India passes bill prescribing three-year Jail term

India has passed a controversial bill that introduces penalties for insulting or disrupting the singing of Vande Mataram, the country’s national song. Under the proposed legislation, anyone found guilty of obstructing the performance of Vande Mataram or showing disrespect toward it could face up to three years in prison. The bill has triggered widespread political debate, with opposition parties and minority groups expressing concern that it undermines India’s secular principles and religious freedoms. The bill was presented by India’s Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai. Once it receives the approval of the President, it will officially become law. According to Rai, the legislation is not aimed at targeting any individual, religion, or political ideology. Instead, he argued that it is intended to safeguard the dignity of the nation and strengthen a shared sense of national identity and unity among Indian citizens. However, the bill has faced strong opposition from several political parties, including the Indian National Congress and other opposition groups. Critics argue that the legislation violates the secular character of the Indian Constitution and threatens the constitutional right to freedom of religion. Opposition leaders have warned that compelling citizens to participate in or show reverence toward Vande Mataram could create unnecessary religious and social tensions in a country known for its cultural and religious diversity. Opposition parties also pointed out that there was no need to enforce the entire version of Vande Mataram through legislation. They noted that during the framing of the Indian Constitution, the Constituent Assembly had recognized only the first two stanzas of the song for official purposes. In their view, extending legal protection to the entire composition goes beyond the historical constitutional understanding and could lead to disputes over interpretation and implementation. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President and Member of Parliament Asaduddin Owaisi strongly criticized the bill, describing it as a violation of the constitutional guarantee of religious freedom. He argued that Vande Mataram contains references to the worship of Hindu goddesses and deities, making it incompatible with the religious beliefs of many citizens, particularly those belonging to non-Hindu faiths. Owaisi claimed that forcing respect for the song through legal penalties amounts to imposing a particular religious belief on the entire population. He further alleged that the legislation reflects an attempt to transform India into a “Hindu Rashtra,” or Hindu nation. According to Owaisi, such measures weaken India’s constitutional commitment to secularism and equal treatment of all religious communities. He warned that laws based on religious symbolism could deepen divisions rather than promote national unity. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board also expressed serious concern over the bill’s approval. In its statement, the organization argued that using legislation to impose a specific religious concept or belief on all citizens contradicts the fundamental spirit of the Indian Constitution. The Board maintained that India’s democratic framework guarantees equal rights and religious freedom for people of all faiths and that no law should compel citizens to endorse religious practices or beliefs that conflict with their convictions. The debate surrounding the bill has highlighted the broader discussion over nationalism, constitutional values, and religious freedom in India. Supporters believe the legislation promotes national pride and respect for national symbols, while critics argue that it risks eroding the country’s secular foundations. As the bill now awaits presidential approval, it continues to generate significant political and public debate across the country.

  • Pakistan says no date fixed yet for new US-Iran talks

President Donald Trump lashed out on Monday after Iran denied it was holding talks with the United States. He declared in an angry social media post that the American military blockade would continue until there was a deal or what he called total surrender. Trump called Iran duplicitous for openly saying it was not negotiating. He wrote that whether Iran wants to admit it or not, the two sides are talking about a problem that Iran has caused for decades. His post came after Iran denied direct talks were happening, even though Trump had said talks would occur when he called off a threatened bombing campaign over the weekend. Iran’s foreign ministry said on Monday that its only talks were with Oman, focused on sharing control of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil trade. Trump insisted Iran had asked for talks, but was now giving what he called usual excuses about controlling Hormuz. He said the strait is already fully controlled by the US Navy, and that nothing would pass through unless Iran agreed to a deal or surrendered completely. Trump launched the war against Iran together with Israel in February. The original goals included destroying Iran’s nuclear industry and missile programs. Pakistani officials told Turkish news agency Anadolu that no date or location has yet been finalised for the resumption of direct US-Iran talks. A senior Pakistani official said no meeting is scheduled in Islamabad within the next day. Pakistani and Qatari mediators remain in contact with both Washington and Tehran to arrange the next round of talks. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is expected to visit Tehran soon to discuss reviving negotiations under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which was signed on June 17. Sources said the first phase of talks would focus on restoring the ceasefire and returning to the situation before hostilities resumed on July 9, rather than addressing the nuclear issue immediately. Under one proposal, Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz while the US would lift its blockade of Iranian ports. According to a CNN report, a senior US Central Command officer sent an email to military analysts asking for creative and unconventional ideas to pressure and punish Iran. This unusual request suggests Washington may have limited options left to force Iran into an agreement. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei repeated that Iran is not holding any current talks with the US. He said reaching an agreement with Oman would not be enough to reopen the strait as long as what he called American aggression continues. He also said the Strait of Hormuz will never return to its pre-war state. Tensions on the ground continued to rise. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said it shot down a US drone over the Strait of Hormuz. Several oil tankers rerouted away from the Bab al-Mandab Strait to avoid attacks by Yemeni forces, adding millions of dollars to shipping costs. An explosion was also reported near a tanker off the coast of Oman. Israel launched two days of naval and ground military drills as regional tensions grew. Separately, Israel continued attacks on southern Lebanon despite an existing ceasefire, targeting several towns with drones and artillery. Iran also announced it had executed two people accused of spying for Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency. Meanwhile, Iran’s foreign minister held phone calls with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan’s military chief to discuss ongoing diplomatic efforts in the region.

A portrait of the artist as a young man

James Joyce published A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in 1916. He did far more than tell the story of a boy growing up in Dublin. He revolutionized the modern novel. As Joyce’s first published novel, Portrait serves as a crucial bridge between classical nineteenth-century storytelling and the radical experimentation of twentieth-century modernism. Over a century after its release, this intimate novel remains a timeless exploration of identity, intellectual rebellion and terrifying price of personal freedom. Sensory Stream of Consciousness The novel follows Stephen Dedalus who’s a thinly veiled avatar for Joyce himself from early childhood through his late adolescence and college years. The book opens not with traditional exposition, but with a sensory stream of consciousness. The baby talk, the texture of a bedsheet, the smell of oilcloth, and songs sung by his family. As Stephen grows, so too does the language of the book. Joyce evolves his prose style alongside his protagonist. He transforms the narrative voice from simple baby phrases into highly philosophical and poetic language as Stephen matures into a young scholar. Extreme Religious Devotion At its core, Portrait is a profound meditation on the heavy burdens of tradition. Growing up in a strictly Catholic, politically fractured Ireland at the turn of the twentieth century, Stephen finds himself trapped between competing pressures. He witnesses fierce family debates over Irish nationalism. He also suffers harsh physical punishments at strict Jesuit boarding schools. Ultimately, he struggles with agonizing guilt over his emerging teenage desires. A central turning point of the novel occurs during a harrowing religious retreat, where a priest delivers a vividly detailed sermon on the eternal torment of Hell. Paralyzed by fear, Stephen briefly attempts a life of extreme religious devotion, only to realize that spiritual conformity destroys his true self. Creative Freedom Over Compliance Stephen’s ultimate breakthrough doesn’t come from religiously pious self . It’s from art. In one of the most famous passages in modern literature, Stephen walks along the shore and catches sight of a young woman wading in the water. Stephen doesn’t see her through a lens of sinful desire or religious symbolism. Rather, he sees her simply as an embodiment of pure, mortal beauty. This aesthetic epiphany awakens his true calling. Now, he must break free from the traditional network of family, church, and nation that seek to hold him back. To become an artist, Stephen realizes he must embrace exile. Thus, he must chose solitude and creative freedom over compliance. Joyce’s genius lies in his ability to make Stephen’s internal struggles feel deeply universal. Anyone who has ever questioned the beliefs they were raised with, felt out of place in their own community. They strived to forge an independent identity will find a powerful reflection in Stephen’s journey. His famous declaration near the end of the book to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race is a bold rallying cry for personal independence. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is not just the story of one young man’s transformation in turn-of-the-century Ireland, but a brilliant testament to the courage required to think for oneself and forge a truly unique voice in the world.

Zendaya praises Tom Holland’s real-life dedication to Spider-Man

Zendaya has opened up about what she admires most in Tom Holland’s take on Spider-Man, pointing to how he handles the role once the cameras stop rolling. Speaking alongside Holland in a joint sit-down with Rotten Tomatoes, the actress, who plays his on-screen love interest MJ, said her favourite part of his portrayal has nothing to do with action scenes or costumes. Instead, she pointed to how seriously he takes the character in everyday life, especially around fans who see him as more than just an actor. She explained that countless people, particularly kids, form a deep bond with Peter Parker, and Holland has managed to carry that responsibility with genuine grace. According to Zendaya, he never loses sight of what the role means to young admirers who look up to him. She went further, telling Holland directly that stepping into the suit comes with real weight because, for those children, he does not just play Spider-Man, he becomes him in their eyes. Zendaya said watching how he embraces that role beyond the screen is something she genuinely admires about her husband. The comments come shortly after Holland reflected on the pressure of stepping back into Peter Parker’s shoes for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a film that went on to earn a massive $927 million at the global box office. Talking to Kino TV, Holland admitted that the success of his earlier Spider-Man outings and his run in the Avengers franchise made him fully grasp how much the character meant to audiences worldwide. He revealed that he felt more nervous returning to set this time around than ever before. Despite those nerves, Holland said the experience turned out to be even more fulfilling, largely because of the pressure he put on himself to get it right. He credited that anxiety with pushing him to deliver a performance that matched the scale of what fans expected from him. Between Zendaya’s praise and Holland’s own reflections, it is clear the actor’s connection to Spider-Man runs far deeper than just another movie role for him.

  • Police get 3 days to quiz Mushtaq over F-10 unrest

An anti-terrorism court in Islamabad has handed over former senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan to police custody for three days. The order came in a case linked to a protest in the capital. Police produced the former senator along with another suspect named Daniyal before Duty Judge Rukhsanda Shaheen at the anti-terrorism court. During the hearing, the prosecution asked the court for a 30-day physical remand. They said police needed more time to recover a vehicle and weapons allegedly connected to the case. After listening to the arguments, the court approved a three-day physical remand for Mushtaq Ahmad and the other suspects. The court directed police to bring them back once the remand period ends. The case was registered at Islamabad’s Shalimar Police Station on July 31. The complaint was filed by Sub-inspector Ghulam Murtaza. According to the First Information Report, Mushtaq Ahmad led a crowd of around 400 to 500 people who gathered in the capital’s F-10 sector. The report accused him of delivering provocative speeches through loudspeakers. It said his speeches forced nearby shops to close down. It also said the crowd chanted slogans against current government institutions. The FIR further stated that Mushtaq then led the protesters toward Sambal Road. Police say the group intended to march toward Main Jinnah Avenue and block the road there. The district administration reportedly used loudspeakers to tell Mushtaq to end the gathering, since it was being held without a no-objection certificate. Despite this warning, the former senator and his supporters blocked a main road near Shalimar Plaza at around 7:10pm, according to the FIR. The report also accused the protesters of vandalising a media DSNG vehicle along with several private cars passing through the area at the time. It claimed that protesters pelted stones and attacked police officials on duty. The FIR further alleged that some protesters snatched anti-riot helmets from police personnel and threatened them. Police say the case has been registered under relevant sections of the law dealing with terrorism and unlawful assembly. Investigators are now working to gather further evidence, including recovering the vehicle and weapons mentioned in the case. The former senator will remain in police custody during the three-day remand period. He is expected to be produced before the court again once this period concludes, where police may seek further custody or the case may proceed to the next legal stage. The incident has drawn attention to ongoing tensions between political groups and law enforcement in the capital, with authorities stressing that unauthorised gatherings and road blockages will not be tolerated without proper permissions from the district administration.

Andrews called the night magical and admitted it stirred something in her, joking that witnessing the wedding almost made her want a similar commitment ceremony of her own. Thompson chose not to reveal too many specifics about the event but shared one reflection that stuck with her. She said watching the couple exchange vows reminded her that once you find the right person, everything else falls into place. She added that the weekend reinforced a simple truth for her, that no amount of success or wealth means much without someone to share it with. Andrews agreed with her co-host and noted that fans have been eager for details ever since the ceremony took place. She echoed Thompson’s sentiment, calling the night magical in her own words, and admitted she still feels protective of the pop star. She also revealed that she almost pushed back publicly against people spreading false claims about the wedding online, saying she was frustrated watching strangers invent stories about things that simply never happened. Looking back on the celebration, Andrews said one of her favourite parts was getting to meet people close to the couple whom she had only heard about before. She described the atmosphere as warm and effortlessly enjoyable, adding that everyone she crossed paths with was friendly and easy to be around. Swift and Kelce’s wedding capped off a whirlwind engagement that lasted less than a year. The couple exchanged vows on July 3 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, turning the iconic arena into the setting for one of the most talked-about celebrity weddings of the year. With both hosts offering a rare glimpse into the day from the perspective of guests rather than tabloids, fans now have a warmer, more personal picture of how the celebration actually unfolded, far removed from the rumours that followed it online.

PMDC announces special measures for AJK students a…

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has announced a series of special measures to ensure that students from Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), who have been affected by prolonged internet disruptions, are able to participate in the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) without facing unnecessary obstacles. As part of these initiatives, the PMDC has established a dedicated examination center in Islamabad and has also reached a preliminary agreement to set up a regional PMDC office in Azad Kashmir. The decisions were made during a meeting between AJK Secretary of Health Brigadier Aamir Raza and Joint Admission Committee Chairman Professor Dr. Faisal Bashir with PMDC President Professor Dr. Rizwan Taj, Registrar Brigadier (Retd.) Rehan Naqvi, and Director of Admission Affairs Dr. Imdad Ali Khushk. The meeting focused on the registration challenges faced by AJK students due to the prolonged internet shutdown and explored practical solutions to ensure that no eligible candidate is deprived of the opportunity to take the MDCAT. During the meeting, the Secretary of Health of the AJK government informed PMDC officials that the ongoing internet suspension in the region had created serious difficulties for students attempting to complete their online registration for the entrance examination. He requested the council to extend every possible facility to affected students so that deserving candidates would not miss the examination because of circumstances beyond their control. Speaking on the occasion, PMDC President Professor Dr. Rizwan Taj stated that the council had already introduced several special measures to facilitate students from Azad Kashmir. He emphasized that the Government of Pakistan remains committed to ensuring equal opportunities for every eligible student seeking admission to medical and dental colleges, regardless of the challenges they face. Dr. Rizwan Taj explained that, considering the extraordinary circumstances in the region, the deadline for MDCAT registration with the regular fee had been extended twice. Initially, the deadline was extended until July 13, and later it was further extended until July 23, 2026, to provide additional time for students affected by the communication disruptions to complete their registration process. The PMDC President further said that students from Azad Kashmir had been given multiple options for submitting their registration applications. In addition to the online process, applications could be sent through WhatsApp, email, postal mail, or submitted in person. He also assured students experiencing registration difficulties that they could contact the PMDC directly, where officials would provide all possible assistance to help them complete the process successfully. To further support students, the PMDC has established a special MDCAT examination center in Islamabad specifically for candidates from Azad Kashmir. A public notice has already been issued regarding the facility, and a dedicated focal person has been appointed to guide students throughout the registration and examination process. The council hopes these measures will reduce confusion and ensure smooth coordination for affected candidates. During the meeting, PMDC President Professor Dr. Rizwan Taj and Registrar Brigadier (Retd.) Rehan Naqvi assured the Government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir of their full cooperation in addressing students’ concerns. Both sides also reached a preliminary agreement to establish a PMDC regional office in Azad Kashmir to improve access to council services for students and healthcare professionals in the region. The proposal will now be presented to the PMDC Governing Body for formal approval. At the conclusion of the meeting, the AJK Secretary of Health and the Chairman of the Joint Admission Committee appreciated the PMDC’s timely response and the special facilities provided for students affected by the internet shutdown. They expressed confidence that these initiatives would ensure that no eligible student from Azad Jammu and Kashmir would be deprived of the opportunity to appear in the MDCAT because of technical or communication-related difficulties.

Narine’s quiet advice helped Tariq silence the noise on his action

Pakistan spinner Usman Tariq has shared how a call from West Indies great Sunil Narine helped him push through one of the toughest stretches of his career, as questions swirled around the legality of his bowling action. Tariq broke into international cricket last year, earning his debut against South Africa after a string of impressive performances for Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League. Since then, his unconventional action has become a talking point almost every time he takes the ball. The 28-year-old has repeatedly had to defend himself, after both England batter Tom Banton and Australian all-rounder Cameron Green appeared to signal suspicion over a possible throw during separate matches. ICC regulations allow bowlers to straighten their arm by up to 15 degrees mid-delivery, and Tariq maintains he stays well within that limit. He puts the unusual look of his action down to the natural structure of his elbow rather than anything illegal. He made a similar point earlier this year while playing in the ILT20, explaining that his elbow simply does not allow him to straighten his arm fully, regardless of how his action might appear from the outside. The debate resurfaced ahead of Pakistan’s blockbuster clash with India at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, when parts of the Indian media suggested he was being held back from earlier games purely to keep him fresh for that one fixture. The theory did not hold up for long, since Tariq had already featured in Pakistan’s second T20I against Australia before the tournament, and he went on to play his part throughout the World Cup. Speaking with former Pakistan batter Fawad Alam, Tariq revealed that Narine had called him directly during the most intense period of criticism. According to Tariq, the two spoke for close to 30 minutes, with Narine telling him to tune out the noise, stay consistent with his cricket, and remember that critics were only targeting him because they struggled to counter his bowling. Tariq’s action has been reported twice across his career, and both times he was cleared after review. The most recent clearance followed testing at an ICC-accredited biomechanics laboratory, where he bowled 24 deliveries for analysis before being given the green light to continue.

Henderson completes Chelsea switch after Brentford exit

Chelsea have brought in England midfielder Jordan Henderson on a free transfer, ending his short stint at Brentford and giving the veteran a fresh chapter at Stamford Bridge. The former Liverpool skipper, who was part of England’s squad at this year’s World Cup in North America, has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the Blues. Henderson said joining a club of Chelsea’s stature, working under a manager he rates highly, and playing alongside such a talented squad made the move impossible to turn down. He also pointed to the clear ambition shown by the club’s ownership as something that impressed him deeply. Looking ahead, he said his focus would simply be on working hard every day, on and off the pitch, to help his new teammates and push the team forward. Reports had already surfaced last week confirming that Henderson’s Brentford deal had been cancelled once Chelsea’s interest in the midfielder became apparent, setting the stage for a move between the two west London-adjacent rivals. The 36-year-old rose to prominence during his years at Liverpool, where he won both the Premier League and the Champions League. He departed Anfield in 2023 to join Saudi side Al-Ettifaq, before switching to Dutch giants Ajax only half a year later. His return to English football came last year through a two-year contract with Brentford. A veteran of 91 caps for England, Henderson featured in this year’s World Cup squad but played only sparingly, and later suffered a broken arm during the tournament. His move to Chelsea comes just two days after the club completed the signing of experienced striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton. It has been an active summer in the transfer market for the Blues, who already broke the British transfer record by paying £117 million ($157 million) for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, while also adding French defender Maxence Lacroix and Atalanta man Marco Palestra to their ranks. Chelsea’s previous campaign ended in disappointment, as they finished 10th in the Premier League table, narrowly behind Brentford, and missed out on European qualification altogether. Manager Xabi Alonso will now be eager to turn things around when his side begins the new season with an away trip to face Fulham at Craven Cottage on August 24.

Karachi traffic police issue comprehensive traffic…

The Karachi Traffic Police have announced a comprehensive traffic management plan for the city’s central Chehlum procession, informing residents that M.A. Jinnah Road will remain closed to traffic throughout the event. The special arrangements have been introduced to ensure the smooth movement of the religious procession while minimizing inconvenience for commuters. Citizens have been advised to plan their travel accordingly and use the designated alternative routes to avoid delays. According to the traffic police, all traffic traveling from Saddar toward Tower will be diverted through Preedy Street and I.I. Chundrigar Road. In addition, several key intersections and commercial areas, including Lighthouse, Empress Market, Regal Chowk, and Tibet Centre, will have temporary traffic diversions in place. These measures are intended to keep vehicles away from the procession route and maintain public safety during the event. Motorists approaching from Shahrah-e-Quaideen will be redirected toward Kashmir Road and Peoples Chowrangi. Vehicles arriving from Korangi, Landhi, and the National Highway will be diverted through Rashid Minhas Road before proceeding to the Super Highway. Traffic officials have urged drivers from these areas to follow diversion signs and cooperate with law enforcement personnel deployed along the routes. Commuters traveling from Nazimabad will be able to reach their destinations through Lasbela, Garden, and Nishtar Road. Similarly, traffic coming from Liaquatabad will be diverted at Lasbela Chowk toward Nazimabad No. 10. These alternate routes have been identified to reduce congestion and facilitate the movement of vehicles while the main procession route remains inaccessible. The traffic plan also outlines arrangements for vehicles coming from Hassan Square. Such traffic will be directed through Shahrah-e-Quaideen, Society Light Signal, and Teen Hatti before reaching Lasbela Chowk. Meanwhile, motorists traveling from Shahrah-e-Faisal will be guided through Society Light Signal and Sher Shah Suri Road to continue their journeys. Drivers using Jamshed Road and intending to travel toward Gurumandir have been advised to use Bahadur Yar Jang Road or Soldier Bazaar Road as alternative routes. The Karachi Traffic Police have imposed strict restrictions on heavy vehicles for the duration of the procession. Heavy traffic will not be allowed to enter the city from 10:00 a.m. until the conclusion of the Chehlum procession. The restriction is aimed at preventing congestion and ensuring the safety of participants and the general public. Transport operators have been instructed to adjust their schedules accordingly and avoid entering restricted areas during the specified hours. Authorities have also announced a complete ban on parking along the procession route. Any vehicle found parked in prohibited areas will be immediately towed away without prior notice. Traffic police have warned motorists to comply with parking regulations and follow the instructions of officers on duty to avoid penalties and unnecessary inconvenience. The central Chehlum procession is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 4, from Nishtar Park. A large number of mourners are expected to participate in the religious gathering, prompting extensive security and traffic arrangements across the city. Police and traffic officials will remain deployed throughout the procession to manage vehicle movement, assist commuters, and maintain public order. Residents are encouraged to stay updated through official traffic advisories before leaving their homes and to use alternative routes wherever possible. The Karachi Traffic Police have appealed to the public for patience and cooperation, emphasizing that the temporary restrictions are necessary to ensure the safe and peaceful conduct of the central Chehlum procession while minimizing disruption to daily life.
