The prime minister made the remarks during a meeting in Islamabad with a nine-member JICA delegation led by its President, Dr Tanaka Akihiko. He said Pakistan deeply values its decades-long partnership with Japan and expressed confidence that the latest engagement would further strengthen bilateral development ties. Highlighting the government’s economic agenda, Shehbaz said Pakistan had emerged from a challenging economic period through coordinated reforms and was now focused on achieving sustainable and inclusive growth. He noted that fiscal reforms had significantly improved revenue collection over the past three years, creating greater capacity for national development. The premier stressed that equipping young people with modern skills, expanding technical and vocational education, creating employment opportunities and empowering women remain among the government’s highest priorities. He said Pakistan is keen to benefit from JICA’s expertise in these sectors. Shehbaz also identified the country’s vast mineral resources as a major area of economic potential and invited JICA to provide technical assistance to help develop the sector and attract greater investment. Discussing support for businesses, the prime minister said reforms at the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) had strengthened the institution. He expressed hope that enhanced cooperation with JICA would help improve SME productivity, encourage entrepreneurship and boost Pakistan’s exports. During the meeting, Shehbaz also conveyed condolences over the recent earthquake in Japan. Dr Tanaka thanked the prime minister for his message of sympathy and appreciated the warm hospitality extended to the Japanese delegation during its visit. The JICA president reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Pakistan in healthcare, education, urban and rural development, industrial growth and technical training. He requested technical assistance for feasibility studies of major infrastructure projects, an area in which JICA expressed readiness to cooperate.

Bel Powley speaks out against J.K. Rowling’s views on gender

Bel Powley has publicly voiced her disagreement with J.K. Rowling’s views on gender while continuing to express her affection for the Harry Potter franchise. Powley, who is set to portray Aunt Petunia Dursley in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television adaptation, discussed her stance during an interview with The Telegraph published on Monday, August 10. The actress is also attached to the series as an executive producer. Speaking about Rowling’s controversial comments regarding gender and transgender people, Powley made it clear that she does not share the author’s perspective. “I strongly disagree with J.K. Rowling’s views on gender,” Powley said, adding that she believes the transgender community deserves “safety and dignity and respect and total acceptance.” Despite her disagreement with Rowling, Powley emphasized that her feelings toward the Harry Potter books and their magical world remain unchanged. The actress recalled growing up with the novels and described herself as part of the first generation of readers who experienced the franchise as it became a global phenomenon. “But I love Harry Potter,” Powley said. “I grew up with the books. I am from that first generation of readers and, again, I love magic and spookiness.” Her comments come amid years of controversy surrounding Rowling’s public statements about gender identity and transgender rights. The author first faced widespread criticism in 2020 after making comments that were viewed by many as dismissive of transgender identities. Rowling has repeatedly rejected accusations that she is hostile toward transgender people. She has defended her position by describing it as rooted in her concerns about women’s rights and feminism. Her statements have continued to generate debate among fans, celebrities and members of the entertainment industry. Powley’s remarks highlight the complicated relationship some Harry Potter stars and fans have with the franchise. While the series remains deeply meaningful to many people who grew up with the books and films, Rowling’s public views have also created divisions among sections of its audience. Meanwhile, HBO’s new Harry Potter adaptation is moving forward with a new generation of actors taking on the beloved characters. The first season will feature Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Janet McTeer will play Professor Minerva McGonagall, while Paapa Essiedu will portray Severus Snape. Nick Frost is set to appear as Rubeus Hagrid, Lox Pratt will play Draco Malfoy and Warwick Davis will portray Professor Filius Flitwick. The upcoming series is expected to revisit the story of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, introducing the magical world to a new television audience while offering a fresh interpretation of J.K. Rowling’s bestselling books. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max during the Christmas season of 2026.

Travis Barker, Kourtney Kardashian break silence o…

Travis Barker has explained why he and his wife, Kourtney Kardashian Barker, chose to open up about their difficult journey to parenthood in his new documentary, Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear. The Blink-182 drummer recently discussed the documentary during an appearance on The New York Times’ Popcast. He said the couple decided to share their experiences because they believed their story could help people who had gone through something similar. Barker described their journey as involving pregnancy loss, unsuccessful IVF attempts and eventually welcoming their son Rocky Thirteen naturally in November 2023. He said the experience was something many people could relate to, making it feel worthwhile to discuss publicly. (People.com) Why they chose the documentary One of the biggest questions surrounding the documentary was why Barker and Kardashian decided to discuss their pregnancy loss there instead of on The Kardashians. According to Barker, the answer was largely connected to the documentary’s interview format. He explained that the filmmakers would ask follow-up questions whenever he mentioned something personal. That conversational approach eventually led to the couple discussing their experience. Rather than deliberately planning to tell the story in detail, the subject came up naturally during the interviews. Barker suggested that the documentary provided a different environment from their family reality show, allowing the conversation to unfold in a more personal way. Before his birth, however, the couple experienced pregnancy loss and later went through unsuccessful IVF attempts. The couple first revealed the pregnancy loss during the documentary’s premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in June. Kardashian explained that they had become pregnant relatively early in their relationship and were devastated by the loss. He has previously credited his wife with helping him regain confidence after his traumatic 2008 plane crash and eventually return to flying. (E! Kuwait welcomes Pakistan-Saudi-Türkiye Makkah def…

ISLAMABAD: Kuwait has congratulated Pakistan on the signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, signalling growing regional interest in the new security arrangement. Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar received a telephone call from Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah late on Sunday, during which the two officials discussed the agreement as well as the wider regional situation. According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the Kuwaiti foreign minister felicitated Dar on the agreement signed in Makkah on Friday. The two ministers also exchanged views on developments in the region, including the situation in occupied East Jerusalem. Their conversation also covered bilateral relations and ways to expand cooperation between Pakistan and Kuwait, particularly in investment and other key sectors. The officials also discussed follow-up to Sheikh Jarrah’s recent visit to Pakistan. “The two sides agreed to remain closely engaged,” the Foreign Office said. The development comes as Pakistan continues to explain the objectives and scope of the landmark defence pact, which brings Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye closer together on security matters. Dar has stressed that the agreement is defensive in nature and is not directed against any particular country. Under the pact, an armed attack against any one of the three signatories would be treated as an attack against all three. The foreign minister said the arrangement was designed to strengthen collective deterrence while supporting regional peace, stability and security. He also maintained that the agreement was consistent with the right of individual and collective self-defence recognised under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. Importantly, Dar clarified that the Makkah agreement does not replace or cancel existing bilateral or multilateral defence arrangements involving the three countries. The pact could also have a broader regional dimension. Dar said the agreement remains open to other countries in the region that are willing to respect its principles and resolve differences through dialogue, cooperation and peaceful means. His comments came amid reports that Egypt could potentially join the arrangement. Earlier, Dar also spoke with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, with the two officials discussing regional developments and the newly signed agreement. Pakistan has presented the Makkah accord as part of its broader foreign-policy objective of promoting regional stability and peaceful conflict resolution. With Kuwait now extending its congratulations, attention is increasingly turning to how the new defence framework could influence cooperation and security across the wider region.

Trump reportedly left Türkiye on secret flight amid Iran threat

US President Donald Trump reportedly left Türkiye on a military aircraft during a covert security operation last month. The move was allegedly made because of an Iranian assassination threat. According to a report citing US officials and people familiar with the operation, Trump initially boarded the older Air Force One aircraft in Ankara. Television cameras were present as he departed. Minutes later, however, Trump was reportedly moved to a smaller Air Force C-32A aircraft. The transfer was allegedly carried out using an airport catering truck. The unusual operation was designed to keep Trump’s actual location hidden. The report said the information was not shared publicly. Some journalists and even members of the White House staff were also reportedly unaware of the change. Trump had travelled to Ankara for a NATO summit held on July 7 and 8. The reported security threat emerged during his visit. The operation reportedly took place shortly after US forces resumed strikes against Iran. The strikes followed the collapse of negotiations between Washington and Tehran. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung defended the security arrangements. He said the aircraft being used as Air Force One had been equipped with advanced security measures. Cheung said the president faced threats from several enemies of the United States. He added that the administration was using all available measures to protect him. The reported security operation comes as tensions between the United States and Iran remain high. Trump has continued to leave open the possibility of stronger military action against Tehran. Oil prices rise amid escalation fears Global oil prices also climbed sharply as markets reacted to Trump’s latest comments on Iran. Brent crude rose around 5% on Monday. It reached about $87.70 per barrel, its highest level in nearly two weeks. US West Texas Intermediate crude also gained around 5.1%. It reached approximately $82.20 per barrel. The rise came after Trump said the United States still had the option of taking stronger action against Iran. Trump told reporters that Washington had the capability to pursue a major escalation if it decided to do so. His comments increased uncertainty over efforts to end the conflict. They also raised concerns about the future of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has claimed that the strategic waterway is open and fully under US control. However, he acknowledged that Iran could still attempt to interfere with maritime traffic. Iran has taken a different position. Tehran has reportedly demanded that the US lift its blockade before it agrees to fully restore the waterway’s operations. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy routes. Large volumes of crude oil and liquefied natural gas pass through the waterway. Any prolonged disruption could therefore put further pressure on global energy prices. Oil prices were also supported by reports of attacks involving energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia and a tanker operated by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. Meanwhile, US crude reserves remained under pressure. Stocks in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve fell below 300 million barrels last week. The reserve was reported at around 298.7 million barrels. It was the lowest level recorded since 1983.

Colombia’s death toll from earthquake climbs…

Rescue crews continue combing through collapsed buildings across western Colombia after a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the region on Monday, August 10, with officials confirming the death toll has risen to at least 164 people. Authorities said more than 880 people have sustained injuries, while over 3,200 remain unaccounted for as soldiers, emergency responders and local volunteers work through debris from dozens of collapsed structures. Thousands of residents have been forced from their homes since the quake struck, adding to the scale of the humanitarian response now underway. The earthquake flattened multi story buildings in cities including Pereira and Cali, and severely damaged one of the towers of a historic cathedral in Manizales. The tremor originated at an intermediate depth with its epicenter located near San José del Palmar in the western department of Chocó, causing widespread destruction across Pereira, Cali, Manizales and other communities in Colombia’s coffee growing region. Residential buildings, hospitals, schools and key infrastructure, including several regional airports, all suffered severe damage in the quake. At one city hospital, several upper floors, including sections dedicated to pediatric care, collapsed inward, trapping some patients inside and forcing hospital staff to treat roughly 600 additional patients outdoors on a street littered with debris, according to hospital director Irne Torres Castro, who spoke to a Colombian television network. That same city saw some of the earthquake’s most extensive destruction, with entire residential blocks reduced to piles of concrete and twisted metal. Video circulating online captured buildings shaking violently as residents fled into the streets, while separate footage showed a regional airport swaying dramatically during the quake as large sections of ceiling came down around people sheltering inside. Among the most widely shared images online is footage showing the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary shaking and partially collapsing. The cathedral, built in the 1920s, holds the distinction of being Colombia’s tallest cathedral and ranks among the highest neo Gothic churches anywhere in the Americas. The disaster struck just days after Abelardo De La Espriella was sworn in as Colombia’s president, immediately confronting his new administration with a major crisis. The earthquake also comes with memories still fresh of a pair of devastating earthquakes that struck neighboring Venezuela in June. Colombia’s national government has declared a state of emergency and mobilized the military, police and specialized rescue units to lead recovery operations, while accepting offers of international assistance as the search for survivors continues. The disaster adds to a string of major seismic events across the region in recent months, underscoring the ongoing vulnerability of Andean nations to powerful earthquakes and the strain such disasters place on emergency infrastructure even in areas with established disaster response systems.
