Does phone charging waste power?

Mobile phones have become an important part of daily life. Many people charge their phones every morning every night or even several times a day.

This often raises a common question •Does charging a phone every day add a lot to your electricity bill?

The simple answer is no. Charging a smartphone uses very little electricity compared to household appliances such as refrigerators fans irons or air conditioners.

The amount of electricity used depends on the phone’s battery size the charger’s power and how long the phone takes to charge.

Even if a phone needs around three hours to fully charge it still uses only a small amount of electricity.

Over the course of a year charging a phone every day usually consumes only a few units of electricity.

Fast chargers may use slightly more power but the difference is very small and is unlikely to make a noticeable impact on your electricity bill.

  • Japan launches cooling shirt with built in fans

Japan is finding a new way to deal with extreme summer heat.  A Japanese clothing company has introduced a formal looking shirt with built in fans that can help keep people cool while they are outside. The company, Yofuku no Aoyama has launched a short sleeved shirt fitted with two small fans. The fans circulate air inside the shirt helping cool the wearer while walking or traveling. At first glance the shirt looks like a normal office shirt. However it has a small cooling system hidden inside. The fans are placed near the lower back and push air through the shirt to reduce heat and discomfort. Cooling clothes with built in fans have become popular in Japan over the past few years. They were mainly used by construction workers garbage collectors, security staff and other outdoor workers.  Most of these products looked like jackets or work vests rather than regular office clothing. With summers becoming hotter demand for cooling clothes is now growing among office workers and other people who spend time outdoors. To meet this demand Yofuku no Aoyama developed the shirt in partnership with FZN a company that specializes in fan powered clothing. The shirt comes with two fans and a rechargeable battery. The company has tried to keep the cooling system as light as possible. Each fan weighs around 95 grams, while the battery pack weighs about 165 grams. The fans are visible from the back but the designers have kept the rest of the system as discreet as possible so the shirt still looks suitable for an office environment. The company has not provided specific information about how loud the fans are so they may not be  completely silent. The shirt is mainly designed for traveling rather than meetings. Most offices and meeting rooms already have air conditioning so there is little need to use the fans indoors. However the cooling system can be useful when employees walk between meetings travel by public transport or spend time outside in hot weather. Increasing fuel prices

From Meer Baloch Through the columns of your respected newspaper, I would like to draw the attention of the concerned authorities to the continuous increase in fuel prices in Pakistan. The rising cost of petrol and diesel has made life difficult for ordinary people. Higher fuel prices increase transportation costs, which also raise the prices of food, medicines, and other daily necessities. Poor and middle-class families are suffering the most because their incomes remain the same while expenses continue to rise. The government should take effective measures to control fuel prices and provide relief to the public. It should also promote affordable public transport and reduce unnecessary taxes on fuel. I hope my letter will create awareness and encourage the authorities to take prompt action.

  • Why your brain may need a phone break

Smartphones have become a major part of everyday life. Many people check their phones as soon as they wake up and continue using them until bedtime. But have you ever wondered how constant phone use may affect your brain? A new study suggests that limiting smartphone use for just 72 hours may lead to changes in brain activity. What did the study find? Researchers from Heidelberg University and the University of Cologne in Germany studied 25 young adults between the ages of 18 and 30. The participants were asked to reduce their smartphone use for three days. They could still use their phones for essential tasks and important communication. Before and after the three-day period the participants underwent MRI brain scans and psychological tests. The researchers noticed changes in brain areas linked to the brain’s reward system and addictive behaviors. How did smartphones affect brain activity? During the brain scans participants were shown different pictures, including smartphones as well as everyday objects such as boats and flowers. After just three days of limited smartphone use researchers observed changes in how certain areas of the brain responded to these images. The findings suggest that our relationship with smartphones may involve more than simple communication.  The desire to check a phone can also be connected to social interaction and the brain’s reward system. Should you take a break from your phone? The study raises an interesting question about how regular smartphone use may affect the brain over time. If reducing phone use for only 72 hours can be linked to changes in brain activity researchers say it is worth exploring what might happen when people reduce their screen time for longer periods. Could a digital detox help? Taking regular breaks from smartphones may be a useful habit. Spending less time on your phone can give you more opportunities to focus on other activities spend time with people and take a break from constant notifications. A simple digital detox may also help you create healthier phone habits and give your mind some much needed time away from the screen. The bottom line Smartphones are useful tools but using them constantly may not be ideal.  Taking short regular breaks from your phone could be a simple way to build a healthier relationship with technology.

  • Why popcorn explodes when heated

Popcorn is a favorite snack for people of all ages, especially during movie nights. But have you ever wondered why only certain corn kernels pop while regular corn does not? Food experts say the answer lies in the kernel’s unique structure moisture and the way it reacts to heat. Not all corn can turn into popcorn. A special type of corn called Zea mays everta is used because its kernels have a hard outer shell and a soft starchy center with a small amount of water inside. Although popcorn kernels look dry they contain about 13–15% moisture. When heated, the water inside turns into steam. Since the outer shell is very strong the steam cannot escape causing pressure to build inside the kernel. As the pressure keeps increasing the kernel acts like a tiny pressure cooker. Eventually the shell bursts with a popping sound.  The hot steam quickly escapes and the soft starch inside expands. Within seconds it cools and forms the fluffy crispy popcorn we enjoy.  A popped kernel can become 30 to 40 times larger than its original size. Sometimes a few kernels do not pop. Experts say this usually happens because they do not contain enough moisture to create the pressure needed to burst. Tiny cracks in the outer shell can also let steam escape too early preventing the kernel from popping.  Heating the kernels at a temperature that is too low may also cause them to dry out before enough pressure builds up. Popcorn can be made in several ways including on the stove in an air popper or in a microwave. Microwave popcorn bags and the oil inside them help spread heat evenly while oil on the stove helps heat the kernels more consistently. Air poppers on the other hand use only hot air and do not require oil. According to food scientists the secret behind perfect popcorn is the combination of a strong outer shell the right amount of moisture steam pressure and the natural expansion of starch when heated.
