Brazil’s Lula announces fourth-term campaign…

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has launched his campaign for a fourth term at a Workers’ Party convention in Sao Paulo, confirming it would be his final bid for office.

Centring his platform on global affairs and national defence, the 80-year-old leader pledged to increase military spending and protect the country’s vast rare earth mineral reserves. He warned foreign powers that Brazil would not permit nations like China, France, or the United States to access these resources without respecting territorial sovereignty.

Lula currently holds a slight lead in opinion polls against his likely main challenger, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro.

15 newborns killed in fire at PIMS nursery in Isla…

ISLAMABAD: At least 15 newborn babies were killed after a fire broke out at the nursery of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad early Wednesday morning. According to rescue officials, the fire erupted at around 6:45am on the third floor of the hospital’s Mother and Child Health (MCH) ward. The blaze reportedly started after an air-conditioning unit exploded and spread rapidly through the nursery. PIMS authorities said 16 babies were present in the nursery when the fire broke out. Fifteen newborns died in the incident, while one baby was successfully rescued. Rescue officials said the fire was brought under control and cooling operations were initiated afterward. Six fire engines and four ambulances took part in the rescue operation after emergency teams reached the hospital soon after receiving the alert. According to the district administration, 14 babies suffered severe burns in the incident. An investigation committee headed by the additional deputy commissioner has been formed to determine the exact cause of the fire and establish how the tragedy occurred. The MCH ward was later sealed as authorities began examining the scene. Parents of the deceased babies alleged that hospital staff were not present inside the incubation centre when the fire broke out. The allegations are expected to form part of the investigation into the incident. Federal Minister for Health Mustafa Kamal confirmed that at least 14 deaths had been reported, while other officials put the death toll at 15. He said the Director General Health and hospital secretary were present at the facility and were coordinating with the families of the victims. Speaking about the incident, Kamal said the fire started at around 6:45am following an explosion in an air-conditioning unit. He said the blaze spread extremely quickly and the hospital’s electricity supply was also disrupted immediately after the explosion. The minister said doctors and staff were present in the intensive care area at the time. According to him, some staff members went to call the rescue service, but the fire spread rapidly before the situation could be brought under control. He added that the hospital’s firefighting equipment was functioning and that PIMS was already operating beyond its normal capacity.

Transporters join fuel dealers’ strike against d…

Transport associations across Pakistan have announced support for the Petroleum Dealers Association’s demands and warned of a possible suspension of transport services following a planned shutdown of petrol pumps. The All Pakistan Public Transport Owners Association said public transport operations could also come to a halt if fuel stations close at midnight. Association President Nadeem Hussain said the transport sector would support the petrol dealers’ stance against the government’s policy of fixing petrol and diesel prices on a daily basis. He demanded that the government withdraw the daily fuel pricing mechanism, saying it has created uncertainty and increased financial pressure on transport operators. Hussain said frequent changes in fuel prices directly affect transport businesses because fuel is one of the biggest operating costs for public transport owners. He warned that a continued increase in petroleum prices could further burden both transporters and passengers. The Pakistan Mini Mazda Goods Transport Association also announced its support for the strike call by petrol station owners. Association President Sher Ali Chaudhry said mini Mazda vehicles would stop operating from midnight as part of the protest against daily increases in petroleum prices. He criticized the government’s decision to revise fuel prices regularly, saying it has made it difficult for transporters to manage expenses and maintain their services. Chaudhry said rising fuel costs have severely affected the transport sector, increasing operational expenses and reducing the income of vehicle owners and drivers. Both transport associations urged the government to reconsider the current fuel pricing policy and take steps to provide relief to transporters.

Iran claims drone strike on US base in Kuwait

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says it will continue military operations aimed at responding to what it describes as acts of aggression against the country. Iranian authorities have also claimed that their forces carried out drone strikes against Camp Doha, a US military facility located in western Kuwait. According to Iran’s Tasnim news agency, the strikes targeted weapons storage facilities and logistical equipment used by US ground forces at the base. The Iranian military said the operation came in response to what it called repeated acts of aggression by the United States. Tehran has maintained that its military actions are intended to deter further attacks and demonstrate its readiness to respond to any threats against Iran. In a statement, Iran’s armed forces said they remain fully coordinated and prepared to confront any new military moves or hostile actions. The statement warned that Iran would deliver what it described as a strong and decisive response to any further aggression. Iranian officials described Camp Doha as an important regional support facility for US military personnel and equipment. The base has historically played a role in supporting American military operations and logistics in the Gulf region. The latest claims come amid heightened tensions in the region, with Iran and the United States continuing to exchange warnings and accusations. Any confirmed attack on a US military facility in Kuwait could further increase security concerns across the Gulf and raise fears of a broader escalation in the region. The claims regarding the reported drone strikes have been attributed to Iranian sources, and independent confirmation of the details was not provided in the original report.
