LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed former South African first-class cricketer Michael Smith as the national team’s new batting coach on a two-year contract, reinforcing the coaching setup ahead of a crucial international season.

Smith, 46, will work with both Pakistan’s red-ball and white-ball squads, with his first assignment set to be the upcoming three-match Test series against England, which begins on August 19.

The PCB officially confirmed the appointment on Tuesday, expressing confidence that Smith’s extensive coaching background and international experience will strengthen Pakistan’s batting unit across all formats.

During his playing career, Smith scored 7,029 runs across first-class, List A and T20 cricket. He also registered nine centuries and 40 half-centuries, establishing himself as a consistent performer in South Africa’s domestic circuit.

Beyond his playing achievements, Smith is regarded as an experienced coach with a Level 4 coaching qualification, one of the highest coaching certifications in cricket. He has previously worked with multiple HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises, giving him valuable insight into Pakistan’s cricketing environment and many of the country’s leading players.

His coaching résumé also includes roles as batting coach for Australia’s Hobart Hurricanes and Cricket Tasmania, where he earned recognition for developing players and improving batting performances.

Smith’s appointment comes at an important time for Pakistan, with the national side preparing for a challenging home Test series against England. The PCB hopes his expertise will help address batting inconsistencies and strengthen the team’s performance in both Test and limited-overs cricket.

Pakistan will begin their three-match Test series against England on August 19, with Smith expected to join the squad during its pre-series training camp.

The appointment reflects the PCB’s continued focus on building a strong coaching structure as the team prepares for a packed international calendar. Fans will now be eager to see whether the experienced South African can make an immediate impact and help Pakistan’s batters deliver more consistent performances on the international stage.

The ISPR said the first operation was launched on August 5 after intelligence agencies detected the movement of six suspected militants in Washuk district. Security forces swiftly moved to the area and engaged the suspects in a targeted operation. Following an exchange of fire, all six militants were killed. A second intelligence-based operation was conducted on August 6 in Mastung district after security forces received information about the presence of armed militants. The ISPR said another six suspected militants were killed during an intense firefight. Security personnel also destroyed a militant hideout during the operation. The military stated that both operations were based on credible intelligence and were part of continuous efforts to eliminate militant networks operating in Balochistan. It added that security forces carried out the missions with precision, preventing the militants from escaping. According to the ISPR, the operations form part of Pakistan’s broader counterterrorism strategy being implemented under Azm-e-Istehkam, the national security initiative approved by the Federal Apex Committee under the National Action Plan. The military reaffirmed that Pakistan’s armed forces, together with law enforcement agencies, will continue intelligence-led operations across the country to eliminate terrorism and dismantle militant infrastructure.

Officials informed the prime minister that Expressions of Interest (EOIs) have already been invited for all three companies. The deadline for investors to submit documents for FESCO has been set for August 7, while submissions for GEPCO will close on August 21. The deadline for IESCO is September 7, 2026. The briefing noted that several international companies have expressed interest in acquiring the power distribution companies. Officials added that roadshows and engagement sessions with potential investors are continuing to attract further investment. Prime Minister Shehbaz also reviewed the proposed privatisation of the Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) and directed authorities to design the transaction in a way that preserves the bank’s vital role in supporting Pakistan’s agricultural sector. He emphasised that the bank should continue providing agricultural loans and financial services to farmers even after privatisation. The prime minister said farmers’ access to financial resources is essential for increasing crop yields and improving agricultural productivity. He further stated that agriculture remains a key pillar of Pakistan’s economy and plays a critical role in ensuring food security. Therefore, any privatisation model should safeguard the sector’s long-term interests while maintaining uninterrupted financial support for farmers.
