Diphtheria claims 13 children in Sindh as suspecte…

Karachi: Health authorities have raised concerns over the increasing number of diphtheria cases in Sindh after 13 children died from the infectious disease at the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital in Karachi’s NIPA area this year.

The latest figures have intensified public health concerns, coming amid a rise in other infectious diseases across the province. According to hospital data, 30 diphtheria cases have been reported at the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital so far in 2026, with 13 children succumbing to the illness.

Nationwide surveillance data shows that Pakistan recorded 308 suspected diphtheria cases between January and June this year. Sindh reported 113 suspected cases, the highest among all provinces, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 87 cases, Balochistan with 64, Punjab with 35, Islamabad with seven, and Gilgit-Baltistan with two.

Health experts describe diphtheria as a highly contagious bacterial infection that spreads from person to person, particularly among children who are not fully vaccinated. The disease primarily affects the throat and airways and can become life-threatening if left untreated.

Early symptoms include swollen glands in the neck, the formation of a thick gray membrane in the throat, high fever, severe sore throat, and difficulty breathing. Doctors warn that these symptoms should not be ignored, as delayed treatment can lead to serious complications or death.

Medical experts are urging parents to ensure their children receive routine vaccinations and to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of diphtheria appear. They also stress the importance of early diagnosis and timely treatment to reduce the risk of severe illness and prevent further spread of the infection.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while encouraging the public to remain vigilant and follow recommended immunization schedules.

Netanyahu accuses New York Mayor Mamdani of ‘fomenting hate’ and rejects ICC war crimes charges

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has strongly criticised New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, accusing him of “fomenting hate” and attempting to divide the city’s population. The sharp exchange follows comments by Mamdani asserting that Netanyahu is unwelcome in New York City due to ongoing International Criminal Court (ICC) war crimes charges linked to the war in Gaza, and urging federal authorities to execute the court’s arrest warrant when the prime minister attends the United Nations General Assembly in September. Appearing on Fox News Channel, Netanyahu dismissed the ICC charges as “bogus” and claimed the allegations were designed to divert attention from internal misconduct within the prosecutor’s office. He expressed concern over eroding bipartisan support for Israel within the United States, warning that political rhetoric from progressive Democrats risks fueling rising anti-Semitism in major American cities. Despite the mayor’s stance, US President Donald Trump has publicly assured Netanyahu that he will face no risk of arrest during his visits to the United States.

Samsung chip profit soars 250-fold as AI supply deals pile up

Samsung Electronics stunned markets on Thursday with news that its chip division’s profit had surged more than 250-fold. Alongside the results, the company revealed fresh multi-year supply agreements with major data center operators. It also warned that global chip shortages are likely to worsen and could persist well into 2028. That bold forecast, however, was not enough to calm investor nerves. Concerns remain high over the enormous sums tech firms are pouring into AI infrastructure. Samsung’s shares rose as much as 8.4 percent during trading before closing 0.7 percent lower. Even with that dip, the stock outperformed rival SK Hynix, which closed down a sharper 5.6 percent the same day. Kim Seok-hwan, a market analyst at Mirae Asset Securities, said sentiment around chipmakers has shifted. Investors, he noted, are increasingly unsure how long today’s unusually high profit margins can be maintained. This comes right after Samsung’s chip business posted a record-breaking 70 percent operating profit margin. Samsung revealed it has already struck supply agreements with the five biggest data center companies globally. The firm added that it is close to finalizing deals with five more major players, though it did not name them. Jaejune Kim, executive vice president of Samsung’s memory division, told analysts that nearly every client is now asking for long-term, multi-year contracts instead of short-term arrangements. According to Kim, Samsung wants roughly two-thirds of its memory output locked into long-term supply deals. This approach echoes similar moves by SK Hynix, both aiming to shield themselves from the industry’s usual boom-and-bust swings. These new contracts generally span at least five years and often include upfront payments along with guaranteed floor prices, helping companies manage the financial risk tied to heavy capital spending. This announcement follows several rough months for chip stocks, driven largely by investor unease over ballooning AI infrastructure costs and rising competitive pressure from Chinese chipmakers. Both factors have raised doubts about how sustainable current earnings levels really are. Adding to that unease, Meta Platforms disclosed a steep 91 percent drop in its second-quarter free cash flow on Wednesday. That followed an even more striking development from Alphabet the week before, which reported its first-ever quarter with negative cash flow. Together, these results have intensified questions across the industry about whether the current pace of AI spending can hold up much longer without straining company finances.
