motherhood impacts health

Motherhood impacts health more than fatherhood

Having children brings major changes to parents physical mental and social lives but a new study suggests that mothers are affected much more than fathers.

The research published in the Journal of Family Studies looked at how becoming a parent changes health and daily habits including exercise and smoking.

The study found that becoming a father has little effect on men’s overall health before or after the birth of a child.

However the situation is different for women.

Researchers found that a mother’s age and the number of children she has can influence her health.

Women with only one child or those whose children have reached their teenage years were more likely to experience symptoms of depression.

On the other hand mothers with two or more young children were generally found to have better overall health.

The biggest lifestyle change was seen in physical activity.  Mothers were much less likely to exercise than fathers.

According to the study only 16% of mothers with young children exercise regularly while men’s exercise habits remain almost the same whether they have children or not.

Researchers believe this is because mothers spend much more time caring for their children leaving them with less time to look after their own health.

As a result their physical and mental well being may be affected.

  • New image reveal Sun’s surface in amazing detail

Looking directly at the Sun is impossible and capturing a clear image of it is even more difficult. However, new images of the star at the center of our solar system have been released showing its surface in extraordinary detail. The images were captured by the Inouye Solar Telescope located in the US state of Hawaii. It is considered the world’s most powerful solar telescope and is capable of observing the Sun in unprecedented detail. The telescope has captured images of the Sun before but these new photographs provide the most detailed views yet of the surface of our solar system’s star. A unique wing-like pattern can be seen across the Sun’s surface in the images. According to scientists, this pattern is associated with the Sun’s magnetic field which is moving in a wave-like manner due to hot gases. Closer look at Sun’s surface The images reveal processes occurring on the Sun’s surface that may help explain a decades-old mystery: why the Sun’s outer atmosphere known as the corona is millions of times hotter than its visible surface. Experts say these are the highest-resolution images of the Sun’s surface ever captured. In earlier observations, the telescope detected sand-like structures on the Sun’s surface making it appear as though grains of sand were being viewed under a microscope. Each of these structures was roughly the size of France in terms of area but the new images reveal much greater detail. The new photographs show a distinctive pattern on the Sun’s surface associated with rapidly moving plasma. Scientists have identified this pattern as Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities (KHIs). Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities have been observed on Earth during the formation of patterns in lakes, oceans and clouds. They have also been detected on Jupiter and Saturn but their presence on the Sun had not previously been confirmed. Why Sun’s magnetic activity matters? Solar activity particularly changes in the Sun’s magnetic fields can affect power grids, satellites, GPS positioning and global communications on Earth. These magnetic fields are generated by the Sun’s extremely hot plasma but scientists have not yet fully understood how they work. Experts know that these magnetic fields can trigger sudden releases of enormous amounts of heat but exactly why this happens remains unclear. The new images, however, provide clues that could help explain why the Sun’s visible surface has a temperature of around 6,000°C while its outer atmosphere can reach temperatures of millions of degrees Celsius.

  • Why your brain stays alert in a new place

Have you ever slept easily in your own bed but struggled to sleep in a hotel, at a relative’s house or in a completely new place?  Even when the bed is comfortable and you are tired from traveling, you may wake up several times during the night. This is quite common and is known as the “First Night Effect.” Experts say that when we sleep somewhere unfamiliar the brain may not fully relax. Instead part of it stays more alert and keeps checking the new surroundings. Why does the brain stay alert? When you enter a new environment your brain needs time to get used to unfamiliar sounds lights temperature and movements. During the first night one part of the brain may remain more active and respond quickly to unusual sounds or possible disturbances. This is believed to be a natural way for the brain to adapt to a new environment. How much can sleep be affected? The First Night Effect does not affect everyone in the same way. Some people may sleep for around 20 to 30 minutes less than usual while others may mainly experience lighter or more interrupted sleep. This can leave you feeling tired or less refreshed the next morning even if you actually slept for several hours. Children and older adults may notice it more Age can also play a role. Children and teenagers may be more sensitive to changes in their sleeping environment. Older adults may also notice changes in their sleep while younger adults may experience fewer effects. From an evolutionary point of view staying alert in an unfamiliar place may have helped humans remain aware of possible dangers. It is not always the brain Poor sleep in a new place can have many other causes. Travel fatigue, a different schedule room temperature bright lights outside noise an unfamiliar bed or pillow and other people nearby can all disturb sleep. Some people sleep better away from home Interestingly the First Night Effect does not happen to everyone. Some people actually sleep better in a new place. Someone who is extremely tired after a long journey may sleep deeply despite being in unfamiliar surroundings. Similarly people who experience stress or poor sleep at home may find a new environment relaxing and sleep better. Worrying about sleep can make it worse Sometimes the biggest problem is not the new place but the fear of not being able to sleep. If you go to bed thinking, “I won’t sleep tonight” you may become more anxious and make it harder for your brain to relax. People who worry a lot about sleep may be more sensitive to the First Night Effect. How to sleep better in a new place A few simple habits may help your body and brain adjust. Keep your usual sleeping and waking times as much as possible. Make the room quiet dark and comfortably cool. Reduce phone and laptop use before bedtime. Give yourself some time to relax after arriving instead of going straight to bed. Take a familiar pillow blanket or other comforting item if possible. Read a book listen to soft music or follow another relaxing bedtime routine. Most importantly do not panic after one bad night of sleep. In many cases the brain becomes familiar with the new surroundings and sleep improves naturally. So, if you wake up several times during your first night in a hotel or another unfamiliar place. it does not necessarily mean something is wrong. Your brain may simply be taking time to decide that the new environment is safe.

  • Night or Morning when to charge your phone?

Many smartphone users wonder whether it is better to charge their phone overnight or wait until the morning. Some people plug in their phone before going to bed while others prefer charging it after they wake up.  According to technology experts both methods are generally safe but one may be better for your battery’s long term health. Modern smartphones are designed with smart charging technology that helps protect the battery. Once the battery reaches 100%, the phone automatically reduces or stops charging to prevent overcharging. This means leaving your phone plugged in overnight is usually not dangerous and it is very unlikely to cause the battery to explode or become damaged under normal conditions. However experts say that keeping the phone connected to the charger for many hours is not always the best habit. Even after the battery is full a small amount of voltage can remain which may slowly add stress to the battery over time. If this happens every night for months or years it could slightly reduce the battery’s overall lifespan. For this reason many experts recommend charging your phone in the morning whenever possible.  You can unplug it as soon as it reaches the charge level you need helping reduce unnecessary stress on the battery. Battery experts also suggest keeping your phone’s battery between 20% and 80% most of the time.  Staying within this range reduces chemical wear inside the battery and can help it last longer. If overnight charging is your only option there is no need to worry.  Most modern Android phones and iPhones include features such as Adaptive Charging or Optimized Battery Charging. These features learn your daily routine and slow down charging overnight reaching 100% only shortly before you usually unplug the phone. This helps reduce long term battery wear. Heat is another important factor that affects battery life. Using your phone for heavy gaming video editing or other demanding tasks while it is charging can cause it to become very hot. High temperatures can shorten the battery’s lifespan more quickly than charging overnight. Experts also recommend using the original charger or a trusted high quality replacement. Cheap or low quality chargers and cables may not provide stable power and could affect battery performance. It is also a good idea to avoid charging your phone under a pillow blanket or in any place where heat cannot escape easily. Another useful tip is to avoid letting the battery drop to 0% on a regular basis. Instead try to charge it when it falls to around 20%, and if possible unplug it when it reaches about 80%. In the end overnight charging is much safer than it used to be because of modern battery technology. However if you want your phone’s battery to stay healthy for as long as possible charging when needed using adaptive charging features avoiding excessive heat and keeping the battery between 20% and 80% are the best habits to follow.

  • Henna hair dye benefits and possible risks

Henna, also known as mehndi has been used for centuries as a natural hair dye and conditioner.  It can give hair a beautiful reddish brown color while making it feel conditioned. However like any hair treatment henna can cause problems if it is used incorrectly or if someone is sensitive to it.  Knowing the possible side effects can help you use it more safely. Allergic reactions Some people may develop an allergic reaction after using henna. Possible signs include itching burning redness swelling or skin rashes. To reduce the risk do a small patch test before applying henna to your entire scalp.  Wait and check for any reaction before using it more widely. Dry and dull hair Henna can sometimes make hair feel dry especially when it is used too often or left on for too long. If your hair tends to be dry, consider following your henna treatment with a good conditioner or using a suitable moisturizing hair product. Changes in hair color The final color from henna can vary depending on the quality of the powder how long it stays on the hair and your natural hair color. Using henna repeatedly can make the color darker over time. This may not always give the shade you want so avoid applying it too frequently. Burning or Irritation Some people may experience burning itching or redness after applying henna.  This could be a sign of irritation or an allergic reaction. Follow the instructions provided with the product and avoid leaving henna on your scalp longer than recommended. After the treatment rinse your hair and scalp thoroughly. Changes in hair texture Although henna is often used as a natural conditioner frequent use may make some people’s hair feel rough or stiff. To keep your hair healthy balance henna treatments with regular conditioning and moisturizing. If you notice ongoing irritation dryness or other unusual changes stop using the product and consider speaking with a dermatologist.

  • Survey of Käthe Kollwitz’s legacy

The Museum of Modern Art in New York  exhibits the first major museum retrospective devoted to the German printmaker and sculptor Käthe Kollwitz (1867–1945).The exhibition serves as reassessment of an artist who chose raw human emotion over abstract aesthetics. The survey features roughly 120 works on paper and evocative bronze sculptures gathered from private and public collections across North America and Europe. Käthe Kollwitz originally trained as a painter before turning to printmaking, etching, and charcoal drawing. She quickly realized that black-and-white graphic arts provided a far more direct, accessible, and potent medium for addressing the social injustices around her. She lived through the tumultuous transition of late 19th-century industrialization. The revolution followed by the political instability and devastating carnage of two world wars in Berlin. However, Kollwitz dedicated her career to giving form to the silent suffering of society’s most vulnerable. When many of her contemporaries were exploring radical formal abstraction, Kollwitz stayed firmly rooted in figuration. She viewed her artistic talent not as a path toward personal prestige, but as a moral imperative. As Kollwitz famously noted in her journal, she felt a profound duty to give voice to humanity’s immense burdens. It was a motivation clearly reflected in her emotionally charged compositions. The retrospective marks several crucial series and individual masterpieces that define Kollwitz’s career. Early landmark series included A Weaver’s Revolt (1890s) and Peasant War (1902–1908). They showed her skill in capturing collective resistance, class struggle, and the violent fallout of peasant rebellions. Her works like Woman with Dead Child (1903) and her recurring depictions of mothers shielding their young. This theme is also dominant in her famous Mütter (Mothers) lithographs. These works demonstrate her ability to channel deep personal empathy into universal symbols of protective instinct. Kollwitz produced woodcuts and sculptural works that transformed personal bereavement into universal anti-war statements. She was distilling the excruciating grief of losing her younger son, Peter, during World War I. Kollwitz’s artistic contributions extend far beyond historical interest. Kollwitz established herself as a genius of Expressionist printmaking. As a result, she achieved widespread international acclaim during her lifetime. More importantly, she radically prioritized the female experience, framing motherhood, domestic hardship. She expressed grief not as passive domestic occurrences, but as central, powerful forces within history and politics. Above all, she achieved all that during an era when the international art world was almost exclusively governed by male perspectives, MoMA exhibition underscores the artist’s meticulous process through rare working proofs and preliminary studies. Such an event exposed how she repeatedly refined line, shade, and texture to maximize the emotional potency of each scene. It was Curated by Starr Figura. In a world still facing economic disparity, displacement, and armed conflict, Kollwitz’s unflinching commitment to human dignity continues to resonate with undeniable relevance. Her skills were bold woodcuts, deep etchings, and heavy bronzes. However, they serve as a reminder that art can act as both a mirror to societal trauma and a compassionate voice for justice.
