Flood disaster in Afghanistan leaves dozens missing as rescue efforts continue

Rescue teams and local residents are continuing a desperate search for around 100 people missing after a powerful flash flood swept through eastern Afghanistan, killing at least 23 people and leaving widespread destruction across Nuristan province.

The flood struck the remote provincial capital of Parun on Monday, sending huge volumes of water, mud and massive rocks crashing through homes, shops and public buildings. Authorities said the number of missing remains high as emergency workers struggle to reach areas buried under debris.

Residents have joined the search using wooden poles, shovels and even their bare hands as heavy machinery has proven largely ineffective in the rugged mountainous terrain. A bulldozer was deployed to remove some rubble, but rescue operations remain slow because of the enormous boulders and thick layers of mud covering parts of the town.

Many survivors described the disaster as unlike anything they had ever experienced. Farid Gul Zaheer, a local pharmacist, said the flood arrived with incredible force and compared the terrifying moment to an earthquake. He said people were screaming as they rushed to escape and he was injured while climbing higher ground to save himself.

The flood has caused extensive damage across Parun, destroying markets, hotels and dozens of businesses. Local officials confirmed that the city’s mayor and several government employees are among those still missing, raising fears that the death toll could increase as rescue operations continue.

Hotel manager Zakirullah Zaki said almost every business in the area had been wiped out by the flood. Although his hotel remained standing, it was surrounded by destruction. He said his younger brother, who had been missing after the disaster, was later found.

The Afghan Red Crescent Society has deployed volunteers to help search for survivors and provide emergency assistance to affected families. Relief teams are distributing food, clean drinking water and tents to people who have lost their homes while continuing efforts to locate those trapped beneath the debris.

Afghanistan’s Defence Ministry has also sent military personnel to support rescue operations in the disaster zone. The United Nations has begun assessing the scale of the damage and humanitarian needs in the affected region.

Survivors say the emotional impact of the disaster has been devastating. Zaheer said he had lost everything and described the community as deeply traumatised after spending a sleepless night fearing further danger.

The severe weather has also affected neighbouring Pakistan, where heavy rainfall and flooding have claimed additional lives in recent days. The back to back disasters have once again highlighted the growing threat of extreme weather across the region.

Afghanistan remains one of the countries most vulnerable to climate related disasters. Flooding has become more frequent in recent years, worsening an already severe humanitarian crisis. Earlier this year, heavy rains and floods across Afghanistan and Pakistan killed more than 200 people, causing widespread damage to homes, farmland and infrastructure.

Environmental experts have repeatedly warned that climate change is increasing the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events in Afghanistan, placing millions of people at greater risk as communities continue to struggle with poverty, displacement and limited disaster response resources.

Iran appoints former IRGC commander Mohsen Rezaei as national security chief

Iran has appointed former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Mohsen Rezaei as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), placing a prominent hardliner at the center of the country’s defense and foreign policy establishment. Rezaei replaces Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr, who held the post briefly following the death of previous secretary Ali Larijani during an air strike in the ongoing conflict with the US and Israel. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei issued a decree appointing Rezaei as his direct representative on the council alongside Saeed Jalili, citing Rezaei’s extensive military experience during the Iran-Iraq War. The leadership shuffle comes as Iran negotiates conditional proposals to reopen shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing military and diplomatic friction. Rezaei, 71, commanded the IRGC from 1981 to 1997 and later served as secretary of the Expediency Discernment Council and vice president for economic affairs under President Ebrahim Raisi. Zolqadr, whom officials shifted to a political advisory role under the Supreme Leader, had previously outlined strict preconditions for diplomatic progress, including an immediate end to US military threats and an easing of economic sanctions.

Saudi Defense Minister holds urgent talks with Trump

Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman held an urgent meeting with US President Donald Trump as Riyadh sought to convey a special message from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the American leadership, according to US media reports. The meeting came amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, with Saudi Arabia reportedly pushing for de-escalation while also stressing its readiness to defend its territory and interests. Earlier, during a meeting with US Vice President JD Vance, Prince Khalid said Saudi Arabia wanted to reduce tensions with Iran. He reportedly argued that Iran-backed Iraqi militias had crossed a red line by attacking critical infrastructure and energy facilities, leaving Riyadh with no choice but to respond. However, the Saudi defense minister stressed that the military action in Iraq did not reflect a desire to escalate the regional conflict. He said the operation aimed to demonstrate that Saudi Arabia remains prepared to defend itself when necessary. Prince Khalid also reportedly told Vance that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was pushing for greater confrontation with Iran, while Saudi Arabia preferred a path of de-escalation, which it considers more beneficial for regional stability and its own interests. According to US media reports citing sources familiar with the discussions, Saudi Arabia also intended its strikes in Iraq to send a message to Yemen’s Houthi movement. Prince Khalid reportedly told the US vice president that Saudi Arabia has the capability to deal with the Houthis on its own and does not currently need direct US intervention on the issue. The Saudi defense minister also said Riyadh continues to engage in talks with the Houthis, indicating that Saudi Arabia remains open to diplomatic efforts alongside its military preparedness. The meetings highlight Riyadh’s attempt to balance military deterrence with diplomatic engagement as tensions involving Iran, Israel, Iraqi militias and the Houthis continue to shape the security situation across the region.

Kevin Feige reveals story behind Spider-Man’s iconic handshake

Kevin Feige has revealed the surprising story behind one of the most memorable friendship moments in the recent Spider-Man movies: the elaborate handshake shared by Peter Parker and his best friend Ned Leeds. Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, recently appeared at the D23 event alongside actor Jacob Batalon, who portrays Ned in the Spider-Man franchise. During the discussion, the two revisited some of the memorable moments from the movies, including the now-famous handshake between Ned and Peter. According to Feige, the handshake was not originally part of the script or something specifically planned by Marvel. Instead, it was an idea developed by Batalon and Tom Holland while they were working together on Spider-Man: Homecoming. Feige recalled that during the production of the 2016 movie, Holland and Batalon were spending time away from the main set when they came up with the idea. The Marvel executive said he noticed the two young actors approaching director Jon Watts to pitch their idea for a special handshake that could be used between their characters. The actors reportedly wanted their characters to have a unique gesture that reflected the close friendship between Peter and Ned. Watts agreed to let them try the idea, and the handshake eventually became part of the movie. What started as a simple idea between two young actors went on to become one of the most recognizable friendship moments in the Spider-Man franchise. The gesture helped strengthen the bond between Peter and Ned on screen while also giving their friendship a playful and distinctive identity. Feige credited both Holland and Batalon for creating the moment and thanked Batalon for helping bring the idea to life. His comments highlighted how some of the most memorable moments in major superhero franchises can emerge naturally from the chemistry between actors rather than being carefully planned from the beginning. Batalon has played Ned alongside Holland’s Peter Parker throughout the recent Spider-Man films, becoming an important part of the character’s journey. Their friendship has provided several lighter moments within the superhero stories, with Ned often serving as Peter’s trusted friend and supporter. The revelation also offers fans a behind-the-scenes look at how Spider-Man: Homecoming developed some of its most memorable details. While the films feature elaborate action sequences and carefully constructed storylines, small creative decisions from the cast can sometimes become just as memorable. The Spider-Man franchise continues to remain one of Marvel’s most successful properties, with fans eagerly following updates about its next chapter. The upcoming projects are expected to further expand Peter Parker’s story and introduce audiences to new developments in his superhero journey. For fans who have followed Peter and Ned since their first appearance together, the story behind the handshake adds another layer to one of the franchise’s most beloved friendship moments. What began as a spontaneous idea between Holland and Batalon ultimately became an enduring part of the Spider-Man movies.

MQM-P pushes for grand national dialogue on new pr…

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has announced plans to approach political parties across the country to launch a “grand national dialogue” on the creation of new provinces and administrative units. Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, MQM-P Chairman Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said Pakistan needed a serious national discussion on restructuring its administrative system, arguing that the country’s growing population had increased the need for additional provinces. Siddiqui said MQM-P had been advocating the creation of more provinces for decades, maintaining that Pakistan’s existing provincial structure was largely shaped by linguistic considerations rather than purely administrative requirements. He stressed that the party’s demand was not limited to Sindh and that it would support calls for new provinces wherever there was public and political backing. The MQM-P leader urged political parties to sit together and discuss their proposals and reservations instead of treating the issue as a source of political confrontation. He said his party was prepared to take the lead in initiating such a dialogue. Siddiqui also linked the debate over new provinces with the need to strengthen local governments. Referring to Article 140-A of the Constitution, he said provinces were constitutionally required to devolve political, administrative and financial powers to elected local representatives. He criticised the failure to fully implement the provision and recalled that MQM-P had previously approached the Supreme Court over the issue. He argued that creating additional provinces was not unconstitutional and said Parliament could debate the appropriate mechanism for establishing them. He also questioned whether existing provinces should have the sole authority to decide on their own division. MQM-P leader and Health Minister Mustafa Kamal said the party’s proposal was aimed at administrative restructuring rather than dividing communities or territories. He argued that people should have greater control over local leadership and governance, particularly when their cities face serious problems in living standards and public services. The MQM-P campaign follows recent remarks by Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi, who called for political parties to address major national issues, including the creation of new provinces. His proposal has since generated debate among government figures, lawyers and political circles, giving fresh momentum to the long-running discussion over Pakistan’s provincial structure. The MQM-P leadership said it would also engage legal experts and explore further legal avenues regarding the implementation of constitutional provisions related to local governance.
