Luigi Mangione pleads guilty to federal charges in killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson

Luigi Mangione has entered a guilty plea in Manhattan federal court regarding the December 2024 fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare Chief Executive Officer Brian Thompson. Appearing before US District Judge Margaret Garnett in prison attire, the 28-year-old formally admitted to targeting and shooting Thompson, confirming that he acted with full knowledge that his actions were illegal.

During his statement to the court, Mangione detailed his preparations leading up to the attack. He explained that after suffering years of severe back pain and struggling with the health insurance system, he researched UnitedHealthcare’s annual investor conference. Mangione admitted to impersonating an institutional investor to gain event details, manufacturing firearm components using a 3D printer, and traveling to Manhattan specifically to shoot the executive.

The guilty plea resolves federal stalking charges that carry significant prison time and eliminates a federal trial. Following the hearing, Mangione’s defense team filed motions requesting the dismissal of pending state murder charges in New York, arguing double-jeopardy protections. However, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office affirmed its intention to proceed with state prosecution.

Sonu Nigam opens up on being banned by music companies over copyright fight

Sonu Nigam recently revisited one of the most controversial chapters of his career. He spoke about it during a candid conversation on the YouTube show Game Changers with Komal Nahta. The topic centered on the time music companies banned him after he raised his voice on copyright issues. Nigam began by looking back at how well his career was going before the controversy started. He said albums kept releasing one after another during that time. Audiences loved his work, and everything seemed to be going smoothly. That changed the moment he raised concerns over copyright. Several music companies responded by cutting ties with him entirely. He recalled how people within the industry began labelling him an activist at the time. The tone behind that label, he noted, was often dismissive rather than respectful. Looking back now, he finds it ironic that those same companies eventually started paying him royalties. He added that representatives from these companies now visit his home as guests. Nigam also explained his reasoning behind taking such a bold stand at the time. He said someone had to take the risk, comparing his decision to belling the cat. According to him, he felt he was meant for something bigger than just singing. He believed he was destined to carry forward a movement that legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar had once started. That movement, he said, had never reached its logical conclusion. When asked whether he felt scared during that turbulent period, Nigam said fear was not something he experienced. He admitted he never expected to actually get banned in the first place. He initially believed things would eventually work out on their own. However, as the situation kept worsening and more doors closed around him, he found strength through his live performances instead. He felt confident that nobody could stop him once he stepped on stage. Nigam went on to describe how his relationship with music companies gradually improved over time. He credited changing laws, along with the industry’s eventual realization that his stance had been justified. According to him, this shift slowly repaired his equation with these companies. Today, he said, their interactions feel warm and almost familial in nature. Reflecting on the entire journey, Nigam suggested that everyone involved likely needed to go through that difficult phase for real change to happen. He noted that any bitterness or resentment that once existed between him and the industry has since completely faded away, leaving behind a much healthier relationship.

Ronaldo wedding rumor sends fans to wrong Church

FUNCHAL: Hundreds of Cristiano Ronaldo fans reportedly gathered outside a historic cathedral in Portugal over the weekend, hoping to catch a glimpse of the football superstar on his wedding day — only to discover that they had arrived for someone else’s ceremony. Rumors circulating on social media and in media reports claimed that Ronaldo was set to marry his longtime partner, Georgina Rodriguez, on Saturday in Funchal, the capital of Portugal’s Madeira island. Although Ronaldo’s family reportedly denied the claims, the speculation was enough to send scores of excited fans and journalists to the city’s historic Sé Cathedral. Many waited outside for hours, holding mobile phones and cameras in anticipation of the arrival of the Al Nassr star and Rodriguez. But the expected celebrity wedding never happened. Instead, the cathedral was preparing to host the wedding of a local couple, Nicole and Fabio. Fabio had already arrived at the church, while Nicole faced an unexpected challenge: getting through the crowd that had gathered outside believing Ronaldo would soon appear. The unusual situation created confusion around the cathedral, with tourists, fans and members of the media filling the surrounding streets. The Sé Cathedral administration later addressed the incident on its official Facebook page, congratulating the newly married couple while explaining that the large number of journalists and tourists had caused considerable confusion. The church eventually had to be closed while the wedding ceremony took place. In another post, the cathedral described the scene outside as something it had never experienced before, noting that the bride had difficulty entering the church because of the crowd. The guests also appeared to find the situation amusing. One guest joked to local media that they suddenly felt like celebrities themselves. Another questioned how anyone could have believed Ronaldo would arrive for a wedding without significant security arrangements. Ronaldo himself appeared to see the funny side of the episode. The footballer reportedly reacted to an Instagram post about the confusion with laughing-with-tears emojis, giving fans a glimpse of his reaction without directly confirming or denying any future wedding plans. Ronaldo and Rodriguez have been together for years and became engaged last year. Reports have previously claimed that Ronaldo presented Rodriguez with an expensive engagement ring featuring a large diamond. Despite the latest frenzy in Madeira, the couple has not announced a wedding date. For now, fans hoping to witness Ronaldo walk down the aisle will have to wait — and perhaps check the guest list before heading to the church.

China rejects US sanctions on research institutions

China has strongly opposed a US decision to place several Chinese research institutions on a sanctions list. Beijing criticised the move on Wednesday. It accused Washington of using national security concerns to restrict scientific and technological cooperation between the two countries. A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce said Beijing would take necessary steps to protect the legitimate rights and interests of its research institutions. The spokesperson also said China wanted to maintain a stable environment for normal scientific exchanges and cooperation with international partners. Beijing accused the United States of repeatedly expanding the definition of national security. It said Washington had created discriminatory barriers against Chinese institutions. China also criticised what it described as the politicisation and weaponisation of scientific research. According to Beijing, such policies could damage cooperation between researchers and universities in both countries. The Chinese government said the US measures were against the broader global trend of international cooperation in science and technological innovation. Beijing urged Washington to withdraw what it called unjustified accusations against Chinese research institutions. China also called on the United States to correct its policies as soon as possible. It demanded fair, just and non-discriminatory treatment for Chinese research organisations. The dispute comes amid wider tensions between Washington and Beijing over technology, trade and national security. The United States has increasingly tightened restrictions on Chinese access to advanced technologies. Semiconductor manufacturing has become a major area of competition between the two countries. China is also working to expand its domestic semiconductor industry. Beijing aims to reduce its dependence on advanced foreign chips affected by US export restrictions. Last week, the US Department of Defence updated a list of foreign institutions it considers involved in “problematic activities”. The updated list included Chinese defence-related academies and several universities. Shanghai-based Fudan University was also among the institutions added to the list. The latest move is likely to add another point of tension to already strained US-China relations. Beijing has repeatedly opposed US measures targeting Chinese companies, universities and research organisations. Washington, meanwhile, has maintained that its restrictions are linked to national security and technology concerns.

Niall and Harry were too nervous for zero-gravity shoot, reveals Louis

Louis Tomlinson has shared a fun, previously untold detail about the making of One Direction’s Drag Me Down music video. A clip of the singer has resurfaced online. In it, he looks back at the time the band filmed at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. One Direction remains the only band to ever shoot a music video at the facility. According to Tomlinson, the original concept was even bigger than what fans finally saw. The band had planned to film a segment in actual zero-gravity conditions. But the plan never made it to the screen. The reason, Tomlinson revealed, was simple. Niall Horan got nervous about the idea. “And he will not be too happy about me telling this but we didn’t do it cause Niall was too scared,” Tomlinson said in the clip. The host then pushed back, asking if it was really just Niall who refused. Tomlinson didn’t let Harry Styles off the hook either. “To be fair, it was Niall and Harry to be fair,” he said, laughing. Fans have long loved Drag Me Down for its space-age visuals. Now it turns out the video could have looked even more dramatic, had the full zero-gravity plan gone ahead. Drag Me Down was released in 2015. It served as the lead single from One Direction’s fifth and final studio album, Made in the A.M. The music video saw all four remaining members, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Liam Payne, suited up in real spacesuits. They filmed around training jets on location at the space center. The song went on to become one of the band’s biggest global hits. It broke streaming records within hours of release. It also topped charts in multiple countries. The track later won Best Music Video at the BRIT Awards in 2016. More than a decade later, One Direction’s fans are still discovering new layers to their favourite era. This latest story, straight from Tomlinson himself, has only added to the nostalgia surrounding the band’s space-themed video. For many longtime fans, hearing these old memories resurface feels like a small gift. It’s a reminder of just how much creative risk-taking went into the band’s biggest moments, even the ones that never made the final cut.

Misha Japanwala brings Pakistani artistry to The Odyssey

Pakistani artist and fashion designer Misha Japanwala has achieved a major international milestone, collaborating with the creative team behind director Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster epic The Odyssey to design two custom sculptural pieces worn by Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o. In Nolan’s cinematic adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem, Nyong’o portrays the iconic role of Helen of Troy—mythology’s “face that launched a thousand ships.” The collaboration came about directly through Nyong’o, who previously wore a custom breastplate designed by Japanwala to the 2023 Tony Awards and personally recommended the Pakistani designer to the film’s Oscar-nominated costume designer, Ellen Mirojnick. Speaking about the creative process, Mirojnick explained that capturing the essence of Helen of Troy required balancing an enigmatic, regal presence with the film’s grounded realism. To achieve this look, Japanwala created an asymmetrical neck and shoulder plate crafted in bronze, designed to resemble a sculpted piece of classical statuary. Nyong’o wears the metallic structure as a capelet layered over a draped gown during a pivotal scene where Helen hosts Telemachus (played by Tom Holland) in Sparta. For Helen’s final scene in the film, Japanwala designed a second piece: a gleaming bronze choker paired with a heavy chainmail caftan-gown. Taking to social media to celebrate the announcement, Japanwala expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to contribute her signature body-casting artistry to a monumental cinematic production: ”The Odyssey — the honor of a lifetime to contribute to Christopher Nolan’s vision and work with the legend Ellen Mirojnick and Sara O’Donnell to create these two very special sculptural works that adorn Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy! Thank you Lupita for championing my work, and to the costume designers for trusting me to bring these pieces to life. A dream come true to be a tiny part of this monumental film and cinematic history.” This high-profile Hollywood feature marks the latest international success for Japanwala, whose wearable sculptures and body castings reject conventional beauty standards by celebrating organic forms, scarring, and individuality. The Parsons School of Design graduate previously gained global attention for creating custom metallic body pieces for international celebrities, including rapper Cardi B’s viral pregnancy reveal and supermodel Gigi Hadid. With The Odyssey dominating global box offices, Japanwala’s striking designs represent a proud moment for contemporary Pakistani artistry, showcasing homegrown creative talent on one of cinema’s biggest stages.

    Transporters announce nationwide wheel-jam strike

A nationwide wheel-jam strike is set to begin on August 8 after transporters’ associations announced a complete suspension of freight operations in protest against rising operational costs, frequent fuel price revisions and what they described as unfair treatment by authorities. The Pakistan Mini Mazda Association and the All Pakistan Goods Transport Owners Association said the strike could bring cargo movement across the country to a standstill, warning that imports and exports may face serious disruptions if the government fails to address their concerns. Addressing a joint press conference in Lahore, Pakistan Mini Mazda Association Central President Tanveer Jatt urged the government to hold immediate talks with transport representatives. He demanded that petroleum prices be revised on a monthly basis instead of daily and called for relief from toll taxes and excessive traffic fines, arguing that current policies have placed an unbearable financial burden on transport operators. All Pakistan Goods Transport Owners Association President Chaudhry Owais Gujjar stressed that axle-load regulations should be enforced strictly according to the law and alleged that corruption had become widespread during implementation. He also claimed that transporters, despite paying billions of rupees annually in toll taxes, continue to face poor road infrastructure, which contributes to accidents. Gujjar further accused officials of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Secretariat and the Highway Patrol Police of routinely harassing transporters on highways, urging the authorities to focus on their official responsibilities instead of creating difficulties for drivers. Transport leader Khalid Arain said the government’s policies had left transporters with no option but to protest. He maintained that transport operators in Pakistan receive little support despite paying advance taxes and claimed that no compensation had been provided to vehicle owners whose trucks were destroyed in militant attacks. He also criticized the heavy use of traffic fines, saying overloading rules should be enforced through consultation rather than punitive measures. Arain expressed hope that the dispute could be resolved quickly if meaningful negotiations were held between the government and transport representatives before the strike begins.
