EU calls emergency meeting following mass migrant crossings into Ceuta

The European Union has convened an emergency meeting after 22 member states issued a joint letter demanding coordinated action to strengthen the bloc’s external borders following the arrival of 60,000 migrants in Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta.

The influx has triggered severe political friction within the EU, leading Italy, Finland, and Denmark to suspend or question passport-free Schengen travel arrangements with Spain. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez condemned the unilateral measures as unlawful and selfish, maintaining that border control was fully restored within 48 hours and preventing onward movement into continental Europe.

EU officials confirmed the death toll from the crossing attempt has risen to at least 67 while the vast majority of individuals who entered the enclave have since returned to Morocco.

The joint letter addressed to EU leadership stresses that uncoordinated responses risk creating a perception that illegal entry into the bloc is possible, which would encourage further crossing attempts across member states.

In response to the crisis, Spanish authorities have installed floating security barriers off the Ceuta coastline while working alongside international partners to secure the border perimeter.

Dylan Mulvaney responds after Trump remarks

Transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney has responded after US President Donald Trump mentioned her several times during his speech at the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner, saying she was surprised to remain a topic of conversation years after her controversial Bud Light partnership. Mulvaney addressed the remarks in a TikTok video, where she congratulated CNN correspondent Kaitlan Collins before responding to Trump’s comments. The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, originally scheduled for April, was postponed after a gunman opened fire while the event was underway. During his speech on Friday, Trump congratulated CNN White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins on receiving a journalism award before joking about her success and comparing her to Mulvaney. Trump said, “I thought Kaitlan had really made it big with a major new sponsorship, but then I informed her that it wasn’t her on the Bud Light can, it was Dylan Mulvaney.” He went on to criticise Mulvaney’s 2023 promotional campaign with Bud Light, adding, “Dylan Mulvaney cost Bud Light $35 billion in market cap. That was the worst commercial ever made by the way, for those few people who want to hear that. Most people don’t care, but I would. I wouldn’t want to hire Dylan any time soon.” According to the report, Trump later shared an edited image on social media that placed Kaitlan Collins’ face onto Mulvaney’s body from the Bud Light advertisement, further extending the joke beyond the dinner. The post quickly circulated online and generated widespread discussion on social media. In a TikTok response posted on Sunday, Mulvaney began by congratulating Collins on her award. She said, “I would like to tell her that I’m incredibly honored to be compared to her in any way, and I hope that she keeps doing all the great work.” She then pointed out that Trump had mentioned her repeatedly during his speech, saying, “And yet I am still his topic of conversation all these years later.” Reflecting on the continued attention she receives, Mulvaney added, “It seems to me that I might be like the one that got away for these men.” She also made it clear that she would not want support from an administration whose policies she believes do not support her or many others, stating, “I wouldn’t want to be professionally supported by an administration that doesn’t personally support me or so many others in this country.” Mulvaney concluded her video with a pointed remark about the criticism she has received from the administration. “Maybe being publicly mocked and criticized by this administration is actually like the greatest compliment of all,” she said. Her response has since gone viral, drawing mixed reactions online, with supporters praising her composure while critics continued debating the controversy surrounding her Bud Light partnership and Trump’s remarks.

US official insists Gaza peace plan remains active despite Netanyahu’s rejection

A Board of Peace official confirmed on Monday that US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace framework remains operative, despite public pushback from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu rejected any withdrawal of Israeli forces until the Palestinian militant group Hamas is genuinely disarmed. His remarks came as the Israeli military  halted offensive operations in Gaza following pressure from Washington. The Board of Peace official emphasized that the initiative relies on phased implementation and verification on the ground, ensuring Israel makes no irreversible security concessions prior to confirmed compliance. Under the plan announced last month, Israeli forces would withdraw as Hamas disarms, paving the way for an International Stabilisation Force to partner with a newly formed Palestinian police unit. Negotiation roadmaps are being coordinated between the Board of Peace and Hamas while bilateral discussions with Israeli leadership continue.

Gen Z-led protest movement poses major challenge to Modi government in India

India is witnessing a significant wave of youth-led protests that has intensified political pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government during its third consecutive term. The growing movement, driven largely by Generation Z, has emerged as one of the most prominent public challenges to the current administration, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction over unemployment, alleged examination scandals, and concerns about the country’s education system. The protest movement has gained momentum through a platform known as the “Cockroach Janata Party,” which has become a symbolic outlet for the frustration of young Indians. Although the name began as a satirical expression on social media, it has rapidly evolved into a broader movement that has attracted thousands of participants across different regions. The campaign highlights the growing anger among students and young professionals who believe that the government has failed to address issues affecting their future. The movement received further attention following the hunger strike and reported forced removal of activist Sonam Wangchuk, developments that protesters say strengthened public support for the demonstrations. Many participants argue that such actions have reinforced concerns about the government’s response to peaceful dissent and have encouraged more young people to join the protests. According to a reports , the demonstrations are being viewed as the biggest wave of public pressure faced by Prime Minister Modi since the beginning of his third term in office. The protests are rooted in several long-standing grievances, including examination irregularities, rising unemployment among educated youth, and declining confidence in India’s education system. Protesters believe that these issues have seriously affected career opportunities and undermined trust in public institutions Tensions escalated during a protest march toward the Indian Parliament, where clashes broke out between demonstrators and security personnel. Authorities attempted to stop protesters from reaching the Parliament complex, leading to confrontations that further heightened the political atmosphere Official figures released after the clashes stated that at least 180 people were injured, including 118 police officers and 60 protesters. The remaining injured individuals were not immediately identified. In response to the unrest, authorities temporarily suspended mobile internet services in several sensitive areas of the city, citing security concerns. Such restrictions have drawn criticism from rights groups and civil society organizations, which argue that internet shutdowns limit communication and restrict access to information during times of public unrest. One of the protesters’ primary demands is the resignation of the country’s Education Minister. Demonstrators argue that accountability is necessary in light of the alleged examination controversies and the broader crisis facing the education sector. The movement continues to be led primarily by young people, and many observers describe it as the collective voice of Generation Z demanding greater transparency, fairness, and employment opportunities. According to Deutsche Welle (DW), the campaign initially began as a satirical online movement but quickly transformed into an organized nationwide protest. What started as digital criticism on social media has evolved into large-scale street demonstrations that reflect deep frustration among young Indians over limited job prospects, educational challenges, and uncertainty about their future. As the movement continues to expand, political analysts believe it represents a critical test for the Modi government. Whether the administration chooses dialogue, policy reforms, or stronger security measures in response to the protests could significantly influence public opinion and shape India’s political landscape in the months ahead.
