Police Clarify Charges and Deny Rumors

Police Captain Nipon Polsawat from the Bang Bua Thong Police Station confirmed that officers interrogated the suspect shortly after the incident. Authorities officially charged Yosthorn with drunk driving, reckless driving causing death, and causing damage to private property. Police are currently awaiting detailed forensic results before completing the final prosecution file for court proceedings.

Investigators also addressed widespread public confusion regarding potential charges against the deceased tuk-tuk driver. Police strongly denied rumors claiming that the victim shared negligence in the crash. Officials explained that an insurance representative made those initial statements, not law enforcement officers conducting the investigation.

Relatives of the victims gathered at Wat Bang Phai temple to hold funeral rites and pay their final respects. The suspect and his family members attended the cremation ceremony to offer formal apologies to the grieving relatives. While the suspect bowed down to ask for forgiveness, heartbroken family members stated that words cannot undo the overwhelming damage.

Victim families also turned down initial financial assistance offers from the suspect’s representatives during the early stage of the investigation. Relatives insisted that they want the judicial system to take its full course without pre-emptive monetary settlements. Insurance representatives will negotiate formal compensation packages with the victims’ families only after all religious funeral services conclude.

Court allows tax credit adjustment against super t…

The Federal Constitutional Court has issued an important ruling in favour of corporate taxpayers. The court has declared the adjustment of tax credits against super tax legally valid. It has also overturned an earlier decision of the Islamabad High Court. Justice Amir Farooq authored the six-page detailed judgment. The court accepted the appeals filed by a private mobile phone company. The case relates to the adjustment of tax credits against super tax. The company had challenged a demand raised by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). The FBR had issued a notice to the private company. The notice required the company to pay super tax. The company approached the Islamabad High Court after receiving the notice. It argued that its available tax credit should be allowed to adjust against the super tax liability. The Islamabad High Court rejected the company’s petition. The company then challenged that decision before the Federal Constitutional Court. The Federal Constitutional Court has now accepted the company’s appeals. It has declared that tax credits available to a taxpayer can be adjusted against super tax. The court referred to the relevant provisions of the tax law. It observed that the tax credit available under Section 168 is a separate and legally recognised right. According to the judgment, a taxpayer should not be prevented from using this credit for adjustment. The court said forcing a taxpayer to seek only a refund would not be consistent with the intention of the law. The judgment also addressed the interpretation of financial and tax laws. The court observed that such laws should be interpreted in a manner that facilitates taxpayers. The court emphasised that taxpayers should be able to exercise rights provided to them under the law. A legal right to a tax credit cannot be unnecessarily restricted through an interpretation that creates additional difficulties for taxpayers. The court also issued directions to the FBR. The FBR has been directed to examine the taxpayer’s claim for adjustment. The department must consider the claim in response to the tax notice. The FBR will now have to decide the matter according to the applicable law and the court’s ruling. The judgment provides an important clarification for corporate taxpayers. It establishes that an eligible tax credit can be considered for adjustment against a super tax liability. The ruling may also have wider implications for companies facing similar tax demands. Businesses with legally available tax credits may now rely on the court’s interpretation when seeking adjustments against their tax liabilities. By setting aside the Islamabad High Court’s decision, the Federal Constitutional Court has clarified the legal position on the issue. The case also highlights the continuing dispute between taxpayers and the FBR over the interpretation and application of tax laws.

CIA doubted Iran threat behind Trump plane switch

WASHINGTON: US intelligence officials had doubts about the credibility of an alleged Iranian threat against President Donald Trump that triggered an extraordinary security operation during his departure from Türkiye last month, according to a Washington Post report. The revelation adds a new twist to the dramatic episode in which Trump was secretly moved from an aircraft at Ankara airport and flown to Britain aboard a smaller military jet while another aircraft was used as a decoy. The Washington Post, citing current and former US officials familiar with the intelligence, reported that CIA analysts did not consider information provided by Israel sufficiently compelling. The analysts reportedly communicated their reservations to officials in the Trump administration. The intelligence was described by one US official as Israeli-derived rather than US-generated and assessed with “low confidence”, according to the report. The CIA has declined to comment publicly. Despite the doubts, the US Secret Service decided that the potential danger justified extraordinary precautions. Trump’s security team has faced several serious incidents during his presidency and officials have stressed that they were unwilling to take unnecessary risks. The unusual operation unfolded after Trump attended the NATO summit in Ankara on July 8. According to reports, the president was initially expected to leave Türkiye aboard Air Force One. Instead, he was covertly transferred to a C-32A military aircraft through an airport catering truck. Trump and a small group of close aides then travelled to Britain’s Mildenhall air base, with fighter jets providing protection. Meanwhile, the regular presidential aircraft continued as part of a carefully planned deception. The operation has attracted considerable attention because it involved not only a change of aircraft but also secrecy from journalists and some senior officials travelling with the presidential delegation. The Washington Post reported that close Trump aides Dan Scavino, Natalie Harp and Walt Nauta accompanied him during the covert transfer, while no Cabinet officials did. The White House has defended the decision, saying Trump faces numerous threats, including threats linked to Iran, and that the Secret Service’s primary responsibility is protecting the president. Trump himself said the decision to use another plane was made by the Secret Service and that he followed its instructions. Reuters also reported that US officials considered the threat serious enough to warrant the covert aircraft switch. The intelligence dispute has nevertheless raised broader questions about the information shared between Israel and Washington. Some current and former US intelligence officials reportedly believe Israeli reporting can sometimes be intended not only to warn American leaders but also to influence policy decisions. The episode comes amid heightened tensions between Washington, Israel and Iran, making intelligence assessments particularly sensitive. It also highlights the difficult balance between acting quickly on potential threats and determining how reliable those threats actually are. For the Trump administration, the incident has now become more than a story about an unusual plane switch. It has raised questions about intelligence credibility, presidential security and the influence of foreign-provided information on US decision-making.

In his message marking Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day, Schultze said the occasion was a time to celebrate the country’s creation while recognising the resilience, diversity and ambitions of its people. He noted that Pakistan and Germany will complete 75 years of diplomatic relations on October 15. Govt raises fuel prices as petrol pump strike thre…

The federal government has increased the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel, while petrol pump owners have announced a nationwide strike after failing to reach an agreement with the government over the newly introduced daily fuel pricing system. Under the latest notification, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has increased by Rs7.15 per litre, rising from Rs360.06 to Rs367.21. The price of petrol has also been increased by Rs4.93 per litre, taking it from Rs315.80 to Rs320.73. The revised prices came into effect on July 22. The increase follows the government’s decision to replace the previous fortnightly fuel price adjustment system with a daily pricing mechanism. Under the new policy, petroleum prices can now change every day depending on international oil prices and fluctuations in the exchange rate. The new pricing mechanism has been strongly opposed by petrol pump owners and fuel dealers. They argue that daily price revisions are difficult to implement and create financial uncertainty for retailers across the country. After negotiations with government officials failed, the All Pakistan Petrol Pumps Owners Association (APPPOA) announced an indefinite nationwide strike beginning at midnight on Wednesday. The association said petrol pumps across Pakistan would remain closed until the government accepts its demands. Association leaders said discussions with the Petroleum Ministry failed to resolve major issues, including dealer profit margins and the implementation of daily fuel pricing. They insisted that the current system is not practical for petrol station operators and would create serious operational challenges. The Petroleum Retailers Association has also expressed support for the strike, raising concerns about possible disruptions in fuel supplies if the dispute continues. Meanwhile, the All Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) is expected to decide whether it will formally join the protest. The association has called a meeting of its executive committee to discuss the situation and determine its future course of action. PPDA officials said they had already shared their concerns with the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA). According to the association, the regulator requested additional time to present the dealers’ concerns to the government before any final decision is made. Fuel dealers believe daily price changes make it difficult to manage inventories, update fuel prices, and maintain smooth business operations. They argue that the previous fortnightly pricing system provided greater stability and reduced uncertainty for both retailers and consumers. The government, however, maintains that the daily pricing mechanism will ensure that domestic fuel prices more closely reflect changes in global oil markets. Officials believe the new system will improve transparency and allow quicker adjustments to international price movements.
