A nationwide strike planned by Pakistan’s petrol pump owners and fuel dealers has been postponed after successful negotiations with the government. Following the talks, both the Petrol Pump Owners Association and the Petroleum Dealers Association withdrew their strike calls after receiving assurances that their key concerns, particularly regarding profit margins, would be addressed.

The Petrol Pump Owners Association had initially announced that the strike would begin at 12:00 midnight, while the Petroleum Dealers Association planned to suspend operations from 6:00 a.m.However, after reaching an understanding with government representatives, both organizations decided to call off the protest, ensuring that fuel supplies would continue without disruption.

Speaking after the meeting, Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik thanked the All Pakistan Petrol Pump Owners Association and various petroleum dealers’ organizations for their willingness to engage in dialogue. He appreciated their decision to postpone the strike in the interest of the public and emphasized the importance of resolving issues through consultation rather than confrontation.

The minister acknowledged that the country has been facing economic and regional challenges, particularly since developments in the region earlier this year. He noted that the prevailing situation has created uncertainty and concerns for both businesses and the public. According to Ali Pervaiz Malik, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is fully aware of the hardships being faced by citizens and remains committed to minimizing the impact of economic pressures on the people.

He further stated that the government has already provided subsidies worth several hundred billion rupees to protect consumers from rising fuel costs. The minister said a targeted subsidy mechanism has been developed to ensure that relief reaches those who need it the most. He also praised oil refineries and petroleum sector stakeholders for their continued cooperation and support during challenging times.

Addressing the dealers’ primary demand, Ali Pervaiz Malik confirmed that the issue of increasing petroleum dealers’ profit margins would be resolved through mutual consultation. He announced that a summary regarding the proposed increase in dealer margins would soon be presented to the federal cabinet for approval. The government, he added, is committed to finding a fair solution that balances the interests of both consumers and fuel retailers.

The petroleum minister also revealed that the recently introduced daily fuel pricing system would be reviewed after a two-week trial period. During this time, the government will closely monitor its implementation in consultation with petroleum organizations before making any long-term decisions. He emphasized that all stakeholders would continue working together to improve the system and address any operational concerns.

Meanwhile, Nadeem Khan, Secretary Information of the Petrol Pump Owners Association, confirmed that the government had assured dealers that their commission and profit margin issues would be resolved. He expressed optimism that the matter would be settled within the next two weeks, allowing dealers to continue operating under more sustainable financial conditions.

Nadeem Khan said the associations had decided to postpone their protest based on the government’s commitments. He expressed hope that the authorities would honor their promises and implement the agreed measures within the announced timeframe. He also welcomed the decision to review the daily fuel pricing mechanism on a trial basis, saying it would provide an opportunity to evaluate its impact before any permanent implementation.

The successful negotiations have prevented a nationwide disruption in fuel supplies, offering relief to motorists, businesses, and the general public. Both the government and petroleum sector representatives expressed confidence that continued dialogue and cooperation would help resolve outstanding issues while ensuring a stable fuel supply across the country.

    Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has urged Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to apologise for its past statements and criticism directed at Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. Speaking to journalists in Nowshera, Kundi said PTI’s current political position appeared different from its earlier stance towards Fazlur Rehman. He said the party should acknowledge its previous remarks and offer an apology. The governor also criticised PTI’s approach towards the judiciary, saying the party had celebrated certain court decisions in the past but later faced adverse verdicts from the same judicial system. Kundi said PTI supporters had previously distributed sweets when courts issued decisions they considered favourable. However, he noted that subsequent decisions by courts resulted in PTI founder Imran Khan being sent to jail. He argued that political parties should maintain a consistent position on state institutions and should not support institutions only when their decisions favour them. Turning to the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kundi strongly criticised the provincial government and accused it of failing to address the province’s major governance and security challenges. He alleged that political activities and what he described as political drama surrounding Adiala Jail and D-Chowk had continued for years, while the province faced serious issues related to law and order. The governor claimed that the security situation had deteriorated and alleged that the province was being left vulnerable to militants. He said restoring peace and ensuring effective governance should be the government’s primary responsibilities. Kundi also pointed to what he described as a significant change in PTI’s political relationships. He said the party now regarded Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Mahmood Khan Achakzai as important political allies or figures, despite its previous criticism of them. He said the change in political positioning made it even more important for PTI to address its past statements against Fazlur Rehman. The governor’s comments come amid continued political disagreements between the federal and provincial governments, with security, governance and political alliances remaining major areas of contention.

    Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day was celebrated with patriotic spirit at Pakistani diplomatic missions in New Delhi, Dhaka and Tehran. He also paid tribute to the sacrifices made during the Pakistan Movement. Children took part in the New Delhi celebrations. They performed national songs and presented colourful tableaux. Their performances added to the festive atmosphere and reflected their patriotic spirit. Independence Day was also celebrated at the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka. Pakistan High Commissioner Imran Haider hoisted the national flag. The national anthem was played on the occasion. A large number of Pakistanis living in Bangladesh attended the ceremony. Bangladeshi friends also participated. Students, journalists and representatives of civil society were among the guests. Messages from President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar were read out during the Dhaka ceremony. The messages highlighted Pakistan’s national progress, unity and commitment to peace. The high commission also organised an essay-writing competition for Bangladeshi students. The competition was titled “Historical Places of Pakistan”. Prizes and certificates were distributed among the students who participated in the activity. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Independence Day was marked at Pakistan House in Tehran. A flag-hoisting ceremony was held in the Iranian capital. A large number of members of the Pakistani community attended the event. The national flag was hoisted during the ceremony. Participants also celebrated the occasion by cutting a cake. The atmosphere reflected the community’s enthusiasm for Pakistan’s Independence Day. The Pakistani ambassador in Tehran read out the messages of the President and Prime Minister. He also highlighted the contribution of the Pakistani community to relations between Pakistan and Iran. The ambassador said the Pakistani community was playing an important role in strengthening people-to-people ties between the two countries. He said Pakistan and Iran were committed to increasing bilateral trade to $10 billion.
