Cambodia Blocks Return of Thais at Poipet Border Crossing Indefinitely

BANGKOK – Thousands of Thai nationals remain stranded in the Cambodian border town of Poipet after authorities there indefinitely postponed a promised humanitarian corridor that was scheduled to open on Saturday. The move has left approximately 3,000 Thais who gathered at the checkpoint with their belongings unable to return home.

Cambodian officials had earlier agreed to open the Poipet crossing, opposite Thailand’s Khlong Luek checkpoint in Sa Kaeo province, for a three-hour window on Saturday afternoon to allow the return of Thais, many of whom work in the local casino industry. Thai authorities mobilized a rapid response, deploying buses, trucks, ambulances, and support personnel within 20 minutes to receive the returnees.

However, at the designated 1 p.m. start time, Cambodian officials informed their Thai counterparts that the release was cancelled with no new timetable provided. Thai personnel and vehicles were subsequently withdrawn from the area, and journalists were asked to leave for safety reasons.

The stranded Thais had initially gathered at the border on Thursday, hoping to cross as fighting escalated along the frontier. They were reportedly pushed back from the immediate checkpoint area by Cambodian soldiers. The Thai ambassador in Phnom Penh had formally requested Cambodia’s Interior Ministry to allow their return on humanitarian grounds.

In a related development, Cambodian Senate President and former Prime Minister Hun Sen called on the government on Saturday afternoon to suspend all cross-border travel for both Thai and Cambodian citizens, citing safety concerns. He advised Cambodians working in Thailand and Thais in Cambodia to remain where they are until further notice.

Thai authorities estimate that about 6,000 nationals have sought to leave Cambodia since the latest clashes began. The Thai military’s Burapha Task Force emphasized that it had earlier repatriated over 7,000 Cambodian nationals without conditions, stating that civilians should not be used as leverage in the military conflict.

Meanwhile, fighting continued for a sixth day along the Sa Kaeo border on Saturday. Heavy artillery exchanges were reported in the Ban Nong Chan (Chok Chey) area, with Thai forces conducting operations to retake control. The Burapha Task Force reported that control of the area had not yet been secured, while Thai forces stated they had regained control of Ban Nong Ya Kaeo (Prey Chan), though sporadic fighting continued. The frontline in Ta Phraya district remained quiet.

My laps were good.” All the drivers were battling with a Hungaroring track surface that was breaking up, especially in the final two corners, where Norris said it was especially difficult to judge the grip level. Even before the incident with Verstappen, Russell was afflicted on his final run by a water leak, which was spraying water on to his rear tyres. Mercedes asked him to pull over immediately after crossing the line, and he parked at Turn One, in an attempt to avoid damaging the engine. Antonelli said: “I think we were just slightly out of the window with tyres, then in Q3 we did a good step and the car just felt finally a bit more alive. For sure it was a shame with the yellow flags, but it happens. P3 was on the table today but still not good enough for pole.” The Hungarian Grand Prix promises to be an exciting race, with Norris on pole and Leclerc alongside him on the front row. Hamilton’s penalty has disrupted the grid, but the seven-time champion will be looking to fight his way through the field.     The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) came under pressure on Friday as investors opted to book profits after the market’s recent gains. The benchmark KSE-100 Index fell sharply during early trading, reflecting cautious investor sentiment amid rising global oil prices and uncertainty over developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. The index dropped 771.05 points, or 0.42%, to 181,005.54 by 9:39am. Selling was reported across several major sectors, putting pressure on the overall market. By noon, the KSE-100 had recovered some of its losses and was trading at 181,326.54 points, down 450.05 points, or 0.25%, from Thursday’s close of 181,776.59. During the session, the index moved between an intraday high of 181,647.27 and a low of 180,620.08 points. Trading activity remained moderate, with around 146.05 million shares changing hands. The total value of traded shares stood at approximately Rs10.06 billion. Selling was visible in several heavyweight sectors, including automobile assemblers, cement companies, commercial banks, fertiliser firms, oil and gas exploration companies and oil marketing companies. Market sentiment was also affected by the continued rise in international crude prices. Investors remained cautious over possible disruptions to energy supplies amid tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts attributed the decline largely to profit-taking following the market’s recent strong performance. Investors appeared reluctant to make fresh aggressive positions while global oil prices and geopolitical risks remained elevated. Despite Friday’s decline, the KSE-100 remained above the 181,000-point level, indicating that the broader market continued to retain much of its recent gains.

    ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has approved civil awards for 355 Pakistani and foreign personalities in recognition of their outstanding services and achievements in various fields. The awards will be presented at a special ceremony on Pakistan Day, March 23, next year. The recipients include prominent figures from politics, public service, entertainment, sports, journalism, law enforcement, medicine and other sectors. Among the personalities from the entertainment industry, singers Tarannum Naz and Nisho Begum will receive the Sitara-i-Imtiaz. Actors Ghazala Kaifi, Sania Saeed and Maria Wasti, along with singer Zohaib Hassan, will be honoured with the Tamgha-i-Husn-i-Karkardagi. Singer Shiraz Uppal will receive the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz. In sports, shooter Kishmala Talat and former Test cricketer Sadiq Mohammad will be awarded the Tamgha-i-Husn-i-Karkardagi for their contributions and achievements. Several senior government officials and political figures have also been included in the awards list. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Federal Ministers Ahsan Iqbal and Muhammad Aurangzeb, and Minister of State Bilal Azhar Kayani will receive the Nishan-i-Imtiaz. Director General Intelligence Bureau Fawad Asadullah, Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan, Federal Board of Revenue Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial, Finance Secretary Imdadullah Bosal and Commerce Secretary Jawad Paul will receive the Sitara-i-Imtiaz. Chairman Pakistan Ulema Council Allama Hafiz Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi will be awarded the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz, while Federal Minister Engineer Amir Muqam will receive the Hilal-i-Imtiaz for public service. Zobia Khursheed Raja of Azad Kashmir will receive the Tamgha-i-Shujaat for her bravery in confronting rioters. She reportedly risked her life to rescue an injured police officer who was surrounded by rioters. A total of 46 martyrs of law enforcement agencies will be awarded the Sitara-i-Shujaat. Group Captain Asim Tariq Shaheed will also receive the same honour. Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan CEO Dr Ubaidullah will receive the Sitara-i-Imtiaz, while Punjab Saaf and Suthra Authority Director General Babar Sahib Din will be awarded the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz. Senior journalists Saleh Zafar and Haji Nawaz Raza will receive the Sitara-i-Imtiaz. Journalists Ammar Masood, Maria Zulfiqar, Adil Shahzeb and Hamad Hassan will be honoured with the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz. Two physicians associated with Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Dr Jal Ratanji Patel and Dr Jal Dabu, will be conferred the Nishan-i-Quaid-i-Azam posthumously. The list also includes prominent foreign figures. Saudi Prince Saud bin Naif will receive the Hilal-i-Pakistan, while Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Defence Minister Yasar Guler and Trade Minister Omer Bolat will each be awarded the Sitara-i-Pakistan. Dr Khalid Abbas Al-Asadi and Dr Paul Jacob Bhatti will receive the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz in recognition of their services.

    Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye are expected to sign a joint defence agreement during a trilateral summit in Saudi Arabia, according to media reports. The proposed agreement comes as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Iran. The three countries are expected to discuss regional security, defence cooperation and efforts to promote stability. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir arrived in Saudi Arabia on Thursday for a three-day visit. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is also expected to join the summit. The Pakistani delegation was received in Jeddah by Makkah Deputy Governor Prince Saud bin Mishaal bin Abdulaziz and Saudi Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Abdulmohsen Al-Fadley. Prime Minister Shehbaz and Field Marshal Munir also performed Umrah during their visit. The Foreign Office said the prime minister’s visit, scheduled from August 6 to 8, would focus on Pakistan-Saudi relations and major regional and international developments. During the visit, Shehbaz is expected to meet Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Discussions are likely to cover bilateral cooperation, regional security and diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in the Middle East. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is also part of Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement in the region. Pakistan has been seeking a diplomatic solution to the conflict involving the United States and Iran. Islamabad has also been calling for dialogue and efforts to prevent the regional conflict from spreading further. The proposed trilateral defence arrangement would bring together three countries with longstanding military and strategic ties. It could also strengthen coordination on regional security at a time of heightened tensions. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia already have a separate mutual defence agreement signed in September 2025. Under that pact, aggression against either country is treated as aggression against both. The agreement further strengthened the two countries’ decades-old defence partnership. Pakistan has traditionally provided Saudi Arabia with military training, advisory support and other defence assistance. Saudi Arabia, in turn, has remained an important economic and financial partner for Pakistan and has provided support during periods of financial pressure. The reported trilateral agreement could expand security cooperation beyond the existing Pakistan-Saudi framework and create closer strategic coordination with Turkiye.

    Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has said that the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir have already made their political choice in favour of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). In a statement, Aurangzeb said Mirpur had given its verdict in favour of the PML-N on July 24. She linked the decision to the visit of PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif and party leader Maryam Nawaz to the city. According to Aurangzeb, the response from the people of Mirpur showed their support for the PML-N leadership. She said the people had made their choice clear through their political support. Aurangzeb said the PML-N’s electoral symbol, the lion, had also received strong support. She claimed that by voting for the lion symbol, the people had formally expressed their belief that the development of Azad Jammu and Kashmir was connected with the PML-N. She said the party was committed to the progress and development of the region. Aurangzeb maintained that the public response in different areas was an indication of growing support for the PML-N. The senior provincial minister also referred to the situation in Muzaffarabad. She said the people of Muzaffarabad had already announced their decision on July 21. Aurangzeb said the political choices made in Mirpur and Muzaffarabad reflected the direction of the election campaign. She suggested that the response from voters in both areas had strengthened the PML-N’s position. She further said August 2 would be an important day for the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. According to her, voters would use the lion symbol to formally announce their decision through the ballot. Aurangzeb urged Kashmiris to vote for the PML-N and support its leadership. She presented the party as a force for development and progress in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The statement comes amid the ongoing electoral activity in the region. Political parties are campaigning to win the support of voters ahead of the final voting process. Aurangzeb’s remarks underline the PML-N’s focus on development as a central theme of its campaign. She said the people’s vote would determine the future political direction of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The minister expressed confidence that voters would reaffirm their support for the PML-N on August 2 by voting for the lion symbol.
