LAHORE (July 22, 2026): Director General Sports Punjab Muhammad Tariq Qureshi has announced the names of four women’s teams that will compete in the upcoming CM Punjab Champions League. He made this announcement while addressing a high-level meeting at National Hockey Stadium on Wednesday.
The meeting was attended by Punjab University Director Sports Shabbir Sarwar, Lahore College for Women University Director Sports Sumaira Sattar, Kinnaird College representative Nazish, Deputy Director Zahoor Ahmad, University of Lahore representatives Javed and Irfanullah, along with other officials.
The key meeting was convened to review the preparations for the mega tournament. Former Pakistan women’s cricket team captain Nida Dar attended the meeting and briefed the participants on arrangements and preparations for the women’s competitions.
Addressing the meeting, Director General Sports Punjab Muhammad Tariq Qureshi informed that the four participating women’s cricket teams are – Cholistan Champions, Potohar Pride, Chenab Challengers and Indus Invincibles. “CM Punjab Champions League will provide a suitable platform to talented female cricketers to demonstrate their cricketing potential”.
Director General Sports Punjab Muhammad Tariq Qureshi said the CM Punjab Champions League matches of women cricket teams will be organized at Nawab Town Cricket Stadium while men’s 12 teams will play their matches at the LCCA Ground, Ashiana Cricket Stadium, Garhi Shahu Railway Ground and Gaddafi Stadium from August 3 to 9.
Director General Sports Punjab Muhammad Tariq Qureshi said that the number of participating women’s teams would be enhanced in the next edition of the CM Punjab Champions League. “We are quite confident that the CM Punjab Champions League would help a lot in identifying highly talented young women cricketers.”

    QUETTA: The search and rescue operation at the site of the deadly coal mine explosion near Quetta concluded on Saturday after rescuers recovered the bodies of the last two trapped miners. With the latest recovery, the death toll from the tragedy has reached 34. The explosion took place on Thursday at a privately operated coal mine in the Sorange coalfield, located around 30 kilometres northeast of Quetta. Officials said a buildup of methane gas triggered a powerful explosion, causing a fire inside the mine and leading to its collapse. The blast also affected another nearby mine. Balochistan Chief Inspector of Mines Muhammad Atif confirmed that all 34 miners trapped underground had now been recovered. He said rescue teams worked continuously under difficult conditions to retrieve the remaining two bodies after recovering 32 victims on Friday. Following the completion of the rescue mission, authorities sealed both mines and launched a formal investigation into the incident. A team of mining experts has been formed to determine the exact cause of the explosion and examine whether all required safety measures had been followed. Officials said all the deceased miners belonged to Shangla district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Their bodies have been transported to their hometowns, where funeral prayers and burials will be held. Authorities said 23 of the victims were residents of Pirabad, a village that has repeatedly suffered losses in coal mining accidents. Local representatives said most of the miners were young men between the ages of 17 and 25. Community leaders said many of the victims belonged to the same families and were close relatives. Some of the deceased had already lost their fathers in previous mining accidents, reflecting the continued dangers faced by families dependent on coal mining for their livelihood. According to officials, 24 miners were working nearly 4,000 feet underground in the mine where the methane gas explosion occurred. The remaining workers were trapped in another nearby mine that was also affected by the blast. The tragedy has once again highlighted concerns over working conditions and safety standards in Pakistan’s coal mining sector. Labour organisations have repeatedly called for stronger enforcement of mining regulations, improved ventilation systems and better emergency preparedness to reduce the risk of fatal accidents. Coal mining remains one of the country’s most dangerous occupations. Workers face constant threats from gas explosions, mine collapses, toxic fumes, suffocation and long-term respiratory diseases caused by prolonged exposure to coal dust.

      KARACHI: Pakistan received $3.6 billion in workers’ remittances from overseas Pakistanis during July 2026, marking a significant increase compared with the same period last year, according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). The central bank reported that remittance inflows increased by 13% year-on-year in July and also recorded a 4.5% rise compared with the previous month. The latest figures highlight the continued importance of overseas Pakistanis in supporting the country’s foreign exchange position and overall economic stability. Saudi Arabia remained the largest source of remittances during the month, sending $913.9 million to Pakistan. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) followed with $737.3 million, while overseas Pakistanis in the United Kingdom contributed $555.5 million. The United States also remained an important source, accounting for $317.2 million in remittance inflows. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the increase and expressed satisfaction over the $3.6 billion received in July. In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, he said the 13% year-on-year increase in remittances was encouraging and reflected the continued contribution of overseas Pakistanis to the national economy. The prime minister also highlighted the 4.5% month-on-month growth, saying that the consistent financial support provided by overseas Pakistanis was playing an important role in strengthening Pakistan’s economy. He described overseas Pakistanis as a valuable and integral part of the country’s economic mainstream. The latest figures have also generated positive expectations regarding Pakistan’s remittance outlook for the ongoing financial year. Topline Research estimated that remittances could reach around $40.1 billion during FY27 if the current trend continues. Economist Dr Khaqan Najeeb said remittances were becoming increasingly important as a source of foreign exchange, particularly at a time when Pakistan’s export sector continued to face difficulties. According to him, the country’s weak domestic economic conditions, limited employment opportunities and significant differences between local and international wages were encouraging more Pakistanis to seek employment abroad. He noted that the movement of workers overseas was resulting in a corresponding flow of foreign exchange back into Pakistan. The economist said these inflows were helping the country manage its balance of payments and reduce pressure on its external accounts. However, he also warned that the growing dependence on remittances highlighted deeper structural weaknesses within the domestic economy. Dr Najeeb pointed out that Pakistan’s increasing reliance on overseas employment reflected the country’s inability to generate enough productive and well-paying jobs at home. While remittances provide valuable financial support and strengthen foreign exchange reserves, he argued that sustainable economic growth requires stronger domestic employment opportunities and a more competitive export sector. The July figures therefore present both an encouraging development and a broader economic challenge. Rising remittances are providing Pakistan with much-needed foreign exchange, but policymakers also face the task of improving domestic economic conditions so that overseas employment becomes a choice rather than a necessity for a growing number of Pakistanis.

    Rain likely in Karachi from today till August 3

    KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain accompanied by thunderstorms in Karachi from Saturday afternoon or evening until August 3 as a weather system continues to influence parts of Sindh. According to meteorologists, the intense low-pressure system that had developed over southern Madhya Pradesh has weakened further. It is now located near Rajasthan as a well-marked low-pressure area and is expected to weaken further over the next 24 hours. Despite weakening, the system continues to draw monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal into the upper and central parts of Pakistan. At the same time, a westerly weather system is also affecting the country’s northern regions, creating favourable conditions for rainfall in several areas. The Met Office said Karachi is likely to receive rain with thunderstorms from Saturday afternoon or evening through August 3 under the influence of the weather system. Weather experts also forecast intermittent rain accompanied by dust storms and thunderstorms in Tharparkar, Umerkot and Mithi until August 3. Similar weather conditions are expected in Sanghar, Hyderabad and surrounding districts during the same period. The PMD warned that heavy rainfall could lead to urban flooding in low-lying areas of Sukkur, Shaheed Benazirabad, Hyderabad, Badin, Sanghar, Khairpur, Matiari, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Tando Muhammad Khan and Tando Allahyar. The department also cautioned that heavy rain, strong winds and lightning could damage weak structures. Farmers have been advised to plan their agricultural activities according to the changing weather conditions to avoid potential losses. For Karachi, the Met Office said the sky is expected to remain mostly cloudy during the next 24 hours. The maximum temperature is likely to reach around 36 degrees Celsius. During the past 24 hours, the minimum temperature recorded in the city was 29.5 degrees Celsius.

    JHELUM: In a major security lapse, armed men intercepted a prison van on the busy GT Road near Mandra and forcibly freed a murder suspect who was being taken back to District Jail Jhelum after appearing in court. The escape involved Malik Hamad, who is facing a murder case registered with Saddar Beruni police. He had initially been held at Adiala Central Jail before being transferred to Jhelum following the recovery of a mobile phone and other prohibited items during a surprise inspection. Hamad was brought to Rawalpindi on Tuesday for a court hearing. While the prison van was returning to Jhelum, it slowed near Galaxy Hotel at Bacha Stop, where another vehicle approached the van. According to sources, the occupants told prison officials that Hamad’s mother was seriously ill and requested a brief meeting with him. Taking advantage of the confusion, several armed men surrounded the van with their vehicles, pulled Hamad out and escaped. The incident immediately triggered a security alert, with senior police and jail officials rushing to the location. Police teams were subsequently formed to track down and arrest the escaped suspect. The incident has raised fresh concerns about the security arrangements for transporting prisoners. It comes weeks after 14 high-risk prisoners escaped from another prison van while returning from Kahuta in late June. All of them were later recaptured following an extensive search operation, while cases were registered against the policemen responsible for their security. Following that escape, Rawalpindi police introduced new standard operating procedures aimed at strengthening prisoner transportation security. The latest incident, however, has renewed questions about whether those measures are being properly implemented. Four policemen reportedly assigned to guard Hamad have been detained for questioning. Sources also claimed that the suspect had links with an influential individual associated with a private housing society. Despite the seriousness of the incident, senior police officials declined to comment publicly, while a search operation to recapture Hamad remained underway.

He said the government’s approach made people feel as though they simply didn’t matter. Lecornu’s office responded by saying he had spoken with affected residents and farmers during the visit. Speaking separately with officials in nearby Merignac, the prime minister insisted there was nothing to hide regarding how fire protection efforts had been carried out in recent weeks. According to AFP, much of the anger stems from allegations that authorities prioritised protecting the affluent Cap-Ferret peninsula over ordinary local homes during the firefighting response. Lecornu firmly rejected those claims, denying any preferential treatment had taken place. The backlash adds to broader frustration across parts of Europe currently grappling with wildfire emergencies. Meanwhile, the European Commission has ramped up support elsewhere on the continent, deploying additional firefighting resources to both Belgium and Spain through its civil protection mechanism. Swedish aircraft and helicopters from several European countries have been sent to Belgium to assist with ongoing fire response efforts there. Separately, 104 French firefighters and 36 vehicles have joined operations in Spain to help combat blazes spreading through the region. With wildfires continuing to strain resources across multiple European countries, pressure on national governments to respond effectively is likely to remain high in the coming weeks. For Lecornu, Monday’s frosty reception in Gironde signals that public patience with the government’s crisis response is wearing thin.
