Oil prices slip despite Gulf tensions as markets f…

LONDON: Global oil prices edged lower on Thursday as investors shifted their attention from escalating military tensions in the Gulf to the resilience of energy supplies flowing through the region’s critical shipping routes.

Brent crude futures fell 96 cents, or 1.06%, to $89.78 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude declined 64 cents, or 0.76%, to $83.82 per barrel. The retreat came just a day after both benchmarks posted sharp gains, reflecting the market’s growing tendency to react briefly to geopolitical developments before refocusing on supply fundamentals.

Oil markets had surged on Wednesday after US President Donald Trump warned Iran of a forceful response following an alleged Iranian missile strike on a US military base in Jordan. The rally was further fuelled by fresh US military operations against Iranian targets and joint US-Saudi strikes on Iran-backed armed groups in Iraq, heightening fears of wider regional instability.

Despite the renewed military activity, analysts said traders are increasingly assessing whether the conflict will significantly disrupt global oil exports. Market participants remain closely focused on the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway that traditionally carries nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas shipments.

According to energy consultancy Rystad Energy, around 13 million barrels of Gulf oil per day are still reaching international markets despite severe disruptions and restrictions in the region. Analysts noted that alternative shipping routes and logistical adjustments have helped prevent a complete supply shock.

Lin Ye, Vice President of Commodity Markets at Rystad Energy, said geopolitical headlines continue to trigger rapid price spikes, but such rallies often fade as investors evaluate actual supply conditions and ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Meanwhile, shipping challenges persist after Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the Iran-aligned Houthi movement’s naval blockade in the Red Sea. Even so, some cargoes, particularly those linked to Chinese buyers, continue to move through alternative channels.

IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said the longer alternative export routes remain operational, the weaker Iran’s leverage over the Strait of Hormuz becomes. He added that markets are increasingly adapting to prolonged disruptions, reducing the lasting impact of geopolitical shocks on crude prices.

Although volatility remains elevated, traders are now placing greater emphasis on uninterrupted oil flows rather than military rhetoric, suggesting that supply resilience could continue to shape global energy markets in the weeks ahead.

Maine Democrats choose Troy Jackson for crucial US Senate race

Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson has officially secured the Democratic nomination for the US Senate, ending the party’s search for a new candidate after Graham Platner withdrew from the race earlier this month. Jackson will now challenge long-serving Republican Senator Susan Collins in what is expected to become one of the most closely watched Senate contests of the midterm elections. The Democratic Party selected Jackson during its state convention in Bangor, where an overwhelming majority of nearly 600 delegates voted in his favor. Business executive Saundra Pelletier, who also sought the nomination, was defeated by Jackson after party members backed his campaign by a wide margin. The nomination process was set in motion after former Democratic candidate Graham Platner stepped aside on July 10 following allegations of sexual assault. Platner has denied the accusations against him. His withdrawal forced party leaders to quickly organize a replacement ahead of the November election, making Jackson’s campaign one of the shortest Senate races of the year. During his acceptance speech, Jackson focused heavily on economic issues, arguing that rising living costs remain the biggest challenge facing ordinary Americans. He accused large corporations and wealthy individuals of benefiting while working families continue to struggle. Jackson also criticized Senator Collins, claiming she has consistently supported policies that favor powerful business interests over everyday workers. Jackson, a fifth-generation logger from northern Maine and a former Republican, had already built strong support within the Democratic Party before the convention. His supporters dominated the delegate selection process the previous weekend, effectively securing his path to the nomination. His campaign also announced that it had raised more than $1 million in donations within days of entering the race, providing a significant financial boost for the months ahead. The election is expected to play an important role in determining which party controls the US Senate. Republicans currently hold a 53 to 47 majority, and Democrats view Maine as one of their strongest opportunities to gain a seat. Senator Collins has represented Maine in the Senate since 1997 and currently serves as chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, a position that has allowed her to direct federal funding toward projects in her state. Maine has become an increasingly competitive political battleground. Although voters supported Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, Collins has repeatedly won statewide elections even while Democrats carried the state in presidential contests. Her victory in 2020 came by nearly nine percentage points despite Maine backing Joe Biden for president during the same election. Recent polling suggests the race could be highly competitive. A survey conducted by the University of New Hampshire found Jackson holding a narrow lead among likely voters, although political analysts expect the contest to remain close until Election Day. Collins also enters the campaign with a significant financial advantage, having built an election fund worth approximately $11 million. Economic concerns are expected to dominate the campaign, but immigration and social issues are also likely to receive considerable attention. Jackson has called for abolishing US Immigration and Customs Enforcement following several controversial incidents involving the agency this year. Collins, meanwhile, supported a major immigration enforcement funding package but has also called for a temporary pause in certain traffic stop operations carried out by ICE. President Donald Trump has publicly defended those enforcement measures and said they should continue. Jackson’s political record on social issues is also expected to come under scrutiny. Although he now supports abortion rights and same-sex marriage, he opposed both earlier in his legislative career before changing his position during his second term in the Maine Senate. Those past votes became a campaign issue during his unsuccessful bid for the Democratic nomination for governor earlier this year. Republicans have already begun attacking Jackson’s candidacy. The Senate Leadership Fund, a Republican political action committee that plans to spend at least $42 million in Maine, launched an advertising campaign highlighting a 2021 incident in which Jackson threw a water bottle during a heated debate in the state legislature. The advertisement questions his temperament and leadership style. Jackson acknowledged the incident in a recent interview, saying he regretted throwing the bottle and admitting he allowed his emotions to get the better of him during the argument.

Questions mount over funding as violence mars London Kashmir protest

A protest held in central London in the name of solidarity with Kashmir has come under scrutiny following allegations over its funding and organisation, while reports of violence against a senior journalist have further fuelled controversy surrounding the demonstration. According to claims circulating among sections of the British Pakistani and Kashmiri community, around 50 coaches were arranged to transport participants from Bradford, Manchester and Birmingham to London. Some community members have alleged that the overall cost of the mobilisation exceeded £500,000 and have publicly questioned who financed the event, calling for greater transparency over its funding and logistics. Community sources further alleged that some families were offered a free day trip to London, including complimentary coach travel, to encourage participation in the demonstration. According to the sources, the offer attracted families who joined the trip. Allegations circulating on social media have also suggested that foreign elements including Indian agencies may have supported the protests through there frontmen’s Some members of the community further claimed that the number of British Pakistanis and Azad Kashmiris attending the protest was lower than expected, while participants from other communities appeared more visible. The demonstration was overshadowed by the alleged assault on senior Pakistani journalist Murtaza Ali Shah while he was covering the protest. Reports of the incident have drawn concern from journalists and media organisations, with calls for those responsible to be identified and held accountable. Witnesses also alleged that some protesters behaved aggressively towards members of the media, raising concerns about press freedom and the safety of journalists covering public demonstrations. Media observers said any intimidation or violence against journalists undermines democratic values and damages the credibility of a protest. The protest took place amid continuing demonstrations by sections of the Kashmiri diaspora over developments in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. While organisers described the event as a show of solidarity with Kashmir, the allegations over funding, crowd mobilisation and the reported violence have shifted attention to the conduct and organisation of the demonstration. The organisers have not publicly responded to the allegations regarding the event’s funding, logistics or the reported assault on the journalist. Community representatives have called for full transparency over the financing of the protest and urged all parties to ensure that future demonstrations remain peaceful and respectful of media freedom.Organisers have rejected claims of Indian funding by saying there members contributed for the arrangements.

Hrithik Roshan recalls father’s financial crisis after Koyla setback

Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan has opened up about one of the most emotional periods in his family’s life, recalling the financial difficulties his father, filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, faced following the commercial disappointment of Shah Rukh Khan’s 1997 film Koyla. The 52-year-old actor recently spoke about his father’s struggles and revealed that there was a time when Rakesh Roshan lost a significant portion of the money he had earned throughout his career. Recalling the difficult period, Hrithik said he still remembers a particular morning when he saw his father with tears in his eyes for the first time. The actor explained that Rakesh Roshan had told him that he had lost all the money he had earned. For Hrithik, witnessing his father in such a vulnerable state was an experience he could never forget. He described the moment as extremely emotional because he had never previously seen his father so broken and distressed. Rakesh Roshan had produced Koyla under his production banner Filmkraft Productions. The action thriller featured Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit in the lead roles, alongside Amrish Puri, Deepa Sahi, Ashok Saraf, Johnny Lever and several other prominent actors. Released in 1997, Koyla revolved around Shankar, played by Shah Rukh Khan, a mute and loyal coal miner who works in a coal mine. CDA launches Rs5.07bn Six-Lane Road project from Faizabad to Koral Chowk

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has accelerated plans to construct a new six-lane carriageway along Service Road East, approving a project worth Rs5.072 billion aimed at easing chronic traffic congestion on the Islamabad Expressway and improving connectivity between Faizabad and Koral Chowk. The 9.25-kilometre road will run parallel to the Islamabad Expressway, extending from Faizabad to Koral Chowk near Gulberg Housing Society. Once completed, the new corridor is expected to provide motorists with an alternative route, reducing travel time on one of the capital’s busiest transport arteries while facilitating smoother traffic movement for commuters travelling to Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Officials said the project forms part of the CDA’s broader strategy to upgrade the capital’s road infrastructure in response to increasing traffic volumes and rapid urban expansion in surrounding residential and commercial areas. According to official sources, the new carriageway is expected to improve access to several housing societies and neighbourhoods located along the eastern side of the Islamabad Expressway. Authorities believe the project will not only ease traffic bottlenecks but also stimulate commercial development by increasing the value of properties and attracting new businesses along the corridor. To facilitate construction, the CDA has earmarked approximately Rs500 million for the relocation of critical utility infrastructure. This includes fibre-optic networks operated by the Islamabad Police Safe City Project, the Strategic Plans Division (SPD), Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), and the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO). Sources said extensive utility shifting will be required before the main construction work can proceed at full pace. The project involves relocating 11kV electricity distribution lines, shifting 242 electricity poles, and relocating 248 graves that fall within the road alignment. Earthwork activities have already begun at selected locations. The road project also incorporates environmental protection measures. Officials said engineers have planned the preservation of 22 underground water channels, natural streams, and stormwater drains located along the proposed route to minimise environmental disruption and maintain the area’s natural drainage system. A breakdown of utility relocation costs shows that around Rs406 million has been allocated for IESCO infrastructure, Rs87.3 million for shifting Safe City fibre-optic networks, and approximately Rs6 million for relocating SPD facilities. Work on these utility relocation components is expected to commence after the completion of technical and administrative formalities. A senior CDA official said the authority has revised the project’s completion timeline, reducing the original target of 12 months to between six and eight months. However, the official acknowledged that the timely relocation of utilities remains the biggest hurdle and will largely determine whether the revised deadline can be achieved.

Selena Gomez, Wondermind partners sued by investors

American singer and actress Selena Gomez, her mother Mandy Teefey and former business partner Daniella Pierson are facing a lawsuit from investors in Wondermind, a mental health startup co-founded by Gomez. The investors have accused the three of misleading them about the company’s financial condition, business activities and future plans. The lawsuit was filed in a Delaware court on Thursday. According to the complaint, two groups of investors collectively invested nearly $1.2 million in Wondermind. They allege that the company’s founders and executives made representations about its business that did not match reality. The investors have brought several claims, including securities fraud, common-law fraud and breach of contract. They allege that they were kept unaware of serious problems within the company while their money continued to fund its operations. Wondermind was launched in 2021 with a focus on mental fitness. The company promotes practical ways for people to prioritise their mental wellbeing in everyday life. Gomez is identified as a co-founder of the startup, while Teefey served as its chief executive. Pierson was also a co-founder but left the company in 2023 following reported disagreements with Teefey. The investors claim they were encouraged to put money into Wondermind after being told about major commercial opportunities. These allegedly included partnerships with companies such as JPMorgan, advertising arrangements, celebrity magazine features and plans for a major mobile application. According to the lawsuit, those opportunities either did not exist or failed to materialise. The investors also allege that the promised app was never developed. The complaint claims the investors only became aware of the company’s internal problems after a September report examined disputes within Wondermind and allegations of mismanagement. The investors subsequently contacted Teefey in November and requested that their money be returned. They say Teefey initially indicated that she would respond within 10 days but did not provide a substantive response. The complaint states that Teefey later replied to another notice in April, saying she believed the investment had already been returned. She reportedly referred further questions to Gomez’s legal team. The investors allege that Teefey later said Wondermind had established an escrow account to facilitate repayment. However, they claim repeated requests for information about the account went unanswered. The plaintiffs allege that no such escrow account existed and describe the events as part of an alleged years-long scheme to mislead investors. The lawsuit seeks repayment of the investors’ original funds, along with additional damages and legal costs.
