penal codes alongside modern cybersecurity legislation. However, the legal frameworks and regulatory instruments used to govern the press vary across neighboring countries. Comparative Analysis by Country  Pakistan Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), and administrative policy frameworks like the Foreign Media Facilitation Guidelines. Media regulation in Pakistan relies heavily on administrative controls, licensing restrictions, and broad content advisories prohibiting coverage of sensitive political or national security subjects. While constitutional protections exist under Article 19, exceptions based on glory of Islam, national defense, and public order give authorities broad latitude to issue blackout orders, manage foreign correspondents’ mobility through No Objection Certificates (NOCs), and impose structural pressure on broadcast networks.  India Information Technology Rules (2021), Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). While India possesses a large and diverse private media market, journalists increasingly face legal scrutiny under broad national security and anti-terror legislation. Amendments to digital media laws allow central authorities to demand the takedown of online content deemed harmful to state interests. Furthermore, criminal defamation suits and restrictions on access to conflict areas (such as Jammu & Kashmir) remain common mechanisms of regulatory pressure. Sri Lanka’s regulatory framework expanded significantly with the passage of the Online Safety Act, which created a government-appointed commission with sweeping powers to classify online content as false statements and order its removal. Critical reporting regarding state response to economic crises or wartime history continues to face legal and physical friction in sensitive provinces. Nepal: Press Council Act and National Mass Communications Policy. Nepal consistently ranks highest in South Asia on global press freedom indices, supported by a constitution that explicitly guarantees press rights without prior restraint. However, challenges persist regarding local government transparency, criminal defamation provisions, and proposed social media regulation bills that civil society groups fear could introduce licensing hurdles for digital outlets.  Afghanistan Direct directives issued by the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice and the Ministry of Information and Culture. Following the political shift in 2021, independent journalism in Afghanistan has faced near-total suppression. Women journalists are largely banned from broadcasting, international news services face widespread blocking, and all local reporting is subject to strict pre-publication censorship. Common Trends Across the Region Across South Asia, governments are increasingly shifting control from traditional print/broadcast regulators toward cybersecurity, online safety, and data protection laws to monitor digital newsrooms and independent creators. Constitutional guarantees of free speech throughout South Asia uniformly contain broad public order and national defense exceptions, which states routinely cite to enforce reporting restrictions during regional crises. Beyond direct legal action, states across the region frequently utilize non-judicial levers such as withholding state advertising funds, slow-walking accreditation, or requiring special travel permits to shape editorial stances.

Use garlic Garlic is also commonly used to keep lizards away because of its strong smell.  You can place a few garlic cloves near corners windows or other possible entry points. The strong smell may help discourage lizards from coming into these areas. Keep the House clean Home remedies alone may not be enough.  Keeping your house clean is one of the best ways to reduce lizard visits. Avoid leaving food uncovered and clean crumbs or leftover food quickly. It is also important to control insects because mosquitoes flies and other small bugs are a major food source for lizards. By keeping the home clean reducing insects and blocking possible entry points you can make your home less attractive to lizards.

    The Rise of Diseases

    The increasing number of diseases has become a serious concern in Pakistan. Dengue, malaria, hepatitis and many other illnesses are spreading due to poor sanitation polluted water air pollution and a lack of public awareness.   Hospitals are becoming overcrowded while many people cannot afford proper medical treatment. The government should improve healthcare facilities, ensure cleanliness, provide safe drinking water and conduct awareness campaigns on disease prevention.   Citizens also have a responsibility to maintain hygiene keep their surroundings clean and follow basic health precautions. Good health is the foundation of a strong nation. If immediate steps are not taken the rise of diseases will continue to threaten the well being of our people

  • Plants reach Space as scientists study growth in orbit

    Green plants have now made their way to the International Space Station. NASA astronaut Jessica Meir who is commanding Expedition 75 aboard the International Space Station has shared pictures of the plants on social media platform X. Jessica Meir said that the Expedition 75 crew has welcomed some new members and they are none other than Russian plants. She explained that the plants include Red Russian kale and wasabi mustard. The crew members are taking care of the plants during their free time. The astronaut explained that the purpose of the experiment is to understand how plants grow in the open cabin environment of the International Space Station compared with their natural environment. The research also aims to examine how storing seeds in orbit affects their viability or ability to successfully grow. Jessica Meir added that having plants aboard the spacecraft feels like a form of “nature therapy.”

    In 1915, Albert Einstein published his ground-breaking theory of general relativity, radically altering humanity’s understanding of gravity. Rather than treating gravity as an invisible pulling force between masses, Einstein demonstrated that heavy objects warp the very fabric of space and time. Soon after, physicists realized that Einstein’s field equations contained a dramatic prediction. If enough mass were compressed into a small enough region, space-time would curve so intensely that nothing, not even light, could escape. However, Einstein himself remained deeply skeptical of these mysterious cosmic objects, which would later be named black holes. He believed that such extreme entities were merely theoretical mathematical artifacts products of idealized, perfectly symmetrical equations that could never exist in the chaotic reality of the actual universe. Einstein argued that real collapsing stars, possessing natural asymmetries and rotational forces, would scatter or bounce rather than implode into a point of infinite density. The Breakthrough of 1965 Ten years after Einstein’s death in 1955, a British mathematician and physicist named Roger Penrose forever settled the debate. In a revolutionary 1965 paper, Penrose provided the first rigorous mathematical proof that black holes are not merely theoretical curiosities, but robust and inevitable consequences of general relativity. Penrose realized that traditional analytical methods were insufficient to tackle the messy reality of stellar collapse. Instead, he introduced novel geometrical and topological concepts to physics, most notably the concept of a trapped surface. A trapped surface is a two-dimensional closed boundary where all light rays, regardless of whether they are directed inward or outward, are forced to converge toward the center. Once a collapsing star forms a trapped surface, an event horizon is established, creating a point of no return. Penrose proved that as long as gravity remains attractive and energy remains positive, the collapse cannot be stopped by any physical force or asymmetrical shape. The collapsing matter is driven relentlessly toward a singularity: a central region where density and space-time curvature become infinite, and where classical physics breaks down entirely. Transforming Astrophysics and Modern Cosmology Penrose’s singularity theorem fundamentally altered how scientists viewed the cosmos. It proved that black hole formation is a robust phenomenon that regularly occurs across the universe whenever massive stars exhaust their nuclear fuel and collapse under their own gravitational weight. Furthermore, Penrose’s mathematical techniques opened completely new avenues of theoretical research: The Big Bang Origin: Inspired by Penrose’s methods, a young Stephen Hawking applied similar topological techniques in reverse to show that the entire universe must have originated from an initial space-time singularity at the moment of the Big Bang. Penrose Diagrams: Penrose introduced conformal visual diagrams that allowed physicists to map out the infinite causal structures of space-time on manageable two-dimensional surfaces. The Information Paradox: Defining the strict causal properties of black hole event horizons laid the groundwork for decades of theoretical inquiry into how quantum mechanics interacts with extreme gravity. From Theoretical Paper to Nobel Prize For decades, Penrose’s work remained largely theoretical because observational technology could not directly detect black holes. However, in the 21st century, astrophysics caught up with Penrose’s mathematics. Ground-breaking discoveries—such as the detection of gravitational waves from colliding black holes by LIGO in 2015 and the Event Horizon Telescope’s first direct image of a black hole’s shadow in 2019—provided unequivocal empirical evidence supporting his theory.   Recognizing the immense impact of his 1965 breakthrough, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded Roger Penrose half of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics. More than half a century after its publication, Penrose’s paper stands as the single most critical contribution to general relativity since Einstein’s original masterpiece, proving that the most extreme objects in the universe are a tangible reality.
