Israel raises concerns over Trump’s Gaza plan

Israel has raised concerns with the United States over a Gaza peace plan praised by President Donald Trump after Hamas reportedly agreed to discuss disarmament.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Israel had shared its objections with US officials and stressed that the publicly released version of the proposal did not reflect its position.

Israeli officials also accused Hamas of rebuilding its military capabilities and recruiting fighters since a ceasefire announced by Trump in October. Israel has continued carrying out strikes in Gaza despite the truce, while the conflict has seen a reduction in overall violence.

Trump described Hamas’s reported agreement as a “major milestone” in efforts to end the war and claimed that Israel welcomed the development.

However, Netanyahu’s office said Hamas’s alleged military preparations showed that the group could still pose a serious threat to Israel. It argued that any long-term agreement must include the complete, verifiable and irreversible disarmament of Hamas.

An Israeli official said Israel would not withdraw its forces from Gaza under the proposed framework until it could confirm that Hamas had fully surrendered its weapons.

Meanwhile, Israeli strikes continued after the Hamas announcement. Palestinian authorities said Israeli attacks on Sunday killed at least 13 people.

According to Palestinian authorities, more than 73,000 Palestinians have died in Israel’s military campaign in Gaza since October 7, 2023.

    Pakistan and the United States have renewed their cooperation in higher education through a new five-year agreement between the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP). The agreement will run from the 2026-27 financial year through 2031-32. It will continue several major academic exchange and scholarship programmes for Pakistani students, researchers and professionals. The renewed partnership covers the Fulbright Master’s and PhD programmes. It also includes the Visiting Scholar Programme for post-doctoral researchers, the Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Programme and the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Programme. Under the new arrangement, the partners aim to support 66 Pakistani PhD scholars over the five-year period. Additional opportunities will be available through the other programmes covered by the agreement. The initiative is designed to help Pakistani students and academics access advanced education and research opportunities in the United States. Scholars are expected to bring back their expertise and contribute to the country’s academic and socio-economic development. The HEC will provide at least $4.54 million each year under the agreement. Its overall financial commitment for the five-year period has been capped at Rs6.48 billion. The funding will be released according to an agreed schedule. The arrangement includes an initial payment of $2 million by June 30, followed by another $2 million by January 31. The remaining amount will be released by April 30, subject to the availability of government funds. Any interest generated from HEC funds held by USEFP will be used again for student grants. This will provide additional support to beneficiaries of the programme. The selection of candidates will remain strictly merit-based. There will be no fixed quotas based on region, group or category. HEC representatives will also participate in selection panels. The commission will help identify areas of study that are considered important for Pakistan’s development and national priorities. The two institutions will establish a Joint Review Committee to monitor the programme. The committee will meet twice a year to assess progress, performance and the overall impact of the initiative. Financial oversight has also been included in the agreement. USEFP will provide annual audited financial statements to HEC. Relevant financial records will also remain available for review by the commission when required. The partnership will also focus on increasing awareness about international education opportunities. HEC and USEFP plan to conduct joint outreach activities across Pakistan. The initiative will use HEC’s network of universities and higher education institutions to reach a wider pool of potential applicants. The agreement also leaves room for future cooperation in areas such as faculty exchanges, administrator exchanges and other academic initiatives. The renewed arrangement builds on the earlier Fulbright-HEC PhD partnership signed in February 2016. Under that agreement, $25.786 million was committed to support 125 Pakistani scholars between 2016 and 2020.

    NEW DELHI: A major search-and-rescue operation was underway off eastern India on Sunday after a Panama-flagged bulk carrier sank in the Bay of Bengal, leaving 22 of its 24 crew members unaccounted for. The vessel, Ocean Winner, was carrying 24 crew members, including 20 Chinese nationals, three Myanmar nationals and one Bangladeshi, when communication with the ship was lost, according to the Indian Coast Guard. Two people have so far been rescued from life rafts. The vessel was transporting iron ore to Singapore after leaving India’s eastern Paradip port on Thursday. It sank about 240 nautical miles from the port, far from the Odisha coastline, prompting Indian authorities to mobilise ships for the rescue mission. The Coast Guard dispatched vessels from Sri Vijaya Puram, formerly known as Port Blair, to search the waters and locate other survivors. Nearby commercial vessels were also alerted and asked to assist in the operation as authorities raced against time to find the missing seafarers. The sinking has raised concerns for the safety of the remaining crew, particularly because the incident occurred in open waters. The cause of the vessel’s sinking was not immediately known, and officials had not provided an explanation for why communication with the ship was lost. The two rescued crew members were found in life rafts, providing a small but significant breakthrough in the search. Authorities continued to scan the surrounding waters for additional rafts, debris or signs of other survivors. The incident also highlighted the risks faced by seafarers travelling along busy international shipping routes in the Bay of Bengal. The Ocean Winner had departed Paradip carrying a commercial cargo of iron ore and was bound for Singapore when the voyage ended abruptly. Captain Alekha Charan Sahoo, deputy conservator of the Paradip Port Authority, expressed hope for the safety of those still missing and said he was praying for the crew. Indian authorities have continued coordinating the operation, with the Coast Guard and other vessels involved in the search. The focus remained on locating the missing sailors and bringing them to safety. For families and colleagues waiting for news, every hour of the operation carries enormous significance.     UN experts urge Canada to protect Sikh Activist

    United Nations human rights experts have called on Canada to strengthen security measures for Sikh activist Moninder Singh, citing repeated warnings from Canadian authorities about credible threats to his life. In a letter sent to the Canadian government on June 3 and released publicly under standard UN procedures, five independent experts expressed concern over allegations of foreign intimidation and reprisals targeting Singh, a Canadian citizen. The experts noted that since 2022, Canadian authorities have issued Singh four separate “duty to warn” notices, informing him of serious and imminent threats to his safety. They urged Ottawa to ensure his protection, safeguard his family, and provide security for others facing similar risks. The letter also called on Canadian authorities to speed up investigations, hold those responsible accountable, provide justice to victims, and take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. The appeal was signed by UN special rapporteurs responsible for issues related to counterterrorism and human rights, freedom of peaceful assembly, human rights defenders, freedom of religion, and democratic international order. A copy of the communication was also shared with the Indian government. Singh visited Geneva earlier this year to seek international attention over what he described as the targeting of Sikh activists abroad and the broader issue of transnational repression. The case comes amid longstanding tensions between Canada and India following the 2023 killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar near a Sikh temple in British Columbia. Canadian authorities alleged Indian involvement in the assassination, an accusation New Delhi has consistently denied. The dispute strained diplomatic relations, leading both countries to expel diplomats in 2024. Although bilateral ties have improved under Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, concerns over the safety of Sikh activists continue to draw international attention. Singh, who supports the Khalistan movement advocating for an independent Sikh homeland, said the UN experts’ intervention highlights growing concerns over the safety of Sikh voices abroad.

    Petrol, diesel prices may fall further

    Petroleum product prices in Pakistan may see another reduction from August 5, offering potential relief to consumers already facing high fuel costs. According to sources within the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the price of petrol could decrease by Rs3.39 per litre, while high-speed diesel may become cheaper by Rs4.07 per litre. The latest calculations suggest that the price of petrol could fall to approximately Rs328.56 per litre after the proposed reduction. Similarly, the price of high-speed diesel may come down to an estimated Rs385.86 per litre. OGRA sources said the initial working for the possible price adjustment has been completed. The final decision, however, will depend on the government’s review of the latest calculations and other relevant factors before announcing the new prices. The possible reduction comes shortly after the government announced a cut in petroleum prices. In the previous adjustment, the government reduced the price of petrol by Rs4.08 per litre, while the price of diesel fell by Rs2.45 per litre. If the latest proposed cuts receive approval, consumers could see another decline in fuel prices within a short period. A reduction in petrol prices would directly benefit motorists and households that rely on private vehicles for daily commuting. Lower diesel prices could also provide some relief to the transport sector, as diesel powers a large number of commercial vehicles, buses, trucks and other heavy transport used to move people and goods across the country. A decline in fuel prices may also help reduce pressure on transportation and logistics costs. Since diesel plays a major role in the movement of agricultural produce, industrial goods and essential commodities, any reduction in its price could potentially ease some of the cost burden on businesses and consumers. However, the impact of the proposed reduction on overall inflation will depend on several factors, including transportation costs, exchange rate movements and international oil prices. The government is expected to announce the final petroleum prices after completing its review and approving the new rates. The expected adjustment comes as consumers continue to closely monitor fuel prices because of their direct impact on household budgets and the cost of everyday goods and services. Any further reduction in petrol and diesel prices could provide some short-term financial relief to the public and businesses.
