Far-right extremism expert Heidi Beirich arrested as US Justice Department expands case against SPLC

The United States Department of Justice has arrested leading far-right extremism expert Heidi Beirich, charging her with financial crimes in an expansion of the federal government’s criminal case against the Southern Poverty Law Centre (SPLC). A superseding indictment returned in Alabama federal court charges Beirich, the former chief financial officer and Intelligence Project director for the SPLC, with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to make false statements to a bank, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. The charges stem from an April indictment against the civil rights organization over a discontinued intelligence programme that paid informants to infiltrate white supremacist groups. Federal prosecutors allege the SPLC secretly funneled donor funds through shell companies and fictitious entities to hide payments made to field sources. The government claims Beirich engaged in a romantic relationship with one informant and oversaw the transfer of $140,000 in donor funds into a shared bank account. Beirich, who currently serves as chief strategy officer and co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism, denied the allegations through her legal counsel. Defense attorney Michael Proctor characterized the prosecution as politically motivated retaliation against an expert who dedicated decades to dismantling white supremacist movements. A federal judge in Alabama permitted the broader case against the SPLC to proceed last week after rejecting arguments requesting a dismissal on grounds of vindictive prosecution.

Trump saves toddler from stage tumble, can’t resist a Biden dig

President Donald Trump found himself in a viral moment after a sweet interaction with a toddler took an unexpected turn. What started as a heartwarming scene at a Nevada event ended with a jab at former President Joe Biden. The moment unfolded when Trump invited Sandra and Brad, a couple from Las Vegas, onstage along with their two children. They were there to help promote his “no tax on tips” plan and his Trump Accounts proposal. As Sandra began addressing the crowd, their toddler suddenly bolted toward the edge of the stage. Trump reacted quickly, reaching out and pulling the child back to safety before anything could go wrong. Once the child was secure, Trump did not miss the chance for a joke. He remarked that he did not want the boy ending up like Biden and falling off the stage, a line that got the audience laughing. That was not the only memorable part of the appearance. Later, Sandra told Trump her son had something he wanted to say to him. Trump turned his full attention to the boy, clearly enjoying the moment. According to Fox News, the toddler leaned into the microphone and thanked Trump for his “Trump Account.” The crowd responded with loud applause. It was Trump’s Biden joke, though, that really took off online. Clips of the moment spread fast across social media, drawing a mix of reactions from viewers. Some found it genuinely funny. One user called it the funniest thing they’d heard all year, praising Trump’s sense of humour. Another agreed, saying the president has real comedic timing. Not everyone was amused, though. One critic questioned why Trump seems so fixated on bringing up Biden and Obama at nearly every public appearance. Whether people found it charming or grating, the moment has kept Trump in the headlines yet again, this time for something a little lighter than usual.

Injection marks found on woman who died at Lahore …

Medical board sources have revealed that injection marks were found on the arm and wrist of one of the two women who died at Township Police Station in Lahore. According to sources, around three and a half hours passed between the time the women were brought to the police station and their deaths. The sources said there was no significant difference in the post-mortem reports of the two women. The exact cause of death, however, has not yet been established. Police sources said the two women were not searched after being brought to the police station. They added that no female police personnel were present when the women were brought to the station. According to sources, both women were brought to the police station following a call made to emergency helpline 15. They reportedly remained seated near the station’s muharrir for around two hours. The muharrir was preparing to send the women to the female lock-up when the situation changed, sources said. Police officials said a case had been registered and the women were subsequently handed over to the investigation wing. They were reportedly being prepared for transfer to jail when both women collapsed. Sources further said there was no CCTV camera installed in the room of the investigation wing where the women were present. Police said female officers assigned to the station were deployed on duty at Data Darbar at the time. Officials maintained that women are searched before being placed in the female lock-up. Experts said the actual cause of death can be determined through forensic examination of samples collected during the investigation. The deaths have raised questions about the circumstances in which the women died while in police custody. Authorities are expected to rely on forensic evidence, post-mortem findings and other available evidence to establish the exact cause of death.

Over 1,300kg explosives used in deadly Tank attack…

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, July 26: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has revealed that more than 1,300 kilogrammes of explosives were used in the recent attack on a security checkpost in Tank. The governor made the remarks while speaking to journalists at the Regional Police Office in Dera Ismail Khan. He had attended a security briefing on the law and order situation in the region. Kundi described the attack on the Manji Khel checkpoint as a major and tragic security incident. He said 15 people, including 14 security personnel, lost their lives in the attack. Personnel from the Pakistan Army, police and Forest Department were among those who were martyred, he said. The governor said the huge quantity of explosives used in the attack reflected the seriousness and scale of the militant threat facing the province. He called for a united national strategy to counter terrorism. He said the federal and provincial governments, security forces and the public must work together to defeat militant groups. Kundi said Pakistan was facing security challenges from both internal and external sources. He praised the sacrifices made by security forces to protect the country and its people. The governor also alleged that terrorist groups were using Afghan territory to carry out attacks against Pakistan. He further claimed that weapons left behind in Afghanistan by international forces were being used in attacks, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Kundi said neither the people nor the security forces would be intimidated by such attacks. He praised the courage of injured personnel whom he met during his visit. He said the recommendations presented by regional police officials would be conveyed to the federal government. He also said he would raise the issue of improving compensation and support packages for injured security personnel with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and the provincial government. The governor stressed that supporting the families of martyred and injured personnel was a collective responsibility. He assured them that the government would continue to support them. Kundi also called for stronger coordination between the federal and provincial governments. He said Islamabad and Peshawar must work closely to tackle the growing security threat. He urged authorities to expand intelligence-based operations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said he would discuss the matter with the provincial chief minister. According to the military’s media wing, militants had attempted to breach the perimeter of the joint police checkpost in Tank. Security forces responded quickly and killed 12 attackers. The attackers also drove an explosives-filled vehicle into the checkpoint’s perimeter wall. The resulting blast caused extensive damage to the infrastructure. The Tank attack comes as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continues to face a persistent threat from militant violence. In another recent operation in South Waziristan, security forces foiled a suicide attack and killed four terrorists, including the would-be suicide bomber. Kundi said restoring peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and surrounding areas remained a national priority. He praised police personnel for continuing to perform their duties despite difficult security conditions.

Daniel Siad, modelling scout with ties to Epstein,…

Daniel Siad, a modelling scout whose name appeared nearly 2,000 times in the Epstein files released by the US Department of Justice, was found dead at his home outside Paris on Wednesday, prosecutors said. His body was reportedly discovered in the kitchen by a woman staying with him, and a neighbor reportedly attempted CPR without success. Siad’s death comes amid a wide-ranging probe into human trafficking and tax fraud opened in February following the release of the Epstein files. Since the investigation began, 24 women have come forward as victims or witnesses of alleged acts committed by Siad or others, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said in a statement. As part of the probe, Siad had been subjected to special scrutiny, though he had repeatedly proclaimed his innocence. Siad’s lawyer, Arab-Tigrine, told Reuters that Siad had asked on several occasions to be heard by French judicial authorities, but that no action was taken. She confirmed that Siad had died of a heart attack. Siad is the second man publicly linked to Epstein who has died in France. In 2020, French authorities arrested modelling agent Jean-Luc Brunel after allegations he procured women for Epstein. Brunel was found hanged in his prison cell in 2022, having spent 14 months in custody awaiting trial on charges of rape of minors and sexual harassment. He denied the charges, along with any participation in Epstein’s sex trafficking. The Epstein files, released by the US Department of Justice, have revealed extensive connections between the late financier and individuals in the modelling and entertainment industries. Epstein, who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, had a long history of exploiting young women and maintaining a network of powerful associates. The release of these documents has reignited debates about accountability and the extent of Epstein’s influence. Siad’s death raises questions about the circumstances surrounding his passing and the ongoing investigation into his activities. His lawyer’s statement that he had sought to be heard by authorities suggests a desire to clear his name, but his sudden death has left many unanswered questions. The French authorities have not yet released further details about the investigation into Siad’s activities, but the probe continues as more victims and witnesses come forward. The deaths of Brunel and Siad have drawn attention to the high-profile individuals connected to Epstein who have died under unusual circumstances. While both men denied the allegations against them, their deaths have fueled speculation about the extent of Epstein’s network and the pressure faced by those connected to him. As the investigation continues, the public will be watching closely for any further developments in the case. Siad’s death marks another chapter in the ongoing saga of the Epstein scandal, which has exposed the dark underbelly of the modelling and entertainment industries and raised questions about the accountability of those who enabled Epstein’s crimes. The investigation into Siad’s activities and the broader network of individuals connected to Epstein is likely to continue, with the hope of bringing justice to the victims and shedding further light on the extent of Epstein’s influence.
