Punjab, Korean delegation agree to boost livestock and agriculture cooperation

Lahore – A Korean delegation led by CHO SOK JAE met with Punjab Minister for Livestock and Agriculture Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani. Secretary Livestock Ahmad Aziz Tarar was also present on the occasion.

Additional Secretary Technical Dr. Usman Tahir, Director General Production Dr. Naeem Kanwar, Director Communication Dr. Khaliq Shafi and senior officials of the Agriculture Department also attended the meeting.

The meeting included a detailed discussion on the use of modern technology, mutual cooperation, investment and the promotion of trade relations in the livestock and agriculture sectors.

The Korean delegation said that it was working on advanced technology for first-generation potato seed which could prove to be an effective alternative to the conventional seed currently imported into Pakistan.

According to the delegation, their first-generation seed could help achieve higher yields thereby increasing the productivity and potential of the agricultural sector. The delegation also introduced an advanced blood-based pregnancy testing kit for animals.

According to the delegation, the kit can detect pregnancy in animals through a blood sample as early as 28 days after conception with results available in approximately 30 minutes. The delegation also expressed interest in producing the testing kit locally in Pakistan.

On the occasion, Provincial Minister Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani invited the Korean delegation to invest in Pakistan’s livestock and agricultural sectors. He said that the Punjab government welcomed the promotion of modern technology and international cooperation.

In this regard, the Provincial Minister appointed Director General Production Dr. Naeem Kanwar as the focal person to evaluate the blood pregnancy testing kit and prepare a technical report.

The Provincial Minister directed that the kit be practically tested at government livestock farms and that a comprehensive technical report be prepared and submitted. This would help determine the future course of action regarding the effective use of this technology.

    Security forces have killed five suspected terrorists, including a key commander of Fitna al-Hindustan, during an intelligence-based operation in Balochistan’s Panjgur district, according to security sources. The operation took place in the Sarkini and Chhedgi areas of Panjgur under Operation Radd-ul-Fitna 3. Security forces conducted the raid after receiving intelligence about the presence of armed militants in the area. Their activities had created fear and insecurity among people in the area. Following the successful operation, security forces have launched a clearance operation in the surrounding areas to locate and eliminate other members of the militant network. Officials said the security operation would continue until the area was fully cleared of remaining threats. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi praised the security forces for their successful intelligence-based operation in Panjgur and commended their professional capabilities. Naqvi said the country’s security personnel remained a source of pride for the nation and were working to eliminate terrorism from Balochistan. He said the entire nation stood united against terrorism and supported the security forces in their efforts to restore peace and stability. The latest operation comes as security forces continue intelligence-led actions against militant groups across Balochistan as part of broader counterterrorism efforts.

    Lahore – The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has issued No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) to national cricketers to participate in overseas leagues. The PCB has issued NOCs to Hasan Nawaz, Hunain Shah, Naseem Shah and Usman Khan to play in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). In addition, Muaz Sadaqat, Sahibzada Farhan, Sufiyan Muqeem and Shadab Khan have also been granted permission to participate in the CPL. The NOCs have been issued for the period from August 19 to September 21. Spinner Nauman Ali has been granted an NOC to play for Lancashire County until September 27 while wicketkeeper-batter Muhammad Haris has received an NOC for the CPL from August 7 to September 20. Mystery spinner Usman Tariq has been permitted to play in the CPL from August 8 to September 18 while Usama Mir has been issued an NOC for the CPL from August 7 to September 21.

    Dallas conference backs UN-led Kashmir settlement

    DALLAS: A conference in Dallas, Texas, has called for a peaceful and lasting settlement of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions. The conference was organised by Friends of Kashmir to mark the anniversary of India’s 2019 decision to revoke the special constitutional status of Jammu and Kashmir. Members of the Pakistani and Kashmiri diaspora, community leaders and representatives of Sikhs for Justice attended the event. Pakistan’s Consul General in Houston, Aftab Chaudhry, was the chief guest. Friends of Kashmir International Chairperson Ghazala Habib presided over the gathering. Speakers expressed solidarity with the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). They also voiced concerns about the situation in the region following the revocation of Article 370 and Article 35A. Addressing the participants, Chaudhry said Pakistan would continue providing diplomatic, political and moral support to the Kashmiri people. He said India’s decision to revoke the region’s special status had added further complexity to the long-running Kashmir dispute. Ghazala Habib urged the international community to pay greater attention to the concerns and rights of Kashmiris. She also highlighted cooperation between Kashmiri and Sikh communities in raising issues related to justice and human rights. Other speakers, including Aftab Siddiqui, Syed Fayaz Hasan, Ghulam Jahangra and Dr Fareeha Qazi, called for stronger international efforts to address the Kashmir dispute through peaceful means. Gurvinder Singh, who represented the Sikh community, stressed the importance of involving younger generations in campaigns focused on justice and human rights. At the conclusion of the conference, participants adopted a resolution calling for an internationally supported and peaceful settlement of the Kashmir issue in line with relevant UN resolutions. The resolution also urged the international community to help protect the fundamental rights of the Kashmiri people and maintain attention on the disputed region.

    Former Sindh Assembly member Ghulam Rasool Anr has approached a court seeking registration of a case against his former wife over alleged fraud, blackmail and death threats. In his petition, Anr said he first became acquainted with the woman through social media. He claimed that whenever he asked her to show her face, she would send him images allegedly generated using artificial intelligence. According to the petitioner, the two got married through a video call on February 23 this year. He said the woman was wearing a veil even on the day of the marriage. Anr claimed that after the marriage, he saw the woman in person and found her appearance completely different from the pictures she had previously sent him. He said that after seeing her face, he distanced himself from her and subsequently divorced her on August 9. The former lawmaker further alleged that following the divorce, the woman began blackmailing him and allegedly threatening to kill him. He has asked the court to direct police to register a case against his former wife and take legal action over the allegations. The court has issued a notice to the police and sought a report by August 17. The allegations contained in the petition have yet to be established in court.

    GUJRAT: A disturbing incident involving newborn twins abandoned in Gujrat has been reported from the Madina Syedan area within the jurisdiction of Sadar Gujrat Police Station. According to rescue officials, a newborn baby boy and girl were found after allegedly being abandoned inside a shopping bag. The infants were subsequently handed over to Child Protection Gujranwala for care and protection. Doctors who examined the newborn twins said that both babies were in good health. The children are now under the supervision of the relevant child protection authorities as further arrangements are being made for their care. Police have reportedly traced the woman believed to be the mother of the newborn twins. She is currently under police custody while receiving treatment at a hospital. Authorities have initiated legal proceedings against the woman, while investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. According to police sources, the initial investigation suggests that the woman’s husband had contracted another marriage. Police sources said the alleged abandonment of the twins may have been linked to the distress caused by the second marriage. The reported motive remains part of the preliminary investigation, and authorities are expected to gather further evidence before reaching a final conclusion about what led to the incident. The case has drawn attention to concerns surrounding the safety and protection of newborn children. Child protection authorities are currently responsible for the welfare of the two infants following their recovery. The newborn twins abandoned in Gujrat were reportedly found in a vulnerable situation, but rescue officials said both children were healthy when they were transferred to the child protection authorities.     JERUSALEM: Israel has withdrawn the entry permits of several American Jewish activists who took part in protests in the occupied West Bank against attacks on Palestinians and damage to their property, according to a report by US Jewish publication The Forward. Among those affected was activist Sam Sherman, who said his travel permit was canceled while he was participating in a seven-week volunteer programme in Masafer Yatta, where he had been working alongside Palestinian residents. Sherman told the publication that several members of his group received cancellation notices within minutes of one another. He said Israeli soldiers, police and armed settlers had photographed his passport during confrontations that he described as being initiated by settlers. According to Sherman, the activists had been peacefully spending time with local Palestinians but were treated by Israeli authorities as though their presence itself constituted a serious offence. The reported permit cancellations come amid continued tensions in the occupied West Bank, where confrontations involving Palestinians, Israeli settlers and security forces remain a major source of concern.
