President approves new high court judges

President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the appointment of additional judges to several high courts across the country, along with the confirmation of certain judges already serving in an additional capacity.

According to a statement issued by the Presidency, the president approved the appointment of additional judges to the Lahore High Court, Sindh High Court and Peshawar High Court. He also gave the go-ahead for appointments to the Islamabad High Court and Balochistan High Court.

The latest decisions are part of the process of strengthening the judicial system and filling vacant or additional judicial positions in various high courts.

In a separate decision, President Zardari approved measures to bring the salaries, allowances and pension benefits of Supreme Court judges on par with those of judges of the Federal Constitutional Court.

The president also approved amendments to the 1997 order governing leave, pension and other benefits available to high court judges. The amendments seek to update the existing framework governing judicial privileges and post-service benefits.

The Presidency further announced that President Zardari approved the appointment of Haroon Akhtar as the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Industries and Production.

The appointment adds another senior figure to the federal government’s economic and industrial policy team, with the industries and production sector remaining a key area for investment, manufacturing growth and economic development.

He appreciated their decision to postpone the strike in the interest of the public and emphasized the importance of resolving issues through consultation rather than confrontation. The minister acknowledged that the country has been facing economic and regional challenges, particularly since developments in the region earlier this year. He noted that the prevailing situation has created uncertainty and concerns for both businesses and the public. According to Ali Pervaiz Malik, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is fully aware of the hardships being faced by citizens and remains committed to minimizing the impact of economic pressures on the people. He further stated that the government has already provided subsidies worth several hundred billion rupees to protect consumers from rising fuel costs. The minister said a targeted subsidy mechanism has been developed to ensure that relief reaches those who need it the most. He also praised oil refineries and petroleum sector stakeholders for their continued cooperation and support during challenging times. Addressing the dealers’ primary demand, Ali Pervaiz Malik confirmed that the issue of increasing petroleum dealers’ profit margins would be resolved through mutual consultation. He announced that a summary regarding the proposed increase in dealer margins would soon be presented to the federal cabinet for approval. The government, he added, is committed to finding a fair solution that balances the interests of both consumers and fuel retailers. The petroleum minister also revealed that the recently introduced daily fuel pricing system would be reviewed after a two-week trial period. During this time, the government will closely monitor its implementation in consultation with petroleum organizations before making any long-term decisions. He emphasized that all stakeholders would continue working together to improve the system and address any operational concerns. Meanwhile, Nadeem Khan, Secretary Information of the Petrol Pump Owners Association, confirmed that the government had assured dealers that their commission and profit margin issues would be resolved. He expressed optimism that the matter would be settled within the next two weeks, allowing dealers to continue operating under more sustainable financial conditions. Nadeem Khan said the associations had decided to postpone their protest based on the government’s commitments. He expressed hope that the authorities would honor their promises and implement the agreed measures within the announced timeframe. He also welcomed the decision to review the daily fuel pricing mechanism on a trial basis, saying it would provide an opportunity to evaluate its impact before any permanent implementation. The successful negotiations have prevented a nationwide disruption in fuel supplies, offering relief to motorists, businesses, and the general public. Both the government and petroleum sector representatives expressed confidence that continued dialogue and cooperation would help resolve outstanding issues while ensuring a stable fuel supply across the country.

    Teacher injured as roof plaster of school caves in

    SUJAWAL:* In a disturbing incident on Wednesday morning, a teacher of Government Boys High School, Begna Mori, within Taluka Jati of District Sujawal, was injured when cement plaster from the staff room fell on him. According to the Senior Head Master of the School, Aziz Allah Dino Khowaja, Junior Elementary School Teacher Fayyaz Zaur was present in the staff room, working on an official assignment, when the roof plaster fell on his head, leaving him critically injured. “As the blood started oozing from his head, we took him to Basic Health Unit Begna Mori for treatment,” said the Senior Head Master, adding that after treatment, the condition of the teacher had become stable. School Teacher Abid Inayat disclosed that the tender for the school’s refurbishment had been passed, and the contractor had demolished a portion of the school comprising three classrooms, but a few months ago he abruptly stopped the renovation work and has been evading resuming work. “Multiple efforts have been made to contact the missing contractor, but he is evading a response,” the teacher said. He further disclosed that the lives of 22 teachers, over a hundred students, and the lower staff had been at stake owing to the ramshackle condition of the building. The school, he said, is one of the schools with high enrollment, and such an incident would leave an adverse effect on the newcomers. The Head Master mentioned that they had approached the District Education Officer (Secondary), Sujawal, and other concerned authorities to ensure the safety of children, but to no avail. He urged the Sindh Minister for Education, Syed Sardar Ali Shah, to take speedy measures for resuming the renovation work of the school and to conduct a thorough probe against the fleeing contractor.

A research team led by American endocrinologist Dr. Elif Oral examined patients with the condition and found that affected fat cells develop significant structural and functional abnormalities. These changes can disrupt the body’s metabolism and contribute to a range of health complications. To better understand the disease, scientists created a mouse model in which the Lamin A/C gene was switched off only in fat cells. This is the same gene known to be affected in individuals with FPLD2. The model allowed researchers to closely examine how defects in fat tissue influence the body’s metabolic processes. Researchers believe the findings could improve understanding of rare fat disorders while also opening new avenues for the development of treatments for diabetes and other metabolic diseases. The study reinforces the idea that healthy fat tissue plays a vital role in maintaining the body’s balance and overall well-being.

    PM Shehbaz’s dialogue offer remains open for PTI

    ISLAMABAD: Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry has urged Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to engage in dialogue with the government, saying Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s invitation for talks remains on the table. Speaking in the Senate, Chaudhry said the government was ready to hold discussions with the opposition if PTI was serious about negotiations. He said opposition leaders could meet the prime minister or raise the matter in parliament. He also suggested that the opposition leader in the Senate could hold discussions with PML-N Senator Rana Sanaullah. Later, Chaudhry, Sanaullah and Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar met Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas and National Assembly Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai at Parliament House. Sanaullah said the meeting was linked to a letter written by Achakzai to Prime Minister Shehbaz. He said the government representatives had met the opposition leaders to discuss the prime minister’s response. The government and PTI have remained politically divided since the 2024 general elections. Disputes between the two sides have included demands for investigations into political protests, as well as issues concerning PTI founder Imran Khan’s health and continued detention. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has also agreed to intensify political contacts with opposition parties. A senior PPP delegation is scheduled to meet Achakzai and Allama Nasir Abbas at the Opposition Leader’s Chamber in Parliament House on Tuesday. The meeting is expected to focus on parliamentary affairs and strengthening political engagement between the government-aligned PPP and opposition leadership. PPP leaders Sherry Rehman, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Saleem Mandviwalla and Naveed Qamar are expected to attend. Naveed Qamar said the talks would focus on strengthening parliament, improving coordination and reinforcing the role of parliamentary committees.
