    Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) has issued two separate notifications regarding the retirement and subsequent contractual appointment of Professor Dr Nighat Shah, daughter of former Sindh chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah. According to the university’s notifications, Dr Nighat Shah retired from government service on August 12, 2026, but was allowed to continue working at the university as a Professor of Gynaecology (BPS-21) for another three years on a contractual basis. The two notifications were issued separately. One formally announced her retirement, while the other approved her immediate appointment on a three-year contract following her retirement. According to the retirement notification issued by JSMU Registrar Dr Azam Khan, Dr Nighat Shah, who was serving as Professor of Gynaecology and Obstetrics in BPS-21 as well as Pro-Vice Chancellor, retired from government service with effect from the afternoon of August 12. The notification also referred to an earlier order dated October 6, 2025, under which she had been appointed Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university. Her tenure as Pro-Vice Chancellor was linked to her period of government service and was therefore due to end upon her retirement. However, a separate notification issued by the university states that, following a decision by the Sindh government and approval from the competent authority, the Syndicate, Dr Nighat Shah was permitted to continue her services at JSMU as Professor of Gynaecology for three years on a contractual basis. The new contract will take effect from August 13, 2026, just one day after her retirement from government service. The arrangement means that, according to the university’s own notifications, Dr Nighat Shah formally retired from government employment on August 12 but resumed her professional duties at the same institution without any break from August 13 under a three-year contractual appointment. The development has drawn attention because of the timing of the two notifications, with the retirement order followed immediately by the contractual appointment. Dr Nighat Shah was appointed Pro-Vice Chancellor of JSMU in October 2025. Her new contractual role, however, is specifically as Professor of Gynaecology rather than as Pro-Vice Chancellor. The three-year contract will allow her to continue teaching and providing academic and professional services at the university until the completion of the approved contractual period, subject to the terms and conditions of her appointment.

    The founder of Evergrande, the Chinese property giant whose collapse triggered a nationwide housing market crisis, has been sentenced to life in prison and stripped of all personal property. Hui Ka Yan pleaded guilty in April to multiple charges, including embezzling assets and corporate bribery. The Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court also imposed fines totaling 15.82 billion yuan, roughly £1.73 billion or $2.35 billion, on his former companies over a range of offenses that included falsifying financial records and concealing debt. The sentencing marks a major turning point in the fallout from Evergrande’s collapse, which shook China’s property sector and inflicted heavy losses on investors and domestic banks alike. The court said Hui and his businesses seriously disrupted the Chinese property market, causing significant economic damage. Other former Evergrande executives, including Hui’s two sons Xu Zhijian and Xu Tenghe, received jail terms ranging from 22 months to 18 years, according to Chinese state media. Once ranked as Asia’s richest man, Hui has watched his fortune and influence collapse alongside his company. Also known as Xu Jiayin, he grew up in rural China raised by his grandmother before entering the property industry and founding Evergrande in 1996. He guided the company through a period of rapid expansion fueled by heavy borrowing, eventually building Evergrande into China’s largest real estate developer with a stock market valuation exceeding $50 billion, roughly £36.7 billion. At his peak, Hui held the distinction of being Asia’s wealthiest individual. The company suffered a major setback when Beijing introduced new measures in 2020 aimed at curbing debt across the property sector. As Evergrande struggled to keep up with interest payments, it began selling properties at steep discounts to stay afloat before ultimately collapsing in 2021. Court proceedings in April revealed that the company had taken in millions of dollars in pre sale funds from prospective homebuyers that were never used for the construction they were intended to finance. Instead, that money was redirected toward new development projects, leaving hundreds of housing projects unfinished. In March 2024, Hui was separately fined $6.5 million and banned for life from China’s capital markets after regulators found the company had overstated its revenue by $78 billion. Evergrande’s stock market value shrank by 99 percent before the company’s shares were delisted from the Hong Kong exchange in August 2025, ending more than fifteen years of trading. The company’s implosion is widely seen as a key trigger for the broader downturn in China’s property market that continues to weigh on the country’s economy. At its peak, Evergrande stood as the largest firm in an industry that accounted for roughly a third of China’s gross domestic product, serving as both a major driver of economic growth and a critical revenue source for local governments. The sector’s ongoing troubles have continued to pressure the world’s second largest economy, with several other major developers facing their own financial distress in the years since Evergrande’s fall.

    Court rejects Gohar’s FIR plea against PM

    A district and sessions court in Islamabad has dismissed a petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, who had sought the registration of a criminal case against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, and several other senior government officials over the events of the November 26 protest. The court issued a detailed 17-page written judgment, outlining the reasons for rejecting the application. The verdict was authored by Additional Sessions Judge Afzal Majoka, who concluded that the petitioner had failed to provide sufficient evidence to justify the registration of a first information report (FIR). According to the judgment, Barrister Gohar was given multiple opportunities to appear before the court and record his statement as an eyewitness. However, the court noted that he did not record his testimony despite repeated chances. The ruling further stated that the petitioner neither presented eyewitnesses nor submitted legally admissible evidence in support of his allegations. The court observed that the application relied mainly on claims without providing documentary or forensic material required to initiate criminal proceedings. The petition alleged that 12 people lost their lives and more than 38 PTI supporters were injured during the November 26 protest. However, the court noted that no post-mortem reports, death certificates, medical records, digital videos, photographs or other primary evidence were produced to verify the claims. The judgment emphasized that criminal action cannot be initiated against senior public officeholders solely on the basis of verbal allegations. It said there must be credible and legally admissible evidence before the court can direct the registration of an FIR against high-ranking officials. Among those named in the petition were Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Information Minister Atta Tarar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Islamabad Inspector General of Police Ali Nasir, DIG Operations Ali Raza, SSP Operations Zeeshan Haider and other officials. The court also observed that if the petitioner believed that government institutions were not cooperating in the investigation, he had legal options available under Pakistani law. These included approaching the courts for further investigative measures, including exhumation where legally justified. The judgment noted that no such legal remedies were pursued.

    Nine cops martyred in Hangu terrorist attack

    PESHAWAR: Nine police personnel, including DSP Diyar Khan, were martyred and 28 others injured after terrorists attacked the Khazina Banda police check post in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Hangu district late Wednesday night. According to KP Inspector General Zulfiqar Hameed, the attackers launched a coordinated assault while officers were on duty. Police reinforcements rushed to the scene but came under an ambush, damaging an armoured personnel carrier. Police retaliated strongly, killing 15 terrorists and injuring several others during an intense gun battle. The IG praised the bravery of the officers and vowed that operations against terrorists would continue across the province. In a separate incident, terrorists also attacked a police check post in Peshawar’s Adezai area. Police returned fire, forcing the attackers to flee without causing any casualties. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the Hangu attack, paid tribute to the martyred officers, and expressed condolences to their families. He also briefed President Asif Ali Zardari on the country’s security situation, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. The president praised the sacrifices of the security forces and reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to eradicating terrorism.
