PML-N backs Gilani for AJK Premiership

ISLAMABAD: Barrister Syed Iftikhar Ali Gilani is set to be elected as the 17th Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) today, August 28, after the AJK Legislative Assembly issued a revised schedule for the election.

Gilani’s nomination by PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif has placed the party’s central leadership at the centre of the government-formation process in AJK, where the PML-N and its allies hold a comfortable majority in the 53-member Legislative Assembly.

Election Schedule

According to the revised schedule issued by the AJK Legislative Assembly, nomination papers will be filed from 9:30am to 10:30am, followed by scrutiny from 10:30am to 10:45am.

The candidate list will be displayed at 11:00am, while candidates will be allowed to withdraw their papers until 11:30am. The final list will be issued at noon.

The election for the prime minister is scheduled for 2:00pm, after Friday prayers, followed by the oath-taking ceremony at 4:00pm at the Presidency.

PML-N Holds Numbers

The PML-N and its coalition partners currently command 32 seats in the 53-member assembly, including support from JUI and Awami Dast-o-Bazu.

The PPP has 14 members and has nominated Mukhtar Ahmed Abbasi and Bazal Naqvi for the prime ministerial contest.

With the coalition holding a clear majority, Gilani is widely expected to secure the required votes and become the next AJK premier.

Nomination Sparks Internal Reservations

Despite the coalition’s numerical strength, Gilani’s nomination has reportedly exposed differences within the PML-N’s AJK chapter.

Sources familiar with the matter told Minute Mirror that PML-N AJK President Shah Ghulam Qadir and former AJK prime minister Raja Farooq Haider Khan expressed reservations during a meeting at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad on Wednesday in the presence of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Qadir was also reportedly opposed to the nomination and indicated that he would neither vote for Gilani nor attend Friday’s assembly session.

The extent of internal dissent became evident when only 26 of the 32 lawmakers supporting the coalition attended a dinner hosted by AJK Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Tariq Farooq on Thursday night.

PML-N leader and Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb confirmed Gilani’s nomination on X, saying the decision was taken following consultations within the party leadership.

Gilani’s Political Career

Barrister Syed Iftikhar Ali Gilani became a member of the AJK Legislative Assembly in August 2026 on a technocrat seat.

He previously served as an assembly member from October 2011 to August 2021, giving him considerable experience in AJK politics.

Speaker, Deputy Speaker Elected

The latest developments follow the election of Chaudhry Tariq Farooq as Speaker of the AJK Legislative Assembly on August 24. He secured 32 votes.

Ahmed Raza Qadri was elected Deputy Speaker with the same number of votes.

A small cabinet is also expected to take oath after the new prime minister assumes office.

Nawaz Sharif’s Role

The latest nomination marks another significant turn in the PML-N’s efforts to form the government in AJK.

Following the party’s victory in the AJK elections, held in three phases between July 27 and August 10, Nawaz Sharif initially nominated Shah Ghulam Qadir for the top office.

The subsequent nomination of Barrister Iftikhar Gilani has therefore introduced an unexpected twist to the government-formation process, while raising questions about whether the PML-N leadership can resolve internal differences before the new government takes shape.

    KOT ADDU: A devastating tragedy unfolded in Kot Addu after a loader rickshaw carrying members of a wedding procession fell into the Muzaffargarh Canal, leaving at least 12 people dead and three others missing. The incident has plunged several families into mourning. Children and women are among those who lost their lives in the accident. Rescue 1122 teams from Kot Addu and Muzaffargarh reached the site soon after receiving information about the incident. A search and rescue operation was launched in the canal. Rescuers used boats, scuba-diving equipment and other available resources to search for the victims. Several bodies were recovered during the operation, bringing the death toll to 12. Three people remain missing. Rescue officials said divers are continuing to search different sections of the canal. Rescue boats are also being used to cover wider areas. According to a list provided by Rescue 1122, those who died included 14-year-old Dalaur, seven-year-old Muneeb, 58-year-old Sakina Bibi, 15-year-old Sameera Bibi, nine-year-old Raju, seven-year-old Muhammad Sibtain, 11-year-old Zareef, 35-year-old Iqbal Bibi, 13-year-old Kaleemullah, 12-year-old Muhammad Jalal, five-year-old Muhammad Ali and Muhammad Saeem. The large number of children among the victims has added to the grief surrounding the tragedy. Families who had set out to attend a wedding were suddenly confronted with an unimaginable loss. Homes that were preparing for celebrations are now filled with mourning. The families of the three missing people are facing severe distress. Relatives have gathered near the site and are waiting for information about their loved ones. Minute Mirror observed that Bashir Mashori, an elderly uncle and relative of the affected family, was deeply grieved over the situation. As the senior family member, Mashori expressed profound sorrow and called for assistance for the victim’s family during this difficult time. Residents have expressed concern over the scale of the tragedy and called for a coordinated rescue effort involving all relevant departments. Local residents and affected families have urged the Punjab government to take immediate notice of the incident and ensure that every available resource is used to locate the missing people. They have called for additional divers, modern search equipment and more rescue resources to be sent to the site. Residents have also demanded the involvement of the police, district administration, irrigation authorities, Provincial Disaster Management Authority and other relevant departments in the search operation. They said a tragedy involving the loss of 12 lives requires a coordinated response beyond routine district-level efforts. The affected families have appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and senior provincial officials to ensure that the search for the three missing people continues without interruption. They have also called for an investigation into the circumstances that led to the rickshaw falling into the canal. The families and residents said determining the cause of the accident is essential to prevent similar incidents in the future. Instead of helping the victims, some people were seen making videos and TikTok content at the scene. Such behaviour has drawn criticism and was described as deeply shameful and insensitive toward those affected. Rescue 1122 teams continue to search different sections of the Muzaffargarh Canal using divers, boats and other available equipment.

    LAHORE: Following the successful computerized ballot held on June 23, 2026, the CM Punjab Rahmat Card initiative has entered its next major milestone with JazzCash commencing digital disbursements to selected widows and orphans across Punjab. The launch of digital payments marks the successful transition from beneficiary selection to financial assistance delivery, completing another key phase of one of Punjab’s most technologically advanced social welfare initiatives. The CM Punjab Rahmat Card is a collaborative initiative of the Government of Punjab, Zakat & Ushr Department, Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), NADRA, Punjab Social Protection Authority (PSPA), Urban Unit, JazzCash, and other stakeholders to digitize the complete lifecycle of welfare assistance from citizen application and eligibility verification to transparent beneficiary selection and digital financial disbursement. During the computerized ballot ceremony, officials acknowledged the successful completion of the project’s technology implementation. Special Assistant to the Chief Minister (SACM) Rashid Iqbal Nasrullah appreciated the PITB team for its continuous technical support throughout the implementation of the initiative within stringent timelines. He also specially acknowledged the prompt guidance and support extended by PITB Chairman Faisal Yousaf at various stages of the project whenever required. Secretary, Zakat & Ushr Department, Irfan Ahmad Sandhu also commended the dedicated efforts of PITB in designing, developing, and operationalizing the comprehensive digital ecosystem supporting the Programme. He appreciated PITB’s commitment to ensuring the timely completion of all assigned deliverables despite challenging timelines. Participants observed that the CM Punjab Rahmat Card is the first initiative of its kind undertaken by the Zakat & Ushr Department in terms of both scale and technological sophistication. By replacing conventional manual processes with integrated digital workflows, the Programme has introduced unprecedented levels of transparency, efficiency, accountability, and speed in the delivery of welfare assistance. As the technology implementation partner, PITB designed, developed, and operationalized the complete digital platform supporting the initiative. The digital ecosystem includes an online citizen application portal, an Android mobile application, a dedicated helpline for application support, inquiries, and complaints, a Beneficiary Management System, a multi-agency digital verification engine integrated with NADRA and Punjab Socio-Economic Registry (PSER) databases, automated scrutiny and eligibility determination workflows, a computerized district-wise balloting mechanism, and real-time monitoring and decision-support administrative dashboards. The end-to-end digital workflow enabled citizens to submit applications online, which were then verified through multiple government databases, assessed against approved eligibility criteria, allocated according to district quotas, and finally selected through a transparent computerized ballot before being transferred for digital disbursement through JazzCash. The CM Punjab Rahmat Card initiative stands as a successful example of how digital public infrastructure can enable multiple government institutions to operate through a unified technology platform, facilitating data-driven decision-making, automated eligibility verification, transparent Programme execution, and secure digital payments. The project reinforces the Government of Punjab’s commitment to delivering technology-enabled, scalable, and accountable citizen services that improve the lives of vulnerable segments of society.

    Islamabad district courts begin summer break

    The summer vacation in Islamabad’s district and sessions courts began on Saturday and will continue until August 31, according to the official schedule issued by the judicial authorities. The district judiciary announced that regular court proceedings will remain suspended during the vacation period. However, essential judicial work will continue through designated duty judges to ensure that urgent legal matters are addressed without delay. The Sessions Judges of both the East and West divisions issued separate duty rosters for the summer break. Under the schedule, one additional sessions judge and one judicial magistrate will remain on duty in each division throughout the vacation period. The duty judges will hear urgent cases requiring immediate judicial intervention. These include matters related to physical remand, judicial remand, bail applications and other emergency cases that cannot be postponed until the courts reopen after the holidays. The arrangement has been made to ensure that litigants continue to have access to the courts for urgent legal relief despite the suspension of regular proceedings. Judicial officials said the vacation roster has been prepared to maintain the smooth functioning of the district judiciary while allowing judges and court staff to observe the annual summer recess. The district and sessions courts are expected to resume their normal schedule after the summer vacation concludes on August 31. Until then, only cases of an urgent nature will be taken up by the designated duty judges in both the East and West judicial divisions of Islamabad.

As part of this initiative, a high-level delegation comprising the Vice Chancellor of the Punjab Tianjin University of Technology (PTUT), Prof. Dr. Adeel Akram, and Chief Executive Officer of GalaxAI Solutions, Sheraz Waheed, visited the UO on Thursday. GalaxAI Solutions is an Islamabad-based technology company working on Sovereign AI infrastructure for Pakistan’s higher education sector. A meeting of the university’s academic heads and IT team was held under the chairmanship of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Sajjad Mubin. During the session, the PTUT delegation delivered a comprehensive presentation on AI agents, highlighting their potential applications in admissions management, campus administration, academic support, and day-to-day institutional operations. Addressing the participants, Prof. Mubin appreciated the PTUT team for visiting the UO to share their expertise and practical insights into emerging AI technologies. He described PTUT as a rapidly progressing institution and reiterated his vision of transforming the UO into a smart university through the integration of cutting-edge artificial intelligence solutions. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Akram emphasized that AI has the potential to significantly enhance efficiency across teaching, research, governance, and administrative functions. He noted that intelligent AI agents can help universities streamline routine processes, improve decision-making, and deliver better services to students and faculty. The meeting concluded with an understanding that PTUT will submit a formal proposal for the transfer and implementation of the AI technology at the University of Okara. The proposal will be reviewed by the University’s relevant authorities and statutory bodies, and any future implementation will be subject to the completion of all required approvals.
