Mohammad Amir blames workload for Shaheen Afridi’s struggles

Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir believes Shaheen Shah Afridi’s recent decline in form is largely the result of poor workload management, arguing that the left-arm pacer was overburdened during the early years of his international career. Amir made the remarks after Shaheen was left out of Pakistan’s Test squad for the ongoing series against the West Indies, a decision that has sparked fresh debate over the fast bowler’s form, fitness, and future in the longest format of the game. Shaheen was once considered Pakistan’s premier fast bowler across all three formats, but his performances in Test cricket have dipped since returning from a serious knee injury in 2023. Although he remains a key figure in Pakistan’s white-ball plans, his red-ball performances have raised concerns among former players and cricket experts. Since making his comeback, Shaheen has taken 27 wickets in 16 Test innings at an average of 40.11, with a strike rate of 67.6. His performances during Pakistan’s 2-0 home Test series defeat to Bangladesh also came under criticism, particularly because of a noticeable drop in bowling speed. The left-arm pacer, who previously relied on consistently high pace, was often clocked in the mid-120 km/h range during the series. Speaking on The Scoop by Wisden, Amir said he had predicted such challenges years ago, warning that excessive cricket without proper workload management could eventually take a toll on Shaheen’s body and performance. According to Amir, fast bowlers require careful planning throughout their careers, especially when they are expected to play regularly across all formats. He said failing to manage a pacer’s workload can affect pace, rhythm, consistency, and overall fitness over time. Amir recalled giving an interview in either 2020 or 2021 in which he expressed concern about the amount of cricket Shaheen was playing. Drawing from his own experience as a fast bowler, Amir said he warned that continuous cricket without adequate rest would eventually lead to physical and performance-related struggles. He added that the warning appears to have become reality, as Shaheen is now facing issues with pace, consistency, and fitness despite still being relatively young. Amir stressed that a player of Shaheen’s age should ideally be at the peak of his career, but the current situation suggests that something has gone wrong in his development. He maintained that poor workload management remains the biggest factor behind the left-arm pacer’s struggles. The statistics support Amir’s concerns about Shaheen’s workload before his injury. Between making his international debut and suffering a knee injury in July 2022, Shaheen bowled 809.4 overs in Test cricket, more than any other Pakistan bowler during that period. Former leg-spinner Yasir Shah ranked second with 606.2 overs, while Hasan Ali was the next-highest fast bowler with 427.3 overs. The figures highlight the significant responsibility placed on Shaheen as the leader of Pakistan’s pace attack, with many now questioning whether better workload management could have helped preserve his fitness and long-term effectiveness.

Peshawar High Court orders decision on Afghan busi…

The Peshawar High Court has issued a written judgment regarding a petition filed against the non-extension of visas for an Afghan businessman and his family members. The court has directed the relevant authorities to decide the applicant’s visa extension case within 15 days in accordance with the law. According to the written decision issued by the High Court, the petitioner is a registered taxpayer with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). The applicant possesses a National Tax Number (NTN) and is also a member of the Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The court observed that the applicant has established business ties and fulfills the necessary legal requirements as a registered member of the business community. The judgment stated that the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports, Islamabad, failed to make a timely decision on the visa extension applications submitted by the petitioner. Due to the delay in processing the applications, the applicant and his family have faced difficulties and uncertainty regarding their legal status in Pakistan. The court emphasized that government authorities are required to make decisions within a reasonable period and in accordance with the provisions of the law. The judgment noted that the applicants had submitted proper applications for visa extensions after the expiry of their previous visa periods. Therefore, their pending applications should have been considered and decided promptly by the relevant department. The Peshawar High Court further directed the concerned authorities to review the pending visa extension requests and issue a detailed decision within 15 days. The court made it clear that the decision must be based on legal principles and should address all relevant aspects of the applicants’ cases. The court’s order highlights the importance of timely administrative decisions, particularly in matters involving foreign nationals who are legally residing and conducting business activities in Pakistan. Delays in such cases can create serious challenges for individuals, including difficulties related to travel, business operations, documentation, and compliance with immigration requirements. The judgment also reflects the court’s view that individuals who meet legal obligations, such as tax registration and business registration, deserve a fair and timely review of their applications. The authorities have been instructed to avoid unnecessary delays and ensure that administrative procedures are completed within the timeframe prescribed by law. The case was brought before the High Court after the applicant’s visa extension requests remained unresolved despite the submission of formal applications. The petitioner argued that the delay by immigration authorities had caused hardship for him and his family. After examining the facts of the case, the court issued directions to ensure that the pending matters are resolved without further delay. The written decision of the Peshawar High Court serves as a reminder that government departments must act efficiently and transparently when dealing with legal applications. The court’s order does not grant an automatic visa extension but requires the authorities to make a proper and lawful decision on the pending applications within the specified 15-day period.

Jeff Hiller earns Emmy nod and unexpected ChatGPT comparisons

Actor Jeff Hiller has earned his second career Emmy nomination for a performance that lasted just seven minutes, but it is the unexpected comparison to ChatGPT that has amused him the most. Hiller received a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his appearance as Larry in Apple TV+’s science-fiction drama Pluribus. The actor recently addressed the reaction during an appearance on The Daily Show, where he admitted he never expected viewers to compare his character to artificial intelligence. “I’ve heard this. A lot of people have said, ‘You’re just like ChatGPT,’” Hiller said while discussing audience reactions to his role. Reflecting on his performance, he joked that his original intention had been very different from how viewers interpreted it. “I was trying to convey extreme love for her. And instead, I did ChatGPT. Anyway, I got an Emmy nomination for it. Sometimes you aim for one target, you hit another,” he said. In Pluribus, created by Vince Gilligan, Hiller portrays Larry, a cheerful biker who shares a memorable conversation with Carol, played by Rhea Seehorn, in the fourth episode of the series. The show is set in a world where a mysterious virus has transformed most of humanity into a blissfully content hive mind. Carol is among the few people who remain unaffected, and her interaction with Larry becomes one of the episode’s defining moments. The scene, in which Carol questions Larry about the intentions of the hive mind, ultimately earned Hiller widespread praise and an Emmy nomination despite his limited screen time. Speaking about his chances of winning at this year’s ceremony, Hiller remained characteristically humorous. “I’m not gonna win,” he joked before revealing the acceptance speech he believes would fit the unusual journey of his performance. “Suck it!” he quipped, laughing at the idea that his role had resonated with audiences in such an unexpected way. The nomination marks another milestone in Hiller’s career. It is his second Emmy nomination in two years, following his success for portraying Joel in the final season of HBO’s critically acclaimed comedy Somebody Somewhere. Since then, Hiller has continued to build an impressive television résumé with guest appearances in series including Elsbeth, Ghosts and Widow’s Bay, further establishing himself as one of television’s most dependable character actors. His latest recognition also highlights the impact a brief but memorable performance can have, with just seven minutes on screen proving enough to leave a lasting impression on both viewers and Emmy voters. The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards nominees were announced earlier this month, with Hiller among the contenders in the guest actor drama category. The ceremony will honour the year’s best performances across television. While Hiller insists he is not expecting to take home another Emmy trophy, his humorous response to being compared with ChatGPT has become one of the lighter moments of this year’s awards season, showing that even an unconventional audience reaction can become part of an actor’s success story.

Seales rocks Pakistan as West Indies tighten grip on first test

TAROUBA: Pakistan’s batting line-up came under early pressure as the visitors slipped to 25-3 while chasing a target of 211 against the West Indies on the fourth day of the opening Test at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy on Tuesday. West Indies fast bowler Jayden Seales made an immediate impact with the new ball, removing Pakistan’s top order during an impressive opening spell. His early breakthroughs left the tourists struggling before lunch and handed the hosts complete control of the contest. Pakistan’s chase began on a disappointing note when opener Imam-ul-Haq was dismissed for just five runs. Azan Awais also failed to settle at the crease, contributing only three runs before returning to the pavilion. With both openers dismissed inside the first five overs, Pakistan found themselves under significant pressure at 21-2. Seales continued his destructive spell by trapping Salman Ali Agha leg before wicket without allowing him to score. The dismissal reduced Pakistan to 25-3, placing the visitors in a difficult position with a challenging target still well out of reach. Experienced batter Babar Azam then joined wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan in an attempt to stabilize the innings. The pair negotiated the remaining overs of the morning session without losing another wicket, providing Pakistan with some much-needed resistance after the early collapse. Earlier in the day, Pakistan’s bowlers wrapped up the West Indies’ second innings for 181, setting a victory target of 211. Veteran fast bowler Mohammad Abbas starred with the ball, producing another outstanding spell to claim his seventh five-wicket haul in Test cricket. The West Indies resumed play at 126-7, hoping their lower order could stretch the lead and make Pakistan’s chase more difficult. Shamar Joseph and Kemar Roach responded with an aggressive counterattack, frustrating the Pakistani bowlers with a valuable lower-order partnership. The pair added 28 runs during the morning session to extend their stand to 61 runs. Their attacking approach pushed the West Indies’ overall lead beyond 180 runs, strengthening the hosts’ position in the match. Shamar Joseph played an entertaining innings, scoring 38 runs from just 27 deliveries. His knock featured four towering sixes and one boundary, allowing the West Indies to score valuable quick runs before Pakistan finally broke the partnership. Mohammad Ali provided the breakthrough by deceiving Joseph with a slower delivery, bringing an end to the dangerous stand. Despite the dismissal, the West Indies tail continued to add useful runs as Kemar Roach and Jomel Warrican frustrated Pakistan with another steady partnership. Roach contributed 18 runs before becoming Mohammad Abbas’ fourth victim of the innings. Warrican also added an important 14 runs, helping the West Indies move their lead closer to the 200-run mark. Abbas then completed the innings by dismissing Warrican, finishing with exceptional figures of 5 wickets for 22 runs in 15.5 overs. His disciplined pace bowling proved crucial in preventing the West Indies from posting an even bigger target. Mohammad Ali and Khurram Shahzad also played important supporting roles with the ball. Ali picked up two wickets in his 14-over spell, while Khurram Shahzad claimed two scalps after bowling 15 overs. Although Pakistan succeeded in restricting the West Indies to 181 in the second innings, the visitors’ difficult start with the bat shifted the momentum back in favour of the home side. With Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan at the crease, Pakistan will rely heavily on their experienced pair to steer the chase and keep hopes of victory alive as the first Test heads toward an exciting finish.

Sindh forms third medical board for exhumation of …

The Sindh government has constituted a third medical board to carry out the exhumation and medico-legal examination of 25-year-old businessman Mir Ali Raza’s body, following controversy over the findings of his initial post-mortem report. The new eight-member medical board was notified by the Sindh Health Department on Friday after two earlier notifications were withdrawn. The exhumation, which was initially scheduled for Friday, was postponed after the deceased’s family raised objections over the sudden changes in the medical board. According to the latest notification, Police Surgeon Dr Sumaiyya Syed has been appointed as the convener of the board, while Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) Pathology Department Head Professor Dr Naseem Ahmed will serve as the pathologist. Other members of the board include forensic expert Dr Farah Waseem from Jinnah Sindh Medical University, forensic identification expert Amir Hassan Khan, Additional Police Surgeon Dr Srichand, and medico-legal officers from Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), including Dr Kamran Khan and Dr Daniyal Mirza. The board has also been authorized to include additional experts if required. The exhumation has been scheduled for Saturday, August 8, at 11am, according to the Office of the Police Surgeon. A civil judge and judicial magistrate Karachi-XXI will also be present during the procedure. The decision to exhume Mir Ali Raza’s body came after his father approached the court seeking further investigation. A Karachi court allowed the exhumation and directed authorities to form a medico-legal board to examine the circumstances surrounding his death. The case gained attention after concerns were raised regarding possible inconsistencies in the original autopsy report. Karachi Police Surgeon Dr Sumaiyya Syed had pointed out that certain observations in the post-mortem report appeared inconsistent with available photographs, including questions regarding the bullet entry and exit wounds. She stated that the reported bullet trajectory and wounds required further examination and noted that gunshot residue testing, which can be relevant in suspected suicide cases, had not been conducted. Police officials responded by saying that such comments could affect the ongoing investigation but acknowledged that exhumation could provide further clarification through a committee of medical experts with court approval. Mir Ali Raza, the owner of food outlet Wafflix, went missing on July 28. His body was discovered the following day near Shahi Qila Ground in Gulistan-e-Jauhar with a gunshot wound. Initially, a kidnapping case was registered at Ferozabad Police Station on his father’s complaint. Police said their investigation indicated that Ali had been facing financial difficulties and had contacted friends for financial assistance before his death. Investigators said he left his home in PECHS Block-2 and traveled by a ride-hailing taxi, which dropped him near the location where his body was later found. The latest medical board is expected to examine the remains and provide further forensic findings that may help clarify the circumstances surrounding Mir Ali Raza’s death.
