President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan’s armed forces have paid tribute to Captain Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed, the first recipient of the Nishan-e-Haider, on his 78th martyrdom anniversary.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Captain Sarwar embraced martyrdom on July 27, 1948, during the first Kashmir war while fighting in the Tilpatra area of Azad Kashmir. His bravery earned him the distinction of becoming Pakistan’s first Nishan-e-Haider recipient.

ISPR said Captain Sarwar led his troops with exceptional courage, strong military strategy and an unwavering sense of duty. The people of Pakistan and the armed forces continue to honour his enduring legacy, which inspires present and future generations to uphold the values of duty, honour and patriotism.

President Zardari said Captain Sarwar sacrificed his life for the cause of Kashmir’s freedom, describing his sacrifice as a timeless example of courage, duty and patriotism. He added that the nation’s martyrs remain a precious national asset and that Captain Sarwar’s name will always be remembered.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also paid tribute to the national hero, saying the entire nation honours his sacrifice for the defence of Pakistan. He said Captain Sarwar fought the enemy with remarkable courage and became the first Pakistani to receive the Nishan-e-Haider for his ultimate sacrifice in the service of the country.

      LAHORE: Former caretaker federal minister and prominent industrialist Dr. Gohar Ijaz has raised serious concerns over Pakistan’s economic direction, warning that growing bank deposits alongside declining industrial activity indicate that capital is moving away from productive sectors.   Speaking to *Minute Mirror*, Ijaz said bank deposits had increased from around Rs. 21 trillion three years ago to Rs. 38 trillion, describing the trend as evidence that people were increasingly choosing to keep their money in banks rather than invest in businesses. He argued that excessive taxation was making industrial activity increasingly difficult. According to Ijaz, an effective tax burden of around 45 percent has discouraged investors and forced several businesses to reduce operations or shut down. “Three years ago, Rs. 21 trillion was lying in banks. Today, it has increased to Rs. 38 trillion,” Ijaz said, arguing that the country needed to encourage investment in manufacturing, exports and employment instead of allowing capital to remain parked in financial institutions. He also claimed that Pakistan could address a significant portion of its external debt if the textile industry received appropriate policy support. Ijaz said the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) had been offering for years to help generate enough foreign exchange for Pakistan to repay $10 billion in debt within one year. According to him, the proposal would require measures such as competitive energy prices, rational taxation, export incentives and a stable policy environment. He maintained that Pakistan’s industrial sector had the capacity to significantly strengthen the country’s foreign exchange position if its competitiveness was restored. Ijaz also criticised what he described as policy distortions in the sugar sector. He alleged that sugar mill-owning families had benefited from additional profits of approximately Rs. 30 billion per month due to pricing mechanisms, subsidies and regulatory decisions. He did not present documentary evidence for the figure during the interview but argued that government policies should prioritize consumers, industrial growth and the national economy rather than benefiting a limited number of influential groups. The former minister further commented on the current political and civil-military leadership, saying the Army and Prime Minister were receiving unprecedented recognition. He expressed optimism that stronger economic policies could enable Pakistan to overcome its financial challenges. Economists and business leaders have similarly pointed to high interest rates, expensive energy, inflation, taxation and policy uncertainty as major factors behind weak private investment. When bank returns appear more attractive and less risky than establishing or expanding businesses, capital can increasingly shift toward financial assets. Industry leaders have therefore called for lower and more predictable taxes, competitive electricity and gas tariffs, faster refunds, fewer ad-hoc duties and incentives for export-oriented manufacturing. Ijaz’s remarks highlight a broader challenge facing Pakistan: having substantial liquidity does not necessarily translate into economic productivity. For the country to generate employment, increase exports and strengthen its ability to repay external debt, more capital needs to flow into productive businesses. The central question, therefore, is whether future economic policies will encourage investment, manufacturing and exports or continue to make bank deposits more attractive than business expansion.

The resumption comes after months of delays, stricter scrutiny and a higher rejection rate that had created difficulties for thousands of Pakistani applicants. Although UAE authorities repeatedly maintained that no blanket ban had been imposed on Pakistani nationals, many travelers experienced lengthy processing times and uncertainty over visa approvals. Travel experts say the biggest improvement has been seen in family applications. Pakistani citizens traveling with family members or visiting relatives in the UAE are reportedly receiving faster responses than before, reflecting a more streamlined processing system. Officials from the travel industry also noted that tourism-related bookings have started to recover as confidence returns. Passenger traffic between Pakistan and Dubai, which had dropped significantly during recent regional tensions and stricter visa checks, has begun to increase in recent weeks, although it remains below previous peak levels. Applicants seeking a UAE visit visa are advised to apply only through registered travel agents and ensure all required documents are complete. A valid passport, recent photographs, proof of accommodation or an invitation from a host, return travel arrangements and evidence of sufficient financial resources are among the documents generally required for processing. Industry representatives believe applicants with complete and genuine documentation are more likely to receive approvals, while family applications currently appear to have stronger prospects.

    The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has sought responses from the federal government and the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports over the reported non-renewal of the passport of Arshad Khan, popularly known as “Arshad Chaiwala.” Justice Umair Majid Malik heard the petition filed by Arshad Khan, with Barrister Umar Ejaz Gilani representing him in court. The petitioner’s counsel told the court that Arshad Khan is an entrepreneur who has promoted Pakistani culture internationally. According to the counsel, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) verification board has already cleared Arshad Khan’s identity. His Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) is also active. The court was informed that Arshad had applied for renewal of his passport on August 20, 2025. However, despite the passage of nearly a year, the renewed document had allegedly not been issued. The lawyer said Arshad had repeatedly contacted the office of the interior secretary to resolve the matter but had not received a satisfactory response. He also informed the court that a legal notice had been served on the interior secretary. Despite the notice, no response was reportedly received. Arshad has asked the high court to direct the authorities to issue his renewed passport without further delay. His petition also seeks a declaration that the continued failure to issue the passport is unlawful and violates his fundamental rights. During the hearing, Justice Umair Majid Malik observed that the court would first obtain the position of the relevant government authorities before examining the matter further. The IHC subsequently issued notices to the Director General Immigration and Passports and the federal government through the interior secretary.

During the meeting, Maryam Nawaz highlighted Punjab’s importance to Pakistan’s economy and agriculture. She said Punjab has the distinction of being the country’s “food basket” because of its major contribution to national food production. The chief minister said Punjab was keen to benefit from China’s experience, technology and expertise, particularly in sectors linked to agriculture and economic development. She proposed launching pilot projects in different parts of Punjab in cooperation with Chinese partners. According to the chief minister, such initiatives could help introduce modern practices and technologies while providing practical models that could later be expanded across the province. The discussions also covered opportunities for closer economic cooperation between Punjab and Xinjiang. Both sides expressed interest in strengthening institutional links and expanding collaboration in areas that can contribute to development and economic growth. Maryam Nawaz said cooperation with China could help Punjab improve productivity and make better use of modern technology. She also stressed the importance of developing partnerships that produce practical benefits for people and businesses. The meeting is part of Maryam Nawaz’s official visit to China, during which Punjab is seeking to strengthen ties with Chinese institutions and explore new areas of cooperation. Xinjiang’s experience in agriculture, infrastructure, water management and modernisation could provide opportunities for Punjab to develop joint projects and exchange expertise. The two sides also discussed the importance of maintaining regular engagement between Punjab and Xinjiang.
