Pakistan to lead new Turkey-Saudi defence pact

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is set to take the first three-year leadership of a new secretariat established under the defence agreement signed by Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia in Makkah on Aug 7, giving Islamabad a prominent role in coordinating the emerging regional security framework.

According to Turkish and international media reports, the secretariat will serve as the central mechanism for implementing decisions taken by the three countries and coordinating their growing defence cooperation. After Pakistan’s initial three-year term, leadership is expected to pass to Saudi Arabia and then Türkiye.

The agreement is built around a collective-security principle under which an armed attack against one member would be regarded as an attack against all three. However, unlike NATO’s automatic response mechanism, the pact leaves the nature of any response to be determined according to the circumstances and the request of the affected country.

A high-level council comprising foreign and defence ministers as well as military chiefs is also expected to oversee the arrangement. The council is expected to meet twice a year, while cooperation could range from intelligence sharing and logistics to direct military assistance when required.

The partnership also places a strong emphasis on defence technology. The three countries plan to expand cooperation in unmanned systems, electronic warfare and artificial intelligence, alongside joint military exercises designed to improve coordination among their armed forces. Joint defence production, research and technology transfer are also part of the broader framework.

For Pakistan, the first leadership term could prove strategically significant. Islamabad already maintains longstanding defence ties with both Ankara and Riyadh, and its role at the secretariat could give it greater influence in regional security diplomacy.

Türkiye has stressed that the agreement is defensive and is not directed against any particular country. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the pact is intended to strengthen regional security rather than replace existing alliances.

With the Middle East facing continued instability, the new arrangement could become an important test of how effectively three regional powers can turn political solidarity into practical defence cooperation.

Leaked FIFA letter congratulates Argentina on World Cup runner-up finish

A letter written by FIFA President Gianni Infantino to Argentine Football Association President Claudio Tapia has reportedly surfaced amid an ongoing FIFA investigation into the post-match confrontation following the 2026 World Cup final. In the letter, Infantino referred to Argentina’s defeat against Spain in the final played on July 19, 2026. He congratulated Argentina on securing the silver medal and praised the team’s overall performance throughout the tournament. Infantino described Argentina’s World Cup campaign as an impressive achievement. He also praised the players and head coach Lionel Scaloni for their hard work, professionalism and commitment to football. The letter has emerged at a sensitive time for Argentine football. FIFA is currently investigating a confrontation between players following the final. Tensions reportedly rose after Argentina lost to Spain in extra time. The atmosphere remained tense during the trophy presentation, with most Argentine players reportedly turning their backs while the Spanish team received the trophy. A physical altercation between players also reportedly took place after the match. FIFA is examining the incident as part of its formal disciplinary process. The leaked correspondence, however, focuses on Argentina’s sporting achievement rather than the post-match controversy. Infantino’s message praised the team for reaching the final and securing the runners-up position. Sending formal congratulatory letters to medal-winning teams is a customary FIFA practice following the conclusion of major international tournaments. Argentina’s silver-medal finish marked the culmination of a strong World Cup campaign, despite the team falling short against Spain in the final.

Shan Masood resumes batting ahead of England Tests

BECKENHAM: Pakistan batter Shan Masood has taken another important step towards returning to Test cricket, resuming batting practice with the national squad ahead of the three-match series against England. Masood, 36, suffered a fractured index finger during the opening Test against the West Indies in Tarouba, despite scoring a century in the first innings. The injury forced him to miss the second Test, but the former Pakistan captain remained with the squad to continue his rehabilitation under the supervision of the team’s medical staff. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has now confirmed that Masood participated in a training session at Kent County Cricket Club in Beckenham, where Pakistan players worked through batting and bowling drills. “Under the supervision of the medical team, he carried out batting practice,” the PCB said in an update. Masood’s progress will be closely monitored as Pakistan prepare for a demanding series against England. His availability for the first Test will depend on his recovery and clinical assessment. The opening Test is scheduled to begin at Headingley on August 19, leaving Masood only a limited window to prove he is fit enough for the challenge. Before the series begins, Pakistan will play a four-day warm-up match against PCC Select XI starting Wednesday. The fixture will provide the squad with valuable preparation in English conditions. The second Test will be played at Lord’s from August 27, followed by the final match at Edgbaston from September 9. For Pakistan, Masood’s return could provide a significant boost to the batting line-up. His century in the Caribbean showed his ability to make an impact, and his recovery now gives the team hope that the experienced left-hander could be back when the England challenge begins. Pakistan squad Babar Azam (c), Aamir Jamal, Ali Usman, Abdullah Shafique, Azan Awais, Imam-ul-Haq, Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Mohammad Awais Zafar, Muhammad Ghazi Ghori (wk), Sajid Khan, Salman Ali Agha, Saud Shakeel* (subject to fitness), Shan Masood and Ubaid Shah.

Government challenges SC order to shift Imran Khan…

Islamabad: The federal government has filed a review petition in the Supreme Court challenging its interim order directing the transfer of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital. In its petition, the government described the Supreme Court’s interim order as an overreach of legal authority. It argued that the Pakistan Prison Rules, 1978, clearly prescribe the procedure for providing medical treatment to prisoners. According to the government, a prisoner can be shifted to a government civil hospital or a district headquarters hospital when necessary. However, it said there is no provision in the law for transferring a prisoner to a private hospital. The government also maintained that prison laws and the Prisons Act do not give a prisoner the right to receive treatment from a private doctor of his choice. The petition stated that Imran Khan’s case had been fixed for hearing for the first time and that he had not even been issued a notice. Despite this, the court issued an interim order regarding his medical treatment and transfer. The government argued that the court appeared to have reached the conclusion that Imran Khan’s health was deteriorating on the basis of a medical report. However, according to the petition, the report did not clearly indicate any such deterioration. It further stated that a medical board had examined Imran Khan several times. The government maintained that expert medical opinions should have been sought before making a decision on such a medical matter. The petition also challenged the use of Section 561-A of the Code of Criminal Procedure, arguing that the provision cannot be used to interfere in matters falling within the jurisdiction of prison authorities. The government further objected to the relief granted to Imran Khan at the interim stage. It said four requests were effectively granted through the interim order, including his transfer to Shifa International Hospital, access to personal doctors, meetings with family members, and provision of medical reports to his lawyers. According to the government, such relief at the interim stage amounted to granting final relief without completing the regular legal proceedings. The petition also warned that allowing a special facility for Imran Khan at a private hospital could set a precedent for other prisoners. It argued that other inmates could make similar demands under prison laws, potentially creating a large number of such requests. The government maintained that providing such special treatment would also conflict with the principle of equal treatment of prisoners.
