JERUSALEM: US President Donald Trump’s envoy and son-in-law Jared Kushner has concluded two days of talks with Israeli and Hamas representatives without securing a clear breakthrough in efforts to revive Washington’s Gaza peace plan.

Kushner met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, following discussions with Hamas political leader Khalil Al-Hayya in Egypt a day earlier. The meetings were aimed at overcoming the deadlock surrounding the US-backed plan as fighting and Israeli military operations continue in Gaza.

An Israeli official said Netanyahu made clear that Israel would not withdraw from the positions outlined in the October ceasefire arrangement and would continue military operations in Gaza when deemed necessary. Israel has also maintained that reconstruction cannot begin until Hamas is fully disarmed.

The meeting between Kushner and Netanyahu lasted several hours and was also attended by Nickolay Mladenov, the Trump administration’s Board of Peace envoy for Gaza. Israeli officials described the discussions as deep and constructive, while a Board of Peace official called them productive and said the sides had agreed on a possible way forward without providing further details.

Netanyahu’s office said Israel and the Board of Peace agreed that Gaza’s disarmament and demilitarisation must be completed before major reconstruction begins. The two sides also agreed to form working groups focused on disarmament as well as sanitation, clean water and other public health needs in the territory.

The talks come as Netanyahu faces a challenging election campaign ahead of the October 27 vote, making major concessions on Gaza politically difficult, according to diplomats.

Kushner’s meeting with Hamas representatives in Egypt was his second known engagement with the group. He previously participated in talks with Hamas alongside US envoy Steve Witkoff in October 2025, negotiations that contributed to a ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages held by Hamas.

Earlier, Jared Kushner met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Monday as Washington stepped up efforts to revive its stalled plan for ending the Gaza war.

The meeting came a day after Kushner held talks in Cairo with Hamas representatives, including senior leader Khalil Al-Hayya, marking his second known direct engagement with the Palestinian group. Kushner was accompanied in Jerusalem by Trump’s Board of Peace envoy for Gaza, Nickolay Mladenov.

The latest diplomatic push comes amid deep disagreements over the implementation of the US-backed Gaza plan. Under the proposal, Hamas and other armed groups would surrender their weapons while Israeli forces would gradually withdraw from Gaza. An international stabilisation force, alongside a new Palestinian police force, would then help maintain security in the territory.

Netanyahu, however, has insisted that Israeli troops will not withdraw until Hamas and other armed groups are fully disarmed. Israel has also rejected a separate US-backed roadmap aimed at moving the broader peace plan forward.

Diplomats say Israel is unlikely to make major concessions on Gaza ahead of the country’s October 27 election, adding another challenge to Washington’s efforts to break the deadlock.

The talks have gained urgency as implementation of the ceasefire framework remains limited, with Israeli strikes continuing in Gaza despite commitments under the US plan. Hamas has said it accepts the proposed disarmament framework but argues that its implementation depends on Israel fulfilling its own obligations, including withdrawing forces and ending attacks.

Kushner previously met Hamas officials alongside US envoy Steve Witkoff in October 2025. Those discussions helped produce an agreement that led to a Gaza ceasefire and the release of hostages captured during the October 7, 2023 attack.

The latest meetings suggest Washington is seeking to reopen negotiations and bridge the widening gap between Israel and Hamas before the Gaza peace initiative loses further momentum.

Murtaza said that if Nawaz Sharif was able to go to Kashmir today and demand the prime minister’s position, it was partly because of the PPP’s political contribution. The PPP leader also raised serious concerns over violence during the polling process. He said a PPP worker was killed on election day. Murtaza described the incident as a serious matter that would remain part of the political record. He said history would record what happened during the elections. It would also establish who was responsible for the violence and who lost his life. The allegations came after the PML-N emerged as the leading party in the first phase of the AJK elections.       ISLAMABAD:Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) Justice Sarfraz Dogar has said that public confidence in the Islamabad High Court and district courts has increased significantly, as reflected by the sharp rise in the number of cases being filed before the courts. Addressing a ceremony held at the Islamabad High Court on the occasion of Independence Day, Justice Sarfraz Dogar said that the number of cases filed in the high court had increased nearly fivefold. He noted that there was a time when the daily filing rate remained below 50 cases, whereas the court is now receiving around 250 cases every day. According to the chief justice, the substantial increase in case filings indicates that people are increasingly turning to courts in the hope of obtaining relief and having their grievances addressed through the legal system. He said the growing number of cases was also an indication of the public’s confidence in the judiciary and its ability to provide justice. Justice Dogar acknowledged that the judiciary was facing several challenges, particularly a shortage of judges. Despite these difficulties, he said, courts were continuing to perform their responsibilities with dedication and commitment. He stressed that the primary responsibility of the judiciary was to ensure that every deserving person received justice in a fair, impartial and transparent manner. He further highlighted the importance of cooperation between judges and lawyers, describing the bench and the bar as two essential pillars of the judicial system. He said effective coordination between the two was necessary to improve the delivery of justice and ensure that citizens could obtain timely relief. Speaking about the country’s future, the chief justice said that the protection and stability of Pakistan was a collective responsibility. He urged citizens to keep the country away from conflict, disorder, extremism and politics based on hatred. He emphasized that Pakistan’s progress could only be achieved through sincerity, mutual respect, unity and a positive contribution from all segments of society. Justice Dogar also referred to what he described as Pakistan’s significant diplomatic and defence achievements over the past two years. He said the country had strengthened its position internationally through effective diplomatic efforts and had emerged as an important voice for peace in the international community. The chief justice particularly highlighted developments in defence cooperation among Muslim countries. He described efforts to bring Islamic countries together on a common platform for defence cooperation as a historic development. According to him, the initiative reflected a vision that had previously been associated with former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who had advocated greater unity and cooperation among Muslim nations. Justice Sarfraz Dogar said Pakistan’s national institutions had an important role to play in strengthening the country and maintaining public confidence. He stressed that institutions must continue to work according to constitutional principles, the rule of law and national interests. He concluded by emphasizing the importance of tolerance, unity and respect in addressing differences. He said that Pakistan could move forward only when its institutions and citizens worked together to promote justice, stability, peace and national development.

The Makkah agreement was signed on Aug 7 by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Makkah. The agreement provides a framework for stronger collective defence cooperation and states that an armed attack against any one of the three countries will be regarded as an attack against all. Sharif said the agreement had further strengthened the strategic relationship among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye while conveying a message of unity and peace across the region. The prime minister also stressed that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia should now build on their strategic partnership by expanding economic and agricultural cooperation. He said stronger trade and investment ties could help transform the longstanding relationship between the two countries into a broader and more mutually beneficial economic partnership. Focus on agriculture and food security Agriculture emerged as a key area of discussion during the meeting, with both sides reviewing ways to increase cooperation in agricultural productivity, technology, research and development, and efficient water management. He said Islamabad was keen to expand the range and volume of agricultural products supplied to the Kingdom. The prime minister announced that a delegation of Pakistani agricultural experts would soon travel to Riyadh to continue discussions and explore practical areas of cooperation. The delegation is expected to focus on improving agricultural productivity through modern technology, research and more efficient use of water resources. The Saudi minister, meanwhile, reaffirmed Riyadh’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Pakistan in agriculture, water management and food security, according to the Prime Minister’s Office. A broader strategic partnership The meeting reflects Islamabad’s effort to translate its close political and strategic ties with Riyadh into greater commercial and economic engagement. Saudi Arabia has historically remained one of Pakistan’s most important partners, providing financial support and assistance during periods of economic pressure.
